Printing out French characters

Hi to everyone. I'm trying to make a small application that will help me learn french verbes. I have the verbes in a file (written with notepad on windows) and I want to print them usign System.out.println(); The problem is I'm in Greece, so my locale is set to greek. I've no trouble printing greek. I've tried changing the locale with
Locale.setDefault(new Locale("fr", "FR"); but still French characters come out wrong (Copyright characters, question marks etc.) Can someone enlighten me? Thanks

don't use System.out.println(), perhaps write to a JTextArea. The problem is your console/terminal/dos

I cant print out Chinese Characters

My ibook won't print out Chinese characters at my local 711 here in Taipei? (A Chinese speaking city, needless to say). Its not an issue of Traditional versus Simplified characters and the files are downloaded language transcripts from a learning site I belong to.
And there is no problem printing out Japanese Kanji which are simply Chinese characters adopted into Japanese.
Any suggestions on what is wrong here. The learning site doesn't seem to have any idea beyond saving it as a pdf file and trying again. This hasn't worked.

Yes, the printer is in a 711. Totally generic - Kyocera, every 711 has the same. I connect via usb cable and yes, the documents do display correctly on screen. The application being used is Apples own, I believe, but I have tried Adobe - with no luck.

The following two suggestions are from the technical help forum of my language learning site:
1.In your printer options, do you have anything that says "print truetypes as bitmaps" or something like that? That should solve it.
2. You are talking about printing the pdf's right? If this is the case it is simply a matter of your printshop not having the necessary fontfiles installed. A possible work around is to select all the text in the PDF. Copy+Paste this into word using a widely distributed unicode font like Arial. Then try to print these .doc files at your printshop. If you copy+past the stuff, it will give you a possibility to leave out the traditional or simplified (whatever) you don't need + possibly some titles and logo's and thereby reducing the overall number of pages. Which is a good thing if you are charged by the page.

PDF file will not print out Special Characters

I am currently a technician for a college and, and the customer that I am attending currently has the following Problem:
I am using Adobe PRO 9 to convert my Word files to pdfs for [a New York Printing Company].... The Greek letters used in Word are seen in Word, are seen in PDF, but do not come out in ...[the New York Printing Companies'] printing.
What could be the stubling block for the NY printing company to not be able to print out the Special Characters in the PDF files? I clearly cannot go to the company myself and tell them to change their printer settings or something like that.

Thank you, I have checked the font and I see all the fonts I need already installed. I am not sure if this will solve the problem, and there is a chance that the Adobe Acrobat settings on my customers PC need to be adjusted like you said.
At least I can start looking somewhere .

How do I print out the Characters and the Pitch when the File menu is EMPTY in Adobe Story CC plus?

In Adobe Story CC plus I am unable to print anything since the File menu is empty (doesn't pull down). I am using the latest version on an iMac 27" i7 computer.

To print out an email, first click on the email from the inbox. Now that you're looking at the email viewing pane, you can click "More" > "Print" (as seen in first image below). It will print the email.
To find the sender's address, click on the sender's name (as seen in second image). A menu containing the address and other options to take will pop up. Mousing over the sender's name also shows the address.

Printing French characters on HP 4600

I have no problems printing English characters on HP 4600 printers from my UNIX computer where I define my primary symbol set in my printer profiles as follows:
^1b^28^38^55 for Roman 8 symbol set
and
^1b^28^31^34^4a for Ventura US
What do I need to set up in my primary symbol set to permit the printing of French characters? Right now I'm getting a question mark instead of the actual French character printed off on my HP 4600 printer.

tzw - I responded about this on another forum. I talked to technical support at Adobe about this exact issue about 2 months ago - can't print photoshop CS3 on any of my three HP printers. ( I have a HP1200, an HP 2550 and a HP photosmart 7660) (CS2 works fine) They worked with me for about an hour - called me back and worked some more, and then decided to send it up to the programmers (or engineers or whatever) The programmers called me and worked with me for another hour - trying different set-ups etc., but the conclusion by them was that this was a huge problem in that there were a lot of HP printers out there - that they were going to give this their top priority - and that there would be a fix for this soon. (I have yet to see a fix.)

Hi Experts!!
I have created a smartform and print program which should actually print some Thai characters and English characters too. I created a smartstyle and have some 10 paragraph formats and are all have THANGSAN font. So, I am printing all the thai and english characters in THANGSAN font only.
When print preview is seen, the output is very fine, but when being printed, the thai characters are appearing fine but the english characters' font is being changed to somehting else (courier or arial). Why is this happening so? Because of this, all the output is being merged and looking very weird.
The smartform is created in EN and is translated to all languages. All user has logged on to SAP in EN language.
Can somebody please help me out with whether the problem is with THANGSAN or the printer?
P.S. The smartform is actually similar to the standard script Z_RVINVOICE01 in which only THANGSAN is used.

