Printing on intel iMac to network printer

when selecting print from the menu of any program running in 10.4 (i suspect mostly programs running in rosetta) it takes a few seconds to bring up the print window.
is this simply a symptom of emulation (i do not notice this problem happening with native builds)?
this seems like a small problem but when running in an office environment it really slows things down and trips up quite a few people.

After many hours of researching, I found a solution:
I changed the printer driver from (in my printer's case) 'HP Laserjet 2100 Series' to 'HP Laserjet 2100 Series - Gutenprint v5.2.3'.
I'm assuming that the 'Gutenprint' driver is one which can be used for non-usb printers, potentially connected to a shared computer. In any case, it works now.

  • Printing with a networked Canon iR 3220 and my Intel iMac

I am at my wits end and I hope someone can help.
I am the sole Mac user in my company. I have a brand new, shiny 24" dual processor (intel) iMac running OS 10.4.9, that is connecting wirelessly to our network. We have a mixture of IIS and Linux servers (I believe the IIS is solely for the Windows Exchange server) Ther are 30 or so printers on the network and the one I am supposed to be printing to is a Canon Image Runner 3220 (iR 3220).
I am no Mac newbie, but I can't get the thing to print correctly. I have updated the driver from Canon (v. 1.70PS) and the PPDs (v. 2.25), followed the instructions and it will not automatically select the correct PPD. When I reset the PPD manually, it spools to the printer, but then stops all my print jobs. I try to resume and it spools and stops.
I have tried adding the printer via CanonIP, LPR, Appletalk (which gets me a message that I am connected incorrectly), setting up a sacrificial altar to the printing gods...nothing seems to work. I've tried using the iR 3200 driver and that doesn't work either.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any help I can get at this point.
    Mike

    Hello Mike,
The first thing you need to do is determine if the iR C3220 is using the Canon printer board or the imagePASS-C1/C2 print server option. If you look at the back of the iR C3220, and there is a rectangular box with an Ethernet cable connecting to the copier, and what looks something like a SCSI-2 cable also connected between the white box and the copiers interface board, then you have the imagePASS controller. This device requires a different driver to the PS v1.70 and PPD v2.x you are currently using. It also requires a queue name of 'print' or 'direct' (or 'hold' if you don't want the job to print) and it must be entered in lower case.
Since it sounds like there are PC's on the network, have a look at their printer setup and see which driver they are using. You can also check their port config to see how they are connecting.
If the iR C3220 doesn't have the imagePASS print controller and the PC users have the PCL5c driver installed, then you may find that the iR C3220 doesn't have the PS option - it may be PCL5c only. The easiest way to tell is to open the printers web page (called RUI) by entering the printers IP address in your browser of choice. With the default page open, select Additional Functions and then Custom Settings (you may be prompted for a system ID & password). If you get past this the new view will show if you have PS as well as PCL. If there is no PS, then you will have to look at installing the latest version of Gutenprint and selecting Generic PCL5c as your 'ppd'.
If the PS option is installed, then the v1.70 driver should be okay, although there is a trick to adding it. In the Printer Setup Utility, after clicking Add, select More Printers and then Canon IP (PS). In the new window input the IP address and a queue name of LP. When you click Add the copier is queried by the driver to determine what model it is, meaning that once it is displayed in the printer list it should show the iR C3220. Given that this didn't happen for you (and if the imagePASS is not being used) then a likely cause can be the disabling of SNMP in the copier setup. You may have to get the IT guys to enable this (or at least explain why it is off).
If you go the other way of manually selecting LPD as the protocol (AppleTalk is not supported by the PS v1.70 driver) then you need to ensure that for the print using you select iR C3220 CanonPS for the ppd. If you see Canon iR C3220, don't use this as it is the wrong ppd for the PS driver - it is there as part of the PPD installer.
If you want to try using the PPD, then you can use AppleTalk but of course this has to be enabled in the copier, and if your the only Mac then it is likely that it is disabled. Again the RUI page can tell you this or you can print a Config page from the copier (I think you go Additional Functions > Report Settings > Network > User Data List).
Hope something above is helpful and if not, please reply back.

  • HP Deskjet 880c print error on Intel iMac

Using OS 10.4.8 built-in HP inkjet 3.3 universal binary driver, DeskJet 880c via USB printing fails on two Intel iMac's. Same printer works okay on 10.3 PowerPC G4 eMac with pre-Intel 2.7 driver. HP Support offered driver refresh procedures which do not resolve problem. Printing is fine with some network laser printers, but not with this supposedly 10.4-approved direct USB inkjet printer. Any successes with the new HP 3.3 inkjet driver?

