Printing to a windows Vista shared printer.

Hello,
I have a shared Canon PIXMA MP160 attached via USB to a windows Vista box. I have tried several ways to print to this printer form my macbook. I have tried the normal 'Windows Printing' with no success. It pops up a box with user name and password, i enter it, and nothing happens(just times out). I then found a thread that recommended the following:
On the Vista PC
1. From Windows Vista Control Panel
2. Select "Programs and Features" pane
3. Click "Turn Windows Features on or off"
4. Turn on the LPD protocol.
5. Ensure printer(s) are shared
On the Mac
1. Start Applications/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility
2. Hold down the "Option" key and click the "More Printers" button
3. From the top menu select "Advanced"
4. From the "Device:" field select "LPD/LPR Host or Printer"
5. In the "Device URL:" lpd://VistaPCName/PrinterShareName
6. Click the "Add" button
This was also unsuccessful. I know the printer works as i hooked it up directly to the mac. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

You have done some good research. One more thing - the driver from Canon was written to support direct USB printing only. You need a CUPS driver to use the various protocols available in the CUPS printing system in OS X. Look for CUPS drivers for your model here:

Try Gutenprint first, but your model might not be in there.

  • MacBook with Windows Vista Shared Folders

So, my question and the problem is, that I can't seem to make my MacBook connect to a Windows Vista shared folder (Default Public folder, or any other folder). I've tried pretty much everything on the windows end. I've reset the sharing options, started from scratch, and my MacBook still can't connect to it. When I use the smb://192.168.1.199 (windows machines ip), it hangs for maybe a minute, and gives me this message: "Finder can't complete the action, because some of the data in "smb://192.168.1.199" can't be read or written (Error -36)." Sorry for the typos, but i'm translating from Finnish to English.
Also, the funniest thing is that it worked previously, a week ago to be exact, and then, one day it just stopped working. I've tried almost anything that I can think of. Every setting is the way they were, when it still worked. Does anyone of you guys here, have any idea what could be causing this anomaly?

    Hi:
till now I did a great progress, I get see the windows vista server from my MAC (even when I get change a rule in the norton filrewall) and now the windows ask for a user and password, I create a user like I have in the MAC with the same password but all the time reject the connection, look I put the wrong password but isn't
    Any idea?

  • How do i print from OSX 10.6.3 wirelessly to windows vista shared printer?

I have a canon MX700 connected via usb to a PC running Windows Vista. The printer is shared through my router and works wirelessly with all my other windows based pcs.
I can see the pc in finder on my macbook running osx 10.6.3 but i not yet found a solution to help me print from my macbook. I have researched far and wide and nothing i have tried has worked.
    Can someone please help me?

When you have a Canon inkjet shared by a Windows computer, you cannot use the Canon provided drivers. They will cause errors and give the impression that you have authentication problems.
For Windows shared connections, you need to use a driver that supports these types of network connections. Gutenprint is one such drivers set that will work and is preferred as it is free. However the MX700 is not listed as a supported model with the version of Gutenprint included with Snow Leopard and even with the latest version of Gutenprint does not support any MX series.
So you can either try one of the other Canon Gutenprint models, such as the MP150. But you may find that you spend a lot of time and waste a lot of ink and paper until you find a model that is compatible.
Therefore you could look at using PrintFab (www.printfab.net), which does list the MX700 as a supported model, but it does cost 49 Euro. There is a 30 day trial of the driver suite if you wanted to test it first to be sure it will work. If it does then you can purchase it later.

  • How can I add a shared printer USB plugged to the Time Capsule (on a windows vista PC)

Setting up an airport network was very easy, and is very intuitive and friendly working on a mac.  However, I tried to install the shared printer remotely on a windows vista PC and... well, that's a diffrent story.  Can anybody help?  Thanks!

If you have not already done so, you will need to download,  install and run Bonjour for Windows on the PC.
If you have already done this, what error messages are you receiving?

