Printing Problems on network

WhenI try to print over the network from my Macbook Air I get the message "can't send data to printer". Worked fine last week. Printer wroks fine on usb port on my iMac.

Here's the walk-through of LPR printing on the IP protocol.
http://itinfo.mit.edu/article.php?id=6664
Note that under "Printer Type" they select "LPD/LPR"
If your printer has an ethernet jack, then the queue name is usually left blank and each printer has its own IP number ("Printer Address"). In the example, they typed a server name under "Printer Address". Chances are, you will be typing in an IP number (192.168.1.78, for example - the number assigned to your printer or to your standalone printserver)
If you're connected through a printserver and it has only one port, generally, the "Queue Name" is left blank (don't write "nil" like they did in the example) and the IP number is that of the printserver.
If you have multiple ports on a printserver, then each port has a name (and the IP number is that of the printserver - same IP number for both ports). Be sure to type the port name into the "Queue Name" field in Print Utility for each printer connected to a port on the printserver.

HP posted a workaround for this problem while they were working with Microsoft to get the root cause of the problem, many customers commented that the workaround helped them out and they were able to print. This workaround was not easy to use as the customer needed to add another printer manually and changed drivers.
We can now announce that the problem has been fixed, the problem involved a Microsoft Network component that HP was using to talk to and track the printers on the network. This fix is being rolled out by Microsoft via Windows Update and anyone who has Windows Update enabled and set to automatically install updates should have already received this update. For those that do not have Windows Update setup to automatically install fixes the fix is available now and should be installed.
The details of this fix and a manual method of installing it can be found here.

This fix is only designed for users that are using there printer on a Network (Wireless or Wired) and will not fix partial printing problems encountered with USB connections.

    @tenkeypro
First, I would suggest you uninstall the exsisting driver and reinstall following one of these documents to see if it will clear this error message:
Install HP print and scan software on a Windows 8 computer (32-bit and 64-bit)
    Universal Print Driver (no scan)
Driver support included in Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 or in Windows Update

  • Adobe reader XI: doule sided print problem with network printer (windows 8 pro)

Hi, I'm facing a problem with my old printer, the xerox phaser 3160n. It was connected to my notebook through network connection, and everything works well with Adobe X /Win 7 OS (including the double side print, of course) last month, I have upgraded my NB to windows 8 with clean install
clean install my printer driver for windows 8 too, and Adobe reader XI was also downloaded through official website.
However, since I was about to use double sided print in Adobe reader XI (11.00.02) it couldn't obey the order, but just print one side as usual
I have checked the "option" of my printer, and it was correctly set to "double-sided print". I have tried word 2013 to open the same pdf, and choose the same "double-sided print" and it works perfectly.
Is this problem a bug? and would it be corrected in the next update version??
(I remeber I've saw a similar issue too, with network printer, but I couldn't find it)
    Thanks!!!

    Hi,
Meanwhile, after insatlling the latest driver for printer from the manufacture website, restart the spooler service as a test.
Start > Run > cmd and type "net stop spooler" after that "net start spooler" or start > run > service.msc and restart it over the GUI.
Run Printer Troubleshootor under Action Center\Troubleshooting\Programs\Printer, and check if it helps.
And yes, the manufacture should have more sence about the printer, it's recommended to contact them.

  • PDF Printing problems with networked HP Laserjet C5020N

    Hello,
I'm having problems printing documents that I've created with the PDF creator of Office 2007. When I try to print only the first page, the printer correctly prints, but when I try any other job (printing the whole document, only the 2nd page, page 1 and 2, and so on) the printer refuses and prints one sheet that says:
    Error Name: /undefined
    Offending Command: --file--
    Operand Stack:
    I use Adobe Reader 8.1.0.

Also having other "permission" based problems as well. Other people cannot open my PDFs even though I have not used any security. I'm thinking about getting a previous version of Accrobat Pro and installing that.

