Printing: Stuck on 'Hold for authentication'

Hello. Im try to print from my mac mini through a windows 7 pc. I haven't ever gotten this to work. I can see the printer by choosing 'guest' when logging into the print server. I don't know what my username and password would be. When I save the printer and go to print something a the print status window comes up and says "Hold for authentication". I tried clearing keychains related to the print in keychain access. Anyone know of a soulution?

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access to search for the name of the shared printer. Double-click one of the items and check the box marked Show password in the inspector window. You'll be prompted for your keychain password to confirm. Make a note of the user name and password. Then delete every "Network Password" item in the search results. Quit Keychain Access.
The next time you send a job to the printer, you'll be prompted for the user name and password. Enter the information you noted earlier and check the box to save it in the Keychain.

  • Printing to a Windows shared printer, keep getting "Hold for Authentication" when I'm on the Windows shared network and can browse the computers.

I have had two MacBook Pros now, and this has been an issue in Mountain Lion and Mavericks. I've got a shared printer on the local Windows network (it's a USB printer shared via the network and the computer), and the other Windows computers in the house can print to it no problem. The Mac sees it no problem, yet whenever I try to print to it, I just get "Hold for Authentication."
Like I said, persists over Mountain Lion and Mavericks. No other computer in the house has any issues printing to it. I've installed the drivers for the printer as well (Brother HL-2240).
I've tried to follow the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23268762#23268762 but the printer isn't listed in Keychain Access.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, that isn't too useful. Try this instead: Adding a printer shared by a Windows computer via SMB/CIFS.

  • MAC OS 10.9   some users cannot print to new Ricoh MP C6502   print job is holding for authentication and cannot figure out why

I have a few IMAC and G5 users who have OS10.9 who cannot print to a new Richoh MP C6502, I downloaded and installed the new PS driver and it works on some systems but I have 3 people that goes right to Hold for Authentication.   I tried deleting everything associated with this in keychain access and after I did this it comes up to enter a password and it accepts the network login credentials but still holds the print job.  I even tried using guest as login and password as someone suggested but still cannot print any ideas on why?

I apologize for the delay in responding to you.  I was on the road all day yesterday.
OK.  I switched the printer's Ethernet cable to a Linksys Switch (Model EZX S55W) that's part of this local network.  That did not work.  I swapped out the cable for one that I know works.  Still no change.  I switched the printer's Ethernet cable directly to a port on the router.  No change.  I even swapped cables here, too, but no success.
As I was doing all this, I was wondering: When I select the HP P1606dn printer in the Print and Fax "Add" dialog box, (see the image below) and the Print Using pulldown menu displays "Please select a driver or printer model" and the message "Searching for new drivers" appears under it (with the spinning wheel), why is it that the Ethernet connection to printer is critical to "finding" a new (printer) driver?
Isn't the utility searching through my system and libraries looking for a printer driver app for the printer that I identified/selected in the dialog box?
After all, if the dialog box lists the printer among those to choose from, hasn't the utility already discovered the printer via the Ethernet connection?

  • "Hold for Authentication" printer error

Since upgrading to Mavericks (did a clean install, so not sure if Mavericks is the culprit per se) whenever I attempt to print to a networked printer (I am the lone mac in a Windows environment) I get the error "Hold for Authentication".  Any suggestions?  Here are some further details
If I have logged into a network drive, when I click the circular arrow on the right of the error message, I am prompted for my user name and password.  BOTH my network user name/password or guest/guest will result in successful printing
Each print job requires me to enter user name/pw, regardless of whether I have just entered it for a previous job
If I have NOT logged into a network drive, no combination of my name/pw or guest/guest will result in a successful print - I just keep getting the hold for authentication error
Steps I have tried to take:
    Resetting the printing system
deleting the printer and adding it again with a new name
Different comibinations of checking or not checing the "remember this password in my keychain" box
I am totally flummoxed and frustrated.  Any ideas?

I read many threads before discovering this simple fix:
Go to Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add a Printer (the + symbol)
Do NOT select any printers that you initially see displayed. They never worked for me. Instead, select the Windows tab (off to the right) <--- this is the step I constantly missed
Walk down through Workgroup (at least that's how my network was referred to by the PC) > Name of the PC > Name of the Printer (a short name assigned in Windows)
This FINALLY solved my problem. Oh, and when asked for “Authentication” (name and password), enter the name used to log onto the PC (from the Start menu) and the password used to log onto the PC. Allow this information to be saved in Keychain on the Mac so it won’t have to be entered in the future.
Hope this helps any future frustrated newbies.