French characters

Now I have an application which has both french and english characters.Can some one tell me what setting I must have in my browser,my windows 2000 machine and my developing environment JDeveloper.
The reason why I am asking it is I am having problem displaying some characters in my browser,JDeveloper debugging window etc,even though the data exist in the database.In short when I say

The select statements finds the french characters,if condition finds the french characters but when I print it in JSP it gives some junk ? characters.In short, the database has the french characters in it ,even the variable s has french characters in it but when it comes to display in browser or in a window (while de-bugging in Jdeveloper) it shows junk character.Surprisingly there are only few selected french characters(1 %) having that problem.I mean only 3 or four french characters are having problem in display,other french characters(99% of it) can be displayed properly.Now I cant go on finding out which characters are having problem and go on converting them to its decimal equivalent.It looks like my Windows 2000 machine needs some setting.But I am wondering what

I don't think it is anything to do with your browser or machine settings. I had a similar problem. I had an application where the user would upload content to another site in a Microsoft Word document. The JSP page would display the '?' character for MS Word specific characters (like smart quotes etc)
The basic issue is that when you are using JSP pages to display stuff, you are relying on the Java String object and it ends up using the default character set. So you need to read it into a string using the characterset you want, and then display it using the characterset you want.
For example, I used the code below in my JSP. I read from a file. You may have to customize it for your requirements.

How do i print out the keyboard viewer?

I use different languages and need to use the different special characters so am switching among different keyboard layouts frequently. I use the (on-screen) "Keyboard Viewer", but would like to print out the "Keyboard Viewer" for each language that I frequently use. I can't see how to do this other than with e.g. screen capture which is less than ideal. Does anybody know where there are e.g. images of each keyboard layout (including special characters you get by hitting "shift" etc.)?

Problems with French Characters in Page Title

Here is the problem
When using Duplicate Page and trying to set page titles with french characters (or other non standard characters for that matter such as qoutes) The resulting output does not display correctly.
I thought a work around would be to us the HTML escape codes in the title dialog when creating the page however it appears that Incontext then goes and attemps to escape the ampersand part of the escape code during save.
so for instance when trying to set a page title such as Whistler Live! prépare la scène using the following escaped version
Whistler Live! prépare la scène
The resulting HTML saved from incontext looks like this
Whistler Live! pr&eacute;pare la sc&egrave;ne
and the title does not display correctly.
Incontext sees the & which is page of the HTML escape code and they automatically replaces that with &

I am able to enter the characters in the dialog box but during the save they are altered
I created a basic test page with nothing but the following code

saved it as test-characters.cfm (coldfusion page) and tested it out
problem was still there however when I save the page as a .html file and test it out the problem is no longer present
So the problem seems to only occur when using .cfm pages (even if there is no cf code on them)

I have a development that needs to output in Smartform a combination of Chinese and English characters, on an English Logon,
When I debug the form, the Chinese characters are shown in the debug screen, but when it is previewed or printed, it shows garbage. Can anyone help me with this?

Solution
When using SAPscript or SmartForms to print (or email or fax) a form from a business application, many factors influence the outcome of the actual text within the form. All these factors must be checked in order to ensure a correct printout:
1) The language version of the form used to produce the printout.
Example: If you want to print a French invoice, you need to have a FR version of your SAPscript or SmartForms invoice form RVINVOICE01. And the application program must specify the corresponding language key (FR) when calling the SAPscript or SmartForms API.
2) The font selections specified in the form (possibly also in a SAPscript style or SmartStyle used in a form).
Example: In a SAPscript form or a SmartStyle you need to specify HELVE if you want to print German text in Helvetica (or similar) font. If you want to print Japanese text, HELVE is not a valid choice but you need to specify a Japanese font like JPMINCHO in your Japanese form.
3) The output character set of the device type
Every printer in transaction SPAD has a "device type" assigned. Device types used by the spooler for printing support only one single specific output character set. All text from the form has to be converted (using SAP's built-in character conversion mechanism) to this output character set.
A character set can typically support either a single language (e.g. Shift-JIS which supports only Japanese) or a set of languages (e.g. ISO 8859-1, which supports Western-European languages). It is possible that a given language (such as German) can be supported by several output character sets, e.g. you may use either ISO 8895-1 (Latin-1) or ISO 8859-2 (Latin-2) to represent German text. This is so because both character sets contain the special characters used in German.
Example: HPLJ4000 is a HP LaserJet device type supporting the ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1) character set. ISO 8859-1 can be used to represent e.g. Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish but NOT Russian or Japanese.
As a consequence, it is ok to use HPLJ4000 to print English, German French etc. but not for Japanese or Russian.
4) The set of available printer fonts for a given device type
When formatting a document, SAPscript and SmartForms perform an automatic mapping of the font definitions in the form (e.g. "HELVE 14 point bold") and the available printer fonts of the device type. A replacement printer font is chosen, should the specified font selection not be available in the device type. Now this replacement can be problematic if a language-specific font, such as Chinese CNSONG, is specified in a form and it gets replaced by a font which does not support this language, e.g. COURIER.
To solve this problem, font families in SE73 have language attribute assigned, e.g. some fonts are characterized as being suitable only for certain languages. And when a replacement has to be chosen because the original font from the form is not available in the device type, a replacement font is chosen which has the same language attributes.
If no fonts for the language in question exist in the device type, the resulting font will not be able to print the special characters and you will see "wrong" output characters in the printout.
Note on SAPscript/SmartForms Print Preview:
The OTF Print Preview available in Windows GUI (e.g. from transaction SP01) will sometimes not show the "wrong" characters which appear on the final printout. Here is the reason: since the Print Preview runs in Windows environment, it will use Windows fonts to represent the actual printer fonts. A Windows font typically has more available characters (i.e. covers more character sets) than are actually available in a printer's resident font.
A typical example where the Print Preview will differ from the printout is here: if you have a Chinese PCL5 printer such as CNHPLJ4 and use the Western Latin font COURIER in your document, the print preview will show you Chinese characters if you (by accident) tried to format Chinese characters in COURIER font. This is because Windows will automatically choose a font that can output Chinese characters (which is actually not Courier). But when you print the job on an actual PCL5 printer with resident Western and Chinese fonts, the Courier font will not print any Chinese characters but Western special characters instead, because the printer's resident Courier font does not include Chinese characters.
Rule of thumb: all Asian device types (e.g. CNHPLJ4, JPHPLJ4, JPPOST, KPHPLJ4) support not only Asian fonts but also COURIER, HELVE and TIMES fonts. But these Latin fonts can only be used to print English text, not Chinese/Japanese/Korean characters.

