Printing on an old HP LaserJet 5p

Hello: I am having problems using thois printer. I am running the latest Tiger OS on an old Pismo Firewire PowerBook. I connected a USB to serial adapter, selected the 5p as a new printer; then my computer said it was installing the required drivers to communicate with the 5p.
I next tried to print from both Acrobat and MS Word. The computer spit out several pages--a combination of blank sheets and garbled text. The text says things like:
dup33 /zero put
dup 34 /four put
There are many lines of this.
Another sheet says:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%RBINumCopies: 1
%%Pages: (atend)
And so on....
This printer worked back when I ran OS 9, but back them, the adapter came with driver software on a disc. I assume that disc won't work on OS Tiger (?).
So, I'm guessing that the solution to this is simple (I hope).
Please let me know if you know what I should do next.
Many thanks!

Hi Adam
Instead of using the USB to serial adaptor which is fine on OS 9, for Mac OS X you need a parallel to USB adaptor cable.
I have connected a HP LaserJet 4L to Mac OS X 10.3.9 using a Keyspan parallel to USB adaptor cable. Whilst your printer is a different model they are both LaserJets and use Localtalk / parallel for OS X. You will require the same hardware setup. It is more than a connector, the cable it has a small converter card in it.
Keyspan parallel USB printer adaptor
With that cable, you would then install the printer again, but this time it will give you the proper output.

  • Win 7 x64 printer driver for old HP LaserJet 5si

OK, I know everyone's dealt with one of these along the line, and I thought I had these dang printers figured out completely, but this one is a flat out freak, and anyone who can help, I appreciate it.  Working in an environment with several new Dell
Desktops (Precision T3500s) with Win7 x64 installed on them.  They have an old HP LaserJet 5si on the network.  Several of the Win7 computers on the network are already connected to it by the private IP,  and they work.  I just installed
a new client, and trying to install to the printer by IP, can't find the driver.  Look on HP's site for Win7 x64, and they say "it's already installed on Win7, we're not giving you a driver".  Well, it's not installed on Win7 x64, not when I try
to navigate to it when installing the printer, there is no "LaserJet 5si" listed.  Weird thing is, when I look at the other computers, and RE-Install that same printer, I CAN find the "LaserJet 5si" printer listed.  OK, so I must not have all
the updates on my new computer, right?  YES I DO, WINDOWS UPDATE TELLS ME IT'S ALL UP TO DATE.  WTF???  Thanks in advance.

OK, I figured it out FINALLY.  The problem was with the "Windows Update" feature within the "Install Printer" wizard.  A folder called "Software Distribution" on the root of C: was causing the trouble.  Found this fix, the Windows Update feature
then worked, then the correct driver installed.  Dang there's 6 hours of work...hope this helps someone avoid the trouble.
These steps did resolve the issue:
    1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
    2. Click Sevices Tab and then Services Button (Bottom Right)
    3. Under Name find "Windows Update"
    4. Right click "Windows Update" and select Stop. do not close
    5. Open Window Exploper and browse to C:\Windows
    6. Delete the Folder "SoftwareDistribution"
    7. Go back to Servies, Right click "Windows Update" and select Start
After this, do your usual routine to install the printer, and select "Windows Update" to find driver (it shouldn't fail now), and afterwards, you should be able to find the correct (in this case LaserJet 5si) driver. Yay!

  • Printing basics with Old HP LaserJet

I have a new Airport Extreme and would like to use an Airport express to connect my network to an HP4050. I have searched the discussions and have seen a number of posts that were relevant, but quite technical. My question is more basic.
The HP4050 has the old centronix style printer cable. If I use an Airport Express (AE), do I simply need to purchase as USB to centronix cable to make the connection between the AE and the HP4050? Will the AE act as a print server?
    OR
Do I need to purchase a JetDirect for the HP4050 card to act as a print server. Then, I would connect the HP4050 to the AE via an ethernet cable?
    Many thanks.

I rolled the dice and purchased the least expensive JetDirect card I could. Cost $20 with shipping; a 600N. After putting the card in and connecting the network cable, I was able to get the IP address by printing the setup page directly from the printers menu (one page for the printer and one page for the JetDirect card). I was able to get the printer installed by using the IP address in the Airport Utility (manual setup).
I have a Vista laptop as well which was able to see the printer and connect as well (check your firewall settings!!).
My next step is to see if I can get an Airport Express to make the network connection so that I can locate the printer where I want without a hardwire connection.

  • Using old HP Laserjet printer with iBook

I have an old HP Laserjet 4M that I'd like to use with my new iBook. Problem is that it's got a parallel port and a serial port. I read online that Laserjets do not use serial ports, and that I should use AppleTalk. Anyone know how to set this up? And can I use the Keyspan serial to usb cable in this case?
    Need much help.

