Printing PS3 on Brother DCP6690CW

Thanks for reading this! Am really not sure whether this is the right forum for such a query...
Getting straight to the point, my issue is the following:
I am part of an organisation where we use an operating system called Advantage Windows (By GE Healthcare) for use with MRI and CT Scan machines. We had, until recently, outsourced all of our colour printing to a company who had a xerox printer + linux workstation to do all of our colour printing. Since they were basically charging a bomb, and their service sucked, we decided to chuck them and get our own printer. Subsequently, I got the Brother DCP6690CW printer, with a refillable ink tank. Print costs drastically decreased. The problem is that the Advantage Windows Workstations can only print to a PostScript 3 printer, which the Brother is not. So right now, one has to export the images that need to be printed onto a pen-drive, and give the print from a nearby windows computer. Even though this is not particularly tedious, I would want to know whether its possible to print PS3 data on the Brother DCP6690CW? Right now it is directly connected to the office WIFI without any one PC acting as a server. I feel that there must be some way to print this data by using a PC as a server or something.

I've never heard of Advantage Windows, so I'm not sure that I can be of help.
If the actual applications are packaged and branded as Advantage Windows and it runs on a Microsoft Windows O/S then I think there is a good chance of success here.
Are you not able to pick from a selection of installed printers? (This indicates whether you could substitute a print driver for your non PS printer)
Does the output always go to a file instead? (Confirmation that the output probably comes from a "hard-coded" PS driver)

try disabling email scanning for incoming mail.
One of the last things that occurs is the mail server and Thunderbird sign off on "where we are up to" and Thunderbird stores this state information in the popstate.dat file in your profile (there is one in each POP mail account folder). If the anti virus, or you for that matter, end the conversation a few seconds early that hand off does not occur and the popstate is not stored.

Can't print to Networked Brother MFC-7420 Printer after installing 10.6

A few days ago my dad decided to finally take the plunge and let me upgrade his operating system from 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on his Imac.
Ever since then I have been unable to print to his Brother MFC-7420 printer.
The printer is connected to his Imac via USB and I connect to his printer through our Linksys Router on my laptop MacBook Pro. The downside about this setup is that his computer has to be physically on for me to be able to see and/or print to the printer.
When he was running 10.5 I was able to print to his printer with no problems but now that he is running 10.6 I can "see" the printer but when I sent a print job to it the Print Queue for the Brother on my screen says "Connecting to Printer" and never gets any further.
Printer Sharing is turned on as usual allowing "Everyone" on the network to print. I've tried removing and reinstalling the driver on my computer to no avail, I haven't tried doing the same to his computer.
A side note to make though, when my dad is running 10.5 on his machine and I try to add the Printer via my Print&Fax the system will automatically set the "Print Using" to the correct Brother MFC-7420 Cups" driver. However, if he is running 10.6 my system just comes up with the "Generic PostScript Printer".
Is there something I should do on his end or my end so that "my" computer can print again to his printer?
Any suggestions are appreciated, if any of you need more info feel free to post and I'll try to help. Thanks!

A couple of suggestions for you.
Ensure you have installed the MFC-7420 OS X 10.6 CUPS driver on both Mac's.
Open Print & Fax and select the Default view and select the shared printer. When your Print Using menu selects Generic Postscript, change this menu to 'Select printer software' and then search for the 7420 driver. According to Brother support the driver name will be listed as "MFC-7420 + CUPS".

I had the exact same problem
It turns out I was using a 20 foot USB cable between the printer and the Airport Extreme and the signal had become to weak to work. Try using nothing more than a 6 foot cable or try a new cable

10.5.3 has broken printing to my Brother printer

I updated both my MacBook Pro and my wife's MacBook to 10.5.3 three days ago. Since then, we cannot print to our Brother MFC-440CN (usually connected to our Airport Express).
All attempts at printing, wireless or USB, fail. When I'm watching from the print queue monitor it flashes the following error message when I try to print:
Unable to send 3378 bytes of print data! (USB write error)
I was able to see, install and print on my friend's HP off of his Airport.
Can anybody help? Is there a solution other than waiting for Apple or Brother to issue a fix?
I have deleted and reinstalled my Brother multiple times, and printing fails and I get the error message no matter what (even if the printer is plugged directly into a USB port on one of our computers.

