Printing to USB printer from DOS

I have been told that I can print from a DOS or Windows 2000/XP
workstation to a USB printer attached to a Windows workstation. The
program I am running is Accpac Plus DOS based version which is loaded on
the Novell Server. Accpac has older version HP print drivers, from what I
understand the USB printer somehow emulates the older print driver.
I am currently printing to a Canon BJC265SP printer connected by LPT1 to a
workstation, I would prefer to update to a later printer, but need to keep
the current version of Accpac and Novell.
I have Novell 4.11 SP9
The Novell tech I use does not know if this can be done. All help would be
appreciated.
Thanks

If you're able to put the printer in NDS you can route the jobs through a
queued object then to a NDPS object. This is done by configuring the pc
to print to a queue based printer, then with the same physical printer's
NDPS object add the queue name in the "Service Jobs From NetWare Queues"
field found under Jobs button - Spooling Configuration.
This allows older DOS apps to use the NDPS object.
Hope this helps.

  • Is there a difference between AirPrint and printing via usb printer plugged into an airport extreme?

My printer does not show up in the add a printer option on my iMac when plugged into the extreme. I have a HP officejet 5610 All-in-One. I want to be able to print wirelessly using my Airport Extreme.  Thank you

Is there a difference between AirPrint and printing via usb printer plugged into an AirPort Exreme?
    Big difference.
AirPrint for one will not work via USB, so you will not be able to print from an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad using this type of connection unless you look at additional software....that may or may not allow this option.
Assuming that you get the All-in-One setup using the USB port on the AirPort.......only printing is supported.
You will not be able to use any other advanced features like maintenance, scan, copy, fax, etc when the device is connected to the USB port on an AirPort.
If you plan to use the HP for other things, I would strongly recommend that you connect it to your computer.
My printer does not show up in the add a printer option on my iMac when plugged into the extreme.
This usually indicates that your printer model is not supported. Check with HP Support to see if they have any updated Macintosh drivers for the 5610 that you could download and install that might allow this.

  • Printing to USB printer connected to old iMac over Network

I have old Rev B iMac running OS 9 upstairs in the office, this has a USB printer connected to it.
Downstairs I have a Mac Mini running OS 10.3.9
Both these machines are networked together via a router. This all seems to work fine, I can see the drives of both computers from either computer.
My problem though is printing. I want to be able to print from the Mac Mini to the printer attached to the old iMac. I've done all the USB printer sharing business on the OS 9 iMac, but it still doesn't appear in the printer options on the Mac Mini.
Is this possible to do? .....looking through the help topics on my Mac Mini, there was several mentions of printing from OS9 to a printer connected to an OSX machine. But I haven't found any mention of being able to go the other way.

There is a way to do this, but it isn't easy. The grim details are:
    1. set up the iMac running OS 9 as a print server using the free utility Print66
    2. set up printing from the Mac running 10.3.9 in the Printer Setup Utility, choosing IP Printing using the LPR protocol, to the IP address of the iMac. Additional hurdle - you will need to use the third-party printer driver GimpPrint if you are using anything but a Postscript language laser printer on the iMac.
This will work, but unfortunately it is not an exercise for the beginner.
Incidentally, doing it the other way around is considerably easier (printer connected to and shared by the Mac mini running OS X). See Printing to a Mac OS X shared printer from Mac OS 9 via LPD/LPR

  • Error when trying to add printer on USB Print Server

I'm attempting to connect to a Canon MP530 printer via a Netcomm NP3680 USB Print Server.
When attempting to add the printer via the Print & Scan process, the USB port is seen by the MacBook and listed - ie: mini_me-3-usb2, and the driver is selected automatically without any problem after gathering printer information, however the macbook is unable to connect and returns the error: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer."
If a manual configuration is attempted the message returned is: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. Unable to communicate with the printer at this time." Further manual config via the IP address will allow the printer to be entered, however the printer is non-responsive.
I have setup this printer via the same Print Server on the same Macbook prior to this and it setup and worked correctly - the same setup is working correctly on my wife's macbook. However I had to remove the setup on my Macbook and can't get the printer functioning again on this particular Macbook, or my son's.
The direct connection setup via USB directly works without any problem at all.
I'm currently running OSX 10.8.1, however my son is running 10.7.x and has the same problem. My wife's macbook is also running 10.7.x and is working fine.
Can anyone throw any light on this issue - it is truely frustrating, especially when I know it has worked in the past.
    thanks very much in advance
    GDT

After 55 views and 0 replies, and a number of calls to Applecare (without success) , I decided to once again troubleshoot the problem.
    Fixed!
Bearing in mind, I had no other printers already set up in the Print and Scan window....
I removed the following items from the /library/preferences directory:
    "com.apple.print.makequeues.plist",
    "jp.co.canon.ij.print.filter.raster2canonij.plist",
    "jp.co.canon.ij.print.utility.command2canonij.plist",
    "org.cups.printers.plist"
I also removed all items from the /library/printers directory (including Canon, PPDs, plist files and icons)
Then I retried to install the printer..... (holidng my breath) and the Console showed:
    Repairing access permissions of "/Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist"
    All is fine now

