Printing to a printer connected to an iMac via network from Vista PC

I have a Canon PIXMA MP610 connected to a new iMac (Leopard) via USB it works fine on the iMac. I shared the device on the iMac as instructed in the Apple help section. On my network, I have 2 Dell laptops running Vista Ultimate. I installed the lasted drivers on the Dells and was able to find the shared printer on the network and successfully add it to both Dell PCs. The pc's can see status (i.e. ready, idle, etc..) and even ink and paper status. When I try to print to the printer, the document spools in the queue, but then just disappears and nothing comes out of the printer.
Please help!

I just learned that Mac's printer is shown to network as a *PostScript printer* regardless of its type. The guide http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html (for Windows XP) tells how you have to define your printer's name. But you must select a driver for a Apple printer (b/w of color matching yours), don't use the printer's native driver (unless it is a PS printer).
There is no Apple drivers available in my Vista Premium. But fortunately PostScript is well standardized and you can select from any of PS-drivers. i took +HP Color LaserJet 4700 PS+ and now my +Epson Stylus Photo 870+ works fine!

A printer that I have connected to my iMac via usb in not showing up in printer options on my iPhone or iPad and it use to before I upgraded to 8.1. How can I fix this?

Is it an Airprint-compatible printer, and is its WiFi enabled if it is? (see: About AirPrint)
If it isn't an Airprint supported printer, then you need a 3rd party driver on your iMac to print from an iPhone. Such as Printopia. As it worked in the past you probably have such a printer driver installed; check and see if it's running.
Beyond that try restarting the printer, restarting the phone, restarting your router, and restarting your computer.

How do I set up my iPhone 4s to sync automatically to iTunes when connected to my iMac via USB?  Currently it only syncs when I manually click on sync.
Somehow I do have my 5th gen. iPod set up to sync automatically with the same iTunes / computer.  But I do not actually see a checkbox for either device.
(yes, the 'prevent devices from automatically syncing' is unchecked)

  • Printing to USB printer connected to old iMac over Network

I have old Rev B iMac running OS 9 upstairs in the office, this has a USB printer connected to it.
Downstairs I have a Mac Mini running OS 10.3.9
Both these machines are networked together via a router. This all seems to work fine, I can see the drives of both computers from either computer.
My problem though is printing. I want to be able to print from the Mac Mini to the printer attached to the old iMac. I've done all the USB printer sharing business on the OS 9 iMac, but it still doesn't appear in the printer options on the Mac Mini.
Is this possible to do? .....looking through the help topics on my Mac Mini, there was several mentions of printing from OS9 to a printer connected to an OSX machine. But I haven't found any mention of being able to go the other way.

There is a way to do this, but it isn't easy. The grim details are:
    1. set up the iMac running OS 9 as a print server using the free utility Print66
    2. set up printing from the Mac running 10.3.9 in the Printer Setup Utility, choosing IP Printing using the LPR protocol, to the IP address of the iMac. Additional hurdle - you will need to use the third-party printer driver GimpPrint if you are using anything but a Postscript language laser printer on the iMac.
This will work, but unfortunately it is not an exercise for the beginner.
Incidentally, doing it the other way around is considerably easier (printer connected to and shared by the Mac mini running OS X). See Printing to a Mac OS X shared printer from Mac OS 9 via LPD/LPR

  • HT4356 My iPad does not see my printer on the network.  The printer says it is connected and I can ping it from my pc, but the iPad does not seem to be able to find it.  I am going though an AOL supplied router, I have read this can cause issues, is this

I am trying to print from my iPad to a HP 3520 printer using AirPrint. I have connected the printer to my local wireless network and it confirms it is connected. However my iPad can not find the printer on the network when it searches for it.  I am using an AOL supplied router and have read reports that this can cause problems.  Is this the case? How do I resolve this issue?

    Hi,
That indeed can be caused by a router as Apple's AirPrint uses Bonjour to communicate with the device.
Bonjour Services relies on IP Multicasting which have to be supported by your network.
To isolate the problem, please follow the steps below to enable Wireless Direct and directly connect the iPad to your printer (which means without using the router).
Once the iPad connected to the Wireless Direct network try printing and check for any difference.
If the printer can be found via the temporary connection but not through your router that indicates lack of Multicast support or wrong configuration of your router.
In such a case be sure to contact AOL and check if the router support Multicasting, if so ensure it is enabled within your router configuration, as well ensure it have the latest firmware installed..

  • Strange Mobile device tried to connect to my iMac via Bluetooth! Should I be concerned?

