Printing slowed down again upon install of 10.6

When I originally bought my macbook, the printing on my Brother DCP-115C was extremely slow & went at about 1/3 it's usual speed, even on fast printing. After doing software update, though, this cleared up with updated drivers.
Now having installed Snow Leopard, the printing has gone back to it's slow speed again, despite having a newer driver version. There are no new drivers on software update.
I'd prefer to just have the old driver back that I was using before, is there any way to do this?

If there another diagnosis besides CPU process usage? My activity monitor is showing less than 2% CPU usage (and at least the same amount of idle RAM as occurred with Leopard). Yet my fans are running continuously at 6000 rpm which I believe is the top speed. Before, with Leopard, even if the computer got pretty hot the fans only ran about 2000 rpm and even then, not for long.
Isn't it bad for the fans to run flat out all the time? Is there another diagnosis?

  • 3 month old iMac has slowed down considerably after installing ML

I bought my iMac 3 months ago and installed Mountain Lion last night. Now everything on my Mac has slowed down considerably. From opening the System Settings to opening a page in Safari.
I have MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint installed and also VMware Fusion.  I have software (CorelDraw) that only runs on Windows (the one I have) therefor the virtual harddrive.
Is this what is causing the problem? If so, how can i uninstall ML to get my computer back to it's previous state.
I am very new to Mac so I don't quite know where to go and how to fix it.

I was just about to write the same problem, but I don't have VMware; my laptop is late 2008 was running Snow Leopard (uptodate version).
I've scientific softwares so probably would require a clean re-installation of ML. I MUST MENTION HERE that those software which were written for PPC will NOT work on ML. Just found out that one of my important softwares version won't work on ML; need $500  to upgrade that software .
Therefore, I'd also want to know how can I go back to SL.
I'll let you know how clean re-installation has worked.

  • Intel Mac Slowing Down Post Leopard Install!

Please help! Recently I installed Leopard in my new iMac 20 inch 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. As of late, I have noticed significant slow down in my computer's performance. I'm starting to see a lot the rainbow swirls and I can't do anything for about 5 minutes at a time during normal use. Anyone also affected?

My Power settings have the HD spinning down every 10 mins after inactivity, but it speeds up in an instant. You don't even notice it. I doubt your slow downs are due to this. I did an Erase and Install when I installed Leopard and it has been completely smooth and very fast. You should do an erase and reinstall with no extra apps or peripherals. If it is slow then, just using bundled apple software, then it is fair to say you have a problem of some sort and should call apple. Make sure you do an erase and reinstall and repair permissions and reset PRAM and the system before you call apple, because you'll wait on the phone an hour just to be told to do those things before they'll speak to you about other possible solutions!

  • InDesign CC slows down significantly upon placing a Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 file

I'm running the latest Mavericks OS on a brand new iMac 27" 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 computer with 32 GB RAM. The slowdown occurs even if ID is the only app running.
The Word files consist mainly of text which are typically book maunscripts. It doesn't seem to matter whether the files are large or small. They all cause ID to slow down. We want to import the Word files so as to preserve mainly any italics.
Once the ID document contains a placed MS Word file, the slows are apparent mainly in:
Selecting a text box: 20-30 sec lag waiting for the beachball until it selects
Clicking to place the insertion mark: an additional 20-30 sec
Placing an image file: 20-30 sec for the import dialog to appear, 20-30 sec after the open button is clicked for the selected image to appear on the page
We've tried uninstalling ID CC via the script in the app folder.
We've also completely uninstalled MS Word follow MS's instructions, and reinstalling Word.
We've cleaned up our fonts with Extensis' Font Doctor.
We've deleted fonts we don't use.
One of the main reasons for buying the new iMac was to hopefully benefit from the enhanced processing power, additional RAM, and clean installs of the software.
    What else can we try?
Page layout for books using ID CC with Word is the bulk of our work and we need to resolve this matter ASAP.

