Printing Newbie

Hi Everyone,
I've been shooting for quite some time and using Lightroom since the very first release.  I've also begun using Photoshop for some work, but I'm still quite new to Photoshop.  I just finished a year in India and Nepal where I grew considerably as a photographer!  I'm a serious amateur, who would love to go pro one day =)
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/phototemple/popular-interesting/
Anyhow, to my question(s)!  There has been a lot of interest in my photos since, and I need to print some for an exhibition and for a few commercial customers.   I have very little experience with print.  I've spent the past week trolling the web for information on printing, working with several commercial print shops, some of my pro photographer friends, and so forth...and all I can say is that I'm overwhelmed by the amount of information (and conflicting information!)  I'm hoping some of you might help be able to help me get moving in the right direction!
Some facts:
I use a Canon 5D2 and I shoot RAW
iMac 2011, i7, 16GB, SSD.  Latest Lightroom and latest Photoshop.  Calibrated using an i1 Pro.
I don't own an printer, I am trying to select a commercial print house to use
I'm using ICC profiles for softproofing from the two commercial print shops I'm going to experiment with (Nations Photo Labs, USA and Pikto, Toronto)
I live close to Toronto, Canada
Now, where to start!
I'm very confused about what colour space is ideal.  Every print shop I've spoken to insists that sRGB is the best (and is the only colour space they accept).  However, I've read from many sources that Adobe1998 should be used for print (with a good printer) as it'll provide a wider gamut of colours.  My pro photographer friends are quite divided on this issue!  Some saying it's nonsense to print sRGB, others saying I won't see a difference.
I know there is no magic answer to this, but I'm sure there must be a rough guideline.  Practically, how large can you blow up a 5D2 (20~ MP) image using Photoshop before there is noticable significant degredation in the image?  Currently I'm sizing my images myself before submitting to a print shop.  Some of them I want to print quite large.
What are thoughts on sharpening images for print?  Will soft proofing effectively show the impact of sharpening?  Or is it trial and error to get a feel for it?
I'm using sRGB right now, mainly because that's all the commercial printers will accept.  I set the colourspace in Photoshop to sRGB, but when I export the image (as 100% quality JPEG) there is an option to embed the original colour space.  What impact does this have on the print process?
That's it for now.  Thank you to any of you who can donate some of your time and lend a hand =)

The RGB tag will depend on the output device.  Your friends that are telling you Adobe RGB will have a wider gamut than sRGB are correct.  I've used Colormatch RGB and I've used ProPhoto RGB.  Each one needs to be tested and each has its own pluses and minuses.  Get in the habit of contacting the print vendor and see what they require to output the pics.  Give them a test file and have them print the file in each tag so you can make a visual comparison.  let me try to answer some of your concerns:
"I'm very confused about what colour space is ideal.  Every print shop I've spoken to insists that sRGB is the best (and is the only colour space they accept).  However, I've read from many sources that Adobe1998 should be used for print (with a good printer) as it'll provide a wider gamut of colours.  My pro photographer friends are quite divided on this issue!  Some saying it's nonsense to print sRGB, others saying I won't see a difference."
You could very well see a difference.  Like I said, have the print vendor print your file in a.) sRGB; b.) Adobe RGB; c.) ProPhoto RGB; and 4.) Colormatch RGB from your RAW files.  Do not convert them, have the vendor do it.
"I know there is no magic answer to this, but I'm sure there must be a rough guideline.  Practically, how large can you blow up a 5D2 (20~ MP) image using Photoshop before there is noticable significant degredation in the image?  Currently I'm sizing my images myself before submitting to a print shop.  Some of them I want to print quite large."
Depends again on the output device.  Always check with the vendor.  My guess, if you've got a 30"x40" @ 72ppi; you might be able to enlarge it 120 - 133%.
"What are thoughts on sharpening images for print?  Will soft proofing effectively show the impact of sharpening?  Or is it trial and error to get a feel for it?"
What you see on your monitor will print sharper.  Most digital cameras over sharpen.  Be careful.  Try unsharp mask @ 150 and see what happens.  But, overall, you shouldn't have to sharpen unless you moved your hand during the shoot and the print is blurry.
"I'm using sRGB right now, mainly because that's all the commercial printers will accept.  I set the colourspace in Photoshop to sRGB, but when I export the image (as 100% quality JPEG) there is an option to embed the original colour space.  What impact does this have on the print process?"
You'll have to ask your print vendor.  It should not matter.  Typically your embedded tag can be converted later on in the print driver.