  • Lost Printer Features Pane for HP LaserJet 4050 and Color LaserJet 4550

    Hello,
I am trying to restore the Printer Features Pane for 2 different Hewlett-Packard printers we have connected to our LAN.
The Printers Features Pane is available on several of our older iMacs but NOT several of the newest iMacs just recently installed.
After doing some reading in the discussion forum I thought this was due to an erroneous PPD file and replaced both PPD files on the new iMac (with the absent Printer Feature Pane) with the PPD files copied from the old iMac (with the correctly functioning Printer Feature Pane) . I actually copied the PPD files into both of the following locations:
    • /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
    • /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
Unfortunately this did not work even when i deleted the old printer, replaced the old PPD files with the new ones (actually replaced the new ones with the older ones from the previous iMacs on which the Printer Features Pane was working as anticipated), restarted the machine and then added the printer selecting the correct PPD file. All machines are running X.4.10
I am sure this is a simple fix that i am just overlooking but really need to get back the option of printing to the "Letterhead" tray of our printers.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

    Paul,
Below is the best I can do to portray the visual appearance of the print dialog boxes for
Computers that DON'T provide the Printer Features option:

I wish I could attach some screen shots as they are usually my best way to convey the visual appearance of the interface. But hopefully the information above will suffice.
The following is an extract from the PPD for the LaserJet 4050 (same file on both machines that display and don't display a printer features option) that appears to be the salient area of the file for dealing with this functionality. :

I don't know if it helps you to know that the Printer Features option did work on my current G5 tower, but following an erase and install that functionality has been lost.

  • Enabling the printing function of your HP Laserjet M1005 printer

If you wonder how to install the printing function of your HP Laserjet M1005 printer, here is listed a bullet list of the actions. This has just been tested out thanks to the Support team from Germany
Go to the page http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=1 839459&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=1839458&taskId=135 and select the link Mac OS X; download the link "HP LaserJet M1005 MFP Mac OS X Full Software Solution"
Use the opportunity to update your printer firmware by selecting the link "Printer Firmware Update"
Shutdown your Mac and start up in the safe boot mode (should be the combined keyboard shift and power on/off - refer to the Apple web site for details)
Run the downloaded SW package listed in the step 1
Go and select under system settings printer and fax, follow the step-by-step instructions to have a printer installed
Shutdown your Mac and start up again in the safe boot mode
Connect your printer and the printer SW installation message shoud pop up requesting you to install it
SW download process should appear and run
Be aware that just the printing function will be available - no scanning function so far
For those who may be interested in knowing why safe boot mode: it is likelz that my anti-virus SW Kaspersky denied the installation.

  • Is there a way to change the default print tray on an HP LaserJet 500 color M551 Printer

    Hi
Is there a way to setup the default print tray for a HP LaserJet 500 color M551 printer to be tray 2 printing both online and direct?
If so what would be the best way to go about implementing it?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Usually, you can change the default paper trays through the control panel and through the Embedded Web server (EWS).
Check the settings on your control panel. Here is a link to the User Guide, check out page 94 and see if that helps you out.
    m551 User Guide
For the EWS, put the printer IP address into your browser, then go to the tab that would list tray settings. Not sure exactly which tab has it for this printer series, but on other printer series it is on the system tab under paper setup.

uninstalled epson printer from control panel...installed new brother printer....now i cannot print anything .pdf old or newly downloaded@

For starters, what exactly do you mean by "cannot print"?
Are you getting an error message? Are you trying to print from within Reader or are you opening these in the browser? What version of Reader. Even though it's a new printer, the drivers that came with it (or the ones that were already on your computer) may be old so, have you downloaded the most recent drivers from the Brother site?

  • Need a printer for my old iBook (old apps won't translate) but also for a MacBook Pro, 10.6.8! Anything compatible?

Need a printer for my old iBook (old apps won't translate) but also for a MacBook Pro, 10.6.8! Anything compatible?

If I understand this correctly, you wish to print from the iBook under Mac OS 9.2.x and from the MacBook Pro under Mac OS X 10.6.8 (no AppleTalk support in the latter).
What type of printer did you have in mind? Does it have to be colour? Otherwise, a monochrome laser printer may be the best choice (high print quality and a low per page cost). A networkable PostScript printer may be the most compatible. Additional information would make it easier for someone here to suggest a solution.
If you would be willing to accept some extra work and certain limitations, another way could possibly be to "print" to a PDF file on the iBook via a printer driver called PrintToPDF, and then transfer this file to the MacBook Pro and carry out the "real" printing there.

  • TS3147 Photos print very dark on HP1025 LaserJet, and solutions?

Photos print very dark on HP1025 LaserJet color printer. I have installed and reinstalled software several times, both from CD and HP site.
Asides from going into PhotoShop and manually manipulating each color photo, is there something simpler to correct this problem?
I have read similar comments on other boards, and have not found a solution. Is this just the nature of the beast for the HP1025 for Mac?

What system and iPhoto versions are you running?  What type of Mac do you have?  Have you tried calibrating the screen in the System/Display/Color preference pane.
Does the print window for the HP have any of the options that are shown in this screenshot for Epson or Canon printers?
If it does you can change the color management and color matching and color management to see if you can get what you want.  Once you do you can save the settings as a Preset like the R280 Color Glossy in the screenshot.

  • Upgraded arris hi-speed router to my xfinity, now my old hp4000 laserjet won't print ethernet routed

I just upgraded to an Arris hi-speed router to my Xfinity but now my old HP 4000n Laserjet won't print ethernet routed... What to do?
It worked simply fine from my previous Netgear Router that I ran off the previous old xfinity modem (w/o builtin) router. Much Thanks for your step by step instruction.  I am running Windows 7 fyi.

On the front of the printer, probably in the Network menu, can you tell if the printer has a valid IP address, indicating that it is properly connected to your new router?
If so (and I would guess that it is), then your PC needs to re-establish communication with it:
First, go to Start > Control Panel > Devices & Printers and delete all instances of the printer.
    Next:
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing. Get its IP from a Network Test printed from the front panel of the printer.
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Devices & Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.