I woke up this morning with a pop-up message saying that a mobile device tried to pair with my system but was rejected most likely from an incorrect password. I've always had "bluetooth" enabled. Never used it though, I have a wired mouse and keyboard. I never thought about possible threats occuring from this until now. I originally had all default settings turned on for bluetooth but no sharing enabled. I clicked off "discoverable" and turned bluetooth off altogether. My concern is that I am seeing a "T-Mobile myTouch Q" Smartphone in the list. I don't own this type of phone. I've never had a t-mobile phone or know anybody who does. I tried to "browse" the device but I get an error. I am unable to remove the device from my list.
It doesn't appear to be connect or ever have been connected to my knownledge but I would like it taken off.
Is there any way somebody can hack your iMac via a mobile device? I went on a researching rampage this morning but am unsure of what to think at this point. If bluetooth only operates up to 30 feet of range, who could possibly have wanted to connect at 4-5 am in the morning? Also, if they were paired, exacly what information can they gain from being paired via bluetooth to a mobile device?
Should I be concerned about this? I have Mac firewall enabled in stealth mode. Have Sophos installed and up to date and running. All sharing is turned off. What else can I do and how can I remove this device from the list so I can use bluetooth in the near future without any worries?
    Thanks for any help!

Bluetooth is very limited, in range (20 to 40ft on a good day)....
The Bluetooth on my wife's iPad, before I turned it off, put out a signal much further than that. Out of curiosity, I took it down to the lobby of our building, easily a hundred feet or more--just guessing--through one floor and a number of walls. It was still getting a healthy signal there. Maybe the Mac's Bluetooth isn't so powerful. Probably depends on the device being used. I know if I move my mouse not far away from the Mac the connection is quickly lost.
That is an extraordinary connection distance for BlueTooth, did you happen to investigate the data rate at that range?
This really only applies to older Blutooth devices (so should exclude an iPad)
Many USB Bluetooth adapters or "dongles" are available, some of which also include an IrDA adapter. Older (pre-2003) Bluetooth dongles, however, have limited capabilities, offering only the Bluetooth Enumerator and a less-powerful Bluetooth Radio incarnation.[citation needed] Such devices can link computers with Bluetooth with a distance of 100 meters, but they do not offer as many services as modern adapters do.[clarification needed]
The spec for Bluetooth is a bit vague but here is some general info.
But wireless is a bit like playing Roulette

  • Why won't my iPhone connect to my iMac via Bluetooth?

I tried connecting my iPhone 6 Plus to my iMac via Bluetooth. Both have latest software.
When I try to pair with the phone using my Mac it does connect after I accept it on the phone but only after 5 seconds it disconnects.
When I retry connection from either of the devices some error messages are displayed -
The iPhone says - "XYZ's iMac is not supported".
The Mac says - "Make sure network access is enabled".
I wished to use handoff but am unable to. Please help me with this.

There is no iOS/OS X supported Bluteooth pairing profile between the iPhone and Mac other than Hotspot tethering. You cannot BT pair these devices with that one exception.
See here for supported BT profiles: iOS: Supported Bluetooth profiles - Apple Support

When I replace my Vista desktop with a new one running Win 7, I no longer can print to my PSC 1315xi all-in-one from my Vista laptop.  I have downloaded the driver onto my desktop but can't see the printer on it from my laptop.
Can this be done?  the printer/scanner/copier works fine on the desktop via USB but not over my network from the laptop.

  • Connecting to a Wondows Server Network from Home

    Hello All,
I am new to MAC (OSx)and this is the first time I will be connecting my new iMAC from home to my work network (currently accessing by Windows XP). My company uses Checkpoint Secure Client in terms of connecting and authenticating on my work network and I have been successful in getting this installed and connected. Unfortunately I cannot seem to connect to my shared folders and files. I also notice that I cannot ping the work file server. Is there a specific way to setup file sharing on the work network in order for the iMAC to see shared files or am I still missing something on my iMAC setup.
I realise that this could be any number of things but any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Paul:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
You are right - there are a number of things that would affect your connectivity!
This is rather bland advice, but the first step I would take would be to contact your company IT people for help. There could be firewall settings (among other things) that may be a problem. When I was working, I had a similar problem (very different configuration from yours). In my own case, I would have never connected without my organization IT people helping me (a lot).

  • Unable to connect to iMac on network from G4

I can connect to the G4 from the iMac, but not vice versa. iMac is connected to wired network via wireless Airport Express. Aiport is connected to wire from switch which is wired to a router. I've setup sharing on the iMac. When I connect the iMac with the ethernet wire the Airport uses directly, there is no problem. I need to setup the Airport connection successfully so I can use the ethernet port to print to a wide-format digital printer in my sign business.

DSL modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] Internet router [LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port #1] Ethernet switch [Ethernet port #2] > (Ethernet cable) > G4, AND Ethernet switch [Ethernet port #3] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX > (wireless) > iMac, AND Ethernet switch [Ethernet port #4] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] powerline port > powerline port > (Ethernet cable) > PC. Oops, forgot to mention the powerlines ....this gets me to my shop downstairs and into the garage. There are two more cables going to two more pcs from the internet router also.
The switch's ports may not be exactly in that order or sequence.
I can read the PC downstairs on the G4 via the powerline, no problem. Have not seen the PC(s) on the iMac, but I may need to do a little more setup for that.
