Printing on Letter size paper, Margin issues!

I am working from a Dell Optiplex 755 with Windows XP, Illustrator CS2 and an HP 4345 printer.
The problem is summarized in the below paragraphed points:
We print on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper, with artwork sized for 8.5 x 11 exactly. The artwork contains 4 quarter page images to be cut into flyers, which each have 1/4" margins all the way around them. There is a back side as well, created with the same specifications. We wish to print these flyers duplex from high quality PDF files that we created in Illustrator.
When the print comes out, the right hand margin of the sheet is larger than the top, bottom, and left margins.
The top, bottom, left margins= 0.166"; this doesn't effect the top, bottom, and left sides of the artwork, as the .25" margin we setup on the artwork is greater than the .166" margin of the print area.
However, the right hand margin= 0.306"; this means that the right side of the artwork gets cut off by .056" (.306-.25")
In order to fit all of the artwork on the page, we can either shift the Page Tiling Print Area over slightly, or we can select the print option "Shrink to Fit". However this is a problem because we are printing the two sides as a duplex (printed both sides), and the tiled artwork on the front won't line up what is printed on the back because of the larger right margin. Therefore if the sides don't line up when we go to cut, the information is going to be cut off on the opposite side to the one we are cutting.
The printer setting for 8.5x11" paper "Letter" is what we believe to be creating the offset margin. (We checked the specifications for a Letter print, and the standard margins were identical to the ones we see exhibited in the print outs, 0.166" vs. 0.306")
We understand that there might be a way to set up your own custom print setting through Adobe Acrobat/ Photoshop/ Illustrator for a specfic type of print job, allowing you to control the print margins, but we are not familiar with the process.
Can you think of any other possible causes and/or solutions for the problems that are described?

Thanks for the feedback Karen! I'm not sure that the setup process is pricesly the same in illustrator but I've got some screenshots of how the artwork is setup to give you an idea.
This is the artwork shown with the Rulers included to show the size of the artboard and where the guides are set for the margins I want:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/tcperry/Alanis-Tiled-Artwork-with-g.jpg
This is the artwork shown with the Print Area shown by selecting View>Show Page Tiling:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/tcperry/Alanies-showing-print-area.jpg
So I think that the artwork is correctly setup, however the problem lies in the printing area that seems to be predetermined by the printer setting 'Letter' for 8.5x11" paper (see the dotted line on the second screen shot).
I see what you're talking about when you say 'centered on page' and yes we have Auto-Rotate and Center selected in the Page Handling options when printing from PDF. However it will still just chop off the artwork that comes within .306" of the right side of the page. Is there anyway around this .306" margin that seems to be set by the printer?

  • Officejet Pro 8500A - unable to print on odd-size paper

After a couple of hours of frustration, I have decided that I an unable to print on odd-sized paper on our brand new HP printer!  On an older string in this user forum, one suggestion was to make a paper cut-out from regular sized paper to put on top of an envelope to "fool" the printer into thinking it was using standard sized paper.  I am trying to print odd-sized wedding invitations, and in order to to do this, I wouldn't be able to use the paper guides intended to keep the smaller paper in the middle.
Another suggestion would be to create a "custom size" paper in the printer properties, which doesn't seem to be possible in Windows XP as far as I can see.
    My card-stock paper measures 4 3/4" x 6 7/8"  Neither 5 x 7" nor 4 x 6" will work and I have tried numerous others, such as Janpanese postcard, Index card 4 x 6, etc.
Any suggestions?  This is frustrating enough to look at other namebrand printers next time, but I guess I'm stuck with this one for a while!

    Hello @drlogan0,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you are encountering problems with getting your Officejet pro 8500A onto your new wireless network.
    I would like to help.
i would try restoring the network defaults. This will help erase any 'old' information that may be stuck in the printers memory. I would like to give you specific steps for this, but I am unsure if you have the 8500A, 8500A wireless, or the 8500A premium.
Basically the steps are, go into the network menu, and select restore network defaults.
If you have tried restoring the network defaults already, please review the following troubleshooting documents.

  • Printing on Custom size paper

I just purchased a HP Photosmart 7515 and I am trying to print on a paper 5 x 6.5 inches. I am doing this document in Word and I have the page set up in word correctly, but when I go to print the printer acts as if I have paper that is letter size (8.5 x 11in). When I go into the printer's properties and try to choose the paper size I get a drop down menu of several sizes, but not an option to do a custom size. Is it even possible to print on a custom sized paper or do I need to return the printer? If you know how to do it please let me know. Thank you.