  • File & Printer Sharing with  Windows Vista

    Hi All,
I work in a small office, I'm the only mac user & I supply my own Macbook 10.5.6.
We have just had a new Samsung printer installed in the office which all PC's have been enabled for printer sharing, but I cant seem to get my Mac to pick up the Shared printer. I'm also trying to set up a folder on the main PC that I can send files to from my mac. The shared folder has been created on Windows Vista - but I'm unable to see that shared folder in finder. Could these 2 issues be related? please can someone help me make my work days just a little bit easier
    Thanks so much

I would like to add that I DO NOT want to share my laptop at all. It is my personal computer & if I can set up file sharing from my mac to the main PC on vista while still blocking any access to my computer.

  • Printer Sharing and Windows Sharing with Windows Vista

Today I tired setting up a printer sharing network over my linksys wireless router. I turned the printer sharing on and the windows sharing on my mac. Then I launched my notebook with vista on it and installed Bonjour for Windows 1.0.3. Once the installation finished I ran the wizard and installed the shared Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer.
Once I finished the wizard I gave the printer a go.
I tried printing a word document on my Vista machine using the new wireless set up and nothing happens the printer queue gains the document spools it and then it's gone. Then, I tried using Vistas Sharing set up. After setting up another printer icon (the same printer). When I go to print I get an error message.
Also when I try accessing my shared folder from my vista machine. I use my Username and password for the login. The computer responds that my Mac Mini's username and password is incorrect. Thus, I cannot fileshare between by Mac Mini and my Vista Laptop
What can I do to get my printer sharing and my windows sharing set up to work.
(also, my Epson Stylus Photo 1280 Printer is hooked up to my mac mini through USB).
    Please respond
    Thank you

  • Printing from MacBook to a printer shared through Windows Vista

    Hi Everybody,
I'm unable to print anything from my Mac laptops to my HP printer which is shared via a Windows Vista PC.
I have a wireless home network with a PC, a latest model Powerbook G4 15"/1.67 and a MacBook Core2Duo. The PC is connected to an HP PSC 2355 All-In-One printer.
When I had Windows XP SP2 installed on my main PC, I was able to print from my Mac laptops through Samba (Advanced printer, smb://guest@myIPaddress/printersharename) without any problems.
I recently upgraded my PC to Vista Ultimate (RTM Technet full version). Now, I can no longer print via my Mac laptops, since supposedly, Vista's implementation of Samba has changed. I can, however, print from my MacBook when it's running Windows XP SP2 without any problems. This leads me to believe that the sharing-side on the Vista PC is set up correctly. The XP to Vista over wireless printing obviously doesn't use Samba. The Vista share does not have a password on it.
I've installed the Foomatic/HPIJS drivers on both my MacBook and the Powerbook. These are the errors:
Powerbook: "Unable to connect to SAMBA host"
MacBook: "The process "foomatic-rip" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
I've tried all kinds of combinations for Samba, and also via the option "Windows Printing". My PC is in the same network Workgroup as the Macs, and they can see my Vista PC fine. I can also connect and share files with my Vista PC without any problems and connect through Samba using Finder (for file sharing). I cannot, however, see my shared printer through the Windows Printing dialog.
    Can anybody help me out?

