Printing to a windows network computer

I have a macbookpro issued to me, by my college. I'm at home and i want to print to our home printer without having to email documents over, i just want to print from my laptop. the home computer is my father's pc. the printer is an epson stylus photo r220. every time i press print, it says its paused and won't ever print. i've fooled around with a few things and nothing works. is there something i have to change on the pc? or on my mac? any help would be great, this is frustrating
thank youu

A few more details would be nice regarding your 'home' setup. So first insure there is a network at home and you have logged into it. (I assume your father has a cable modem and router setup). If dad just has a modem you will not be able to network with him or the printer attached to his computer. But if all the network items are in place and you cannot print to the epson printer it is probably because you need to install the Epson print drivers on your MBP. To test this, USB attach the printer directly to your MBP and send a print job after doing the System Prefs/Printer/Add a printer thing. if you see the Epson - print to it. If it hangs (you may need to purge the print job (printer utility) or even Force Quit the print utility. Anyway, Repair permissions (Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility - repair Permissions. Then download the epson print drivers and install. go back and check Disk Utility and Verify Permissions just to be sure. Reboot, Add printer to your MBP and try printing.

  • Can't print from (only) one networked computer

We have multiple desktops and laptops in our home network. We print to a wireless-network-connected HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one printer. We are able to print from multiple computers to the printer but from one laptop we cannot. I ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor on the problem laptop; it finds the printer but when it tries to connect it says the printer is not connected. However on two other machines (both desktops as it happens) I can connect and print no problem. The problem laptop is running Windows 7.  Any thoughts on why the one laptop won't connect to the networked printer? (That laptop is connecting to the wireless network per se with no problem; I downloaded an updated Print and Scan Doctor from HP Support for example.)

    Hello Swegnson.
I understand your concerns using your Photosmart C7280. Please follow these steps to connect your printer on your Windows 7 computer:
    1) Go into your Devices and Printers, right click on your printer, and select remove device
    2) Next, Click on your Start Menu
    3) Click on the HP folder
    4) Click on the Photosmart C7280
    5) Click on add a device, then add a new printer
    6) Click on wireless and follow the instructions
(Make sure you turn off any Firewalls or Anti-Virus running on your computer.)
Please let me know at this point, if your printer is unable to connect wireless.
Once you have your printer connected, please follow this HP document on Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.
Please inform me your troubleshooting steps.
Looking forward to hear from you.

  • CUPS won't allow printing in a Windows network

I just spent five days trying to get printing working in my OSX 10.9.2 (iMac). Here's the thing: the printing network is a Windows smb network. Everything works fine on my MacBook OSX 10.9.2. I can manually install the smb://xxxx/yy printer and it works just fine there. So what's wrong with my iMac? I have no idea, but this is what happened. First I tried installing through Printers & Scanners / Advanced. And it worked fine on OSX 10.9. I used guest/guest credentials for the Windows network printer when asked.
But after upgrading to 10.9.2 it stopped working. The queue window says Ready to print and refresh or Resume does nothing. In the error log it says "ERROR: error in CUPS Filter - : Broken pipe". And also there are possibly problems with authentication.
Then I tried installing the printer through the CUPS web interface. Had weird problems with it, as it's very hard to control users and authentication. At one point I thought I had cracked it, I was able to print with my Windows network credentials. But the next print did not work anymore. I had to uninstall the printer and install again to get just one print. After trying to set users right with different sudo commands I am now at point where I can't even get one print through.
What can I try? I have done Reset many times from Printers & Scanners, no difference. What does the broken pipe mean? And how to set the printing CUPS user to what I want (it needs to be different than my OSX user or "root")?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Select
    /var/log ▹ cups ▹ error_log
from the hierarchical list on the left side of the Console window. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the time of the last failed printing attempt. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • MacBook to print on a windows network

I have proceeded with the install process to enable my mac to print to my windows network. However, when I attempt to give my username and password, nothing works. "Administrator" or my XP login will be accepted. Are there settings on the XP machine that need to be revised? Any assistance is appreciated.

The apple link I provided above has the same procedure it is: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301397 I would like to know why following the regular install method does not work for a lot of people. It will not authenticate unless you provide the IP user name and password in the advanced manual way. It is easy enough to do it manually with good instructions. The people helping need to be careful, they all seem to post the first iFelix site and do no get that it is the authentication that is messed up. I searched this site and many others and people just don't get that some of us for what ever reason have to use smb and install the user name and password manually. It almost drove me nuts. BDAqua helped me figure out the smb protocol on the networking thread.

