Printing on Windows network

This is my first Mac and I am enjoying it very much!
I was a warehouse automation programmer in a former life so I can handle some tech jargon in an answer. I guess what I am trying to say is it doesn't have to be over simplified for me to get it (I hope.)!!!
I have an iBook G3 500mhz (running OS X 10.3.9) that I want to print from; through an Apple Airport card to a '2Wire' wireless AP/DSL modem, through a Windows XP box, to a Canon Pixma MP160 printer. (Deep Breath, Now)
The rest of the home network (Windows XP or Vista machines) prints to this printer fine. The printer is shared.
I have downloaded and installed the Canon 'driver package' (I don't know the proper term) for this printer.
When I tried to set this printer up I get the printer dialogue along the lines of 'SAMBA unable to connect - Retry in 60 seconds' and the countdown. After that I get a (looks like windows error message but on the mac) message along the lines of 'WINDOWSNT_WORKSTATION_ACCESSDENIED'
I have been unable to find a workable solution. Any Suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your effort,
Chuck

Can the iBook print to the printer when connected direct by USB?
Ensure that the XP PC user account you are using to authenticate has a password.
You may still have issues as the Canon printer drivers for OS X may not work over the network.

Why do I keep getting "Connection failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME" when trying to print on Windows networked printer over wi-fi?

If I run the following (on the machine I'm trying to set up the share)
    smbclient -L localhost -U%
    I got the following output
Connection to localhost failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
so I thought it might be something incorrect with the iptables side of things, however I haven't really touched that at all and it seems to look correct
    iptables -nvL
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 667 packets, 79977 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 157 packets, 20724 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
So from my (very little) knowledge this appears correct (I think)... However it appears that something is blocking access somewhere.

  • Unable to print from MacBookPro to printer in Windows network

    Hi,
I am trying to print from a MacBookPro on an HP printer connected to a desktop computer running Windows Vista.
    MacBookPro  - running Mac OS X 10.7.5; 2 GHz Intel Core 7; 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Windows desktop computer - Acer Aspire M1100 running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit; 2.1 GHz AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core
Printer - HP Deskjet F2210 All-in-one (printer, scanner), connected to Windows Desktop via USB (direct, not hub)
Wired/Wireless environment - Motorola SBG900 Cable Modem, to which the Windows Desktop is connected either wirelessly or via Ethernet cable
The printer will print documents when connected directly to MacBookPro via USB, but over the network, this is showing:
On MacBookPro: In the printer queue, the message shows, "Waiting for print job to complete..."
On the Windows Desktop: In the printer queue, the size of the document comes up as ...KB/...KB (in my case, 10.7 KB/13.8 KB) - won't change, number of pages "N/A"
On the printer front panel: blinking On/Off button light (blinking slowly, suggesting printer is still busy) - the printer will start to kick into action, but the only thing happening is that blinking light...
... and that's it! From there, there is no more progress (even after 10-20 minutes); you have to cancel the print job on both the MacBookPro and the Windows Desktop.
This is what I have tried already:
Making sure both machines are in the same network (check)
Making sure both are in the same subnet (check)
Deactivating Windows firewall and the firewall in the router/gateway (does not solve issue)
Logging in to Windows Desktop over Finder on the Mac using a user name that is the same on both machines (does not solve issue)
Deleting Keychain Access stored passwords in case they were incorrect (does not solve issue)
Making sure drivers for printer are up-to-date on both MacBookPro and Windows Desktop (check)
Deleting the printer from the MacBookPro and letting the system find it by itself when printer  connected directly via USB (does not solve issue)
I have also tried installing the printer as described in Apple Support article HT3049 (How to manually add a Windows shared printer.) It seems like there are two ways to add a printer, one is by using the "Windows" button in the "Add printer" window toolbar, the other is by using the "Advanced" button. Both did not help.
I exchanged the printer cartridges, since low ink levels apparently can also cause errors when printing in a network (read that somewhere here - but does not solve issue either.)
In order to see if the Windows version has something to do with it, I connected a Windows 7 laptop to the printer and tried to print from the MacBook wirelessly to it (no success there, either).
When printing first when we got the MacBookPro, I think it worked to print over the network, but for whatever reason, things won't budge at the moment. (I guess, it's a driver issue, but the drivers are up-to-date.) I must be doing something wrong, I just don't seem to be able to figure out what, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Can no longer find Printer on Windows network