  • Intel iMac/PowerMac G4--Sharing a Printer

I've been reading a bunch of posts, and just get confused, so hopefully someone can help me out with a simple answer. Have a PowerMac G4 running OS 9.1, with 2 printers connected with a USB hub (HP LaserJet 1320 and a Canon i860); have just added an Intel iMac (OS X 10.4.9) to the office. What do I need to be able to use both printers from either computer? It seems like a router is the answer, but I'm not totally clear on that. It would also be nice to be able to access the internet with both as well (Verizon DSL), but if only the iMac can do that, that's ok. We have an Asante FH305 ethernet hub, so I don't know if that can be used in some way . . . I'd like to do this the simplest way, for the least amount of $$ (doesn't everyone?)
    Thanks.

Let's take a quick breeze through networking 101 for non-majors (grin). Some printers are made to be shared over a network - they have an ethernet interface and are generally called network printers. Other printers, generally known as dedicated printers, are made to be connected to a single computer. Today the preferred interface for these printers is USB. A USB printer cannot be connected to an ethernet hub, only a network printer can.
Recognizing that lots of us have multiple computers but no pressing need for multiple printers, Apple built into its OS the ability to share a dedicated printer with other computers that are on the home network. That's what I recommended to you.
There is a second option that can work for some printers. There's a device called a USB print server. It connects to an ethernet network and, as its name implies, lets you connect USB printers to it. It doesn't work for all printers though. I used to own the same Canon printer you do and I have an Airport Extreme which includes a USB port for printer serving. It worked fine. Whether your laser printer would though, I cannot say.

  • Tiger on iNtel iMac "Printing" over Airport to HP 2100M

Nice new iNtel iMac 2GHz running Airport Extreme can't print via Airport to a networked HP 2100M. The HP has an EIO card and it's connected to the LAN by that cable.
I have an old iMac that's hardwired to an ethernet hub that's being driven by the AEB and the HP 2100M is also connected to that hub.
The old iMac sees the printer and prints just fine.
The new Intel iMac doesn't see the HP over Appletalk and I'm not able to figure out how to setup the new iMac to print via Airport using the IP address of the HP printer.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Here's a 30,000 ft level view of my LAN:
Internet Cloud =>Comcast Cable ISP =>Cable Router
    AEB =>Linksys Ethernet Hub
    •iMac 350MHz (don't laugh. She's still a beauty) OSX 10.2.8
•HP 2100M with Network EIO card
iNtel iMac (sees the Internet just fine via AEB, but can't see the printer for patootie!)
iNtel iMac 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   HP 2100M with EIO network card, AEB LAN,

Unfortunately, that didn't work. I power cycled the cable modem, AEB, router hub, and the printer and the iMac still can't "see" the printer.
I've looked at the Airport discussions and this problem is a larger issue than the iNtel iMacs. It sounds like it's probably an AEB issue.
I'm running the latest firmware to no avail. It almost sounds to me in the Apple literature that they only support USB printing through Airport. This would be a serious blunder as the business world relies more on networked server based laserwriters than USB dot matrix printers.

  • 20" Intel iMac and Samsung Laser Printer

I ordered my new 20" Intel iMac last Saturday, the 14th. From day one, it said estimated ship was Jan. 24th. Yesterday I checked the status and it still said the 24th, but it also said estimated delivery for Jan. 31st. I was sad because when i ordered it, it said estimated ship 3-5 business days. Jan. 24th would be longer than that. So I checked my e-mail this morning, and lo and behold, I have an e-mail from Apple saying my new computer shipped out this morning, making it 5 business days since I ordered it (4 if they considered Monday a holiday). I just wanted to reassure others that the ship date may not be as late as it's estimated.
My question is this... I have a Samsung laser printer (the ML-1740) hooked up to my fiance's Windows XP machine. My Sony Vaio desktop (which I'm giving to my mom) can see the printer just fine. It prints just as if it was hooked up to it. My Powerbook however, cannot see the Samsung printer over the network. I'm a nursing student and print out tons of text only stuff, so I really need to use the laser printer with my new Mac. I've see a lot of different discussions on Mac drivers for this particular model, but I haven't tried any of them on my Powerbook, and I'm curious as to whether or not any of them would even work with the new Intel Mac. My other question is whether or not there is any way I can get my iMac to see the printer on the Windows. I don't necessarily have to install drivers on the Mac if I don't need to. I just need a solution to make it work. If I have to install something, that's fine. If I can just make it print over the network, that's great too. I don't ever use any of the settings the Samsung software provides, so just basic printing is fine. I just don't want to have to e-mail all my documents to myself and then go to the Windows machine to have to print. I apologize if any of this is confusing. What are some of the things I can try to make this work? Or can someone point me in another direction to get the answers. I was stupid in not realizing that the printer didn't support Mac OS X when I bought it, even though I already have one Mac. Thanks so much! I love these forums!