Verify your output by examining the OTF data
When analysing printing problems of this type, be sure to check the OTF data which gets produced by SAPscript or SmartForms. OTF or "Output Text Format" is the intermediate page-description format generated from SAPscript or SmartForms. OTF will contain the final printer font names and character set/language identifiers which help to solve the problem. OTF will even name the form and the language of the form used to create the output.
The easiest way to do this is to create a spool request from your application, run transaction SP01, use menu
Goto->Display Requests->Settings
and choose
Display Mode: Raw
Now display your spool request. If this is a SAPscript or SmartForms spool request, you will see OTF data. Each line represents one OTF command, every command starts with a 2-character cmd identifier and possibly some cmd parameters follow.

The CP (CodePage) cmd shows the SAP system codepage used to code the text and the active language. In our case it is codepage 1100 and language E = EN = English.

Finally, the FC-cmd (Font Call) lists a printer font selected within SmartForms. Please note that every SmartForm has a designated default SmartStyle under "Form Attributes->Output Options". In addition, every text node can have a SmartStyle attached (which will override the definitions from the default style for the text). In our case the resulting printer font that was selected is HELVE 12.0 pt bold-off, italic-off.

Java PrintService printing Chinese/Japanese characters output is garbled.

I have been spending the whole day trying to make our text printing application able to print non-western Characters (e.g. Chinese and Japanese) as part of our requirements. But I am constantly getting garbled output when I print a UTF-8 formatted text file containing Chinese characters. I've been trying to switch the DocFlavor types (e.g. byte array in UTF 8, input stream auto sense, UT8-8, etc) but I couldn't simply make it work.

This could be of different reeasons...
1) Make sure your printer is uni-code enabled.
2) Make sure, your unicode enabled printer is configured in SAP.
3) make sure, your printer device is supported by SAP. (You can find list of SAP recommended printers in www.service.sap.com)
4) Check whether the correct device type is used for printing chinese and japanese characters.
5) Check code pages.
6) Make sure you use Cyrillic font family, for printing chinese and Japanese characters.

Missing fonts on print out

Hey
Can someone confirm if it is possible to print the following characters or is it a case that Designer\Server can not handle these correctly. I have the font cartridge and symbolsets set up correctly. Even if you try copy them into a text box in designer it tries to substitute them so that is what raised the question if they can be handled correctly.

1 Have the fonts been embedded when the pdf was made?
2. Fontexplorer caused too many problems when I upgraded to 10.5.2 with quark 7.0 so I had to disgard it.
3. Are you printing through a postscript printer? or not.
I have some fonts that will print through a kinolta minolta fine but come out as you described when put through a OKi 5600.
Can you highlight all your text in reader 8>0 and convert to outlines. It might tell you fonts not embedded, not sure if you can do this with reader as I use Professional with pitstop.

French characters come and go

Hi,
I have an app that sends out email messages in French and English, however it seems that at certain times of the day. The French characters are not recognized and come out as a "?". This only happens periodically and I can't find a pattern to it really. One hour is works, then several hours later it doesn't. We upgraded our email server recently and my guess would be that it's related to that because it started happening around the same time. I don't know what the procedure would be to begin to resolve this. Is it an email server config issue, or a programming issue.

Where coming from the difference between each message ?
In Java, a simple Strings contain (16 bit) Unicode characters.
You need to encode french accent by the unicode escape sequences for chars, example : "\u00XX"
Other solution is to use file properties for french text in your mail application, object Properties is "mail-safe".
Javamail pick the good transfer encoding for you...

Adobe documents print out in Martian

We have Adobe Acrobate 8.0. When we print out a document to our Canon MP620 the English comes out in unintelligible characters and symbols. So far we have rebooted and called Canon (who said to call Adobe).
Any solutions?

Print as Image is a good work around. You can try updating to the latest version of Acrobat 8. What OS are you running?