  • I am getting a printer message "on hold, Authentication required" when directly connected (USB) to any printer I try to install to my MacBook Pro.  Any ideas?

I am having trouble with printing from my MacBook Pro.  After succesfully installing a printer, sending a print job results in a alert in the print que that says "on hold  Authentication Required"
I am fairly new to Mac and have not the slightest clue what I am doing wrong.  Please help!
    Thanks, Slojon

After upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion on one of our home computers and having no difficulty with printer access for months, after a glitch involving loss of power, suddenly "On hold (authentication required)" started showing up.
When I deleted the printer and then tried to add it back using the default listing for the printer I got the message "Unable to download the software from the server at this time."  I felt I was going backwards.  The whole situation was maddening for a couple of days.
    Details:
Older G5 Desktop Mac running OSX Snow Leopard wth an HP Color LaserJet 2550 attached via USB.
Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion.
    Airport WiFi network.
This is really two problems: how to add a printer successfully and how to print without authentication.
    How to add a printer
Do not use the default listing for adding the printer that shows up in the popup menu, instead use the generic "Add printer" command, then select the printer and printer type from the secondary menu that comes up.  This worked fine for me.
How to avoid the "Authentication required"
    Software update on both machines.
Reset printing system (Option & minus "-" key) on both systems.
Add the printer back to the server (older G5 Mac in my case) system.
Ensure that both the printer sharing is selected for the printer and …
… that printer sharing is turned on globally in the Sharing System Preferences
Add the printer back to the client system
I was also able to work this through the CUPS system described in other posts (http://localhost:631) but I always prefer to let Mac OSX handle the UNIX details since I have greater confidence I won't be inadvertantly messing something up.

  • Printer stuck in "delete-Printing" for four days; HP Deskjet 3000.

Tried to print 6 page PowerPoint file on HP Deskjet 3000, but printer stuck and would not print. Tried to delete from queue, but status continually shows "Deleting-Printing" for past four days.  How do I fix this?

    Hi,
From the Desktop, hold down the Windows key and press R.  Into the Run window, type services.msc and hit enter.  Browse down to the print spooler service, right click it and select Properties then click on the Stop button.  Now browse to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS and delete the job(s) inside this folder - You may need to click a prompt to gain the appropriate authority to open the PRINTERS folder.
Restart the computer and you should find the document(s) have been removed.

  • "paused for authentication" on a network print job?

what do I do with "paused for authentication" on a network print job? How do I authenticate so the job will print?

    Hello, ETeague.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that you may find helpful with this issue.

  • Hold for authorization in maverick when printing

When printing in Maverick to an hp printer I get the error "hold for authorization " . It asks for my username and password which I put in and it seems to start print but then I get my error. I am printing film.

    Hey there AppleRon,
It sounds like you are not able to print from your printer after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting steps in this article:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
    Additional Information
Note: If your printer is wireless-capable, you should first add the printer to your network. Use the printer's control panel, or temporarily connect the printer to your Mac via USB.  For more details, see this article.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Officejet Pro 6830 all in one - screen stuck on "checking for printer updates"

    Windows 7 X64 install
I ran through the entire installation process and while the printer will print and will scan - the printer is hung on the message "checking for printer updates" with a red x below that message.  I let it set all night and no change.  The printer is setup as a wired network connection and can be seen with any of the tools.  I have not errors on my system.  I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled twice without success.  I tried running a firmware update, but the firmware update states that I have the latest firmware rev.  I even unplugged the printer and plugged it directly into the wall - n o change.  Evertime I startup the printer screen, just hangs on that screen.
    Please help.

I have the exact same problem with my new HP Officejet Pro 6830 printer.  Please could you provide a solution else I guess it will have to go back to the shop as I only picked it up this afternoon.
Setup went ok and it even managed to print a couple of pages.  But next time it started up (with wired ethernet connection) this problem occurred and happens every time ever since.  (It is possible to use the printer for printing and scanning via PC, but the whole time its display is showing the "checking for printer updates" message.)
This even happens if the ethernet cable is not connected on startup (meaning the printer cannot be used as a standalone printer / copier either at the moment).
If I press the red cross (which I guess cancels the update searching) then I get a blue screen saying "B871634E" for a second or so, afterwhich I get a black screen with the message "There is a problem with the printer. Turn the printer Off, then On." and cannot do anything else.  (The problem is the same after doing a printer off then on - even when following the "hard reset" procedure already mentioned.)
On checking the firmware version via the PC utility (while the printer sits there "checking for printer updates"), the PC utility app reported that the firmware was the latest version.

