Printing to a printer connected to a Mac through a PC?

Alright so I have been having this problem that has been going on for a few days now. Every night after I get home from school I spend hours trying to figure out how to get my Windows 7 laptop to print to my printer that is connected to my iMac.
Now, my iMac is not connected to my wireless router. My iMac is connected to my router using airport and the printer is connected to my iMac via USB.
I have installed the printer through Windows and then ran the drivers and the printer is on my computer. I go to print and in the queue all it says is "Spooling" and it stays like that for about 5, maybe 10 minutes and then disappears and nothing ever prints.
So then I installed Bonjour on my PC and ran that. It installed the printer again, but this time with a different name. I figured it would work because its an official Apple thing, and well, I assumed it would fix the problem... but it did not.
So I have tried troubleshooting, nothing works. I have printer sharing checked off on my Mac settings. I also have smb sharing for Windows computers. If it makes a difference, I can access my Windows computer as a server through my iMac to share files... don't know if that changes anything.
So yea, if anyone might know how to help me here I would greatly appreciate it. I have been struggling with this for days now and all I want is my setup to work correctly.
Thanks a lot!

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Bonjour for Windows installed on Win7 is a good start. The Bonjour Add Printer Wizard will guide you through the install. When it gets to the printer model stage, select Generic PostScript. Don't use the driver for the model of printer you have - this can cause problems. Note that even if the printer you have does not support PostScript it does not matter because the Mac will convert the incoming spool file into the appropriate format to suit the printer.
Also, you will need to ensure that you have Printer Sharing enabled on the iMac. You mentioned having it "checked off". Not sure if this was a typo but please ensure this is enabled.

Until the MacBook Air was released and supported in 10.5, the Mac did not consider USB to be a valid Networking Protocol. So set the Mac with USB solutions aside.
To connect computer-to-computer, you typically need to be using an Ethernet crossover cable. Assigning the same address to two Ethernet devices is never the solution -- it gives a Network Conflict, just as you said.
If your Windows box has some mechanism for Sharing its WiFi connection over Ethernet, you would have to follow its rules. Whether that means Manually assigning an Ethernet Address in the same range or the PC will provide the Address, I do not know.
Best success may be running an Ethernet cable to your Wired/Wireless Base Station, or using a "gaming adapter" (Ethernet-to-Wireless no drivers required) connected to the Mac's Ethernet port to give it WiFi access. What is your Base Station {Cable, DSL, FIOS, Other} ? Ethernet cables can be up to 100 meters (an American Football Field). Often the Base Station can be moved closer for more convenience.

  • HT1338 I have a canon pixma ip4300 ij printer connected to my mac G5 with an intel processor, i cannot print cd labels since i changed from the old mac OSX  processor.

I have a canon pixma ip4300 ij printer with software to print cd/dvd labels ,i origonaly had it connected to a mac with the old MAC  OSX processor, since i have changed to a mac with MOUNTAIN LION the new intel processor i cannot print the cd labels, i have downloaded software update for the printer but it still reverts back to the old software , can anyone help  thank you   Allan R

So do you have any problems using the iP4300 to print from other applications on 10.8? Just trying to get an idea of your current setup.
I ask because Easy PhotoPrint (EPP) will use your existing printer - there is no need to create a new printer. So when you open the software and select to make a Disc Label, when you get to Step 4 -  Print Settings, the software looks at your existing printer setup to check that you have a printer that will support CD/DVD printing (not all models of Canon inkjet support this).
So with regards to the problem connecting to the iP4300, is the software failing to locate a supporting printer? Can you give me a bit more info as to what is happening when you attempt to print a CD/DVD from EPP?

