Printing Problem in InDesign – Resolved in CS3/4 ?

With InDesign CS and CS2 it was not possible to print to a non-Postscript printer at a resolution greater than 300ppi – thus rendering text and graphics with less than smooth edges.  This was a limit imposed by the way InDesign CS/CS2 sends the document to the printer. In order to retain a colour managed workflow the workaround is to export the document to a PDF, import into Photoshop, and print from there (with full colour management).  Adobe have previously acknowledged this problem.
My question is this.
Has this issue been resolved in either IDCS3 or CS4 ?

You can choose Print as Bitmap and select 600dpi in IDCS3 & 4. In fact you will probably need to choose Print as Bitmap, printing to a RGB device if you do not want the monitor profile introduced into the print flow, unless you are printing with a Canon driver that you can choose Fast Graphic Process which bypass the Apple printing path where the monitor profile is introduced.
I do not know what dpi is actually being sent (by the drivers or Apples rendering) to the printing when Print as Bitmap is not selected but I have not seen any jagged edges but it does appear to be more than 300dpi.

  • Printing problems with InDesign CS3 running on OS 10.6

I recently upgrade my old G4 Mac (OS 10.4) to a new Mac Mini running OS 10.6.6. I am still running CS3 and have encountered only one problem. When I print multiple copies documents from InDesign that contain several layers, each copy is processed separately, so that it can take several minutes just to send the print job to the printer if I'm printing over 20 copies. Then once the print job is processed the printer pauses between every copy, which is tripling the printing time. If I print a simpler document with only one or two layers it processes all the copies at once, as it should. I am printing on an Okidata 6150 color laser printer.
I never had this problem on my old computer. I'm wondering if this is one of the "unsupported" bugs of running CS3 on Snow Leopard. I want to make sure that this is a problem unique to running CS3 with Snow Leopard before I go ahead and upgrade to CS4 or CS5.

    Hi again Peter
It is version 5.0.4.  I updated it when I newly installed it a week ago in my new computer, and then again updated it just yesterday.
I might mention that before I got my new computer, I was running Mac OS 4.11, and was using InDesign 3.0.  I had bought InDesign CS3 about a year ago, but hadn't gotten around to using it since version 3.0 had been working fine, and I was used to it.  Then, when I got my new computer, I decided it was time to use the newer version.  However, while using InDesign 3.0 with the old Mac OS 4.11, a printing problem popped up there, too, a few months ago... and it also involved printing problems with Adobe Reader.  I contacted Adobe, and they sent me a patch which fixed it.  I will contact Adobe again if need be, although I thought I'd start here first to see if it was a common enough problem that someone might be able to provide a free and routine answer.

I neglected to ask what version of indesign CS3 you are using. I also
notice that Mac OSX 10.6.4 has just been released. It actually
addresses some CS3-specific issues, though they seem to be related to
launching the apps, not printing. It may be worth trying to update,
    nonetheless.

  • Printing problems with InDesign CS3 with Mac OS 10.6.3

I am not new to InDesign... I have CS3... but I am brand new to Mac Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.3).  Although I can open CS3 and use the application, I cannot print with it.  None of my other applications has printing issues... just CS3.  Any suggestions?

  • Printing problems with Indesign and pdf

The fonts won't print after the InDesign doc has been turned into a pdf. It will print on some printers but not the large volume in our print room.

You need to provide an awful lot more information that what you have provided to us in order for us to assist you.
What version of InDesign? What OS? What PDF presets? What printer (brand and model) is it failing on? It the printer a direct PDF printer or are you printing to PostScript via Acrobat or even something else? What fonts won't print? Error messages? An example?

  • Print Problems with InDesign CS3

    Hi all,
Having problems printing jobs from InD CS3 on OX 10.5.5 (many machines) in our studio. We are printing to a Epson Stylus Photo R2400 powered by a PowerRIP X version 8. InDesign is 5.0.3
When we print more then one page from a document i.e. pages 1-4 as spreads, it prints them in reverse order and some of the spreads mirrored. Have also tried making PDFs and printing them, but the PDF just will not start printing. Prints fine if we print one page at a time.
Have spoke to the makes of PowerRIP X and they say Adobe know of the problem which is when InDesign makes the print files, has anybody had this problem on other prints/rips.
I would be very great full for any help/feedback.
    many thanks
    Simon

I installed PowerRIP X a year or so ago for a customer, but that was on PPC machines running Tiger. We did not have the sort of problems you're describing. It's possible that they are specific to either Leopard or Intel Macs.
Are all your machines Intel-based, PPC based, or both? Do you have any machines running Tiger on which to test?

