Printing to a printer over the internet - someone please verify

My mission was to be able to print to my Home Xerox 6300N printer behind a firewall from anywhere using the internet as my connection. I used LDP as my protocol - could not seem to get anything else to work.
My Gateway is a static address using a DSL connection. I have 2 ethernet cards. 1 for the internet and 1 for the localnet.
I am running OS X 10.4.6 and have Flying Buttress as my Firewall.
I have IP share turned on.
I opened port 515 for LDP in Flying Buttress. In Flying Buttress, I allowed port 515 to point to the IP address of the printer.
From work I opened the Printer Set-up Utility and selected Add. From there I held down the Option key and clicked on More Printers at the bottom.
I was now in the Advanced section and selected LDP as my protocol.
I named the Device Name: Xerox
The Device URL would be lpd://<gateway ip address>:515
I then selected the driver for the printer and clicked Add.
So I printed from work and had my wife check the printer to see if anything happened. And YES IT DID!!!
So there you have it - I am now able to print to my Xerox. I hope this helps anyone who wants to do the same thing.
Now the next thing I need to figure out is how to print to my HP 5000N printer. Since I already used port 515 and mapped it to the Xerox, I need to figure out what port I can use for the HP printer. I guess I need to figure out what protocol the HP 5000N will accept.

OK - I will answer my own question. I just figured it out. Actually I posted this once before but since forgot how I did it and the post was archived or deleted from this forum.
Anyways, to print from my work printer over the internet to my printer in my office, I did the following...
1. In printer set-up, I selected LPD
2. In the address I entered my static IP address of my home's gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:515
where 515 is the port for LPD
3. I named the printer Home Printer
4. Set up the printer (Xerox) and selected the correct driver.
5. Made sure the port (515) was open on my gateway @ home and directed that port to the IP address of the printer. I use Flying Buttress as my firewall.

  • Printing to a Machine over the Internet

Not sure why it's so hard to find out how to do this but I can't find the information. Is there any place I can go to learn (in simple terms) how to do this?
I want to print to my Xerox Phaser 6300N which is at home from my computer at work through a Mac OS X machine I set up as my gateway using Flying Buttress Firewall software.
I have a static IP address on the gateway.
I have assigned an 192.x IP address to my printer.
I just need the missing information on how to make it work... I can open any port I need to and my ISP does not block anything from what they told me.
    Thanks
    Chris

First off, thank you for replying...
On the gateway at home, I have opened the 631 and 9100 port to point from my WAN IP address to the local (192) IP address of the same machine. I have 2 ethernet cards with filesharing turned on using Flying Buttress. So the IP address of the 2nd card is 192.168.1.1. So then from that 192.168.1.1, I had the firewall direct the connection to the 192.168.1.69 which is the printer.
I have also tried pointing the gateway IP address striaght to the printer bypassing the 192.168.1.1.
I wasn't sure what connection to open, UDP, TCP, so on a custom port config, I just said ALL.
Not sure if that answered the NAT question...
On the work side, I went to the add printer via IP address, used protocal LDP, set the IP address of my gateway with a :9100 and also tried :631
    Queue I left blank
Named it Xerox, location left blank and then selected the correct driver.
When I try and print, seems like it just says the connection is busy.
I can print to the printer via IP address (LDP) within my localnet.
    Thanks

  • Print to a printer wired to an airport extreme at home over the internet ?

Is it possible to print to a printer over the internet ? Anyone know how to do this ?

    Hi Mark Craghill-
Can you be a tad more specific? Is this printer located on your same network or physically somewhere else? Wireless or wired network? Do you know the model of the printer? What are you trying to print from?

  • Print spooler crashes whenever I try to print to Deskjet F4280 over the network.

    Greetings,
I have a nice and cheap F4280 connected to my computer via USB. My computer is running Windows XP SP3 (downgraded from Vista, had the same problem with Vista as well). I can print fine from my printer, but whenever I try to print from a laptop over the wireless network, the print spooler on my computer crashes and the F4280 doesn't do anything.
I downloaded a Microsoft tool to restart the print spooler, but when I resend the document to the printer over the netword, the spooler drashes again.
I've downloaded all the latest drivers, and attempted to run the critical patch, but an error message said I was already up to date and didn't need to install it.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Resolution/Fix:
You first need to clear out your print queue to prevent the print spooler from crashing again.
On the computer designated as the server do the following:
Stop the printer spool service by right clicking on your My Computer icon and selecting "Manage"
Expand "Services and Applications" and the click on services
Browse through the list of services and find "Printer Spooler".
Right click on the "Print Spooler" service and select "Stop" if Stop is grayed out or disabled and "Start" is an available option, then the service is already stopped.
    Go to the c:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers folder
You should see some files in this directory with a .SHD file extension or a .SPL extension you will want to delete these. In some cases you may see other files in this directory as well, and in general it is safe to delete them. Files besides the .SHD and .SPL should be backed up before you delete them to be safe.
You may either reboot the computer or Start the "Print Spooler" service manually.
Once your print spool is clear you can now proceed with the following on the server computer:
Click on Start then control panel, and then Printer and Faxes
Right click on the HP Deskjet F4280 printer and select Properties
    Click on the Advanced tab
    Uncheck "Enable advanced printing features"
    Click the OK button
You should now be able to print fine from any computer on the network

