Printing to a PDF when Adobe Reader disables "Save as PDF"

I have searched far and wide on the web and cannot figure this out.
I have an Adobe PDF. When I try to open it with Preview, I get the following message:
Please wait...
If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document.
You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows®, Mac, or Linux® by visiting http://www.adobe.com/go/reader_download.
For more assistance with Adobe Reader visit http://www.adobe.com/go/acrreader.
Windows is either a registered trademark or a trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries. Mac is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the United States and other countries. Linux is the registered trademark of Linus Torvalds in the U.S. and other countries.
From what I have read, Adobe has imbeded some commands into the PDFs created by certain software which only allows the PDFs to be opened by Adobe products (Reader, Acrobat, etc.). I can easily open it with Adobe Reader and fill the document in. However, it is a job application, and I would like to be able to email it back to somebody, but I wish to make it so that it is not editable.
Normally, this would be easy, simply use Preview's "Save as PDF" function. Unfortunately, "Save as PDF" does not work from Adobe Reader, I am not sure why although I am sure both Apple and Adobe will point fingers at the other when asked.
Thus, I am looking for a program that will effectively clone a printer, but print to a PDF instead of a actual printer. I have used PDFwriter in the past, and tried CUSP-PDF, but neither seems to work in Mountain Lion. I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and the most current version of both of these  PDF print clone programs appears to be several years old, Snow Leopard era.
Any input on how I can convert the PDFs that are only openable in Adobe Reader to a non-editable format would be greatly appreciated. I can easily print them and then scan them back in, but the end result does not look professional and I would prefer to not have to do this.
Thank you,
Willis

I found another discussion that provided a solution:
CutePDF for Mac or other compatible software
For instrucitons on use see:
http://basics4mac.com/article.php/print_to_pdf#here
Look for the program CUPS-PDF.
"cups pdf is like cute pdf but for mac
https://bitbucket.org/codepoet/cups-pdf-for-mac-os-x/downloads
after installing you need to go to settings, printer, add printer
full instructions here
http://basics4mac.com/article.php/print_to_pdf
pdfs go in /Users/Shared/CPS-PDF/{your account name}"
Thanks to Bob Harris and geagon.
Be sure to allow all software to be downloaded.
You have to locate the file where the prints are saved.
However you can put an alias up to it on your desktop.

  • Adobe Reader disables Save as PDF

I have been filling a few tax forms as I usually do every year. Once I was done I tried to save it as a pdf, as I have always done. But I find that Adobe Reader has disabled saving as pdf!
Let me explain that when I say before I was able to do that, I mean I was able to use Adobe Reader on Windows to fill in the forms, and the print was captured by a PDF printer such as CutePDF or PdfCreator. I thought when I switched to Mac that I would never have to deal with those virtual printers since the functionality is built in on the OS.
I have a couple of questions about this:
    1) Why on earth does Mac OS allow a third-party program to mess with a basic OS function? Isn't Acrobat crossing a line by doing that?
    2) Is there any way to block Acrobat from blocking the save as PDF function?
    3) If not, what alternative do you suggest to save filled forms?
To question 3), saying that (a) you are not supposed to be able to save those anyway is bull (b) use Preview is a no go, since many forms I have seen are misaligned/missing fields/plain unworkable with in Preview, (c) install a pdf printer as in Windows (I actually tried this, the only one for Mac OS I could
find was cups-pdf, and despite what it says on the website it does NOT work on
    Snow Leopard).
So, there. I guess that for the time being I have to keep a Windows machine
around to fill in pdf forms. But I find it downright outrageous that an OS
as secure (according to advertising) as Mac OS allows any program to just mess
with its internals like that. Who knows what else they will do next with that
    type of access?

Adobe owns PDF. When you create a PDF file in Adobe Acrobat (the pay-for-it product), you can choose to allow the user to save the file after filling the form fields. You can also control if printing or saving is allowed.
Most files you find on the web are not modifiable. You are expected to print them out on paper and then fill them out by hand. This includes tax forms. This includes my State Farm claim forms! This includes my Mathematica activation request! For Apple to include editing of all PDF docs with the OS, they would have to pay Adobe a licensing fee.
Only the paid for CutePDF allows editing. They purchased a license. PDFCreator only allows reading/printing, pretty much the same as the free Reader. My Windows favorite is the same way: The free version of Foxit can not edit. The version that does edit costs $100.
Our college solved the problem by buying one copy of Adobe Acrobat and installed it on a common faculty computer. As we seldom need to edit files, it's pretty easy to sit down and get it done when necessary.
Don't you just love expensive proprietary software?
    typos
I am not talking about editing a PDF. I am talking about a fillable form, which I am allowed to fill in, but I cannot save the filled form as a plain pdf (on Mac, as I could do in Windows for free with Adobe Reader and a pdf printer).

  • Using "save as" in Adobe Reader to save a PDF document in Alfresco

Is it possible to use the "save as" option in Adobe Reader to save a PDF file directly in Alfresco?

    This is the scenario:
When I open any PDF document, there is only one option to save this document: "save a copy". What I am looking for is a way to connect with Alfresco server in order to choose my target folder inside Alfresco and then save the document in it.

  • Why can't I fill out a PDF in Adobe Reader and email it with the saved information?

When I fill out a PDF in Adobe Reader and "Save As" to desktop the filled out information goes blank when I attach it to an email. Additionally, I can't save to word or excel except for online. What can I do to fix this?

Try using Adobe Reader XI (fully updated).