Thanks for the info, Bob. We've been Adobe pro customers since '87 and have been through a number of such hardware/software "leapfrogs." We basically love the CC products and the new Macs and Mavericks, so we're looking forward to the updates.

  • Printing slowed down recently

    Gang,
I have a 1.6GHz G5 PowerPC running OS 10.4.8. I print through the Ethernet network to a HP 2300dtn. It has worked flawlessly for a couple or more years now that we've had it.
Sometime in the last week or two the printing process has slowed to a crawl. It takes upwards of a minute or two for the first page to print, then sometimes equal amounts of time for subsequent pages to print from the same job. These same documents used to start printing almost immediately and would print out at the rated speed of the printer (something like 4 or 6 pages per minute).
I have looked at the printer's status box (the thing that comes up when you click the printer's icon in the user\library\printers folder) and it spends a lot of time toggling between Preparing Data and Sending Data. It takes a bit on Opening Connection, too (if I'm remembering the terms correctly).
I've downloaded and reinstalled the HP driver to no avail.
Any other thoughts? I know there were a couple software updates recently, but I don't recall what they were (iTunes, maybe a Quicktime update, others?).
    TIA,
    _dennis

I posted prematurely. Since then I tried printing to another 2300 and a 2200 on the network, and they printed quickly like they should.
The problem appears to be isolated to this printer and not my computer. Strange thing is that other users on the network (all Windows users) do not appear to be having a similar problem printing to that printer.

  • Multifunction printer slows down connection

Brand new FIOS double play installation (internet 20/5 + phone).
Scenario 1: Just internet = perfect speed.
Scenario 2: Connect a phone to my second wall outlet = still perfect internet speed.
Scenario 3: Connect my new Brother MFC-990CW multifunction printer to the wall jack and suddenly my internet speed drops by 25%.
    Has anyone had similar issues?
    Thanks.

    weedeater wrote:
Would it be safe to assume this printer is wireless?  And that you're looking at speeds over a wireless connection?
    Hi.
Yes, it's wireless. But the problem only occurs when I plug in the RJ-11 cable. And yes, I did try to connect to the router via Ethernet, and the problem persisted.
The good news is that I have fixed the problem, despite what I was told by the Verizon reps at my store (twice).
    IT'S THE FILTER STUPID!
In short, I went to Radio Shack, bought a Gigaware DSL filter and placed it on the fax line and my speed is back up. So, despite what we are told, DSL interference can, apparently, also occur on VDSL.

  • System slow down with Mavericks install

After upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks my system seems overall very sluggish. Mail in particular takes an extra long time to show up after I click to get new mail. Other tasks such as when choosing an attachment to include will take 45 - 60 secs to populate the list of available files from a directory. I looked a t a console log and found at least on obvious thing that seems to be crashing repeatedly but do not know what the message means nor how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mac Mini very slow at 4 gig memory, upgrade to 16 still slows down but takes a longer time

I bought a Mac mini a year ago. With an i7 and i terabyte and it cam with only 4 gig of ram. It worked fine for a while and i installed some apps then it started to get very slow. seeing the colorful "hourglass " turn round and round quite a few times. Then i went to the activity monitor where it told me that the memory used was about 3.89 gigs. I purchased a memory cleaner app from thr app store which helped a bit.
Today i upgraded to 16 gig memory and bang my computer ripped. The activity manager said i was using 6 gigs of ram and had 9.8 remaining.
after being on the internet for a couple of hours and using Firefox with about ten tabs open the computer started to get very slow again.
I checked the activity manager and it read 6 gigs used and the cash read a whopping 9 gigs. Did not think i would need the memory cleaner any more but after doing a clean it worked better.
Why did i get a whopping 9 gigs in the cash ? which is what it read after my computer slowed down again.

You may want to post in the Mac Mini forum, this is the iMac forum. If you would like me to I will ask the moderator to move the thread.

