Printing to CD & DVD

I have a Canon IP5200 which can print direct to CD & DVD's.
My current DVD's (Verbatim) have a printable area that goes in to about 21mm and I'd like to print that far if possible.
Is there a way to work round the minimum inner circle size of 33mm?
I guess it can be done with a bit of fiddling in Photoshop, but I'm concerned that I'll end up with ink spraying everywhere.

I've only used the Canon software that comes with the Canon printers.. using that, you can modify the printable area. It's a workaround, but it works.

Hook it up and see if it works. If it is one of the more common printer brands/models, it could very well have it's drivers installed, depending on how your OS was installed. If not, you can always go to the support site for your printer and download the drivers, if necessary.
What kind of printer do you have? What OS and how was it installed?

You're very much right. There are several different companies that make software that allows you to print directly to the CD/DVD. The link below will take you to a list of those software packages. Hope that helps.

  • Best practices for printing on a DVD?

I have Taiyo Yuden printable white (inkjet) DVDs and an Epson R280 - getting ready to try printing on the DVDs and was wondering any best practices?
    - Print on the DVD before burning or after?
    - Should I use the Epson software or is there an outside program that is better?
    - Any other tips?
    Thanks!

    Hi Deborah -
Welcome! As Eric says above, never put labels on your DVDs. In many cases, the adhesive can eventually cause problems and irrevocably damage the disc.
So, going with "labeling" as in putting information on the disc about what it contains, these days, a regular consumer can actually just use an inkjet printer that offers the ability (usually a special tray). I have an Epson Stylus Photo R280 (and there are other Epson models), there are several HPs and a few Canons. My printer was actually free with a digital camera from Circuit City but would have retailed for $149 at the time, so they aren't really all that expensive. Just search for printers with that function and you'll find all your choices.
Then you want to buy inkjet-printable DVDs or CDs and you're off (and there are a bunch of options there - I found it easier to order online to get a good quality, long-lasting DVD that is inkjet printable - the supplies at the local office stores were not good)! Usually your printer comes with software to do the design/print but then Old Toad has a great recommendation above.
I'm printing with a new "watershield" DVD from Taiyo Yuden (which is known for it's quality and are long-lasting, up to 75 years, not that we'll be on DVD players then!) which makes an inkjet print "unsmudgeable." There are a few other brands like that or some people use a spray on them because the downside to inkjet is that it can smudge if you touch with moist fingers or if anything wet touches it. Water shield DVDs are magical, I've found - makes a glossy print (even though inkjet) and locks in the design so it's smudgeproof. Still they are more expensive than others. I'd probably search around the forum here or other forums on DVDs and CDs if you want to look into them more.
    Good luck!

p.s. I was told that if you absolutely can't print on them, then to use a thin Sharpie with minimal writing on the DVD. I think some stores sell "DVD safe" pens but I've never been convinced that they are anything but a sharpie at a premium price - maybe someone else on here will know.

  • C5280 Print to CD/DVD

I have a Photosmart C5280. It used to print directly to CD/DVD with WinXP. Now under Win7 it says to pick a printer that supports printing to CD/DVD. It says that this is not supported. Also, I don't know if this is a clue, it says that it is a C5200 series, not a C5280.
I have installed, uninstalled, unplugged, turned off and reset in every way I can think of.

When uninstalling follow this article to ensure everything is removed:

This is very important as you do not want there to be any information left or registry left that may have been corrupted due to unknown reasons.

Are you tyring to write your photo files to a DVD ?
Or are you trying to print to a paper label on a DVD disc?
Also, I suggest that you describe the process that you are attempting (like which menu commands or buttons you used).

  • Since upgrading to lion and updating HP software my printer (photosmart D5160) will not print to CD/DVD when I try it says my printer doesn't support CD printing. any help will be welcome

Since upgrading to lion and updating HP software my printer ( HP photosmart D5160 driver 3.3.0) will not print to CD/DVD,when I try it says "your printer does not support CD printing". any help will be welcome.

I see those are old posts above but I'm just now having the same problems. I have the original software CD that came with my Photosmart D5160 printer but I can't load it. I get the message "You can't open the application "HP Installer" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported". So I don't have that going for me, which is not nice! But I couldn't really care less about that if I can just find a CD labeler software that will print from my Mac to the D5160. I'd rather by new CD labeler software than a new printer. I've tried a few free CD labeler software downloads, including iWinSoft Label Maker, but nothing has worked so far. I think there's an answer somewhere; I'm able to print documents on regular paper using this printer, but I only bought it (many years ago) to print CD labels and some pictures. It's been used only sparingly and it's been in storage since I bought my Mac 3 years ago, mainly because a I got a free printer with my purchase. Any help is vertainly appreciated!!!