  • How to edit Printer Connections in GPO created through Print Management's "Deploy with Group Policy"

    Hi there,
I have used the right-click "Deploy with Group Policy" in Print Management on Windows Server 2012 to deploy a printer connection to a GPO.
When you look at the GPO Settings, the Printer Connection is visible under User Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Printer Connections -> Path: \ \ printserver\PrinterName.
However, I cannot edit or delete that Printer Connection Path, which would be necessary if I had to rename or delete the printer referenced.  If you Edit the GPO, "Printer Connections" is not available under Windows
Settings, only Scripts, Security Settings, Folder Redirection, and Policy-based QoS.
Is there a way to edit the GPO's Printer Connections that are created with "Deploy with Group Policy"?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
How do you want to edit the printer connection? Do you want to edit the path of printer connection?
Based on my test, we can’t edit the printer connection directly in GPO. We can edit the path of printer connection in printer management.
For detail steps, we can refer to the method Miles Zhang provided in the following link:
    Where is "Printer Connections set"?

  • Can't add printer connected to other mac on network

I've got a new Epson Photo Stylus R380 connected via usb to my desktop G4. That G4 is hard wired to my airport express network. I've got the printer drivers, utilities installed on the desktop G4 and the printer works just fine. Now I'd like to print from my powerbook to the Epson but I don't see it when I try to add it. I do see the HP printer that is plugged directly into the airport express. I was able to print to my previous epson color printer that was plugged into my desktop G4 so I don't know what I am missing. Please help. Do I need appletalk on or off? What other setting should I check?
    thanks.

The description of your problem sounds like you have had no other printers hanging off a usb port of this desktop G4 for awhile. Is it possible that you disabled printer sharing on your desktop G4 at some point in time in the past, a la post-Epson-color-printer? Doublecheck your desktop G4's system preferences > sharing > services and make sure that printer sharing is still checked on.
If that was indeed the problem, then on the powerbook, when you ⌘p, in the subsequent print dialog window, one of those pulldown menus should have something about "shared printers" that you can add this usb printer hanging off your G4 desktop.

  • Connecting to my Mac through PCs?

Hopefully this is the place to ask such a questiom:
I am wanting to access my Mac from lab based PCs on campus. The PCs are equipped with Remote Connection Clients. Is it possible to remote in to my Mac? Thanks!

Thanks ToeKnee! I don't mean to sound like a noob or anything here, but how exactly does one set up RealVNC to work with my Mac? I installed Remote Desktop on my Mac, and have it running under "Sharing" in the System Preferences. Now do all I have to do is install RealVNC on the Win XP box, enter in the IP location it gives me in the Mac System Preferences, and enter my password? Then I'd be all set? Thanks for your help!

  • Canon Printer mx860 not working since upgrade to Yosemite, it is connected to my Mac via usb.  Any suggestions?  Thanks. LL

My 2009 Canon MX860 Pixma printer not working since an upgrade to Yosemite on my MAC version 10.10. It is connected by USB.  Have had no previous issues with printing, scanning or faxing.  When trying to print my Calendar I only get light vertical dotted lines, none horizontal, no words and vague header colors. Checked printer image on the  on my MAC which shows the same problem.  All of the color and black cartridges are new.
The recent upgrade to the Canon application says it is completed but it is not, image on application upgrade is a circle with an X.
Any suggestions?  Could this simply be a compatibility problem?  I'd sure like to keep my Canon printer.
    Thanks,  LL

Can you open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left sidebar. If the MX is the only printer connected to the Mac then its information will be shown in the right pane. If you have more than one printer, then a list will be shown in the top right pane. Select the MX to see its information in the bottom right pane. Can you copy this information and paste back here for me to check.
Also an FYI - this is the Mavericks forum. The Yosemite forum is here

  • Windows 7 won't print pdf to network printer connected to Mac

    Hi,
I have a printer connected to my Mac and have shared the printer on my home network.  I can print documents from a Windows 7 computer on my network but when I try to print a pdf from adobe reader it will not print, or ever go to the print queue.
    Any help appreciated.

Thanks Michael, have tried that, no luck. I will wait a couple of days to see if any other solutions come up (or if anyone else is suddenly having the same issue) before reinstalling Acrobat.
[OK just tried sending a PDF attachment directly from another program (MYOB) through to Mac Mail and had the same problem so it is not an Acrobat issue afterall, it is a Mac Mail or Mac OS X issue. Will post this on the Apple site.]
I have resolved the MYOB issue, it was working just painfully slow. So I still have the original Acrobat Pro PDF to Mac Mail issue if anyone knows of any solutions please?

