Printing to older printer - elusive

We have an established printer set up - LaserJet 5MP connected to an Ethernet switch using a print server. The MacBook Pro (OS 10.7) sees the printer fine and reliably sends print jobs to it. Our 2nd laptop, MacBook Air, also OS 10.7, cannot find this printer. For the Air, I have specified the printer from the pulldown list of drivers, and watched as it downloaded the specific LaserJet 5MP driver - so all should be good there.
The problem is elusive. The local Genius Bar yesterday thought to reset the printing system (contextual menu, Print & Scan window), and then overwrite the following folder contents : Library > Printers > hp by copying them from the MBP to the Air. This has not made any change to the situation. (of course, they did not have access to the printer in situ).
What could I be overlooking here? I am starting to wonder if there might be software settings elsewhere in the MB Air that I need to take account of, outside of the Print & Scan panel. Could it be a network-type setting that needs to change?
Printer issues are the toughest!
Grant.

That printer is too old to support Bonjour, so it will not be recognized automatically. You also need to set an IP address for the printer, the gateway address of your router, and the network mask. This is done via the printer's front panel. To add the printer requires configuring it in the Printer Setup Utility as an LPR printer. You will need to enter the IP address of the printer and an optional queue name of your choice (not more than 11 alpha-numeric characters plus the underline. No spaces.)
The IP address you choose for the printer should be one that is within the DHCP range of your router (for example, 192.168.0.2-199 or 10.0.1.2-199.) Preferable to choose an address somewhere in the middle that isn't likely to be used by the router for any other devices.

  • How Can I Share Printer with 2 Older Macs?

I would appreciate detailed guidance on how to set up printer sharing for two older Macs - assuming that this is even possible in this case. I have the following Macs that work very well independently as well as through a router for internet access.
    1. MacMini, 1.5 GHz, Bluetooth+Airport Extreme (approx. 3 yrs old) running OS X 10.5.2 and using Airport for internet access.
    2. Power Mac G4, 466 MHz (approx. 7 yrs old) running OS X 10.3.9 and connected directly to the router for internet access.
An HP Deskjet 5940 printer was used exclusively with the MacMini, and a Lexmarl Z53 was used exclusively with the G4. The Z53 just reached the end of its life, and thus I disconnected the 5940 from the MacMini and connected it to the G4 where it now works fine.
In spite of all attempts with various settings at each Mac, I have not been able to get any printing done from the MacMini. What detailed settings/connections do I need to make so that I can use that 5940 printer from the MacMini?
    Thanks for your response.

  • Why can't I print a playlist of 24 songs with this newer version that will fit on a case, as I was able to do with the older version?

With the older version I was able to print a playlist of 24 songs that would fit on a case.  The print was single-spaced on the older version, but on this version, the print is double spaced and it no longer fits on a case.  Does anyone have an answer?

No other solution at this time. Are you using iPad or iPhone?
iPad - I can understand why you ask. It's too bad you can't sync PDF playlist. Right now the only way is to use Sugarsync. From there you can "Open PDF in iBooks". Or you can use Goodreader.
iPhone - Why would you want to use iTunes and iBooks? Although iBooks is well designed and handles PDF very well even on iPhone, it doesn't have text-reflow feature which makes PDF reading useless on iPhone unless you want to loose your eye sight soon. So the only way is to sync a folder using Sugarsync.  You can access Sugarsync from Goodreader.

  • I'm trying to use my older Acrobat 4 for printing files from an older Macintosh with system 9, so that I can store and use the pdf documents in a newer MacBook Air, with OSX 10.9.  Acrobat 4 worked previously but no longer works.  Any way to fix it?

I am trying to transfer older files from a Mac PowerBook G4, running system 9, printing those documents as pdf, using Acrobat 4.  Then those pdf documents will transfer to my newer MacBook Air, running OSX 10, allowing me to store and use them.  My problem is that Acrobat 4 no longer seems to work on the old Mac, and I don't know how to fix it.  Can anyone give me some suggestions?

You never know, someone might remember. What happens in detail when you try to use it, and HOW are you trying to use it?

  • I can't add an older airport express to OS 10.7.5? Want to use for wireless printing and iTunes.

I'm using an Airport Extreme model A 1301 for my home's wireless network. I have three of the older Airport Express model A1084, which I was using for remote speakers for iTunes and for a wireless printer set up, but discontinued using them at some point. I currently have OS 10.7.5, and I could have sworn I was using that OS the last time I used the A1084s, but maybe I updated to it afterwards, I can't remember. At any rate, I've plugged one of the units in, look for it in Airport Utility, and get a message "this version of airPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use airPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support." I go there, download the program, install it, and get a message "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." Am I in a catch-22 here - am I not able to use the older A1084s because I need airPort Utility 5.6, but I can't use airPort Utility 5.6 because I have OS 10.7.5? Does this mean I may as well throw these older A1084s away?

If you have not already done so, I suggest that your start over on the AirPort Expess "from scratch" by performing a Factory Default Reset and then attempt to configure it to join the network again.
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
If you have an older Express, make sure that you are not trying to configure it to connect to the 5 GHz network, as it is unable to do so.
Assuming that the name of the wireless network, wireless security setting and password on the Express match up with the AirPort Extreme, the Express should "join" the network if it is working correctly.
If you are still having problems, all that you really can do is try the default reset a few more times. If still no luck, the Express....which is at least 5-6 years old or older, may likely need to be replaced with a new model.

