Printing Press Simulation with Acrobat X

I created a CMYK file for press in InDesign CS6 (Mac OSX 10.8.5). I exported from ID to PDF using PDF/X-4. The output intent is Coated_GRACoL 2006 (ISO 12647-2:2004). The file checks out great in ID and Acrobat preflight and all is as it should be.
I wanted to print a hard copy press simulation on my Epson 3880 (custom RGB profiles, no RIP). I set up Acrobat Output Preview with the above profile, Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Overprinting. I left the Output Preview window open. Then I printed it from Acrobat X Pro (v10.1.12). I selected Advanced > Color Management with the following settings:
Acrobat Color Management
Chose my custom RGB Inkjet profile
I checked Apply Output Preview Settings
Then I printed the file. There are pure white elements in this design, and using a loupe, it is clear that no dots were laid down to simulate the paper color. It also appears that the print is darker than it should be, so I don't think it is simulating press blacks, but the deeper blacks I can achieve on my inkjet with a semigloss RC paper. I printed the same file from InDesign and it properly lays down dots in the pure white components and prints a less dense black. BTW, I chose to leave the Output Preview dialog box open in Acrobat, because a previous print from Acrobat also gave me pure whites. I thought perhaps you need to keep that dialog box open to retain the simulation settings, but open or closed, I got the same results.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is. Or, is Acrobat not working properly for printing press simulations?
Thanks,
Lou

I'll answer my own question. I think Acrobat is broken and doesn't print accurate press simulations even if you check "Apply output preview settings". At least that is the case with an RGB printer through the driver. I've tried a lot of different options, but none of them worked. I even converted the color to the output intent in Acrobat (as an experiment) and them printed. No dice.
Both InDesign and Photoshop print press simulations properly, but Acrobat X Pro does not.
I just wanted to post this in case somebody else has a similar problem. If somebody finds that I am mistaken, please let me know and post the correct steps or settings to get an accurate Press Simulation on an inkjet from Acrobat.

  • Can't print to pdf with Acrobat 7.1.0 in Vista

I am unable to print to pdf with Acrobat 7.1.0 in Windows Vista.  I used to be able to, now all of a sudden that functionality is gone.  I haven't knowingly done any upgrades since the last time I successfully printed to pdf, but I do have autoupdates enabled, so I can't say what Microsoft may have been up to recently.  When printing to pdf from Internet Explorer 7, the window simply closes.  A printer icon shows up in the system tray but registers 0 print jobs and soon disappears.  When printing to pdf from Word (2003), Word crashes with a series of message boxes saying something about attempting recovery.  Any suggestions?

AcroTray is running.  Thanks for asking that question, as this is one thing that I have disabled on computers running XP, since disabling it in XP doesn't adversely affect my limited use of Acrobat in any way.  I have not disabled it with Vista.  I tried printing to file, and that also caused the window to close.  I happened to have a second IE7 window open when attempting to print to file, and it did not close, so it only affects the active window.  I don't know if that helps at all; when a program crashes, I typically observe it take with it all open windows associated with that program, so the fact that this is only closing the active window seems potentially useful to me in my ignorance of what is the root cause.

  • After clean install cannot print to pdf with Acrobat 8 Pro

I recently had to do a clean install on my desktop computer.  Is there some way I can print to pdf with my Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro, which was working fine prior to the clean install.  I am aware Adobe no longer supports this version, but isn’t this program able to function without being updated?  Want to print pdf files from websites and Microsoft office.  Am running Windows 7 Ultimate OS.

    Hi jadbe,
Windows 7 is not a tested platform for Acrobat 8.

  • Getting errors printing to PDF with Acrobat 8 in Leopard

I get the following error when trying to print to PDF in Acrobat 8 under 10.5:
    "No %%BoundingBox: comment in header"
What does this mean and how do I fix it?
I have updated to 10.5.4 and Acrobat 8.1.2 with the same results. The error remains the same in the PDF print queue, though the job actually disappears now that I upgraded Acrobat. The jobs remained in the queue before, they simply stopped the queue but remained.

When do you get the error, exactly? This doesn't sound like an Acrobat
error. Are there any clues (like a title bar, something active in the
doc) what is putting out the message?

  • Printing fill patterns with Acrobat 8 pro & reader

When I export a freehand 8 or 11 drawing with colored fill
patterns to pdf using export or distiller, it looks correct in
Acrobat 8 professional and reader, but it doesn't print the fill
patterns in color. They come out black & white. I don't wan to
use a PS printer since most of the people I sned the pdfs to don't
have postscript. This didn't happen with earlier versions of
Acrobat. Any ideas to fix this problem?

It would either be Acrobat or Reader, not Acrobat Reader (that went about after AA 5). Reader XI can be run with AA 8, but you may periodically have to tell it which to open a PDF with. Using both can mix up the OS as to which it should use. That is the main problem I am aware of. If you meant Acrobat XI, then there may be an issue with the print drivers. You may have to play some file name changes and such for Acrobat 8 before you install Acrobat XI if that is the case, but the name changes may cause other issues based on how you are using the software. If it is AA XI, I would check to be sure that this version is not compatible with your CAD before trying the 2 version route.