  • Can't print to windows Vista printer from Mac OS 10.6.7

    Hi All,
Proud new owner of iMac 27" and have successfully managed to set up file sharing between my new Mac and current Windows Vista machine.  Windows is attached to a Belkin 54g wireless router.  A Canon MP960 is attached to the Windows machine via USB.  The Mac is working with the network via Airport.
Problem is that I can't see the printer from the Mac.  I have tried manually setting up the printer to be shared with the Mac via:
Mac OS X v10.5 or later
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
Click the + button to add a printer.
Press the Control key while clicking the "Default" icon (or any other icon on the toolbar), then choose Customize Toolbar from the contextual menu that appears.
Drag the Advanced (gear) icon to the toolbar.
    Click Done.
Click the Advanced icon that was added to the toolbar.
Choose Windows from the Type pop-up menu.
In the URL field, type the printer's address in one of the following formats:
    smb://workgroup/server/sharename
    smb://server/sharename
Note: "workgroup" is the name of the Windows workgroup that the computer sharing the printer belongs to. "server" is the name of the computer sharing the printer (or its IP address). "sharename" is the shared Windows printer's share name. If the share name contains spaces, replace each space with "%20" (without quotation marks).
Tip: You don't need a "workgroup" when specifying the IP address of the computer (such as when the printer is on a different subnet), or if your Mac belongs to the same Windows (SMB) workgroup.
In the Name field, type the name you would like to use for this printer in Mac OS X.
Choose the appropriate PPD or printer driver from the "Print Using" pop-up menu.
    Click Add
I have also allowed printer sharing on the windows machine.  I still can't print!
Can anyone please help?  Are there some settings I could have missed?

I have the same setup but with a Canon MX850.  This did not fix my problem.

  • Error -  Printing from Windows Vista to OS 10.5.3

I have an HP Photosmart C3100 printer connected to my iMac by USB, and shared over a wireless network. I have no problems printing from my MacBook to this printer, but when I try to print from a Dell XPS with Windows Vista installed, I receive an error that it was unable to connect to the printer because access was denied.
When I first set up this shared printer on the XPS, I printed a page off the internet to test and it printed fine. Then I restarted the XPS and I can no longer print.

My printer is connected to my Desktop(Windows Vista) via USB and I want to share it to My Macbook(Mac OSX Lion) so that I can print documents wirelessly through my Macbook.

  • Printing From iBook To Printer on a Vista, Can't see Vista shared printers

Printing From iBook To Printer on Windows Vista Desktop, Can't see shared printer on a Vista machine from a Mac, although Windows notebooks find it immediately. When same machine is booted into XP the priners share perfectly with both of my iBooks, but when the same machine is booted into Vista with the printer shared etc, the iBooks don't see the printer. Other Windows machines on the newtork do see the shared printers in Vista.
I have previously always had success sharing printers on Windows XP machines with my iBooks. . However upon installing Vista on my desktop I find I can no longer find the printer in the Mac's printer setup utility. When I dual boot back to XP everything works fine, but on the same machine when I boot into Vista I am unble to see the printers. The Mac printer setup utility finds the Vista machine on the network, but the printers are never visible. Is their some secret or channge in Vista that prevents Mac's running , in my case,Tiger 10.4.8 from seeing a shared printer on a computer running Vista
On the Vista machine, if I boot into XP The printer is shared and Windows notebooks can print to it, but neither of my iBooks can see the Printers when Vista is running.

  • Printing to Windows 7 Shared printer???

Ok, so I just tried every one of the convoluted ways I can think of to get a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.11 to Print to a printer shared by a Dell PC running Windows 7... NOTHING WORKED!!! 3 hours down the drain... :'(
I got file sharing working just fine, but nothing I did would allow the Mac to see the shared printer...
Is Tiger (10.4.11) too old to see a Windows 7 shared printer???
    HELP!!!!

I'm struggling with the same thing, myself. The Snow Leopard and Windows 7 machines are right as rain, and I can print without problem. (Did turn off Homegroup, as I read somewhere that this is only useful if all the machines in the environment are Windows 7.) The Tiger machine, though... it can see the computer and connect to the shared drive, but it does not see the printer.
The document given above is for 10.5, it's 10.4.11. However, I found this article on the same site (see below), printing between 10.4.11 and Vista (not Windows 7), and I'm gonna give it a whirl tomorrow. I don't think for Windows 7 that SMB has to be specifically enabled, because again, no issues from the Snow Leopard machine in that regard. What caught my attention specifically is in this article on this page, enabling Line Printer Daemon (LPD).