  • Windows 8.1 gradually slows down after hours. Speed returns normal if restart "explorer.exe".

I have Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) installed on Alienware M17x. The slowdown mostly appears as slow response in the situation such as open a folder/window, open/close/switch tabs in IE, drag window, and there's also cursor lag. It gradually
slows down after system boot, noticeable after 3-4 hours, really slow after 8-9 hours.
I have thought about many possible processes which can cause this issue, and then I found out that it's caused by "explorer.exe". If I kill "explorer.exe", the speed suddenly becomes normal. Then, I restart explorer.exe
again, it stays normal, and then it still gradually slows down again after hours.
I have checked driver or software compatibility. Also, CPU usage and Disk usage is normal.
Please give some advises, reasoning, or solutions.

The process that is causing the problem is called sidebar.exe and I am curious why it is running on a win 8 machine as I dont believe it is built in. (It seems to have over 22,000 instances launched so I suspect either malware or a broken app)
It is usually associated with a Vista machine, or updated win 7 machine.  Did you do do a clean install?  Have you run a malwarebytes scan?
Please download the free version of Malwarebytes.
    Update it immediately.
    Do a full system scan

  • Motion slows down to beachball

Hi all. Have had this problem since I bought my 27" iMac 3.1Ghz i5 with 12GB RAM. I'm working happily in Motion4 when it starts slowing down gradually until the dreaded beach ball of death kicks in. Have to restart the application and it's happy for some time while I work and then starts slowing down again. Never had this before with my other Macs including my MBP. Anyone with some suggestions that will save me the time of restarting every 15 min?

I have a 2006 MacBook (Core Due 2 GHz), which I have upgraded to Snow Leopard (via Leopard). I am trying to use the built-in camera ("iSight") for video chat, but when I do, the computer slows down to a crawl, and the application that is using the camera takes all CPU.
I've tried with both iChat and Skype, and the result is the same, so it seems to be in the camera drivers and not the applications themselves.
Does anyone have any good ideas on what I can do to alleviate the problem? I have not installed any specific drivers for the camera beyond what comes with Mac OS.
    Hello nafmo
Snow Leopard's iChat 5 does require more CPU power than iChat 4 (from Leopard), so you may, in part, be noticing that. The best way to verify that is with your Mac's Activity Monitor utility. For your comparison, my new 2.26GHz Core2Duo MacBook Pro uses slightly more than half of both cores for Snow Leopard iChat video chats.
Here are some other things you can consider:

  • G5 Power Supply Popped - Still works but fan speeds up/slows down nonstop!

    Hi,
After applying a security update for Tiger 4.11 on my G5 1.6 a few hours later my machine made a bang/pop sound. It still powers up but once running it sounds like the machine is ramping up to speed and slowing down again. It does this continuously even when machine is running. Apple hardware test reports no problems but i'm concerned. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Dan

I had a similar problem (fans speeding up then slowing down). I have iStat installed so I was able to look at the rpm's of the fan (free widget btw). My CPU fans ranged from 2500 to 3200, oscilated all day long....up, down, up, down ...every few seconds. I noticed my CPU utilization was up, which was odd since my machine was somewhat idel. Looked at Activity monitor and saw my CPU's sometimes reached 90%. The application that was using the CPU's was the printmgr. Stopped the process and everything is ok. I know it is unrelated to the popping sound but you might ck the activity monitor to see what is going on.

  • Is iOS 8 slowing down the wi fi on my iPad air?