  • Cannot print to pdf with Acrobat 8

I have just gotten a new laptop and moved my CS2 over to it. Everything works fine except I cannot print to a pdf like I used to. I can save as a pdf, but when I print to Adobe pdf, the printer icon pops up in the system tray. When I click on it, the window displays the print job with status: Error-sent to printer. It's the same thing when I try to print a web page or a Word document to a pdf.
By the way, this version of CS2 came with Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 and Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 on seperate disks from the CS2 installation disks. Thanks in advance for the help.

And by the way, I did look at my startup folder. The following items are checked:
    Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher
    Adobe Acrobat Sychronizer
    Adobe Systems, Inc. Gamma Loader
AcroTray - Adobe Acrobat Distiller helper application

  • Problems with print to pdf with Acrobat Pro 9 and FireFox 8

***The page I am using for my base is: http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/2010/12/google-ebooks.html
***I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and FireFox 8 installed.
The problem with FireFox is when I select a part of a web page and try to print that selected text the first line gets chopped, if the text is small the first line might even be missing completely.  Perhaps it is a margin issue but not sure how to modify this.
I know I am not being very clear but if anybody has any ideas or would like further info please let me know.
    Thank you.

I suspect if you do the same process with a print to paper, you will get the same result. I got the same result with SeaMonkey, but IE8 printed the full font to a PDF. That would suggest it is not Acrobat, but the browser. As I said, suggests, so be careful about drawing your conclusions.

  • Print & read problem with Acrobat 7

    Hi,
Recently my Acrobat 7 has developed a problem where I cannot open or create a PDF without a Microsoft Word window opening with a coded message.  The screen shows a "File Conversion" window which asks me to select either: 1. Windows (Default), 2. MS-DOS or 3. Other Encoding.  The rest of the window then shows a list of code.  Selecting 1,2, or 3 does nothing.
Any ideas on how I might fix this problem so that I can read and create PDFs again?
    Thank you!!!!!

    Dear Biker,
Thanks for your email.  Since receiving it this morning, I have received the following advice from HP Support and although I appreciate it's not your exact problem, maybe some of it will help.
I note that they suggest adding a Generic Drive for a Deskjet 990c model (even though mine's a Photosmart C46800) but later they mention my model so I suppose you need the 990c drive to make it all work.
One of the other replies I got from the forum was one which said, 'never buy an H.P'.   In fact, I'm so worried that H.P's advice will either cock-up my computer completely or change the way it prints 'Word' documents (currently O.K.) that maybe I'll buy a decent one..  Anyway, here's what H.P advised:
STEP 1  Add Generic Driver 990c
    1. Click 'Start
    2  Click Printers and Faxes'
3  In Printer folder, click 'Add a printer' icon
    4  Click Next
5  Select 'Local' and remove the check mark from 'Automaticallhy detect and install my Plug and Play printer
    6  Click 'Next'
    7  Click 'Next'
8 Select HP from Manufacturer list
9 Select the printer modeol as HP DeskJet 990c from the printer list, and then click Next
    10. Select Yes to make this printer the default printer and Click Next to continue
    11. Select No to skip the test page and then click Next
12 Click finish to complete the installation.
    STEP 2 Configure the port
1  Click Start, then Printers and Faxes
    2.  Right click on HP Photosmart C4680 All in one printer icon and then selct Properties
3  Select the Ports tab and then check which port is selected from the list of ports.  Make a note of the port that is selected
    4  Close Window
5  Right click on the HP Deskject 990c printed icon you have installed, then select the ports tab.  Select the same port that was selected for the HP Photosmart C4680 printer icon
6  Cick Apply and the OK

  • Windows 7 64bit Print spooler crash with Acrobat pro 9

i recently installed a new computer with windows 7 64 bit - also upgraded my old CS to CS 5.  whenever trying to print any .pdf or even look at the .pdf printer settings - my print spoller crashes and i have to go into system32/spool to fix
    has anyone seen this issue?

If you would like to find which printer driver cause the crash issue, I suggest you isolate each driver and run
    printing job. Please:
    1. Open mmc in Start Search box.
    2. Click File->Add/Remove snap-in
    3. Add "Printer Management". Click Add "The Local Server".
    4. Click Finish.
    5. Expand Print Servers->[server name]. Click on Drivers.
    6. Right-click on the first driver, choose "Set driver isolation"->"Isolated".
    7. Start a printing job.
    8. If the issue still occurs, change the isolation to System Default for this driver, then isolate the next driver
    and start printing job.
You can find which driver is the root cause.
You need to involve a Windows 7 compatible driver for Windows 7 clients. If the driver is packed, you can extract
the driver pack and add the driver from printer server console. However, if the driver is included in an
installation file, you may try the following method.
    1. Install the driver on one of the Windows 7 clients.
    2. Launch mmc from Start Search box.
    3. Click File->Add/Remove Snap-in.
    4. Add "Printer Management". Point to the server in "Specify the printer server".
    5. Expand "Printer Management"->"Printer Servers"->"Drivers".
    6. Right-click, then click "Add a driver".
Please follow the instructions to add the Windows 7 printer driver. After doing so the driver should be added into
    the server.
If the printer driver is not found, the driver should be not designed for enterprise environment. In this case you
may need to add the printer from the client side manually.