  • Printing problem with InDesign CS6 Trial version

I have the trial CS6 InDesign. Began printing my doc but when I got to page 81 I got an error: "Printing Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem". Have NO issues in preflight check. It printed fine but suddenly stalled and have tried many things in cluding skipping pg 81 to no avail. Help, please! thanks, Paula

    Hello Peter,
Thank you so very much for your help. I have solved the problems. I did discover there were more errors. Using your method, I did find the offending page but then other pages emmerged. After the first fix, the other errors showed up in the lower left of the page so I could open the window for easy access to the pages. All the fault of a rank novice using the program but I have to wonder the following:
If the Pre-Flight check shows no errors, why are there still errors? Shouldn't the Pre-Flight find and report them all?
Well, on to the next waiting project and hopefully now that I know so much more I won't make so many mistakes! You and Bob were GREAT! Without you two and the Forum I would still be mired in my own unknown mistakes. Thank you so very much! If I ever see you at the InDesign User Group in Seattle will be sure to say hello.
    Cheers
    Paula

  • New printing problem with InDesign CS4

After having great success with Aisolve's earlier fix on printing from InDesign CS4 after upgrading to Lion, I'm having a new problems after installing the OS X 10.7.2 upgrade last week. When I try to print from  InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to my Lanier 445c/Ricoh C4500 at my workplace I get the following error message:
"Printing Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem."
This seems like a different issue this time, as I'm able to print to my home printers, an HP LasertJet 2600n and an HP Photosmart C4270. I thought it might be a printer driver problems, but I've gone to Lanier's site and they don't have any new printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.7.
I also some research on Adobe's site, and found this message affecting CS1, 2 & 3. I tried the only fix that seemed to apply to me, which was re-naming/deleting the InDesign Deafults and InDesign SavedData files. (I have this problems even when I'm printing a text-only file without any graphics.) This fix didn't work.
I can print to the Lanier/Ricoh from Acrobat 9, and all my non-Adobe software just fine, so my work-around to date has been exporting to PDF and printing from there. My big problem is that I need the "Print Booklet" feature in InDesign for a big job I've got coming up this week. Can't do that from Acrobat. :-(
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wanted to let folks reading this know that I spoke with an Apple tech person and found that the 10.7.2 upgrade apparently is the culprit, and is incompatible with wireless printing to my Lanier printer. I CAN print connected through USB. That's a work-around for now, but I'll need to contact Lanier about upgrading their driver
    for OS X 10.7.2.
Aisolve over on the Adobe board was also helpful in advising me that if I was able to generate a postscript file (which I was), and able to generate a PDF by distlling it through Adobe Distiller (which I am), then I can safely assume that the problem lies with the hardware, in this case the printer driver. This lines up with what Apple told me.
    Thanks, Apple and Aisolve!

  • Print problem with InDesign CS5 and Power RIP-X

  • Print problems with InDesign CS4

    Hi,
I have been using InDesign CS4 for the last few years and been printing large format on an HP Deskjet 9560. I always got good color quality on the printouts. Recently, I updated the software on my MacbookPro to Snow Leopard and I was forced to get a new printer, the HP Officejet 7610. When I try to print a docment from InDesign the color quality is really poor. I believe that this is an application issue because I am not having printing color issues from other applications. Can someone please advise if I need to change my settings in the document for printing to help with this color issue?
    Thanks,
    Kim Shephard

Unfortunately, I have tried this. I choose 'layout' from the printer option within the driver  and pick 'short edged binding'. Still no luck.

  • Printing problem with InDesign and Acrobat

I've just purchased Adobe Creative Suite 3 but cannot print A4 or A3 landscape from inDesign3 or Acrobat to either the Aculaser2600 or SytlusPro 3800. Illustrator and Photoshop has no problem. It prints but in the corresponding portrait print area
    Any suggestions

Yes, post your question in an Adobe discussion group, and not an Apple group.