  • Wireless Network/printing Newbie Questions....

Okay, first of all I love Airport and OSX Tiger on my new MacBook. I recieve a strong wireless internet connection in my Los Angeles apartment, and I have NO idea where it's coming from! (my neighbors? The police station across the street,? Just in the air?!?)
I want a wireless printer. My apple store highly recommended either an Airport Extreme or Express with a printer attached to the USB port...
My question is this: If I just buy a laser printer with built in wireless (802.11b/g) network capability (say the HP LaserJet 1022NW), can I just set up my MacBook to communicate directly to the printer with Airport via the 802.11b/g standard? I notice the Airport menu gives me a "Create Network" option...?
    Is it this easy?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I notice the Airport menu gives me a "Create Network" option...?
This option is for creating computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) networks utilizing either the AirPort menu or Internet Connect for creating and connecting to this type of network.
It may be possible for a wireless printer, which supports the "ad-hoc" network type, to connect to the "computer-to-computer" network. (With "ad-hoc," as opposed to an "infrastructure" network type, the wireless network would not require a router or access point.)

  • Newbie: How to print scrolled data?

    Please help a newbie
    Acrobat 9 on Windows 7
I created a 7-page PDF form with scrolling fields that allow the user to enter paragraphs in limited spaces with only the first few words visible.
How can I export the data or even better, print, such that the data in each field is printed on a separate page in its entirety - much the way comments can be printed?
Ultimately, this fillable form is a contract. The data describes the requirements and scopes the project. We need to enable people to enter all the detail they want but then sign a hard copy that shows the data they added to the fillable form.
So far, all I've been able to do is to print the document as if it's a flat piece of paper with only those first few words visible.
    Thanks so much!

How large do you think a field would need to be to print the entire contents? One idea is to prepare a special PDF with fields with the same name, but much larger (perhaps an entire page) and set the fields to not allow scrolling and a font size of Auto. You could then export the form data and import it into this new form. Since the fields have the same name, they will be populated with the same values and you can print them in their entirety.
You can also use templates to automatically add pages to the existing form. These new pages would include the scrolling fields, but larger and non-scrolling so all of the text is shown. Adding the pages can be done with JavaScript or by manually turning on the hidden template pages in Acrobat. The latter is the most seamless approach, but it does involve a bit of scripting. It's not difficult though. Post again if you'd like help with it.

  • Newbie question: Send data to printer from ABAP program

    Hello, I am a newbie.
I do not use  SAPScript nor SmartForms.