  • I just bought iWorks Serial Number Key over the internet. When I use the key, iWorks tells me the key is invalid!! Please help. (I bought this iWorks from someone in Singapore. I am using it in Malaysia)

I just bought iWorks Serial Number Key over the internet. When I use the key, iWorks keep telling me the key is invalid!! Please help. (I bought this iWorks from someone in Singapore. I am using it in Malaysia.). Thanks

Downloaded the Trial version. It still says the serial number key is invalid. On the iWork page where I am suppose to enter the serial number key, the "Go Back" button is always BOLD, but the "Continue" button remains GREY all the time. The "Continue" button remains grey even after I have completed the key entry. I have to type the "Return" key on my keyboard to force enter the key. The message I get is still "Invalid key".
I have called Apple. The first person helped by asking me to delete certain items in some Folders and it still did not work. I was then connected to a senior person, but I heard over the recording that there were 15 persons waiting on the line. I had to end the call because the wait will take too long.

  • Can someone point in the right direction for how to make a multiplayer game over the internet

    Hello,
I am looking into making a game where two people who can be in different places would log on to the app, log in and can play - i.e. they would be connected over the internet. I'm looking for a hint on what is the direction to take and which technologies.
For example is there a best practice for example if you make an app with DirectX and C++, and you use some kind of web service or something? or is it easier using C# and XNA? just looking for some pointers in the right direction. I have played around
with DirectX, far from proficient but have familiarity, I have no experience with XNA but hear it's less hardcore and easier going. I'm particularly interested in what the best way to connect over the internet.
    Thanks

What you are asking is very complicated and one of the more difficult things you can do in gaming. I'd strongly recommend you start smaller to learn and then move up to multi-player games as your skills grow.
From the multiplayer client perspective it doesn't really matter which technology you use. You can write a multiplayer game in any engine or technology that can talk to the network. Choose the client technology that you are most adept at and interested in
and learn it. You can go straight to DX, use a third party library such as Monogame (XNA isn't supported for Windows Store apps), or a complete game engine such as Unity. Once you can write a decent one-player game you'll have the foundation to start on to
    build a two-player game.
At that point you'll need to define the problem much more specifically. As you state it, it is really wide open. How do you want the users to connect? Directly machine to machine? Matched through a web server but running client side? Connecting to a game
running on a remote server? Something else?
The network connection itself is probably fairly straightforward, but where to connect and how to manage that can be difficult. You'll have to decide what properties you want. Is this an action game where responsiveness is important or
a turn based game where timing is less relevant?
Are the players connecting locally or completely remotely? If the former then they can probably connect directly over the local network (NFC is great here). If the latter then they probably will need to connect to a matchmaker service to avoid firewalls.
This can get very complex, but there are existing solutions you can use rather than writing your own.

  • My HP Laserjet P1102W is used over the internet

Tonight my printer started to print. Not my work. Somebody printed over the internet.
Printer is HP Laserjet P1102W and it's connected to my WiFi and it is shared locally.
So how can it be that someone, from tens of kilometres away can accidetly print his work with my printer?
How can I secure that printer that this will never happen again.

Hi K-PAX, welcome to the HP Forums. Have you configured your printer with HP ePrint? HP ePrint will enable you to print from anywhere in the world if you have an internet connection. If you do use it, you can set your account up with restrictive printing. If you do not use it, you can probably disable Web Services. Let me know if you use HP ePrint or not. Here is a general reference document on the feature: Getting Started with ePrint

  • Time Capsule - how to gain "over-the-internet" access from Windows 7!

    Hi guys,
I've been fighting for such a long time with my Time Capsule. I have no idea how to gain access "over-the-internet" on a PC (Windows 7) which is running on  another network. My Time Capsule is set up with my Macbook Pro at home running Lion OSX, and i have internet connection. My brother who also uses Macbook has no problems connecting to my Time Capsule - through finder (connect to a server). But how do I gain "over-the-internet" access to my Time Capsule through a PC (Windows 7) from my office? Is there please someone who can guide me step-by-step, how to gain connection to my TC through a PC? Or maybe just an explantaion what has to be done on the PC before this thing can work out! This was the main reason to why i bought Time Capsule - besides of the Time Machine function. I also have an iCloud account (earlier Mobile Me), if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

