Printing List of Artists then Albums

Some time ago, I was able to obtain a nice list from iTunes of artists, followed by their albums.   I am using iTunes 11 under OS 10.6.8, and I suspect this was an earlier version of iTunes.  The format was:
Artist Name
     Album 1
     Album 2
     Album 3
Next Artist Name
     Album 1
     Album 2
No songs.  No time length.  Nothing else.
This gave me a nice compact listing.
When I go to File/Print and select "Album List", then "List of Albums", I get way more information than I need, plus each artist is repeated over and over again, with lots of room between each line.   The result is far too large an output.
I suspect I exported something before, perhaps to Word or Excel.  But the Export option appears to have been removed from iTunes 11.
Anyone have any ideas how to get what I am looking for?

As I see it you have a few possible options…
See if dougscripts can help http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makeatextlist (there probably are other scripts on there that may help - search for 'export' on the site - some others are mentioned at Parsing iTunes XML).
Parse the .xml into the fields you desire (probably via a Python script or similar). I suspect there will be something around if you are willing to search & try running them. This should give the best output but may take some work.
Parse the output of a directory listing (assuming iTunes manages the location of the media), the next commands will create a list based on the folder structure of the iTunes Library - it does not list compilations correctly, you will need to handle them separately. This may not be what you want, especially if you want a subset of the library.
cd  ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music/Music
find . -type d -maxdepth 1 -exec find {} -type d -mindepth 1 \; | sed -e 's|./||' -e 's|/|    |'
NOTE: You may need to provide a different path to the music folder, mine has been migrated over many years & may not be the same as yours (drag & drop to get the Terminal to auto fill correcting any spaces in the path).
It outputs like …
A Tribe Called Quest    The Anthology
Add N to (X)    Add Insult to Injury
Add N to (X)    Avant Hard
In short it finds folders one level deep, then inside those find the next folder names and parse out the leading './' and convert the next slash to 4 spaces.
You may want to change the spaces to commas so you can import to a spreadsheet, however that will need careful handling when Albums or Artists contain commas.
This next one is cleaner, again run it from inside the music folder
cd  ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music/Music
ls */ | sed -e  '/^$/d' -e 's/\(.*[^/\:]\)$/     \1/'   -e 's|\/\:||'
It looks more like your original aim
Orbital
     Blue Album
     In Sides
     Orbital II
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
     Peel Sessions 1979-1983
Hope that's some food for thought.

  • IPod Touch 5th Gen: Music not listed under artists nor albums, only in Songs

I just purchased a new iPod Touch 5 Generation, I have lots of albums on my PC, tried to copy them to iTunes, works perfectly and existing in iTunes, when checked the iPod Touch 5th Generation, the songs appear under Songs But nothing under Artists nor Albums!
All my Albums are with well maintained id-tags.
    I checked the compilation, It's already un-tick.
    Please help...

Nothing shows in the artists or albums columns at all, or specific songs don't show up in the corresponding artist or album listings?
Standard things to try would be a reset, then a restore (although with a new machine that ought not to be necessary).
I'm leaning towards the possibility of multiple tags. iTunes is much happier when files have a single ID3v2.3 tag. Where multiple tags exist there is the possibility that iTunes and iOS might process different tags. Select the tracks of a test album, uncheck the tracks and sync to remove from the device. Select again, right click and use Convert ID3 Tags... > None and click OK. Repeat the process two or three times just to be sure. Then use Convert ID3 Tags... > v2.3. You will need to refetch/reembed any artwork. Check the tracks again and sync. Any better now?

  • I backed up my itunes library to an external drive. It's 119 gb.It took about an hour. When I looked at the files it list the artists and albums but then says the files are empty. On the C drive of my own computer it says they are empty. Why would this be ?

When I open up my itunes library on my hard drive it says it contains 119 gb.I tried to look up individual songs under each album and artist.Every time I open an album it says the folder is empty.I exported the library earlier to an external hard drive. It took over an hour. When I look on that library it also says the files are empty, yet when open itunes and play songs they are all still there. Why doesn't the library list each song since it says it contains 119gb?

Niel, I tried that several times but the Choose Library screen never appeared.
    Then try again.
Make sure iTunes is not running.
    Hold the Option key.
Click the iTunes icon in the dock.
    Select Choose library...
Select the iTunes folder you copied to the external
ITunes would boot up like usual but the only songs listed were in the Cloud.  None of my Apps, Playlists, etc. appeared.
Because you moved the library and have not yet told iTunes to Choose the library you moved.

  • In song view, order by artist then album year?