  • Printing concerning an older HP LaserJet 5000.

We're a design studio with 4 Mac's and have this HP printer for a longtime and love it. A real work horse and low maintenance. Two of our cpu's are running Mavericks, 2 are running 10.7.5 and the older one is still running 10.5.8. This older 10.5.8 cpu has always worked flawlessly with this printer. IT'S ALWAYS CONNECTED to the printer. But my 10.7.5. CPU, my Mavericks iMac and Mavericks MacPro cannot print to this printer UNLESS I have the older 10.5.8 cpu awake and running. If I shut this older cpu down or put it to sleep, all the other computers can print to this printer. This older mac is going to be retired soon so I have to find a way that the remaining 4 CPU''s can connect to the Airport Extreme (which they do now) but can also see the printer and I can actually print from it. I've downloaded the latest HP driver software here at apple that was suppose to fix this but nothing.
    Need som help here please.

Make absolutely certain of the IP address. If you can ping that address (use Terminal - see below) then concentrate on getting the correct driver installed.
If the address of the printer is 10.0.1.100 (for example) you will receive results such as this
    iMac4:Users john$ ping 10.0.1.100
    PING 10.0.1.100 (10.0.1.100): 56 data bytes

    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.529/1.655/1.738/0.069 ms
    iMac4:Users john$
If the printer is not being recognized on your network the ping results will resemble this
    iMac4:Users john$ ping 10.0.1.101
    PING 10.0.1.101 (10.0.1.101): 56 data bytes

  • Unable to Delete Older Printing Presets -- Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless Printer with OSX v10.6.4

I find that, after upgrading to the latest Officejet Pro 8000 A809 (989005) printer driver, I am not able to delete Presets that were created with earlier versions of the Apple/HP supplied printer driver.  I am using OSX v10.6.4 and v2.0.3 of the HP Printer Driver.
When I try to print from an application the Presets that had been previously created appear on the menu, but 'Delete" is not available as an option for any of those older Presets.
If I create a new Preset, it appears in a section of the menu listing below the Presets created by earlier versions, and the Delete option is available to remove any Presets made with v2.0.3 of the driver.
I would like to delete the earlier Presets, since are no longer necessary given the changes that have been introduced in the latest versions of the HP printer driver.

If you have HP software for pre-10.6 Snow Leopard, you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option.  Also, you do not need the hp software at all - both print and scan drivers are built into the OS.  I'd recommend uninstalling, but make sure to do it this way:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Now, run a Software Update.
Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.
You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.

  • Is it possible to use an older model Dell printer (wired) with a HP wireless laptop?

I am using an HP Pavillion laptop computer with Windows 7 at home. I am connected to a wireless printer (Canon 3 in 1). I have to leave town & go to my aunt's house in another city. She has no computer setup at her house, but we have wireless router there so I can use my laptop.
Can I take my old Dell printer (which I used when I had a desktop), plug it into my laptop (I assume I'll have to also install printer) & use it there (without it being wireless, etc.?). The ink should still be viable but it has been several months since I've used it. I need to know if it would be worthwhile to take my old printer with me & be able to set it up & use it. If so, is it possible to use a laptop (I use wireless at my aunt's house) with a hard-wired printer? And would it be hard to set up?
Bottom line is, I'm selling stuff on Ebay this week, I have to make an emergency trip to help family, & will probably have to lug items (and print out shipping labels) while I'm there. I thought it might be useful to have in the long run a printer (albeit an older model) that I can use while helping out family in another city.
I'm sure I'm leaving out some info but if you think you need more to answer my question, let me know.... thank you in advance.

If I read this right, you can install your wired printer right now and test it out.  Then go on your trip and just plug in back into your computer and it will work just fine.

  • Is there any way to print wirelessly using Airport Extreme with an older printer (HP Laserjet 2100 TN) - no USB connection.

I have an older printer and currently use a Cisco wireless router with Network Magic software which allows me to leave my 30 pin printer connected to the desktop computer and share the printer with everything on the network. Does the Airport Extreme allow for this? I am just connecting one that I purchased but can only find documentation on connecting the printer via USB (which my old printer does not have). The printer is late 90's vintage, but its comercial grade and is still one of the best printers I have used so I want to keep it going for now.

I don't really know much about anything BUT with that said, I have PCs, I have an old commerical work horse HP laser printer that works with the Airport Express as a print server through my wireless router.  But having problems with my wireless router, never my AE, now how to change from WEP to WPA etc.for a new wireless router.  Maybe I need to look into the Extreme.  Good luck

  • Where to Download an Older Version for Printer Driver?

I just purchased a used Mac Mini that has an older operating system, 10.4.11.
The latest printer drivers available for download do not support this operating system- only available for 10.5 or higher.
Upgrading my OS is not an option (I don't have enough memory- only 512MB - but need 5GBs). Using the printer driver disk that came with the printer is not an option as the optical scanner in the Mac Mini does not work.
So, I need to find out how / where I can download the printer driver v4.4 for Kodak All-In-One Printer ESP C315- it is not available on the Kodak website. (They do have some Firmware update for that printer for my os, but you have to have the printer driver installed first)
Does anyone know of a place on the web that hold older printer driver downloads?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Contact Kodak tech support and see if they can provide a driver for you.
Have you tried drivers that came with OS X? Even though they may be for Leopard does not mean they won't work with your printer just because you are running Tiger. Does Tiger have a printer driver for it? OS X has a rather large number of printer drivers included.
    Is this what you need?