With the parameters IMMEDIATELY, KEEP IN SPOOL, NEW LIST IDENTIFICATION and COVER TEXT, flag must be a literal or character field with the length 1. If flag is blank, the parameter is switched off, but any other character switches the parameter on. You can also omit any of the sub-options of PRINT ON. mode with SAP COVER PAGE can accept the values ' ', 'X' and 'D'. These values have the following meaning:
' ' : Do not output cover sheet
    'X' : Output cover sheet
'D' : Cover sheet output according to printer setting
armode with ARCHIVE MODE can accept the values '1', '2' and '3'. These values have the following meaning:
    '1' : Print only
    '2' : Archive only
    '3' : Print and archive
arparams with ARCHIVE PARAMETERS must have the same structure as ARC_PARAMS. This parameter should only be processed with the function module GET_PRINT_PARAMETERS.
    Effect
Output is to the SAP spool database with the specified parameters. If you omit one of the parameters, the system uses a default value. Before output to the spool, you normally see a screen where you can enter and/or modify the spool parameters. However, you can suppress this screen with the following statement:
... TO SAP-SPOOL WITHOUT SPOOL DYNPRO
You could use this option if all the spool parameters have already been set!
    Note
When specifying the LINE-SIZE, you should not give any value > 132 because most printers cannot print wider lists.
    Addition 2
... SPOOL PARAMETERS params(structure with print
    parameters)
... ARCHIVE PARAMETERS arparams(Structure with archive
    parameters)
... WITHOUT SPOOL DYNPRO(skip print parameters
    screen)
    Effect
Output is to the SAP spool database with the specified parameters. The print parameters are passed by the field string params which must have the structure of PRI_PARAMS. The field string can be filled and modified with the function module GET_PRINT_PARAMETERS. The specification arparams with ARCHIVE PARAMETERS must have the structure of ARC_PARAMS. This parameter should only be processed with the function module GET_PRINT_PARAMETERS. Before output to the spool, you normally see a screen where you can enter and/or modify the spool parameters. However, you can suppress this screen with the following statement:

  • [newbie] Printing - colors are strangely subdued

I have searched, but wasn't able to find an answer.
I'm new to lightroom (love it), and am printing to a regular color printer (not a photo printer).
If I print my .jpg from IE, it reflects colors pretty accurately.    If I print from LR (which I'd prefer - it sizes the photo better to fit on one page) the colors are very very subdued, and don't look at all like what is on the screen.  Same printer each time.
I'm using default settings, nothing fancy.
Guidance for a newbie would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Jessica

    Hi Jessica,
Try it Dorin's way first. It's fast, easy, and cheap and if it works and solves it for you that fast, you're done.
But on my system, sRGB is not even a possible setting when I select Other under Print module > Print Job (bottom of right hand column) > Color Management > Profile.
If it's not for you, either, or if you try and it doesn't help, there were two other things I did which fixed it for me.
First, I have a Canon printer, and I download a color profile from the Canon website that matches my specific model printer to both the Canon paper I'm using (Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy) and a setting I pick for Print Quality under Printer Properties, a sliding scale from 1 to 5--in my case, I use setting 2. I download the profile I need (which will be a file ending in .icm) to my C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color folder, and then when I click Other under Print module in LR, I can select that .icm file I downloaded. Then from Print module in LR, I have to click the Print button and Properties > Main tab, and set Paper to Photo Paper Plus Glossy and set Print Quality: Custom > Set button > Quality: 2 and Halftoning: Diffusion > OK. Now, LR, Windows, and my printer are all set on the same page.
The settings that work for my Canon printer would likely be very different for your printer, particularly one made by a different company. You wouldn't even likely see the same options under your printer settings. But this gives you an idea how you can get LR and printer on the same page regarding the paper being used and the color settings.
The other thing that can be vital to resolving this common issue of matching what appears on the monitor to what comes out the printer with Lightroom is getting a color calibrator, a device you attach to your computer and run every so often with the included software.  I find that the free software color calibrators you can find such as the one Adobe provides where you set your monitor based on how things look on the screen don't do nearly as good a job as a hardware color calibrator. Many pros use very expensive ones, but even a $100 one such as the Spyder3 Express on amazon.com can make a huge difference in getting really good prints. It is very important with color calibrators to read and follow all the instructions in the box and in the software very carefully. Some people just try to plug in a color calibrator and use it shortcutting the instructions and then are surprised when the device makes the monitor or printed color look worse.