  • Printing from InDesign asking for computer login password

Hi. Just got new MacPro, CS4 Design Premium. Every time printing from InDesign asking for computer login password. Never happened with CS3. Is there any way to avoid job holding in printer's dialog box, waiting for authentification?  No problems printing from Acrobat, Photoshop or Entourage etc. Checked computer preferences, nothing shows permission/security restrictions are applied. What could cause holding print jobs from InDesign?
Here's what it says in Status field: On Hold (Authentification required)...so I have to click “Resume” every time, enter password and only then it prints.
Printer: HP5100 laserJet. HP did not associated this issue with printer or drivers. Please help. Thanks!

    Thanks for your help, Marvin!
Sharing has been set up, PW is in keychain. Still asking for "authenification"..
After talking to Adobe tech support, here's the answer:
"Issue:  When attempting to print, customer is continually asked to authenticate.
Resolution:  Printer is possibly too old to understand the print data InDesign is outputting. Try updating drivers or using a newer printer".
I guess I will request new printed from management, mine is 2003...

  • Best way for authentication?

    Hello,
I'm running Oracle 10g Standard on a linux server and I would like to change the authentication method. The server is in an Active Directory. So users who are allowed to access the server can login using their domain account.
Until now additionally they all have an oracle user account with its own password. I'd like to change oracle to use their domain account from Active Directory for login.
I've experimented with the external login using user accounts created by
    CREATE USER ops$alex IDENTIFIED EXTERNALLY;
So users logged in to the server can log in to oracle using the same account. But I want to allow remote users to login to oracle using the domain account that is verified externally by the operating system.
There is a parameter remote_os_authent I could set to true and try, but documentation advises not to do this for security issues.
We don't have the Oracle Advanced Security Option, so it's not possible for us to use kerberos for authentication.
Is there any other way I can do to setup oracle authenticate domain users (by operating system)?

Thank you very much. I've read the globally part and tried to create a user identified globally with complete ldap cn and dc names but I get
ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Enterprise User Security
So is there still any option available to use ldap Active Directory users with Oracle Standard 10g without oracle advanced security option? Or am I stuck with local users?

  • Trying to disconnect Xfinity Home Security - been on hold for 90 minutes.

I recently signed up for Xfinity Home Security, and the service has not worked well at all.  We have had technicians out to our house multiple times.  Also, I get errors all the time when trying to arm the system from my cell phone.  Additionally, it will report doors being open, when they are closed. I have been on hold for over 90 minutes, and they are trying to charge me a huge termination fee to stop the service.  I never signed an agreement or agreed to any terms verbally.  They added it on at the Xfinitity store and were not able to even give me a printed copy of the services.

  • Combine files stuck on checking for security settings?

Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.1.1 on Mac OS X 10.6.8
I've been trying to combine 2 pdf files (scanned to pdf using Preview on Mac) in Adobe Acrobat. However, it keeps getting stuck on checking for security settings for a long time (see screenshot below).
I checked the security settings on each pdf file and they both are showing no security.
I opened the original file using Preview, open the Print window and saved it to PDF under different name and still I can't combine the files. Is there any other way to get this done? I've been searching on Google and this forum for hours and found no solution to my problem.
    Thanks.

    Seriously,
I have the answer!  I have found that Adobe Acrobat X is buggy.
1.) I cannot click on a pdf file in the finder to open in Acrobat X  - I must open the file from within the program.
2.) I cannot combine 2 or more pdf files in Adobe Acrobat X  as the files keep getting stuck on checking for security settings forever.
The FIX is to move back down to Acrobat 8.
Adobe 8 IS available as a FREE download here:
    http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4683-adobe-acrobat-8.html
The license key is noted on the web page for Mac and PC

  • Brand New iPod Classic stuck on hold!

So I just took my new ipod out of the box a few hours ago, charged it, ejected and disconnected, put it on hold, and then plugged it back in but forgot to take it off of hold before I did that. Now it's stuck on hold, the screen won't even go dark. I can't press anything and my computer doesn't seem to recognize it when I plugged it back in. I have tried moving the hold switch back and forth - nothing helps. Any suggestions? This is my first time having an ipod ever, and it's kind of frustrating to have it not working!
    Thanks!

Have you tried resetting the iPod?
This is done by moving the hold switch to on, then move it to off and press the menu button and the centre (select) button together for (up to) ten seconds. This should cause the Apple logo to appear on the screen and the iPod to reset. You may need to repeat this step. This has to be done sometimes when the iPod gets confused!
If that does not work, then try the 5Rs, see here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/ . Hopefully you will be able to reset it - try that first before the 5Rs.
It should not be necessary to turn the hold switch off before plugging the iPod into your PC.
    Regards,