I had a connection to the HP LaserJet 4050 at work and accidentally deleted it. We have a Windows network. I remember using the Windows Printing option before, but the printer no longer shows up when I select Network Neighborhood. The only thing that shows up is workgroup. Here is what I remember doing before:
    - Bring up Print & Fax in System Preferences
    - Click + to add a printer
    - Select Default Browser
    - Click More Printers
    - Select Windows Printing from the top pop-up menu
    - Change Workgroup to Network Neighborhood in the pop-up
Someone else has tried this with his Mac here at work, and the above steps worked. He has a Mac Book Pro 17". I am running a Powerbook G4 15". If it matters, I set up the printer on my system back when I was running Panther; this is the first time I have tried adding the printer while I've had Tiger.
The only thing I have gotten to work is the hint on MacOSXHints (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051204134420783). While this did work, I do not want to have my network password in my printer preferences (or wherever they are kept).
    Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes, this could have happened after any number of updates, since I'm almost positive that I added the printer under Panther. This first came to light with OS X 10.4.6. I do not know when I first saved the printer, but I know it was prior to Tiger. Actually, now that I think about it, it may have been a different computer, too. Where my older computer was Panther and my new computer is Tiger. I do not remember exactly how I dragged over my user folder from the backup. I may have updated it to Tiger before copying it over to the new system. Of course, if the printer does not come over with my user prefs, then I must have set it up under Tiger.
I cannot say for sure if the IP address of the printer has changed or not. However, connecting it to the other Mac worked. At the time, we both had 10.4.6, although his is Intel and mine is PowerPC.
The name of the printer has not changed nor the location. The name consists of two letters and underscore and two more letters (e.g. ab_cd).
I have tried having a connection to the server where the printer is located and trying to add the printer while it is connected. I was hoping that, with a connection, the software might be able to find the server.

  • Macbook Pro not printing to Windows network printer

    Hello,
Recently purchased Macbook Pro Mac OS 10.7.2 Lion and I am unable to print to a windows network printer.
When I click the print button nothing happens. I have tried to print from Safari, Word, Excel etc and nothing happens.
The printer is added and showing as idle. ( I am able to print to the printer from my own Windows 7 PC).
I have reset the printer settings and re-added but the issue remains.
Both the printer and Macbook are connected to the network.
    Has anyone any suggestions please?.
    Thanks,
    Frank

. are you using the right driver? try checking with HP if they have a driver that is compatible with lion.

  • Wireless printing to Sharp printer via windows network

I finally convinced my mother to buy a Macbook Pro, and most things have been great. Except this: she can't print at her office, mega issue!
I don't know anything about the network or really about the printer. Her office manager had to type the MBPs IP address into the firewall before we could connect to the wireless network, and now the internet works fine. But we can't figure out the printing situation. When we add printer (under the IP option) we type in the IP of the printer, the MBP finds the printer, and it says the printer is idle. It knows the model number (Sharp AR-M550) and even knows the toner levels. However, when we go to print, nothing happens. We've tried the IPP, LPD, and Jetsocket options. Nothing works.
It is an old printer, but it does have Mac Drivers (we have downloaded the latest 10.6 driver for it) No one at her office knows what to do, this is the first mac ever in that building. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
There could be a couple of causes for the Mac to fail with printing.
    1. The printer does not support Postscript. For a number of office printers, the Postscript kit is an option. If you are trying to print to it with a Postscript driver (the Mac driver you downloaded for 10.6) but the device only supports PCL or a Sharp proprietary language, then you will not get any output.
Since there are Windows PCs printing to the copier I suggest you get one of them to do a Windows test print. This will confirm the IP address of the printer and show which printer driver language they are using. As I mentioned, it may be a Sharp proprietary language, which could be a problem as these languages usually only have a driver for Windows - not for Mac.
If they are using PCL then you can open System Preferences > Print & Fax, select the Sharp printer queue and open Options & Supplies. Under the driver tab you can select the print driver. If you change this from what it is currently using to Generic PCL Laser Printer, this will let her print but there is no finishing function (like stapling) but at least it supports duplex (two-sided) printing. Note also that the Generic PCL does not support color, it only prints in b&w.
With regards to the IP protocol, HP Jetdirect-Socket would be the best option. IPP is not always enabled and LPD can require a particular queue name.
    2. If the printer does support Postscript then some office printers also have a job control function. This is often used to restrict color printing and when enabled, it can stop the Mac from printing. If the device is a copier and users need to enter and ID/Password to perform color copying then this would indicate it has this function.
You can often check the setup of the printer by entering its IP address into a web browser. This will open its internal web page which shows details about the device, such as the printer languages supported, protocols enabled and if this job control is enabled.
If the device does have some form of job control enabled then there is often a setting within the driver that lets you enter the appropriate details. Sometimes you can see this via the Driver tab mentioned above. If there is no setting there then you can check the driver menus when you select to print.
Anyway, that's about all I can suggest you check. The fact that you can get toner levels indicates that there is a path between the Mac and the printer, so at least you know it is not network related, unless the printer ports are being blocked but I don't think this is likely - especially so if the Windows users are connecting via the same wireless network.
See how you go with this information and reply if you need more help.