  • Printing to a Windows Network printer after 10.4.9 upgrade

Very desperate with this. We have a couple macs at the office and after a move and some software updates all cannot print via a Windows network printer.
Unable to connect to SAMBA host is the only error we receive.
I checked my smb:\\ syntax, I have tried IP address, tried picking from the list (which by the way the printers do show up yet you cannot print to them)
Extremely frustrating and with an Anti-Mac IT director this gives him more ammo to say Macs are irrelavant in the workplace.
The Macs are bound to Windows Active Directory and the users are Active Directory users. We do not have a Mac OS X server. Our printer server is Windows 2003 SP1, the printers range from an HP LaserJet 4100 to a Xerox WorkCentre 24, all do not work.
The ONLY network printer that appears to work is the printer associated during the login
Curious if anyone with 10.4.7 and higher have problems....

  • Printer connected to Windows 7 computer remains offline despite being shared over network to imac

My new imac is connected directly to my HP printer. I am trying to connect from another room my old PC running Windows 7 also to this printer over my home network. I have the same workgroup on both computers, and have activated sharing. As far as I can see, I have followed all the standard instruction for sharing. The PC  has identified the printer and the printer has been selected, but print documents have been placed in a queue to print since it states it is offline. How do I get it back on line?

    Hello ProfA,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
You are not able to share a printer from OS X with Windows computers.  The article below explains more about sharing printers:

  • Connecting a Mac Pro to A printer on local windows network

I apologize in advance if this question has been asked/answered before. I couldn't find in forum.
I am trying to connect my MacPro to a network printer on a windows computer set up for printer sharing.
I have tried everything [all OSX help files, network setup, even purchased a printer server, etc] but nothing works. I've installed windows xp pro with boot camp and while in windows, I can use the network printer, but not from Mac OSX.
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

How about OS X System Preferences => Sharing.
You need to enable the services you want to use which will also open the ports used and unblock in the firewall.

  • Can't Print to printer attached to Windows XP Computer

Be kind, since I'm new to Mac computing. I have a Canon Pixma iP5000 printer connected to a Windows XP computer via USB. I am wirelessly connected to everything via a Linksys wireless G router. I set up the printer using the printer setup utility. When I try to print, the printer led flashes once, but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

To use any of the built-in network printing protocols on OS X, you must either have a postscript printer (postscript printers don't require a driver, just a PPD), or a driver that works with the CUPS system (a CUPS driver). So far, Brother is the only non-postscript printer manufacturer that provides CUPS drivers. For every other non-postscript printer, you need a third-party CUPS driver. Apple tried to get around this issue by including Gimp-Print drivers (open source CUPS drivers), but your model isn't in the bundled version of Gimp-Print.
For the iP5000, the only CUPS driver I know of is from www.printfab.net

  • Cannot print on printer shared by Windows Seven computer...

    Hello,
I've been experiencing recently an intricate problem:
    I have these devices:
. 1 laptop Asus with Windows Seven
. 1 laptop IBM with Windows XP Pro
    . 1 MacBook Pro OSX 10.6.2
    . 1 printer EPSON Stylus DX6050
My printer is connected in USB with my Asus (connected via ethernet on my LAN), and shared so I can launch printings from other computers.
When I try to print a document from my IBM laptop (via wifi on my LAN), it's working perfectly.
When I try to print a document from my MacBook Pro also via wifi, it's not even responding !
I tried everything, installing Bonjour on my Asus running with Seven, shutting down firewalls and antivirus, everything... still not working... I couldn't find any help on apple.support.
Please help me solve this problem !
    Thank you...