  • Troubleshooting Leopard printing problems

Leopard printing problems fall into several categories
    a) Faulty or missing Leopard print driver
    b) Faulty implementation of the print command from the active application
    c) Faulty equipment, eg printer, cables, etc
    d) Faulty networking/sharing
    e) Faulty or incomplete software installation
The fact that a driver is included with Leopard is no guarantee that it will work. I have heard it from HP's tech staff that several of their drivers installed with Leopard are malfunctioning and I expect that many other printer manufacturers rushed out some poorly tested drivers in order to meet Leopard's shipping deadline.
Equally, some non-Apple applications have not yet properly tested their print command under Leopard so they cannot be used to reliably test whether a print driver is working or not. To get a more reliable indicator, save a print job as a PDF and then open the PDF in Preview and print it from there - or print a simple text page from TextEdit.
Also be sure to check cable connections carefully and if possible, try a different cable to make sure that this isn't the cause of printing problems.
Networking/sharing is fraught with pitfalls especially if the network is wireless. If possible, check printer sharing over a wired Ethernet network. There may also be issues when the print driver is not the same version on all computers in the network. To ensure that there are no remnants of a previous driver it's a good idea to completely uninstall previous drivers and then reinstall the most recent driver. To do this (for example on a 10.4 system):
    1. Delete the printer by opening Printer Setup Utility, highlighting the printer if it is listed and clicking on the Delete button.
    2. Clear the printer folder by navigating to Hard Drive/Library/Printers and dragging the offending printer-specific folder to the Trash.
    3. Clear the Printer Preferences by searching in the System for "com.apple.print" and dragging all files so named to the Trash.
    4. Empty the Trash
    5. Repair Disk Permissions
    6. Download the latest drivers for your printer and install.
    7. Open Printer Setup Utility and if the printer is listed, highlight it and press the Delete button at the top of the window. Then click the Add icon, single-click the name of the printer and click Add so that the printer appears in the printer list.
    8. To check that it works, create a test page in TextEdit, configure the print job in the Print window and print.

  • Communication problem with network printer

I have a Lexmark X9350 all-in-one printer. It has a built in wireless card and I am trying to print to it from my Powerbook G4. I have an airport extreme network setup in my home, and my PC is able to access the printer just fine. When I installed the printer software on the mac, it recognized the printer on the network and worked at first, but then suddenly couldn't find the printer. When I uninstalled and reinstalled the software it was very strange because when I got to the point where it searches the network for a printer, sometimes the printer shows up, and then if I click to refresh the printer sometimes disappears. It is not an issue with being out of range, because the printer display tells me it has plenty of connection, and as I said the PC can print with no problems. It appears to be something specific with Tiger not being able to consistently detect the printer.

I would look at XP's port configuration for the printer and then try and use the same protocol on the Mac. If XP is showing it as RAW Port 9100, then that is shown as HP jet Direct - Socket on the Mac. The only issue then is whether the OS X driver is available in the Lexmark list. Sometimes the provided OS X driver is only for direct USB connections, so you have to look at using an alternate driver, such as those offered by Gutenprint.

  • Home wireless network printing problem

    Hello,
I have a Canon MP610 which I can use just fine connected directly to my Macbook (running Leopard). But I am trying to connect to it wirelessly through a D-Link DIR655 and Windows XP workstation (the Windows computer is connected to the LAN port and the Canon printer is connected to the computer via a USB connection).
I have Printer sharing checked under the Windows Printer Properties and I can “find’ the printer’s name wirelessly on my Macbook when I “add a printer” from the “Print & Fax” box, but I cannot find the driver. I have looked under the “Select a driver to use” option, and “Other” selection. I have installed the latest driver on the Macbook, but don’t know where it is for me to select when that window pops up for me to select one (“Print Using...”).
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Royce

I had the exact same problem with my Canon MP760 when i was using Tiger. The only solution i found was to use an Airport Express base station to connect the printer, then it worked flawlessly. Seems to an issue that some Canon USB printer are not networkable unless they are connected to an Apple product.
I hope you can find a solution other than having to buy another piece of hardware.