What did you update from? 10.4 or a previous version of 10.5?
Did you look for any updates on Brother's website?

I can't vouch for it, but you could look into it. CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) is the open source underpinnings of how Macs print. More at www.cups.org
You can also try to reset your printer. There are some shareware programs out there that do that. I can't recall them at the moment, but that fixed a printer that I had printing to a couple of years ago. I looked around, but couldn't find anything.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the current incarnation of Snow Leopard, and fixes various issues in earlier releases.
Current versions of Mac OS X 10.6 include the necessary printer driver for the Brother DCP-7030 printer (HT3669). (The asterisk footnote on that printer indicates there was a recent update via Software Update, so get to current 10.6.8 and ensure the Brother printer software update has been selected and loaded.)
If you're on the current Mac OS X version and if have the Brother update loaded (from Apple) and if problems with the printer persist, then remove the printer from your current Mac OS X configuraton, and re-add it, and see if that clears the particular issue(s) you're having with this printer.
From experience, the Brother software for Mac OS X is a little odd, and the older software stuff (and particularly around the scanner controls for their multi-function series) were, um, unusual, and a little unstable. Printing generally worked fine, though. Recent versions of the Brother software are working better including for the scaller, but the UIs and the set-up are both still odd. If you're using the box as a printer (I haven't looked at the DCP-7030 features), then you're best using the Brother software that arrives from Apple and not the software from Brother.
Also ensure the printer firmware is current. That's corrected some odd behavior on some Brother printers.

Print / scan to Brother networked printer via Express

I have a Brother MFC-5840CN networked through my router. I have been able to setup the print and scan functions pretty easily for connected computers. However...
I am trying to use an Airport Express to connect to the network so that I can print to the Brother printer. Currently when I print, the wireless computer is not able to communicate with the printer.
In the Airport Admin Utility I have unchecked the "Distribute IP addresses" checkbox so that the IP address appears to be on my network. I am not really sure if I am setting it up the right way. I don't know if I have to enable the DHCP on the Express and do some sort of port mapping?
Can anyone make any suggestions?
Maybe I am going about it all wrong, but from what I have heard if I connect the printer directly to the Express via USB I cannot scan (have information sent back to the wireless computers)? In addition I cannot connect the printers ethernet connection to the Express because then I would not be able to print from the networked (non-wireless) computers.
I would really appreciate any help. I'm sure this will take someone with some pretty advanced networking experience.

From what you have described - you have done everything correctly.
As you are aware, you cannot use the scanning function of an all-in-one printer if it is connected to the USB port of an Airport Express.
Since you have an all-in-one printer designed for connection directly to a network, you have done the right thing by cabling the MGC-5840CN to your ethernet network.
You have also done the right thing by cabling the Airport Express to that same network, and disabling the router built into the Airport Express by unchecking the setting to "Distribute IP addresses". NO other changes need to be made to the Express, specifically you do NOT need to implement port mapping nor do you need to enable DHCP.
My questions:
- after you reconfigured the Airport Express, did you restart all wireless computers?
- what is the IP address of the wireless Mac (check in System Preferences->Network->Airport->TCP/IP tab)? Of the printer?

I have downloaded the print drivers for brother H21740 but they will not install for some reason. Does anyone have any ideas?

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

Without your printer model numbers, readers can only give you vague general directions.
System Preferences > Print&Fax > ...
... shows a list of all set-up printers.
If you are having serious problems, it makes sense to "Reset the Printing System" (which also removes all printer set-ups) and add back each printer. It only takes a few minutes.