My shipping was the same way, maybe they had a supply shortage of RAM or just a long queue of computers waiting for upgrades and not enough people to perform them. Mine shipped today with an estimate of for the 25th.
I have looked around on Apples site and couldn't find anything about supported printers. You will have to install some form of driver on the Mac. You will have to make sure the PC has it shared correctly. Read about printer sharing in the windows help files. I don't know any more off hand.

  • I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " the picture you are trying to print is in the iphoto library"  what can i do to be able to print a photo from iphoto

I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " unreadable file: the following file could not be imported.  the file is in the iphoto library folder"  also when i try to print a picture from iphoto i get a message that says "no page was selected"
not sure what happened but i can pnly print when i drop the photo onto my desktop as an 8.5 x 11 size picture and i am trying to print 4x6's

Since the new library gives you the same message log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can run iPhoto without getting that message.  If you get that message there also a reinstall of iPhoto seems indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all available updates to it.

  • Printing problems with HP laserJet 1320 and new Intel iMac

My new Intel iMac won't print to my HP 1320 from Eudora or from web browsers. The applications "quit unexpectedly". From Safari, nothing happens.
I can print PDF documents and Office documents with no problems. The Intel is connected to a router via Airport. The printer is connected to the router via Ethernet. My old G4 iMac prints fine (connected to router via Ethernet) as does my G4 laptop (connected via Airport).

    Solution!!!
Just spent 90 minutes with some nice folks in level 1 and level 2 support.
Problem seems to be that I used migration utility to import the soul of my old machine into the new machine. When you do that, you bring along the old print system (PPC vs Intel).
I had upgraded to 10.4.5 after the migration and assumed that it would correct any problem like that, but it had not.
After a great deal of trial and error, the solution was to go to move disk/library/printers to the desktop and restart the system
Then use the the install disk 1 that came with the iMac and use the OPTIONAL INSTALLS package to reinstall the printer drivers.
    Worked like a champ.
Suspect similar problem might happen for any of you with I/O drivers.

  • My iMac is networked to a brother printer with automatic duplexing capability.  It will double-side documents from all sources except from Word.  I can't find anywhere in Word to change the settings.  Any advice?

My iMac is networked to a Brother Printer that is capable of duplex printing.  I can print duplexed documents from every source so far except Word.  Nothing in the pre-print dialogue boxes gives me the choice to double side.  In the same place that I am given the choice to double-side when printing from other sources, Word only offers 'collated'.  Any advice?

Thanks.  It worked!  It sure seems like a complicated way to go about duplexing that takes only one step with every other source but Word, though, doesn't it?  Anyway, that's not your problem and you solved mine.  Much appreciated.

  • Intel iMac + USB Printer

    Hi,
My HP Deskjet 845c Printer no longer works with my new intel iMac.
(previously it did work with Powerbook G4 1.67, also running 10.4.6)
I checked the Apple support document :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303057
for printers supported with intel macs & this printer IS listed as supported.
I've also followed the steps described, including reseting the print manager.
I AM able to print a test page, using the HP Driver utility via Printer Setup Utility.
    This works fine.
However, if I attempt to print anything else (textedit, photoshop, preview) i get a badly garbled printout, letters large or streched & broken up onto several pages.
I'm confused why the test page works fine from Printer Setup, but anything else is junk - Any ideas?

  • Intel iMac/Canon printer problew

I have just upgraded from an old Grape iMac (which I had updated to OS X)to a new intel machine. I have a Canon Pixma printer which worked fine with the old iMac but with the new one it prints everything a quarter size, even when it shows it full size in print preview.
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.1)   Not sure which version of 10.4, but it's a new machine.