There are a number of requirements with the Windows 7 and Mac OS X setup. If one of these requirements is not met, then the printing will not be successful.
    *Windows 7 Setup*
Windows 7 introduced a new sharing feature called HomeGroup that is supposed to replace the workgroup for home networking. However, the feature only works for Windows 7 connected to other Windows 7. Therefore, if the Windows 7 computer has been configured to use HomeGroup, the first thing you need to do is detach Windows 7 from the HomeGroup.
The next setting is the network profile for Windows 7 computer. Windows 7 provides four network profiles; Home, Work, Public and Domain. Based on the network location you choose, Windows assigns a network discovery state to the network and opens the appropriate Windows firewall ports for that state. Ideally the computer should be set to the Home or Work profile. The Public profile restricts the network discovery and closes a number of ports via the internal firewall and therefore needs to be avoided for local sharing.
With the network profile selected, another setting within the profile that can hinder the discovery of the shared printer is the network discovery setting. With this setting turned off, the Windows 7 computer will not appear under the respective workgroup (or if the setting has been changed after the computer was seen by the Mac, then it can appear in the workgroup computer list but will not show any shared printer - this is most likely due to the LAN manager timing). This setting can be accessed via Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings.
Also, within the Advanced sharing settings for the Work or Home profile, another setting called Password protected sharing can stop the shared printer from appearing. With this setting turned on, the Win7 computer will still be seen when adding the Windows shared printer, but after selecting the Win7 computer, the shared printer is not displayed as no prompt is given to enter user account details. So this setting needs to be turned off. Then when the Win7 computer name is selected, a prompt will appear requesting user account information. The Guest account can be selected here to see the shared printer name.
    *Adding the Printer*
Now that you can see the printer share, the next step is to add a printer driver that will support the printing via a Windows computer. You need to be aware that some vendor drivers do not support this type of connection. In this case you need to use a CUPS based driver, such as those provided by the Gutenprint driver set included with Snow Leopard. You may need to reload your SL disc and run the Optional Installs package to get all the Gutenprint driver for your model.

  • Can't print to a windows networked Gestetner printer

I can not print to a printer on a Windows server. I am connected to the server and can see other printers on Appletalk and Bonjour.
I can see the Gestetner Dsc535 multifunction printer unders "Windows Printing" in the printer set up utility.
I get as far as setting it up and selecting the driver I downloaded for the Gestetner Dsc535 but when I print all that comes out are pages of what looks like a Hex Dump?
I seem to be able to send some sort of data to the printer but it isn't printing.
I am connected to the network through my Airport Express and can print to the HP printers in the office network by IP, Appletalk and Bonjour.
I have read on the Gestetner web page that a Fiery set up might be needed. Can i use the Fiery driver that came with the OS?
At a complete loss here as is the Admin personal (all windows I a the only Macintosh)
    Help.
    Macbook-Intel 2 Ghz 1gig RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What you call hex dump is likely postscript code. The printer has an optional postscript card - maybe you don't have that card. Manufacturers assume Mac users will buy the add-in card, so the driver downloads are always for the postscript version.
The printer is also HP-compatible (uses HPs PCL page language). You should be able to print using the generic driver "HP Laserjet 6 Series Gimp-Print," included in OS X.

  • Trying to use wireless printing on a windows 8 computer

Everything I have is Apple, and working great with my Airport Extreme.  My wife, however, has a windows 8 computer.  I sold her on the wireless printing as a reason to get the sweet new Apple Airport Extreme.
    Problem:
Research leads me to believe that I have to download and use Bonjour, which I have done.  Bonjour detects an HP printer, but cannot find the appropriate driver.  The actual printer is not supplied as a way to choose a driver.  It is only given as a series number, which doesn't match the printer (ex: Deskjet f4400 series, hers is f380).  I think everything would work just fine if I could locate the proper driver within bonjour.  Also, her computer doesn't have a disk drive to use and it prints fine while connected by usb directly.
    Hardware)))Windows 8 64-bit)))Airport Extreme)))HP F380 All-in-one.
If there is any info that I am not including please tell me and I will try to add.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

  • Printer disconects from windows networking with Client32

    Hi,
I have a printer attached to a Windows 2000 box. It is shared with windows
    networking.
I have a remote client that cannot see the shared printer while the IPX
    protocol is loadaed.
I unsintall the Novell client, remove the IPX protocol and the printer is
    there.
If I reinstall the client, the connection to the printer is lost
Any Idea what may be wrong ??
I tried installing the client only with IPX and IPX/ip and nothing works
    Thanks in advance,
    ernesto Fox

It is most likely an MS Browser issue.
How is the MS Client configured? IP? IPX? Does the network involve
    routers?
We are really moving beyond NW Issues, but I suspect that Different PCs are
becoming master browswer and generating different lists of MS Network
    resources.
While potentionally not the most efficient design, you may want to ensure
that IPX is loaded for all of the MS Clients, that the IPX frame-type if
forced on all of the PCs. etc....
Now that recommendation would be to ensure easy browsing of MS resources in
    a simple network.
If you can get your hands on some free LPD software for setting up LPR
printers on your Windows 2000 this would be very easy.
W2K ships with the ability to print to LPR but not host LPR printers. XP
    comes with both I believe.
http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?12500000037640 is a free copy or LPD
    software.