    Hi,
I afraid the printer does not support using a custom paper sizes.
An alternative driver as the C310 is likely to fail as a such is not supported by the firmware.
You may find the printer specification below, as you may see any custom media size paper is not listed as supported within the Paper-handling specifications, I afraid a such is not supported for your printer:

I don't see any page set-up option under the file menu, and I don't see any page scaling option in the print dialogue box.
How do I get it to print to fill a letter-size page?

Keynote basically does pass thru printing based on your current print driver setings. If it is not printing properly it is most likely a setup feature with your printer or driver driver and not within Keynote.

  • Is there a way to split a very large 1 page pdf into letter size multiple page pdf?

I often have very large single page pdfs that need to be printed onto letter size paper.  Usually I don't have access to the printer where I'm working so I have to send the file to someone for printing.
I have AXI pro, they don't.
I want to make sure the job is printed as I specify and most of the users are using Reader.  So I want to give the someone the pdf ready to print sized in legal.  This requires manipulation of the pdf that I don't seem to be able to figure out how to do.
In older versions of Acrobat, I could print to a new pdf and designate the page size.  Acrobat would create the multipage pdf.  The newer versions don't allow this.
With OSX 10.8 & AXI you can't save, export, split a one page (68" x 16") document into multiple page letter size (16 pages) pdf.
Perhaps this can be done by printing to eps and running through distiller again or something else, but I'm stumped at the moment.
Any suggestions of how to attach this would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

That's a tough one. Acrobat is not designed for tiling PDF files to create another PDF. That's really what you're asking. There is the option to PRINT to a PDF, and turn on the Poster feature. If were in Windows where there is a real Adobe PDF printer driver, you could probably use that feature. But for various reasons (too complicated to describe here), that was withdrawn on the Macintosh.
If you have a copy of Adobe InDesign, and if you installed an Adobe PDF 9 PPD file (see description below), it could be done in a somewhat awkward way. InDesign allows you to place PDF files so you would need to make a page of the proper size and place your large PDF:
Then after installing the Adobe PDF 9 PPD file, you could choose File > Print. Then choose to print a PostScript file to the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD file. In the Setup panel, you'd choose a Letter size page. Then you'd choose the Tile option at the bottom and set the Overlap amount:
Then you'd save the PostScript file and process through Distiller.
My blog post below describes how to find and install the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD file:

  • Crystal Report XI Print report on different paper size (A4/Letter)

    Hi,
I have designed report in Crystal XI using paper sieze Letter. Multipler sites are using this application. User in USA are using Letter size paper and User in Euorpe are using A4 size paper. All reports work fine for USA users.
When Eurpoe users print the report on A4 size paper which set in Letter size, the report is truncated from Header or footer. They are printing report from Application and application is set on Citix server.
If Anybody have any idea how to setup Crystal report so it can print on any paper size?
    Thanks
    Bhagvat

    Hi Don,
    Please find the below description.
Background: Crystal Report XI is utilized to develop and view reports with data source from Oracle based LIMS application (Vendor: LabWare). The reports are printed using network printer on US Letter paper for users located in North America and on A4 paper for users located in Europe. The report format is US Letter and designed to print on both paper formats i.e. Letter and A4.
Issue: When reports are printed by users in Europe using A4 format paper the printer defaults to US Letter paper (in printer preferences) resulting to data cut off from top and bottom on the printout.
    1)      When report layout is select to A4 during developing reports using CR, the printing preferences changes to A4 when printed and vice versa for Letter format. How can we avoid CR to enforce from changing printing preferences?
    2)     According to Citrix engineers in the company, the printer drivers installed on Citrix servers have nothing to do with printing preferences and CR defaults to paper size based on report design. What do we tell them about doing different to resolve this issue?
    3)    Even though a printer preference of default printer on local desktop is changed to A4, the report gets printed to Letter format result in data cutoff.  We have tried this option with several HP printers from few different company locations.
    Thanks

  • How to print both letter and legal size docs at same time with two trays

I have an HP Laser Jet P2055dn printer. How can I print both letter and legal docs at same time?

Not quite sure what you mean by "print both letter and legal docs at same time".
If you mean that sometimes you want to print a document on Letter size paper, and at other times you want to print a different document on Legal sized paper, then all that is neccessary is to ensure that:
The printer knows what Paper Size (e.g. Letter or Legal) is present in each tray; on many LaserJet devices, the size is detected automaticaly by sensors in each tray (except for the drop-down tray), but some devices may require that you set the size via front panel menus, or (for network models) via the Embedded Web Server equivalent.
You may also need to specify what Paper Type (e.g. Plain or Letterhead) is present in each tray, in order to distinguish between two or more trays which have the same paper size loaded.
Within your appllcation / print preferences, ensure that you select the required combination of size and type for the document.
But if you mean how do you print a document with some pages on one size of paper, and other pages on a different size, this may only be possible with bespoke applications and/or printer drivers.