  • Problems printing to shared printer connected to Mac from XP Machine

I have been trying to get printer sharing set up so that a Windows XP laptop can print to the HP LaserJet 3030 connected to an old iMac running 10.4.4. I have installed bonjour for Windows on the XP machine and can successfully run the Bonjour Printer Wizard. When I go to print to the printer though it the print button is greyed out and Windows says "Before you can print, you need to select a printer." I have tried the HP 3030 PCL 6 driver as well as a Generic postscript, no luck either way. Any ideas?

I resently purchase the Laserjet 3030. I haven't been able to print consistently, sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't connect to the computer. I understand that you have this printer connected to a Mac. Could you tell me how you did it? Which driver you are you using?
Additionally, I haven'e been able to use the scanner at all. I found on the internet that the scanner is not compatible with Mac. Are you using the scanner?
    I have an old eMac G4 800Mhz running Mac os X 10.4.6

  • Can't print from Windows to Mac

I've always had trouble printing to a printer attached to my Mac from Windows. Bonjour used to see the printer, but I could only occasionally actually print. For a while everything but PDFs worked, then even text stopped. As a last resort I tried the "reset printing system" option in System Preferences and then re-added the printer, but now Bonjour doesn't see it at all. I can browse to it via SMB at \\macname\printername, but all I can do is print a test page as Administrator. Regular print jobs and non-admin test pages just disappear - not in the queue on either client or server. Setting it up as an IPP printer instead didn't help.
I'm at the end of my rope here, and any troubleshooting tips are welcome. I'm an IT guy, so technical details are very welcome: TCP ports to check for listeners on, services to look for, registry settings on the Windows end, anything.
    Details:
    Server:
    Mac OS X 10.6.2
HP Photosmart D7560 printer connected via USB using HP Photosmart driver
    Clients:
Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
All on the same LAN (wireless), no trouble with TCP/IP connectivity (can ssh into the Mac from the Windows boxes, etc). Both Windows Firewall and UAC are turned off on the Vista/7 boxes, guest access is enabled on the Mac in Sharing preferences...
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks!

I followed the instructions at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html and am having the same issue. Whether setting up manually or using Bonjour, it seems that you have to select an Apple Driver. The problem is that the Windows 7 does not provide Apple drivers. Luckily, I have an old XP installation CD so I can access the printer drivers I need, but because I already installed the printer drivers from my printers CD Windows will automatically install with that driver, not giving me the "have disk" option.
So I tried to install with Bonjour again, which allowed me to pull up the drivers from teh XP installation disk, but then gave me an error that I didn't have permissions to install the selected printer.
So I deleted the Canon driver for my printer from Windows 7 and went through the process described at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html again. This time I was able to select the Apple Color Laserwriter printer from the XP installation CD, but I got an error message saying that Windows was unable to find an appropriate driver.
At this point, after a couple hours trying to do a simple file share, which should only take 30 seconds, I'm giving up being able to print to a printer connected to a mac from my Windows 7 laptop. Now I have to open files on the mac from the network file share to print.
Mixed having both Macs and Windows machines on the same network is a recipe for a headache.

  • Printing on a non-networked USB printer connected to a networked PC

I'm having trouble printing at work (very small organisation).
They have a Lexmark laser printer connected to a PC through the USB port. In windows, they checked the "share this printer on the network" option.
Both that PC and my Mac are connected to the network via Ethernet through a single router.
Any suggestions on how I can get access to this printer at work??
    Thanks for any help.
    Marc P.
Ps: I have a printer directly on a network at home and can print no problem through IP printing (Printer has an ethernet network connection). But the printer at work has no network connection on it.

    Hi
    On the Mac:
    - Open System Preferences, go to "Print and Fax".
    - Click on the "+" icon bottom left to add a new printer
    - On the next screen, click More Printers
    - Change the top list to "Windows Printing". Change the second list to the name of your Windows workgroup (you may have to first change it to "Network Neighborhood", and then select the correct workgroup).
    - Find the name of the sharing PC in the list, and double-click on it. It should prompt you for a login. Use your login from the PC.
    - You should then see and be able to connect to the shared printer.