  • All-in-one that prints to cd/dvd

Hello, is there a printer/copier/scanner /fax that prints to cd/dvd? I've googled around and I can't come up with a HP product. I hope this is in the correct forum. Thanks

It's good to know that you're planning to stick with HP. the C309a is a pretty new printer with all the features you can think of. It has the potential to become my favourite printer, and so far havent heard of any major problems with it. So i hope you have the same experience with this printer.

  • Alignment problems printing direct to DVD with Epson R220

I know this question isn't specifically related to iDVD but I wondered if someone could help please?
I recently bought an Epson R220 printer to print direct to DVDs created with iDVD as I know labels stuck onto DVDs are best avoided.
However, using both the bundled Epson Print CD software and 'disclabel', I find the print is about 1cm off centre. I'm really surprised by this, as I thought these machines would just work out of the box - detecting through the software where the centre of the DVD is? I've tried everything to remedy this (including the position adjustment within Print CD which allows up to 5mm fine-tuning). The problem is I need more than fine tuning - the print is way off!
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has an R200 or R220 and might have had a similar problem as I've spoken to Windows users with the same printer, who report no such hassle.
    Many thanks,

Thanks Hardy - really appreciate the links to the Epson site. I've tried using the manual settings as you suggest, and I've certainly witnessed a vast improvement. Basically, it seems that if I alter the position adjustment slightly and then opt for a manual print, the disc is centred no problem. It isn't quite up to the edge of the disc - there's about a 2mm gap, using one of the templates from the Print CD app. Have you noticed this also - or does the image print right up tight against the edge of the disc?
If I go back and opt to just 'Print' from the first menu that appears after selecting File>Print, (i.e. not using Manual to print) the image is consistently about 15mm off centre - I've tried this on a dozen tests. However, using 'Manual Print' this isn't the case. I wonder if there is a glitch here in the latest edition of EPSON Print CD (V1.4), in that you seem unable to specify 'Page Set Up'?
I've also gone back to the excellent disclabel application. Here I find that if I change the 90% default under page set up, to 100%, the disc is also aligned correctly.
Thanks very much Hardy for taking the time to work through this one with me - much appreciated.

  • Printing directly on dvd

I'm using HP All-In-One C309a printer running Wndows  64 bit.  I'm trying to print directly on DVD with Cyberlink LabelMaker app.  It prints but quite significantly off center.  Is there a template or work-around for this printer.  Thank you.

I have actually found CD-LabelPrint to be quite a simple and versatile piece of software considering it comes standard with Canon products and most importantly it is the only way to print to CD's on the printer.
What exactly don't you like about it ?

  • Printer for printing directly onto dvd's

Can anyone provide recommendations on a printer that will print directly onto dvd's and is compatible with the macbook pro? Best Buy recommended a cannon for $100 and he said it is wireless and compatible. Thoughts?

To be a little clearer, your printer may accept the disk for printing, but the page size will still be a paper size, rather than something that says "DVD" or "CD". The documentation for your printer should tell you what the settings should be, and how to adjust the placement of the image so it is centered on the disk.

  • Photosmart Premium C309a. I want to print on CD/DVD without using the templates provided

In the templates included in the drivers/software, there are only a few variations to use. I want to design the print-layout myself, (a blank CD/DVD), but have so far not found any way to do that. Does anyone know how to do it

    Hi excolprof,
We only support disc printing with the supplied Easy Photo Print and My Image Garden software.  You are welcome to try using third party programs, but as they are not supported, the only steps I can recommend would be to make sure that hte paper size is set to CD Disc within the software.

  • Can anyone print photos from dvd created with imac?

    hi,
If I burn 400 JPEG photos in a dvd using iMac, can any one be able to print those JPEG's?

If you create slideshows of the photos in iDVD via the "+" button:
and burn a video DVD disc the only possible copy anyone could get would be a screen shot of the DVD playing on a computer and that would be a small, low resolution (~72 dpi) image that would not be much good for printing anything other and a very small copy.
Create slideshows of 95 slides or less by importing the photos into an iDVD slideshow.  Before importing crop the photos to the 4:3 size ratio that iDVD uses.  You can create multiple slideshows in one iDVD project:
If you create slideshows in iDVD from still photos the viewer will be able to advance forward and backward one slide at a time with the Forward and Back buttons on the DVD player's remote tool.
If you create a movie of the photos and add that the only option is to fast forward or fast backward in the resulting movie.
In addition, follow the workflow below to help assure the best qualtiy product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