  • PDF Printer not working with Acrobat 8 & Vista Ultimate 64bit

I have not been able to print pdf's.  I am uptodate on upgrades and have installed, reinstalled printers and repaired the program etc.
When I install an adobe printer I get the Adobe PDF Converter.  When I try to print with it, I get an audible failure signal and nothing ever happens.  Sometmes I get a sceen indicating it has failed, sometimes not.  I have had this problem since upgrading to a new computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit OS.
I have seen various "Fixes" but none seem to address my problem or work for it.
Anyone with the same problem and perhaps a solution?

    What version of AA8?

  • Figured out how to print to 11x17 with Acrobat (but how to save or do this in Preview?)!

after about a year and a half of doing the digital equivalent of walking into a very large building that is totally blacked out - and bumping around endlessly until i found a light swich - i am not able to print to 11x17 out of Acrobat on the Mac.
i have posted the steps below and when i recover from this herculean taks i am going to try and tackle printing to 12 x 18.
i just took another look at PREVIEW and i am afraid that it is going to take me another year and a half to figure out Preview and/or Numbers etcetera - so if anyone has any tips on printing to 11x17 or 12x18 in these two programs i would be uber happy to get the instructions for this.
also, if has ANY IDEAS on how to save this set of preferences so that i can simply print to 11x17 without going through all of these steps each time it would be great. i have not figured out how to save the presets and it is going to make me unhappy especially when i have to print 20 pages at a time.
    thanks!

here's documentation on getting 12 x 18 plots out of this machine.
LET ME KNOW IF YOU FIGURE OUT HOW TO SAVE THESE TO A PRESET.
    thanks...

  • Problems printing to PDF with Acrobat 7.1.0

I'm trying to print a document into PDF file; however the size of this document should be around 31 pages. After 10 pages, I'm asked to save the next 10 as a different file. Which settings to I need to adjust to print everything into one PDF file instead of 3 or 4 separate ones?

Never had such a problem. It may be that your pages are very large or something, but I have never heard of the result you are getting. What is your application and exactly what steps (windows, etc) are you taking to create a PDF. It helps if we can try to replicate your problem.
I regularly create documents that approach 100 pages, so the 10 page issue is not the norm.

  • Problem printing PDF with Acrobat Pro 9.4.4

    Hi!
I can't correctly print a PDF with Acrobat Pro that was created in Indesign CS5.
I want to print it on a letter format (8,5 X 11") and it offers me a format of 8,49 X 10,99". It results in having my document being printed as tile with it's original format 12 X 21,5" as if I didn't adjust the format to be reduced.
I temporary used Preview to print my PDF, but now I can't as the encoding in which I received the PDF used to be "Creo Normalizer JTP" and now it is "Adobe PDF Library 9.9"
    If anyone can help!
This is my first time here, thanks in advance for your help

Here's what it looks like (I work in french, hope you can understand)
I just updated my software, thanks for that!
Now, my problem is still on... I still have the very same result when I print. I did selected the correct Page Scalling I needed. I did selected the paper size I wanted. I chose Shrink to Printable Area and I tried with Fit to Printable Area.
Since I've had this problem the size appears as : 8,49 X 10,99 (Instead of 8,5 X 11). I tried with Legal (8,5 X 14) but it appears as 8,49 X 13,99. I went through the preferences, but I can't find anything that could be the problem.
    Any other idea?
    Thanks!!
Also, Preview was very helpful, as it did print my PDF correctly! I understand it's not the best... but it did the job

  • Printing problem with Acrobat Pro 10.1

I get an "Insufficient memory" message on my LaserJet printer when trying to print certain PDFs using Acrobat Pro 10.1, but the PDFs are printed without any problem from Acrobat Pro 9 or Preview. Does anybody else have this problem?

Thanks for responding I was using an MS Excel spreadsheet to merge details to produce labels in a programme called NiceLabel Pro.  The information from the spreadsheet was very simple - a readable code number and a QR code.  In the Nice Label document setup you nominate the printer - in my case this was the Adobe PDF printer - to produce a Press Ready quality PDF file.  I tried several times to print this file and each time ended up with page 1.  As the job was urgent and I had a deadline to meet, I ended up installing a programme called Nitro - which also produces PDF - to complete the job, without a problem.  However, I would prefer to stick with my Adobe Acrobat software as the other alternative is limited in its pre-press options.  Hope this information will enable a solution to the problem.
    - Thanks, Lynne
Hi again Dov - have you been able to come up with an answer to my Acrobat problem.  Would like to begin 2015 with workable Acrobat.