  • 10.6.7 upgrade messes up my Canon MX700 multi-function print connection

I have a Canon MX700 multi-function printer connected to my Mac Pro.  I have printer sharing on and enabled in the firewall and sharing preferences.  I have an iMac that connects to this printer through the Mac Pro.  It has worked fine for years like this.
I upgraded to the latest 10.6.7 software, and that also came with new Canon printer drivers a few days ago.  Now I have printer issues.
Whenever I print from either machine, a warning box appears on the Mac Pro for 5 seconds:
Do you want the application "canonijnetwork.bundle" to accept incoming network connections?
Clicking Deny may limit the application's behavior.  This setting can be changed in the Firewall pane of Security preferences>
    ( Deny )  ( Allow )
If I can click on the Allow button in those 5 seconds, then the job prints.  Otherwise, the print queue is paused -- some of the time.
If I open the print queue and pause, then resume the printer, I get the warning box again, with another chance to Allow.
This happens every time.  I went to the firewall and sharing and printer preferences and made sure that everything was allowed, but to no avail.
I power cycled the machines and printers, but no change.
I am thinking that this is a bug in the new security upgrade, or the new drivers.
Can someone else verify that this is happening to others?
Any suggestions on how to get permissions to stick?

Thanks for the reply.  I just tried that, but the problem did not go away.  I did notice that in the print queue status window, when I am printing from the same machine, says "A communication error has occurred." if I do not click the Allow button in time.
I just tried turning my firewall off, and everything went back to normal.  The canonijnetwork.bundle is listed as accepting connections.  Printer sharing is also listed as accepting connections.
So, I turn the firewall back on again, and the problem starts up again -- even though it says that all are still accepting network connections.

  • My mac air does not recognize my printer connected to a network

Is usb to lightening the correct connection to see the printer

    Hello there, Appletreflie.
The following Knowledge Base article should have some practical information for you to help setup your printer:
OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11145
    Specifically:
Add a network printer to your list of printers
You can connect to printers on your local network that use Bonjour, IP, and Open Directory, as well as shared printers and printers connected to a Time Capsule or AirPort base station.
Be sure to follow any instructions from your network administrator.
If the printer isn’t connected to your network, follow the instructions that came with the printer to unpack it, install ink or toner, add paper, and connect it to your network. If you’re connecting a printer to a Time Capsule or AirPort base station’s USB port, see this help topic:Set up a printer connected to a Time Capsule or AirPort base station
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure OS X has the latest information about printer software it can download from Apple.Usually you shouldn’t install software that came with the printer on your Mac. OS X downloads the latest printer software automatically.
Open a document to print, and then choose File > Print.
Open the Printer pop-up menu and choose your printer in the Nearby Printers section of the menu.
If you don’t see your printer, choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu.A dialog appears listing any Bonjour, IP, shared, and Open Directory printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear. If you’re asked for an administrator name and password
Select your printer when it appears in the list, and then click Add.OS X automatically uses AirPrint if your printer supports it, or it selects printer software (also called a printer driver) and downloads it from Apple if necessary.
If you don’t see your printer in the list, do one of the following:
For an IP printer, click IP in the toolbar and enter the printer’s information. For more information, see this help topic:Set up an IP printer
For a shared Windows printer, click Windows in the toolbar and enter the printer’s information. For more information, see this help topic:Connect to a printer shared by a Windows computer
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

  • Can not print from my pc using time capsule's printer, but the mac in the office will.  PC sees the network just not the printer connected to the capsule.

I can't get my pc to see the printer connected to the time capsule, it sees and connect to the network but will not see the printer.  The mac in the office see both the network and the printer connected to the capsule.

Suggest that you check to make sure that you installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2 on the PC.
Run the program and hopefully it will find your printer so you can select it and click to get things going.

  • My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

You will need to install the printer on your Mac
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location.