Having lived through several OS updates I know that it takes a little while for apps to all be updated and for little glitches to be worked out.  However, I think iOS 8 has brought on some real issues with my iPad Air.
The overall issue is a slow connection to the internet.  This happens at home and in several other locations where I have used the wi-fi since updating to iOS 8 a few weeks, ago.  My work PC works fine (well... at least, the internet does), but my daugter's iPad mini (also updated to iOS 8) will slow down when she is watching Netflix, occassionally.  The family also has an iMac, which is working fine.
While using the Washtington Post (downloading the newspaper), Pinterest, Safari, You Tube, Mail and the App Store, the connection seems to slow down to a crawl making it impossible to continue what I am doing.
I've shut down and restarted the iPad, and then it works fine for a while, only to slow down again sometime later.  Sometimes the problem will seem to fix itself, but then it slows down again.  Sometimes, it happens when it comes out of sleep mode, and sometimes not.   Since I use my iPad to work from home, it is really frustrating.  I can delay my gratification when it comes to games and such, but not when I am updating my blog or reading my email.
I've Googled iOS 8 and wi fi and saw that there are a number of issues out there.  Some of the big tech magazines and websites are tracking some similiar issues.  I'm curious if anyone knows if this is all related to iOS 8 and if a future update will resolve it, or if there are ways I can test my hardware on my iPad to make sure it is working properly.
    Thanks!

How to remove ios 8 ? This is biggest failure of Apple. It slow down my ipad , freez application, freez key board....?

I have 3 Macbook Pro's and one AirPort Extreme (bought dec 2008), *all has been working flawlessly* for a year until about two-three weeks ago.
    *This is what happens:*
_Old Macbook Pro (2007)_ - *Works perfectly 100% of the time*, always at least 20mbit/s connection
    _New Macbook Pro 15" (2009)_ - *Drops/slows down*, sometimes fast 20mbit/s sometimes slow 0.01mbit/s
    _New Macbook Pro 13" (2009)_ - *Drops/slows down*, sometimes fast 20mbit/s sometimes slow 0.01mbit/s
_iPhones (2G/3G/3GS)_ - *All Work perfectly 100% of the time*
*I have reset the Airport Extreme 20 times* and tried the latest firmware 7.4.2 without luck. I have *even downgraded* to several other types of firmware. But problems still remain. This is doing my head in since I cannot any longer use the Airport Extreme with the newer MBP's.
So, only the new macs seem to have this problem. But the strange thing is that my older computer works 100% all the time!!!
_*Has my Airport Extreme broken or is anyone else having this problem?*_

I seem to have found a temporary solution. If I change the DHCP address series from 10.0.1.X to 192.168.0.X it works for about a week. Then it starts to drop/slow down again. So I use airport utility to again change it back to 10.0.1.X and it works for another week.. And on it goes.. This is so strange I can hardly believe it.

  • Macbook keeps slowing down and crashing

    Hi,
I started having this problem about 2 weeks ago. Everything was working fine, then out of nowhere, my macbook froze. I waited for about 10 minutes, then I turned it off. When I turned the computer back on, it was EXTREMELY slow. It took 15 minutes just to boot, and after that, even when i just moved the cursor, the rainbow wheel would appear and keep spining for 20 minutes. It was impossible to do anything. So I decided to restore the hard drive from a backup I had. After I did that, it worked fine for a couple hours, then the same thing happened. Then I did some research and concluded that my hard drive was dying, so I got a new one, restored it from my backup and replaced my old hard drive. But after a few hours same thing happened again.
So I know the problem is not related to the hard drive. Also, I everything seems to work fine when I boot from an external hard drive. Only when I replace and boot from the internal hard drive connection, the slow down occurs and eventually gets to a point where I can't do anything with my computer. Sometimes I can repair it using the disk utility and diskwarrior, but it doesn't last long, eventually it starts slowing down again and then the same thing happens. The operating system doesn't make any difference either. It happens both with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I'd appreciate it if anyone knows what would be causing this problem.
    Thank you.

How much free space on the drive?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
I have more than 50% free disk space. I did have some slowing down problems before because of disk space, but this time it's different. It's not a regular kind of slowin down, it slows down so much that it becomes imposible to do anything. Even when I just move the cursor, rainbow wheel appears and doesn't go away for 10 minutes.
    But thank you anyway.