Not printing text only on Canon--grahics print ok.  Not printer problem.  Prints ok on a Brother and another network Apple prints ok on Canon.  Believe a computer setting was inadvertently reset.  What setting and how do I reset?

Without your printer model numbers, readers can only give you vague general directions.
    System Preferences > Print&Fax > ...
... shows a list of all set-up printers.
If you are having serious problems, it makes sense to "Reset the Printing System" (which also removes all printer set-ups) and add back each printer. It only takes a few minutes.

  • Network Printing Problem (cgpdftops)

I'm attempting to print to a networked HP color laserjet 2550 and I'm getting a strange error message in the print status dialog box on every print:
The process "cgpdftops" terminated unexpectedly on signal 10
When this message appears, only the first page of the job is printed. Any idea what signal 10 is as my attempts to find out the meaning have failed.

I added the printer through the IP tab of the add printer dialog box, using the IP of the server as the address and selecting HP Jetdirect-Socket. I accepted the default "Generic PostScript Printer" driver option. I sent a print job, but it hung on an "Network host 'balder.bme.unc.edu' is busy;" error message. I removed and added the printer and added it again, this time selecting the proper driver, but received the same error message.
Issues with this might be related to the fact that there are two printers shared through the server.
I'm also leaning towards this being a printer driver problem, given that I was able to print to another printer (an HP 3500) using the "hp color LaserJet 2.0.1" driver. This driver was automatically selected for the 3500, but I can't seem to find the 2.0.1 driver in the list when attempting to add the HP 2550.
If I add the HP 2550 using the generic PostScript driver, the printer works as expected, all pages print from documents, but the cgpdftops error still appears in the printer queue dialog box.

  • Problem with network printer on Windows 7 machine

I'm running Mavericks on a Mac Mini.  I have a Windows 7 machine with an attached Brother HL-5340D printer.  I'm using the Brother HL-5340D CUPS driver.  Whatever configuration I use, I cannot get my Mac to print from the Brother.  I have even set up dhcp on the Mac and connected to the Windows machine with a cable.  I have tried ipp, ldr/ldp, windows, ip, and most of the relevant options under advanced, and nothing works.  I've run out of ideas on what to try and how to test and where to look for hints.  All I get is the following:
Unable to connect to ‘192.168.33.2’ due to an error.
    Not a lot of help.

    James Wilde wrote:
    1. I forgot to say that it was the Mac equivalent of dhcpd that I turned on so that the Mac is the server, on 192.168.33.1, and it has assigned the number 192.168.33.2 to the Windows box.  And yes, I do prefer in these cases to use fixed addresses, but the Windows box seemed reluctant to accept its ip address thus the decision to start dhcpd on the Mac.  After that I could not ping the Windows box from the Mac box.  I didn't try to ping the Mac from the Windows box.  I'll try that tomorrow.  As to the network, there are only these two machines on the cable network.  The default router on the Windows box is, if I remember correctly, set by dhcpd to the ip address of the house router.  I have now disabled the cable network.  See below.
Unusual that you could not ping Windows from the Mac. Would explain why you got a connection error with this setup. But if you have now stopped using the cable connection then this is mute.
    James Wilde wrote:
    2.  The network profile is set to Home on the Windows box.  I don't see any references to Homegroup in any of my messages on this topic.  If you are referring to another post I made on a different subject, I am aware of the problems with Homegroup, and as far as I know, I have avoided this, since my wife's Windows box is the only Windows box in the house.  Everything else is either Mac or Ubuntu, apart from one or two Windows virtual machines on my Mac and Ubuntu boxes.
No, you didn't mention Homegroup but you did mention not being able to see the Windows computer "Incidentally I now find that I can't get any result from selecting Windows in the Add Printer dialog." So I thought I would mention that Homegroup can cause this.
    James Wilde wrote:
    3.  I've tried all three options in the Add printer dialog, IP, Windows, and Advanced.  Under Advanced I have tried lpd and spoolss and ipp, under ip I have tried ipp and lpd.  The share name is Brother-HL-5340D, and the hyphen between Brother and HL I put there myself to make it one 'word'.
I've just tried your suggestion and get the following when I click on Add.
Unable to verify the printer on your network.
Unable to connect to ‘192.168.1.202’ due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?
I've seen this occur when the LPD process is not working. Open the Services pane on the PC and check the LPD service has started. If it is running and you still get the error message, what happens if you say yes to creating the printer?
    James Wilde wrote:
As i said, I have disabled the cable network and am using the house wifi network (all machines with fixed IPs).  I can ping the computer and have just mounted a disk on her computer with smb using Finder/Go.  The mount does appear to be read only, but at least I can open all the folders.
    Anything else I can try?
That is a good outcome. Proves there is a functional path between both computers.
Since you can connect using SMB, and if you cannot LPD to work, then try adding the printer again using the Windows view in the Add printer pane. You should see the workgroup used by the Win7 PC followed by the Win7 computer name. Selecting it should prompt you to authenticate (unless you have saved the account in Keychain) and then the printer share name should appear. After selecting the share, select the Generic PS driver as a test to see if you can submit a print job - open the print queue on the Win7 PC to see if the print job appears. If this does work, you can remove the printer on the Mac and add again, this time selecting the Brother driver and then see if this works.