  • Printing from a Mac with OS X Mavericks to a printer on Windows Network

I am having trouble printing to a espon WP4530 that is connected via USB to a windows PC running XP on a wireless network
I see the printer - to add it over the wireless network (Add Printer - under the windows tab), but nothing prints when I select it.
I did connect the printer directly to the MAC and downloaded all the epson drivers and was able to print ok.
But when I go back to the network it does not print.

This solution worked for me using a samsung 1640 printer on a XP computer networked.
    In Windows XP Pro:
    1. Add some Windows components that are not added by default.
              Start Control Panel
              Select Add or Remove Programs
              Select Add/Remove Windows Components
Check Other Network File and Print Services
                        - may require access to XP Pro Install CD (need lpdsvc.dll file)
    2. Verify installation of additional components
Start Services and find TCP/IP Print Server
                        - make sure it is started, then right click and select Properties
                        - change Startup type: from Manual to Automatic
                        - while in Services, make sure IPSEC, Print Spooler, and RPC are started with Startup Type of Automatic (these are dependencies)
    3. Configure Firewall (necessary)
Go back to Control Panel and select Network and Internet Connections
              Select Windows Firewall
Click Exceptions Tab and check File and Print Sharing if not checked
Click Add Port... (most likely LPD port is not in your exception)
                        - Enter the following...
                        - Name: Line Printer Daemon
                        - Port Number: 515
                        - Leave TCP selected then press OK
                        - You can optionally click on scope and select My Network (subnet) only
Windows XP shared printer should now be ready for LPD.

  • Cannon C2880i shared printer on windows network

    Hi gang,
I'm a total rookie with apple. I have logged on to our network at work without a problem. I don't know how to connect to our fancy all-in-one which is so critical to my productivity. It's a Cannon C2880i. Can somebody point me in the right direction. I can't even find it to connect properly.
    Thanks

The adding of the Canon iR network printer is a two step process. First you need to add the driver software to your Mac and then you need to create a printer queue to connect to it.
The iRC2880 has two driver options for Mac OS X, the Canon PS driver v2.11 or UFR2 driver v1.70. You can download either driver from most Canon web sites. With the driver downloaded, once you have unpacked the file, as it is often compressed, you can run the Installer to add the necessary files to your Mac.
Once the installer has completed, you can add a printer queue to the copier. Since the machine typically doesn't advertise itself on the network, you will need to know its ip address. There are a number of ways you can do this, but probably the easiest is to check one of the other computers that is printing to it. Better still, if they are using Windows, get them to print a test page which will show the ip address.
Once you know the ip address, you can create the printer queue.
    1. Open System Preferences then Print & Fax.
    2. If you installed the PS v2.11 driver, click the + button and select IP.
    3. Change the menu to HP Jetdirect.
    4. Enter the ip address of the iRC2880.
    5. You will notice the name shows the same ip address, so if you want to change the name to something more meaningful, like Color Printer, then you can. You can also enter a location, but this is just for your reference.
    6. In the Print Using menu, change the menu to 'select a driver to use' and in the search window, type 2880. This should show you 'Canon iR C2880/3380 PS (UK)'. Select this.
    7. Click Add to complete the installation
    8. With the PS v2.11 driver you may be asked about selecting Unidirectional or Bidirectional for the communication. Select Bidirectional as it gives you more features.
    9. Once the printer queue is created, you can try printing to it.
Note that if you use the UFR2 driver instead of the PS driver, the steps to create the printer queue are different.
    1. Click the + button to add the printer queue
    2. Click More Printers
    3. Change the menu to Canon IP (UFR2)
    4. Enter the IP address of the iRC2880
    5. Enter a queue name of LP
    6. Click Add.
The driver talks to the printer to select the appropriate model from its list. So you should see the iRC2880 in your printers list if everything works as it should.