  • How to disable Acrobat reader toolbar permanently when rendering PDF with Adobe Reader in-browser

    Hi ,
I am using Adobe Reader  to view my pdf files which is embedded in the HTML page and running as an activex. I need to disable the toolbar like share the content as email link /attachment  for the security reason.  I am able to find a way to hide  the Acrobat toolbar  but it is visible  by just pressing F8.
Can anyone please suggest a way to disable the toolbar permanently.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Jobin.

    Hi Bernd Alheit,
when I try to open a PDF in a browser and attaching the query string as #toolbar=0 makes the toolbar hidden. But in my case I am rendering the form using a formservice - renderPDFForm method with XDP format file as a input file. So I cant use the toolbar=0 option, since there is no url. Rather I have used the   javascript code in the form designer to hide the toolbar. app.toolbar  =false ; But this particular code is not working for acrobat reader X version. Can you please help me how to hide the tool bar.
    Thanks,

  • Printing a PDF in Adobe Reader  v8 does not print watermark

In our office we have PDFs created with Adobe Acrobat Professional version 7 that have a lighten watermark which say "confidential". These PDF documents print fine with Adobe Reader 7.0.8. Our office has now converted to Adobe Reader 8.1.1. When you open the PDF in Adobe Reader v8.1.1 the watermark displays on the screen but when you print the document the document prints without the watermark.
I have checked the knowledge base and can't find this issue. The document has no trouble printing, it just doesn't display the watermark. I have tested Adobe Reader versions 8.0, 8.1.1 and the new version 8.1.2 all display the watermark when you open the Reader, but none of them print the watermark. I have gone back and verify and the watermark does print on Adobe Reader v7.0.8.
If anyone has a similar issue or solution please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Mary Mendoza

I have the same problem. The watermark does not print out even though I can see it in the print preview. Anybody...?

  • PDF annotation with link, image doesn't show, only in print or Google Chrome, not Adobe Reader main

We are creating PDF files with annotations, we are using the O2 Solutions PDF Library for C#. We used to create PDFStampAnnotations, but now we want to make the images clickable, to navigate to the URL belonging to the image.
Therefore, we are now using PDFLinkAnnotations, with a PDFImageAppearance.
We set the flags of the annotation to Print.
However, the annotation won't show in the PDF in Adobe Reader. It does show in the Google Chrome inline PDF viewer.
It also shows in the print preview window in Adobe Reader.
But it does not show in the normal view in Adobe Reader. What we do see is, when hovering over the rectangle that should contain our image, our mouse cursor becomes a hand and a tooltip with the link is displayed. If we click, everything works as expected. But we don't see an image!
What can we do about this? This is really annoying, as I don't have a clue why it won't work. Actually, to me, this looks like a bug in Adobe Reader?

    Thank  you for your reply.
Indeed, I tried saving a PDF that had the "default appearance", it shows exactly the same. So it looks like it "can't" show the image.
However, of course, I do want the image to be shown. How can I achieve this? How can I tell Adobe Reader (and other PDF viewers) I really really realllyyyyy want to see that image there? I believe I'm not doing anything really exotic, right? There must have been tons of other people that wanted to do the same thing, I guess?

  • Adobe Reader 9.3.2 - PDF attachment won't print from right click

    Hi all,
Hopefully someone can assist some kind of suggestion, we have just rolled out Adobe Reader 9.3.2 upgrade from v8.  When we now try to print a PDF Outlook 2003 attachment from the right click menu, we are prompted with the 'Open With' window.  Selecting Adobe Reader 9.3 and press okay opens the document, but it doesn't spool.  We can print the document fine from Adobe Reader itself, any ideas?
    TIA
    Frosty

I have seen the same problem in this forum a couple of times (on Windows Vista and 7 only), but I have never seen a solution for it.
Can you try if Adobe Reader 8.2 does the same?  Download it from here http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.2/enu/AdbeRdr820_en_US.msi
If the same happens with Reader 8.2, then I have no other suggestion than to try an alternate PDF viewer.

Acrobat has NEVER been free. Reader (formerly called "Acrobat Reader") has always been free, but the Creation/Editing software has always had a price tag.

  • Cannot print PDFs in Adobe Reader 11

When I try to print a PDF using Adobe Reader 11, it says that it cannot print because no pages have been selected for print. Here's some more information:
    What I have done:
printed a PDF through a web browser. This worked fine.
saved that same PDF, reopened it in Adobe Reader, tried to print. It did not work.
opened PDFs from emails and tried to print. That did not work.
tried "Print As Image" as some forums have suggested, but I cannot because that option is greyed out.
    Computer history:
my computer had a virus 2 weeks ago. Before the virus, everything printed fine. I'm guessing that perhaps I had a different version of Adobe Reader on my computer before then, and that the newly installed one (post-virus) is the problem. But, I'm not sure.
Thanks for your help. This is so strange! If it makes a difference, I use a Brother HL-2270DW wireless printer.

    Hi Vikrantt,
The printer is a Brother HL-2270DW. It says this at the end when I look at the details on the network device page:  [008092b6bcfa]. I'm not sure what type the driver is, but I do see that the driver version is 1.9.0. How can I figure out the type?

You may want to keep Reader. You may want to select Acrobat as your default, but be able to click on a PDF (or PDF link) to open in Reader when needed. There are likely some PDFs that will not open correctly in AA 7 because of new features folks add. Just because it opens in Reader XI does not mean it is in the new format, but just that is the default opening you have. To tell the type of file, you have to open the PDF and check the properties (ctrl-D) and check Description>PDF version.