Is there a way, in Songs View, to order the songs first alphebetically by artist and then chronologically by album year? The default for Songs View is alphabetically by artist and then alphabetically by album title. Can this be changed? I'm using 11 for Windows but would switch to any version that supported this. Thanks for any help!

Clicking on the heading of the Album column cycles through three options:
    Album
    Album by Artist
    Album by Artist/Year
The last of these should meet your needs,  I actually use a different approach which is to define the Sort Album value for every album to be "<sort artist name> yyyymmdd", where the latter part is the date of release (or, for some live albums, recording date).  This has the advantage of listing albums in "correct" chronological order even in cases where an artist has multiple releases in a single calendar year.

  • Remote : Songs displayed in random when I choose Artists then Albums then Songs

    Hi Everyone,
I've just downloaded the Remote App on my iPhone 4 and I think I miss something.
When I browse an artist of my iMac's iTunes Library, I can see all his album, then when i browse one of these albums, songs are displayed in a random way ...
I've searched in the Remote App if there is a setting for display sort but there is nothing.
By the way, If I browse albums directley from the Album tab, songs are displayed in the right order ...
    Very strange ...
Do you have the same problem ?

I had a similar problem. Your database on your iPod is corrupted. Re-syncing will not help much. What you need to do is basically restore the iPod to factory setting and upload everything once more. It may take a little while to get done depending on the size of your iPod and your music library, but that will solve all your issues.
Please don't forget to backup all your music!

  • Sorting albums by artist then year

I have a bunch of albums imported into my itunes but I have problems sorting them the way I want it.
I want it to be sorted first by artist then by year so I have all the albums from 1 artist together in the order they was released
Now itunes sort by artist then album name
    How is that changed?

Click on the Album column header. It will change to Album by Artist, then Album by Year.
This will sort all the songs by Artist and then Year.

  • Export list of artists and their albums?

I am trying to export a list of artists and albums on my classic. I can find the Library/Export Library to xml which is way more data than I need in a format I don't, and the Library/Export Playlist to txt which is also way more data and in such an unformatted manner I don't know how to use it.
Is there a way to just get a list of the Artists and which Albums are in iTunes? Either by using the methods above in some way you'll need to explain, or another way?
    Thank you.

I figured out how to bring the txt into Excel and clean it up so it only has what I want.

  • How do I print a list of only the album names I have in Itunes.

I am new to I Tunes.
I am using Windows 7 on a Dell laptop.
I would like to print a list of only the album titles I have loaded onto my Ipod Nano.
Thanks for any and all help.

    Thank you for your reply.
In ITunes I have gone to Music.
I then did File >  Print and selected Album Listing.
When I did this it did display the albums but also all the songs on each album.
I would like to have the album names only
After you click "Album Listing," you will see a "Theme" pulldown menu that gives you the choice of "Songs by Album" or "List of Albums."  Choose the latter.

  • With IOS 7, the coverflow screen sorts strictly by album title.  How do I get sorting by artist then by title, the way it was in IOS 6 and earlier?

There seems to be no way in IOS 7 to see a list of the album titles for an artist.  The "coverflow" screen sorts just by album title, without regard for Artist, where in IOS 6 and before it sorted by artist (primary key) and then album title (secondary key).
Also, in IOS 6 and before, under the Artist search, selecting an Artist gave you a list of the album titles for that artist, then you could select the album you were interested in (or wanted to shuffle play).  But in IOS 7, the Artist search gives you a list of ALLsongs for that Artist.  There is no overview list of just album titles, and no way to shuffle just one album from that screen.  Both IOS 6 and 7 allow one to shuffle all songs for the Artist.
How do I get back the Artist/Abums sorting or grouping, either ijn Coverflow or in the Artist search?
    Thanks,
    Rainer in Waltham

The large text size makes your post almost impossible to read.
Excessive use of bold or capitals (also) makes posts difficult to read.
You can drag most of the column headings left or right, or right-click on the header to turn columns on or off.
Once you've used File > Display Duplicates or Shift > File > Display Exact Duplicates you can use File > Display All or the Display All button at the bottom of the list to restore the display.

  • How do I change my iTunes library from albums listing alphabetically back to artist listing alphabetically.  Before the last update to iTunes, everything was listed by artist, now it all is listed by album name.  I can't find a way to return it to artist

Before the latest update to iTunes, everything was listed by artist.  All albums by the same artist were listed together.  Now they are all separated by the name of the album instead of the artist.  How do I return to the other format?

Are you viewing it in Artist view or Album view? In Album view, it should still list albums by artist name, then album name. If you're in Album view, you might be looking for Artist view.