  • Printing over Windows Network

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me with this.
I'm at University, trying to connect my MacBook to a printer, but my Uni doesn't support Macs. I've got the instructions for connecting to the address in command prompt in Windows.
Does anyone know of a way to do a similar thing in the Terminal or something?
    Thanks.
    MacBook 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Sexy

if everything (samba) is configured correctly, the printer should just show up on the network and can be added from the control panel->add printers wizard.  you will probably have to install the printer drivers on the client (your kids) computers, which if you don't have the disk are normally available from the manufacturers website.

  • Print to windows networked printer

I am somewhat new to Mac and wondered if someone might be able to help out.
At work, I am trying to connect to a network printer/copier on a windows machine. I can locate the printer fine, but whenever I try to print to it, it simply prints 7-8 pages of random characters or code with some blank pages mixed into it. Is this a driver issue? The printer/copier is a Konica Minolta 7145. The printer selection now says "General postscript printer." Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Are you using Bonjour on the Mac and the PC?
    That should fix it.

  • Network Printing to Windows Computer

I'm a new mac user and have a Mac Mini connected through my home's wireless network. All the other machines are Windows XP. I have a HP Deskjet 990 that is connected by USB to the Dell Desktop and it is a shared printer over the network and I can print to it from my other Dell laptop which is connected over the wireless network. Although my Mac is on the network, and it's files, etc., can be seen and accessed by the Desktop, I can't print anything to the networked HP printer. I installed it on the Mac as a networked machine, and couldn't find the 990 drive so used the Gimp HP Deskjet 900 series driver. When I try to print, it tries to do it but nothing happens and the file just stays in the unprinted list. Your help is appreciated.

  • Printing to shared windows printer over wireless network

    Hi,
I just bought my wife a MacBook and recently updated it to Leopard (OS X 10.5). I have a Lexmark X5150 printer connected to a desktop PC running Windows XP. I can share files between the two computers no problem either wirelessly or through an ethernet connection through my router. But, I'm having troubles accessing the shared printer through the Macbook wirelessly. If I connect the printer directly to the Macbook, I can add the printer with appropriate drivers no problem. However, when I try to add the printer as Windows shared printer, the appropriate driver doesn't show up in the drop down list. I can navigate to and find the printer over the network fine, but I just can't find the right driver. I'm a newbie to Mac and was wondering if there is anyway to find the driver using Finder or something similar to determine where it physially resides on the Mac. I know it's there because it is automatically selected when I directly connect the printer to the Macbook and add the printer. Any thoughts??

Couldn't figure things out, so I'll just stick with connecting the printer directly to the macbook.

  • Can't print to a windows networked Gestetner printer

I can not print to a printer on a Windows server. I am connected to the server and can see other printers on Appletalk and Bonjour.
I can see the Gestetner Dsc535 multifunction printer unders "Windows Printing" in the printer set up utility.
I get as far as setting it up and selecting the driver I downloaded for the Gestetner Dsc535 but when I print all that comes out are pages of what looks like a Hex Dump?
I seem to be able to send some sort of data to the printer but it isn't printing.
I am connected to the network through my Airport Express and can print to the HP printers in the office network by IP, Appletalk and Bonjour.
I have read on the Gestetner web page that a Fiery set up might be needed. Can i use the Fiery driver that came with the OS?
At a complete loss here as is the Admin personal (all windows I a the only Macintosh)
    Help.
    Macbook-Intel 2 Ghz 1gig RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What you call hex dump is likely postscript code. The printer has an optional postscript card - maybe you don't have that card. Manufacturers assume Mac users will buy the add-in card, so the driver downloads are always for the postscript version.
The printer is also HP-compatible (uses HPs PCL page language). You should be able to print using the generic driver "HP Laserjet 6 Series Gimp-Print," included in OS X.

  • Networking color laserjet 3800 printer with Windows 7 OS

I have a color laserjet 3800 that is networked in an office of 5 computers using Windows XP pro OS.  I just purchased a HP pavilion Slimline Windows 7 64 bit OS computer.  The networking and printer networking set up was a breeze until it came to connecting the 3800.  I have downloaded the PCL 5, 6 and universal drivers.  When I go to add printer as a network printer and choose the 3800 it gives an error of not being able to find a driver.  I tried to manually find the driver but it does not find a match in PCL 5, 6 or universal driver.  The link below clearly shows the 3800 to be compatible with windows 7, but I cannot get it work.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=HP%20Col...
The network absolutely sees the printer and lets it be chosen but does not let it get installed on the windows 7 machine.
    Thank you for any assistance.

Same Problem here. Does no one have a solution?