  • LaserJet M1120n MFP - Problems with printing over Wireless Network.

Hi. I have recently purchased a HP M1120n MFP printer.  There are three wireless laptops (Vista, & XP Pro) that use this printer via a DrayTek Vigor 27000GE wireless router, then via cat 5 cable to Ethernet on printer.
All three laptops can print, but sometimes the print queue backs ups.  The top print job will say "Printing" but it can say this for hours!  Then if I delete the print job, it will say "Deleting" - but nothing happens.  The only way to clear it is to reboot the laptop.
    Firmware datecode is 20080228.
If I connect via USB cable directly to the printer it works correctly.
Any ideas to help resolve this frustrating problem?

The bottomline is that this printer has no way of connecting other than a straight USB connection.   In order to make it wireless you have to have a device that will give it an network IP address.  The printer by itself can not do this.
The only way to get this printer on a network is to buy a SEPERATE USB Printer Server.   Or, buy a separate router, like I said, that has a USB connection on the back that will support printers.
You can not connect it the way you want as it stands right now.
However, call your ISP and have them set it up IF their Gateway device has a USB connection and really can support a printer.  It is their issue.

  • Hp Officejet Pro 8600 Plus network printing problems

I hard wired my Hp Officejet Pro 8600 plus with an ethernet cable to my router to enable other computers on my network to print to my printer.  Several problems have resulted because of this:
    1. I cannot find my printer in the Device Manager: it shows as an "unknown device"
    2. Sometimes pdf files will print and sometimes they will not. Word and Excel files sometimes print, and sometimes don't.
    3. Sometimes documents will spool, but then I get the following message: "Unable to communicate with printer." Then it asks me to make sure all cables are connected and power is on, which is the case.
I have tried all kinds of troubleshooting with information found in Hp forum and on Hp website. Finally, using the HP Print and Scan doctor, I deleted and reinstalled the printer and updated the Full software and drivers. Then I got a message saying "the printer is on your network, but the network software is unable to find it using the typical network discovery method. You can install the printer and operate it normally over the network using the IP address of your printer." I inserted the IP address and it took me through various steps to final installation.  I typed a short message into a new document on Microsoft Word and it printed, Then I tried to print some information from the HP website, but this did not print; it didn't even spool.
My router is not detecting the printer on the network either, the light on the port bearing the network cable connected directly to the printer has never been shown to be on, like the other lights. I have been struggling with this for the last several months.
I have an Hp computer, running on Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit). I prefer to use my printer over a network ethernet cable instead of wireless.  Please help!

I believe this is the cause of your problem.  First, try another known working port in the router.  Next, change the Ethernet cable with a known good cable.