I'll report back with whether or not this worked.

  • How to share an usb-connected Windows Vista Printer with a Mac Mini

    Hi,
I own a laptop Sony with Windows Vista (64) which has a printer connected via USB. I recently purchased a MAC MINI (middle model) and wanted to use my laptops printer for printing from my Mac mini. is this possible? thanks. Mx

    Hey there Max,
If you can’t find the printer in the network browser, it may be easier to add the printer manually using the URL field, as shown in the article below.

  • My hp deskjet 1510 series does not print when connected to my hplap top (windows Vista),

My hp deskjet 1510 series does not print when connected to my hp lap top (windows Vista), it says the printer is not active, although it is default printer, connected and on. However, it does work when connected to the (also HP) lap top (windows 8) of my husband.  I did everything the hp print and scan doctor advised and also what I could find at HP support (like switch of fire walls, reinstall everything, check printpooler ec etc)... it still does nothing except that I managed to print a diagnostic print which should give information about the condition,  but it only gives numbers and letters like : 11. SN = [Edited for Personal Information] Yr  12 PER = 05YR etc, that does not really help me :-). It won't print any testpages.  H E L P!!!

    Hello Elisabeeth,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're unable to print using the Deskjet 1510. I will do my best to assist you! When you reinstall the HP software, did the installation state it was complete?
I would start off by following this HP document on 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Will Not Print. From this document, please make sure you check the connection type and the ports.
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Can't print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion

    Dear all,
I would like to share my experience battling to figure out how to print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion. Myself had this problem and looking throughly in internet without success. But finally I figured out the solution by myself, hope this can help other Mac user with similar problem.
OK, when I try to setup my new MacBook Pro with OS Lion to connect with my Canon MX308 printer attached to desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate,
    1. I simply select System Preferences>Print & Scan.
    2. Then looks for the + sign just below the box to add a new printer.
    3. From the option toolbar above, I select Windows. I have connect this MacBook with my Windows Network, so the workgroup will appear to the left column.
    4. After I select this group, the computer list will appear in the middle column
    5. Then after I select the computer which my printer connected to, my printer sharename will appear in the right column
    6. Last step is to select the printer I want to use.
    7. After that it will automatically put your printer sharename to the "Name". And then I select my printer driver at "Print Using" and find my printer manufacturer which is Canon MX300 series from driver lists. Finish!
My printer appear in the Printers List. But the problem is everytime I try to print there will be error message saying "ON HOLD Authentication Required".
This problem start to kill me, I search all around for similar problem, but the solution was never worked for me!
Until just now I figured out accidentally for the solution.
THE PROBLEM LIES ON MY PRINTER DRIVER!!!! Although I have downloaded the most update driver from Apple site and Apple Software update said there is no more update for my system!
The solution for my problem is Gutenprint Printer Driver! You can download this driver at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php, then select for the latest driver gutenprint-5.2.7.dmg. Install this driver!
Then back to Print & Scan in System Preferences, then right click on Printers List box, then choose "Reset Printing System..." to clear the previous failed printers.
After that, repeat the above step 2 - 7. Only for the last step I need to select the Printer Driver for my Canon MX308 for the driver name : "Canon PIXMA MX300 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7"
Now I can sleep as a baby knowing that my printer make a friend with my new Macbook Pro! Hope this will help others!

I have the same setup but with a Canon MX850.  This did not fix my problem.

  • How can I print emails without losing the right side of message Windows Vista 6.0 Photosmart C6830

When I print email messages, right side of message lines do not print (run out of space) on a Photosmart C6830 using Windows Vista Home Version 6.0.  Have tried highlighting message to print & choosing (selection) in print window - does not solve problem.

The print spooler is a windows service and is required to print. I would hazard a guess you can not print with any application.
What I am saying is I think your windows instalation has a problem, not Thunderbird.