  • Printing problems with InDesign PDF booklet

I've created a booklet in InDesign and exported it to PDF for my printer. In the PDF file all pages show correctly, until you print.
One page prints blank. It's a full page photo on that particular page. I have tried re-linking, exporting different PDF types, and even dropping a new file in.
My printer is convinced I am trying to sabotage her, how do I get that one page to show up in final printing?

    Which version do you use?
Did you patch your InDesign to the latest build of your version?
    Which OS?
What type are the missing images? Filetype?
Is your layer set to print?
If possible could you show us a screen shot of that particular page including the layer panel, opened all layers so we can see what is on that page. If pyossible show also the link panel with the missing file selected open to all information.

  • Printing problem with new Intel iMac and Indesign CS3

    Hi there,
this might not be the right place to ask for, but has anybody here experienced printing problems in Indesign CS3 with Tiger?
I just installed the software and tried to print out of Indesign, but nothing. I can see on the panel that data is beeing received but no printing action. And this is just out of the new Indesing CS3.
    Any suggestions?
    Best
    Rolf

Our office is printing fine from ID & PS CS3. This is from Intel & PPC Mac's running 10.4.9.
What is your printer and how is it configured for printing, ie USB or IP.
Also, have a look at the cups error log. You can find this via System Profiler > Software > Logs. This will show which process is failing for the spooled job. You can post it back here for more help.

  • CS3 print problems - can anyone help?

A year ago I replaced my G4 with a MacMini - since then I have been unable to print from InDesign or Acrobat (CS3).
My printer was an Epson RX560 - I called Epson after ensuring that I had all the very latest software, they said it must be a problem with Adobe or with the Mac. I called Apple who talked me through various methods to try to resolve the problem. Finally they concluded that it must be a problem with Creative Suite. I called Adobe only to be told that they do not provide support for CS3 anymore!!!
I have struggled on in a very long winded manner (create in InDesign, convert to PDF then convert PDF to Photoshop being the only CS program that I can print from).
I have no problem printing from other software.
Today I bought a new printer and foolishly hoped that this would resolve the problem but sadly not.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I can resolve this issue. I certainly cannot afford to upgrade to the latest CS version and am very unhappy that Adobe can't or won't offer any advice, after all I paid a LOT of money for this software and shouldn't be hostage to having to upgrade every couple of years.
    PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN.
    Much appreciated.
    Mac Mini OS X (10.6.8)

Thank you so much. I am midway through a project with a tight deadline so I'll have to wait a few days before trying this but I really appreciate your advice. I will let you know how things go. CHEERS

  • Tabloid duplex printing problem from CS4 (Acrobat and InDesign)

I cannot print a two-page tabloid (landscape mode) pdf document properly from a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro running 10.6.2 using Adobe Products (Acrobat 8 or 9, or InDesign CS3 or CS4) to an HP LJ5550DN. The printed version prints on both sides of the paper, but the right 1/4 of each page doesn't print. Furthermore, if I reboot and print just one side, it prints fine, but when I select duplex I get this problem and if I try to print just one side again, it prints w/o the 1/4 of the right side of the paper.
I can print the tabloid duplex correctly using Preview on the same computers. I can also print correctly using Acrobat 7 from a Mac G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. I can print a single tabloid sheet correctly from Illustrator CS3 or CS4 from the Snow Leopard computers, but since Illustrator doesn't handle more than one page, can't send it duplex.
I conclude that the problem is the Adobe software under Snow Leopard. If you know what is wrong with the Adobe software, please send me the fix - it would streamline the process.

I'm having exactly the same problem, with a 5500dn. As with you, the problem is present in both CS3 and Acrobat 8 and 9, and I can print a duplex A3/tabloid PDF correctly with Preview. (only the colour balance is rubbish!)
Mac OS 10.6.2, print driver HP Color Laserjet 5500 v3010.107 (although it's obviously not the driver).
Needless to say, any solution to this needs to address CS3 and later apps.
    Bug report filed.
    Thanks,

  • Is there any way to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4?

Are there any fixes or workarounds that allow me to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything I try now causes InDesign to freeze if I attempt to print. The only way is to export the file as a PDF. Thank you.

You shouldn’t be having a problem like that. I’m going to move this to the InDesign forum but it would help if you posted more details on the issues you’re having.
Another thing to try is exporting to INX from CS3 and opening the INX in CS5.5