  • MacBook - Newbie: Need help on printing wirelessly to XP shared printer

MacBook - Newbie: Need help on printing to XP shared printer
Bear with me please. I read tons of articles on this but somehow as a newbie to MAC (girlfriends sick daughter), I am missing something. 10.5.2
Currently, she can print directly if we plug in the HP Deskjet printer directly via USB to the MACBook. No problem.
When we first got the MACBOOK I tried setting up the MACBOOK wirelessly to recognize the workgroup where the printer was attached via USB to the Windows XP PC. However it printed out garbage since I did not know there was a difference between XP printing and MAC (Gutenberg/gimp printing/drivers).
Now I know there is a difference.
But in reading various instructions, I no longer can find how to connect the MAC to the Windows workgroup. Note we do have a printer set up currently as USB-HP Deskjet on the Macbook (not sure I need to delete it yet).
I went to System Preferences on MACBOOK and clicked on printers, more printers. In the drop down box was CANON, APPLETALK, IP HP printing and Firewire. There was no WINDOWS selection as I saw in other online web instructions.
So not sure how to proceed to find a way to:
    1. Connect to Windows workgroup (click on what exactly), step by step please!!
    2. Add correct HP Deskjet 5490 printer (perhaps there is one with Gutenberg or perhaps I need Gutenprint-really not sure what I am talking about)
Thanks so much in advance. Fiancé's kid has had her cancer recur in a different place and someone was nice enough to buy her a MACBOOK as a gift.
    Sincerely
    Peter

OK...I figured it out...no need to reply.  I noticed that there was another Protocol to use to set up the printer on the Mac, I was using LPD, so I switched it to HP Jet Direct-socket, and it prints fine...thanks.  I am curious as to why LPD wouldn't work; if anyone has that answer I would like to know...thanks
Any chance of posting the Protocol you used to connect to your printer with your laptop?  I'm have the exact same problem printing from my MB.  Same error message "..is busy".

  • IMac Newbie - Airport to WIFI printer help

I've just bought a Lexmark printer to go with my core duo intel iMac. The printer has WIFI and I thought I might be able to connect it through Airport?
It has USB if I have to use it, but wireless would be awesome.
I've got no idea about Airport as I'm a recent PC convert since my mate sold me his iMac.
I did try to create a network but I wasn't really sure what I was doing.... Passwords and hex and all that and then not knowing how to change or delete a network I may have created - too much in one night for a newbie.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, okay. Well, no, you're right, you can do what you describe. Here's how.
First, find out from the printer's documentation what kind of encryption type it supports. You'll be looking for the phrase "WEP" or ideally "WPA" or "WPA2".
Next, on the Mac, go to System Preferences, Sharing, and Internet Sharing.
For "Share your connection from" choose your (USB?) device.
For "To computers using" choose "Airport". Then set up a wireless network name and choose the appropriate encryption type that the printer will support. As I say, ideally this will be WPA or WPA2, and choose a good 8-character password. If you're using WPA/WPA2, you don't need to worry about hex characters (that's an old WEP scheme).
Now you have a wireless network, and you should follow your printer's instructions to join it. Your Mac will essentially be the "wireless router" or "gateway" and its IP will be 192.168.2.1; your printer's IP address will probably be 192.168.2.2, but you should try to allow it to get an IP address automatically.
Let us know if that works.

  • Mac newbie printing problems

    Hi,
As the subject line says, I'm a Mac newbie. I've been on a PC for about 10 years and just got my mac last Friday (how time flies!), so I'm obviously completely unfamiliar with Macs and how to mess with them.
In any case, I've kept my PC for a couple of programs that I'd like to use and need my printer for one of them. I have my printer connected to my iMac and I've networked the two computers to transfer files back and forth. So my question is this: How do I set up my computers so that I can print through my iMac from my PC? I don't want to have to rearrange the entire office just to use the printer.
    Any help would be great.
    Thank you!