I have a CanoScan LiDE50 scanner that isn't even recognized by the Intel-Mac. I get a message that it is not connected, check the cable (but it does work fine on older Macs, I have checked). Canon says to open the driver in Rosetta, but that option does not show up in Get Info.
I went to the SourceForge site and found an updated driver for my old Epson 777i printer. Maybe that site can help you.

  • Intel iMac Postscript printer support

Am considering a new Intel based iMac but have read that not all device drivers in the PPC version of OS X 10.4.4 are supported by the Intel version. Specifically, I have an Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS and an Imation USB SuperDisk that I wish to continue using. I've heard that the necessary PPDs for the LaserWriter are not included with the Intel based systems. Anyone know if they are supported by the Intel iMac or of a documentation from Apple on that subject? Will buy an iMac G5 if the support isn't there for the Intel. Don't want to find out after I open the box.

  • Dual networks, express and extreme problem with Intel iMac accessing both

I have two airport networks setup to two different ISP's. One is setup using two Airport Expresses with a printer hung off one. The other is setup with an Airport Extreme with two USB disks.
I have a G4 iBook 14" laptop and a MacPro 17" Intel laptop that see and can bee switched between both networks utilizing Internet Connect. They are running OS X 10.4.11.
The other system is an Intel iMac 20" (late 2006) running OS X 10.5.1. The only wireless network it sees is the Airport Extreme. This is frustrating because I want to be able to switch to the Express network to print and cannot get the iMac to recognize the network. Before upgrading to 10.5.1, I could, on occasion, see the other network, now I can not.
Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to fix it? I believe it is operating in 802.11n, but have no way to verify this.

I miss posted this in windows. I reposted this in the Airport Extreme.

  • Networking Intel iMac, G4 iMac, & Compaq Laptop?

I networked my Intel 24" iMac (Airport Extreme card), my wife's G4 20" (G4=1.25 mhz; ZDlan AirExtreme USB network adapter), and a Compaq (Windows XP; Motorola notebook adapter card) laptop with an Apple Airport Express base station. I used the installation software that came with the USB AirExtreme adapter card on the G4 iMac, and to my surprise they all worked together just fine for several months. I could get the internet and print from the network printer from any of the three computers. After about two months, I started having problems getting the internet on any of them and called my ISP (Bellsouth). Bellsouth "upgraded" the firmware on the (Westell) DSL modem, fiddled with various settings on both the Intel iMac and the Westell, and finally got it so that the Intel iMac could get the internet. They then announced that they had thus met their obligation to me and said the rest was Apple's problem. I fiddled with the Compaq and got it back online, but the G4 iMac was never able to connect. The signal from the base station was making it to the G4 iMac, but I couldn't get the G4's OS 10.3.9 network settings to recognize the PPPoE server. After installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling the ZDlan software numerous times to no avail, I called Apple tech support, and they tried everything they could think of for nearly two hours without success, and concluded that either the USB modem had stopped working, the ZDlan software had been corrupted, or the OS needed reinstalling on the hard drive. He emailed me the instructions for how to do this without losing any data or programs. I called the eBay store that I bought the USB modem from, and they're sending me another new one (with installation CD) for free, but if the new one doesn't work, it looks like I'm going to have to face reinstalling the OS and praying I don't screw it up.
My question is this: have any of you had success using the ZDlan AirExtreme (it's made in Asia and marketed under different names; it looks like a tiny blue Zippo lighter) with a G4 (1.25mhz; 20") iMac? Is there some other USB network adapter that would work better with an Airport Express base station on this G4 iMac? Does anybody have any alternative suggestions for me?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When I bought my refurbished iMac G4 direct from Apple online,
I also purchased the AppleCare protection plan and a refurbished
AirPort Extreme card for it; at the time, the card retailed for more.
And until September, my computer and the wi-fi card are covered.
    The USB 2.0 iMacG4 models [or, 1GHz G4 processor + USB 1] and later
can use the Extreme card; the specs for the 1.25GHz 17" and 20"
are very similar in most ways other than the size of the display.
Now the price for some parts are lower. I know where I can get an
unused/new Extreme card for free; a friend was sold one by the
Apple Store online for his iMacG4 700MHz computer. Of course
it won't fit and he's too good a person to bother returning it...!
gaelic2, you are welcome to the additional input; a good used
card of the correct type could likely last for years, and it says