  • Artist then year of albums

I reeeeeeeeeealy want to be able to have my Artists sorted alphebetically then the Albums of that artist to be listed by the year they were released. Instead it will only allow me to have the albums listed alphebetically too. Thats just dumb. I searched for 2 hours for a way to change that but theres nothing. Is there anyway for me to have the albums listed by the year they were released for each individual artist??

.... yes, and then? Here I'll give an example:
    I'll use Green Day
Their album "Nimrod" was released in 1997
Their newer album "American Idiot" was released in 2004
If I sort by Artist, I want the songs in "Nimrod" to be listed first, because it was released first. However this is not the case; instead it sorts the albums alphebetically, so the "American Idiot" songs come first. I don't want that. Since "Nimrod" came first, I want that to be first.
But thats not it. I want them to be grouped with the same artist. Not only THAT, but I want all of my artists listed alphebetically. Another example
    NOT THIS:
Fall Out Boy: Infinity On High (2007)
Fall Out Boy: Take This to your Grave (2003)
    Green Day: American Idiot (2004)
    Green Day: Nimrod (1997)
NOT THIS because the artists are listed alphebetically, but the albums are too. The albums need to be listed according to year like this:
    LIKE THIS:
Fall Out Boy: Take This to your Grave (2003)
Fall Out Boy: Infinity On High (2007)
    Green Day: Nimrod (1997)
    Green Day: American Idiot (2004)
So how do I do THAT?

  • Why can't we go from 'genres' to 'artist' and then 'albums' in ipod for ipad?

The Ipod App on Ipad2 lets you go from 'artists' to their albums and songs. You can see a list of all songs sorted by albums for each artist.
When you sort by 'genres' you only get thumbnails of genres (instead of a list) which rotate to show songs directly.
I'd like to get the same interface then iTunes on Mac with the navigation columns to go from genres to artists to albums and then songs.
    Is that possible?
    Thanks

Same here. It's a very clumsy UI. On Mac, iPod, iPhone, it's always been genre-artist-album, as it should be. For some bizarre reason apple decided to do away with that logical UI convention on the iPad only. But who wants a list of hundreds of "songs" after clicking a genre. What makes it worse is that they aren't even grouped by album or collection, but in alphabetical order. What? Who chooses/seeks music by what letter a song starts with? I don't even know the names of most of the "songs" I have because I listen mostly to jazz and classical. I sure hope they get a different UI person or team on the Music app for iPad.

  • I use an iPod nano 5th generation. I have had it for 2 years now and then after about a year when I plugged in my iPod to my computer, the iPod is read but the tab where I would always go that showed my list of artists to sync to my iPod does not show up

I use an iPod nano 5th generation. I have had it for about two years now and after about one year, I plugged in my iPod into my computer to sync more music. Here is the problem: The tab where you go to sync music to your iPod and shows the list of artists and songs you want to sync to the iPod, the tab I can get to but the list of songs and artists does not show up and the only way I can sync music to my iPod is to basically wipe my iPod and start from scratch. Obviously, I do not want to do that because I do not have all the songs in my library that I have on my iPod. I have uninstalled iTunes and then re-installed it, but it did not work and I do not know what else to do. I would really appreciate helpful guidance to get it fixed if it can be fixed. Thanks in advance

  • How do I get all the songs from an album to show in the album view?  Currently, if an album lists the artist plus a guest artist, those are shown separately and appear to be two different albums on my iPod.  How do I get all the songs on that album togeth

How do I get all the songs from an album to show in the album view?  Currently, if an album lists the artist plus a guest artist, those are shown separately and appear to be two different albums on my iPod.  How do I get all the songs on that album together on my iPod?  If the album is a collaboration wtih many artists, each sond may appear as a separate album.

I used to have this problem.
First, you need to go back on iTunes
you need to go to each of the songs that are having this problem
Click the album so all the songs drop down
Right click the songs that have this problem
    Click ' Get info '
Click the tab that says " info '
The box that says ' album artist ' should probably be empty (correct me if I'm wrong)
Click it and type the artist of the entire album, NOT the songs guest artist
    as such,
    ARTIST
    JAY-Z Feat. Justin Timberlake
    ALBUM ARTIST
    JAY-Z
These should be separate for each artist
If you write the same album artists for each song by that artist, all the songs should be on 1 album

  • When I import a CD album that includes songs with co-artists, the album is saved once with all of the songs with the main artist only, and then one album for each song with a different co-artist.  How can I avoid that or fix that result after the fact.

When I import a CD ablum that includes songs with co-artists, the album is saved once under the album name with all the songs from the main artist; then each song with a different co-artist is saved separately under the album title with just that song.  Who do I prevent that or fix it after the fact, i.e., copy the single songs to the main album?