    Things to check -
    1. Set your Mac to be in the same Workgroup as the PC. The PC's workgroup can be found by right clicking on My Computer, select tab Computer name.
On Tiger, you set the workgroup in the Utility Directory Access - I hope Kappy can tell you where to do that on Leopard.
    2. Driver - once you can find the printer in the same workgroup, when you add the printer on the PC you will need to select a postscript driver - if the printer you're trying to use is postscript, fine, its driver will work. But if the printer is a typical inkjet, you need to select some other color postscript driver on the PC, because printer queues on Macs expect to receive postscript. The Apple Color LaserWriter xx driver included on my Windows XP works well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Printing Table - Newbie

A colleague sent me a spread sheet made on Excel. It's 1036 pages long but only contains a table taking up 2 pages. How do I reduce the size of the "sheet" to just the two pages or something smaller than 1036 pages. Also, how do I print just the table? I'm a newbie at Numbers but seem to recall a feature on Excel that would print an "area". I've been all over the Helps but not finding how to print anything short of all pages. When I go to print, it wants to load all pages even the empty ones. I'm sure this is a simple task but I just can't get a handle on it. Thanks, Craig

  • Newbie (!) - created a report; have to set parameters to print? How to print it all, please?

    Hi,
I confess I'm a newbie. I've created my first table and a report based on that table. When I try to print the report, I get a dialogue box asking for the parameters for certain fields. How do I indicate "print all"? Can I save this setting, to
print all of this document, every time? Do I have to input the parameters for each field, each time I print the document?
I see the value of setting parameters, but don't need to filter this report.
Thanks so very much!  Endless gratitude!

That would explain it.  Because the report no longer recognizes the references it contains to the div_cde column, it treats it as a parameter.  Hence the prompt.  You can change the report design so that every reference to div_cde becomes
one to div.  This could be in a number of places such as the ControlSource property of a control in the form, or the name of a column (field) by which the report is grouped or ordered, so an easier solution might be to change the table design, renaming
the div column back to div_cde.  The report should then work without amendment.

  • Newbie Mac owner can't get HP printer to work

    Hi all,
I have searched in the forum, but can't find anything that really suits my needs. I have an HP psc 750 that only seems to print when the HP printer CD is in the drive. It won't print all the time even then. I install it and it says "installation complete" , I take out the CD, then when I look in Apps, it shows the HP 750 as the default printer. However, when I try to print something, it gets stuck saying it's "connecting" and "Waiting for device". I have tried turning off the printer, then back on. I have tried reinstalling the printer... Nothing seems to work.
And, stupid question, I know, but what is Leopard, and do I need it? Real Mac newbie here, I tell you! TIA!!

Take a look if your printer is indeed using the drivers by going at he print & fax tab on system preferences, or you can try and download a newer version from the HP site.
Leopard is the operating system of your apple. 10.5.4 is the version you are using but Leopard is its name. Tiger for instance was the previous version at 10.4.*

  • I have just converted from PC to iMac. Yay. But pls be nice to me; I am back to newb! Running Lion. Have connected a Time Capsule as both a backup and WAP. I want to be able to join the network with my iPad, iPhone, iPod to print. How can I do this?

Can I do this using the Time Capsule. I am not tech, so bear with me. Can I get the iPad to connect wirelessly to the TC, which connects wirelessly to the Canon MP495? Or, can I connect/network the iPad to the iMac to print?
Either way, or if there is any other solution, I would appreciate if someone would walk me through it, or point me to a plain-speaking resource.
    Thankyou.
Actually, one more: I would like to connect my HP laptop as well. I have heard this is not simple, but possible.

You can create a wifi network with your TC, and you can join this network with your iPad. However, your printer does not support the AirPrint protocol, so you will not be able to print from your iPad, unless you load additional software.
    These are the steps:
    1.  (You may have completed this step already) Set up your TC to create a wireless network. You can do this from AirPort Utility on your Mac or from the AirPort Utility App on your iPad (free download from the App Store).
    2. From your iPad, go to settings / wifi and join the network.
    3. Download the Canon iPhone App from the App store on your iPad
    4. You can now print photos from your iPad to your Canon printer.
If you want full functionality, (not just photos), there is software for your Mac that makes your printer available to your iPad through AirPrint (Printopia). The downside is, you have to purchase it, and you have to have your Mac running when you want to print from your iPad.
    Good luck!