There is no way to do it from windows direct to the TC.
It only presents AFP to the WAN side. And most ISP block SMB from internet access due to risks. There is AFAIK, no suitable AFP protocol utility for windows at the moment. If you google and find one, be aware it probably will not work to your satisfaction anyway.
You must use a Mac to access AFP but even then it is not a secure protocol and I would recommend against it anyway.
So basically if you had have asked before purchasing, I would have said, TC is unsuitable product. It is a backup drive for a Mac. It is not a NAS.. it is not designed for remote access by any computer other than a Mac. It does not support any other file protocol to the WAN interface.. and no secure protocol even there.
A NAS with Time Machine extensions from QNAP, Synology, Netgear all are designed for web access and are far more suitable. Researching a purchase beforehand is always worthwhile.
Anyway, your choices are.. return the TC and buy something more suited to the job.
Or if return is now impossible sell the TC on ebay.. etc and do the same thing.. buy a more suitable NAS.
Or buy a cheap mac mini (even second hand) and use that for communications with home.
Or, replace your current router with something that includes vpn. This is actually a good and commercially sound decision. VPN is generally used by business to connect to remote locations, because it is secure and will allow the greatest flexibility of connection. How hard or easy depends on the current setup. I would recommend a combined modem router with vpn server if you have adsl. Or for cable you can find plenty of routers with combined vpn. You can also use those for adsl if your ISP allows pppoe with bridged modem. The TC will have to be bridged as well. For other broadband it might be harder to find the right kind of box.
Once you setup a vpn you can access it from work using the appropiate vpn client in your work computer.

  • How do you view a friend's screen over the internet

how do you view a friend's screen over the internet, not on the same LAN?
    for 10.8.x and 10.9.x?
    thanks,
    g.

Look at LogMeIn, GoToMyPC or any other 'remote access service'.
    LogMeIn
    GoToMyPC
Apple has 'Back to my Mac' which could work well, however it is tied into iCloud & frankly makes it a real pain handling passwords to set it up.
I think the Messages application can allow you to request that someone can control the Mac via 'screen sharing' too, but I haven't tried across different OS X versions.

Is it possible to set up a jam session with a friend over the internet in Garageband on iPad?
Or is there any other way to set up a communication session where we can do a musical jam session via the internet?

Garageband has no network collaboration functions that I know of. Whether there's some other software that will do that I don't know; perhaps someone else here will have a suggestion.

  • Easy cheap way to administer a standalone iMac over the internet

I have an iMac G5 running Tiger and wish to administer and manage my father's iMac G5 also running Tiger, over the internet, rather than having to physically travel to his place everytime he has a difficuly with his system.
I will only be using this to manage 1 computer (not a network) so I simply need to be able to log into his machine as administrator and check logs, manage software versions etc.
What cost effective software solution do recommend to perform this task (I understand that Apple Remote Desktop will do this easily, but is more feature rich and expensive than what I probably need).
    Cheers
    Steve

Easily done. One way is with OSXvnc/Chicken of the Sea. OSXvnc is a small vnc server application (open source) that you'll put on your parent's machine. Chicken of the Sea is the vnc viewer app that you will put on your machine and will open every time your parents call for help. Setup is fairly straight-forward, even for someone new to the concept. These can be downloaded from versiontracker.com and macupdate.com.
Another way to do this is with the slightly more capable Vine viewer/server package from Redstone Software. Apparently just released and available for downloading and trying. The server part is simply an upgraded version of the OSXvnc app. It's free (and also available on versiontracker, etc.). The viewer part costs 19.95 through November (I think), but it is much easier to use than Chicken of the Sea and allows you to copy and paste files between machines.
    https://www.redstonesoftware.com/products/vine/viewer/index.html
One caveat: I have not tried these remotely myself -- only on the ethernet network here at home, consisting of three macs -- but I've been told they can connect distant machines as well. Try these, and if you can get any of them to work remotely, please let us (me!) know.
One option that costs more than these mostly free offerings (but considerably less than Apple Remote Desktop!) is Netopia's Timbuktu Pro 8. You'll need to buy a copy for each machine (twin-pack download for 180 dollars), but they do advertise remote connections via the Internet. They have a two-week demo that you can try before you buy. It also has some kind of Skype integration that makes for easier connections.

  • A problem was encountered while trying to send information over the Internet.

    I have CS3 - Design Premium.
I had it installed on my old computer which crashed and was reformatted. I have a new computer now and am trying to install it again but I am getting an error that says:
    Registration Unscuccessful
A Problem was encountered while trying to send information over the internet.
My internet is obviously working since this is the same computer...

I was getting the error “Registration Unsuccessful”, “A problem was encountered while trying to send information over the Internet” at start-up of "Acrobat 8 Pro" on Windows 8.1.
Setting compatibility on the .exe file to "Windows XP, Service Pack 3" didn't work for me.   The problem persisted.
I was told by someone at Adobe support (by chat) to try this, but this didn't work either:
    1. Disconnect your Internet connection by disconnecting the cable or by turning off Wi-Fi.
    2. Relaunch the Adobe application.
    3. When the registration prompt appears, select "Never Register."
    4. Connect to the Internet.
I finally made the error at start up go away as follows:
First I found that if I run the Acrobat.exe file as Administrator it doesn't give the error. (I do have to approve a user account control to do this.)  I right clicked the actual Acrobat.exe file and selected "Run as administrator".  You may be able to also right click the icon on you desktop and do the same.
While running the application as Administrator, I then tried a few things:  Clicking “Never Register”, and “Deactivating” and “Reactivating” the license, and then clicking “Never Register” again... while running the application as Administrator. Some combination of those actions seems to have cleared up the problem for when I run the application with normal privileges.