  • I'm unable to print from safari and email on iPad 2, I'm newbie

    Hi there,
I have the new iPad 2, I understand that it should be able to print from safari and email. I've seen AirPrint floated around, but it doesn't appear to be an app in the app store since my searches come up empty. I've printed before from my iTouch using PrintMagic but it's cut and paste to plain text document and I print wirelessly to the printers connected to my iMac.
I would really like the email and the web page to remain formated. I've seen Print Central but it seems convoluted to get it to print, I've also seen a youTube video print directly from Safari and email programs that's desirable but the videos didn't show how to set up printer (it's kind of Walter Foster) there seems to be some steps that are missing. Could someone fill in the blanks? it would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    JLS

Ok.  Airprint is built into the ipad.  There is no app. It is a printer driver system that some printer manufacturers have incorporated and some have not.
If you have an airprint printer, then printing is simple and formatted like you expect itmto be.
If you do not have an airprint enabled printer, then you need an app, like the ones you mentioned, and are stuck with the issues you mention.
Nobody wants to buy a new printer.  But they start at well under 100.  The next time you need to refill your rprint cartriges, you might find it worthwhile to do the switch to a new airprint printer.
Here is the current list of airprint enabled printers.

  • LiveCycle Newbie: Validate Before Printing Form

I have a form created in Adobe Acrobat Pro that I have brought into LiveCycle to add print and emails buttons to. However, I need a specific functionality added to the standard "Print" button. It is a legal form that has required fields and the client needs to fill in all the required fields on the form BEFORE printing and signing it. We have had problems in the past with clients not filling in all the required fields before sending it back to them. So, I need to somehow make the print button check to make sure all the required fields are filled in and send a warning message and/or prevent printing if all the required fields are not filled in. Is there a way to do this?
I am using LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2 and I am VERY new to this program so the simpler the solution the better.
Thanks in advance for the help!

    Hi
I would add another fake print button over the top of the existing one but just add a standard button not a print button.
then to the click scripting event in the script editor add something like the below
    if ((TextField1.rawValue == null) or (TextField2.rawValue == null) & (CheckBox1.rawValue == "1")) then
xfa.host.messageBox("You must enter the required data to be able to print this form")
    else
    PrintButton1.execEvent("click")
    endif
as you are relatively new to this. Incase the above it giberish to you I will try to explain what the above is doing.
the above is an if statement using formcalc (which is the default on button objects)
as this code is inserted in to the click event  (you can see what event you are looking from the dropdown at the top left of the script editor window.... make sure click is selected, and formcalc is set in the drop down to the right of the script editor window.
each bracketed command e.g. (TextField1.rawValue == null) is address a single field in your form. You will need to make sure you adjust these names and the path to these names so it may end up looking like (Form1.subform.TextField1.rawValue == null).
A quick tip to ensure you have the right path is with the cursor in the script window move your mouse over the field you wish to address, hold Ctrl button and click the field. This will load the field path in to the script editor and all you have to add is the .rawValue portion of the command.
You require '==' because means 'is equals to' in formcalc
the null term means 'if the field is empty'
if you have checkboxes that require to be ticked you must address them and look for a value of 1 (as in the example) as as default when a checkbox is selected it has a value of 1.
you can use or commands or & commands between expressions.
please note all the comments together require brackets round them hence the double brackets at the start and end of the expression.
once you have added all the required expressions to the top line
the second line is saying if the statement returns a true value  e.g. in our example a true value would be returned if TextField1 or TextField2 empty AND the checkBox1 is not ticked
then this will pop up a message box saying you have not entered the required fields to print this form
then the else statement says to click the print button for the user.... which will print the form as the print button does now.
I know it may seem complicated but it honestly is not that difficult.
Feel free to come back to me if you need any further help.
    Regards
    Graham