  • Can't connect to printer via usb print server

So I've tried to connect to an EPSON stylus printer from my iMac via a print server with no success.
Here's some info to help focus the questions/help:
iMac running Mavericks, Epson SP R200 printer, Belkin Play router, Toshiba Satellite laptop, Level1 USB print server
Win8.1 laptop prints via print server just fineso IP, port, firewall issues on router/print server side are ruled out.
I have the fire wall off on the iMac
I've quadruple checked IP and subnet numbers of iMac to rest of network, and they all jive.
I can pull up the config page of the print server via Safari on the iMacso connectivity is there
I previously had the printer attached directly to the iMac, and successfully printed.
I've tried to add the printer via IP > LPD method AND Advanced > Windows printer via spoolss
I can get as far as adding the printer, but as soon as I attempt to print a test page the printer has a "filter" error, or some "color" error, the job just goes into nothingness, or the job just sits there and the que is paused.
This is very frustrating to put it nicely.

What driver are you using? - Don't know if you remember, but you had to be using Gutenprint, because Epson's driver for USB-only printers, only works via USB.

  • Printing to USB printer attached to a PC

I want to print from my MBP connected by wifi to my home network.
The USB printer is connected to my desktop PC running Windows XP and is already shared.
I can find the printer and add it onto my list of printers on my MBP but its failing to print.
    I have a HP All-in-one LaserJet 3030
is there something I am missing?
    Thanks.

I don't have that printer -- but for nearly all Laserjets, that support both postscript and PCL (HP's page language), the PCL driver is the preferred driver at setup on Windows. When the Mac sends postscript (the Mac driver is for postscript only), the PC driver doesn't handle it right, and you get your symptoms. Re-Add the printer using the postscript driver on the PC, then use that one to send Mac printing through.

  • Print to USB Printer Connected to Airport Extreme Base Stati

Last year I purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station router, because at the time it was the only way to print wirelessly from my Mac to my HP USB printer.
I just bought my wife an iPad (3rd gen) and she is asking me how to print from her new iPad....and it's looking like it's not possible/practical. Something about the printer has to be "AirPrint" compatible. Is that true even if the printer is a USB printer connected to an Airport Extreme (not Express) router?
If so...then I totally regret wasting the money on such an expensive router!!!

Thanks, but I want to print directly via wifi with no PC or Mac in the middle. Looks like Collobos' solution requires that.
It looks like the most popular app for what I need is Print n Share. I'm going to try a different, free "Lite" app on the app store first and then may buy the Print n Share. Based on reviews, seems like it works perfectly for half the buyers and is a complete fail for the other half...

  • Can't connect to a networked printer - Airlink101 USB Print Server

I am new to Mac. I am trying to connect my iMac to a Brother HL-5040 laser printer through an Airlink101 USB print server over my wireless network. The iMac connected to the 802.11g network immediately without any issues which is more than I can say for the other XP machines I own. I have several other Windows PC's networked and they all print just fine. Using the print setup utility, I can find the networked print server and add it to the printer list; however, I can not print. The status monitor indicates that it can't connect. The install directions on the Airlink101 website for the Mac does not seem to match the options that are part of the "add a printer" utilility. Any help would be appreciated.

When we try to add another one of the printers it finds the printer with the IP, it auto-detected the driver, then when I click next, I get an error stating there was an "error connecting to the printer would you continue anyway?"
We try to print but the queue just continuously pauses and nothing gets sent to the printer.
This could be a result of the protocol you selected. IPP is the default listed. If you remove this printer and add again, but this time change the protocol drop menu to HP Jetdirect-Socket, see if this works better for the user.

  • Unable to print to USB printer over the network

    Hi all,
I have an iMac and an Macbook Air, both running 10.6.4, and I've got an HP LaserJet 1200 printer connected to the iMac by USB. Both machines are on my home wireless network (Linksys, FWIW).
I seem to be unable to print to the LaserJet over the network from my Air. I've tried all manner of permutations of printer setup on the Air: IPP/LPD/HP JetDirect; entering the hostname (*.local) and the IP address of the host; leaving the queue blank and not; and leaving "Print Using" as generic vs selecting the LaserJet drivers. The printers appear in the "Default" Add Printer menu as Bonjour Shared, but this doesn't seem to work either.
Following other threads, I've tooled around with CUPS (resetting the configuration file, etc.), with no success. The other threads I've found on the subject seem to be more specifically addressed to folks trying to use an AirPort.
Any suggestions for what to try next?

In that case, let me elaborate on what happens when I try to set up the printer via Bonjour, in case there are any clues in the behavior that I'm seeing. The printer seems to appear twice in the "Default" pane, with Kind as 'Bonjour Shared' and Printer Names as follows:
    HP LaserJet 1200 @ (hostname)
    HP LaserJet 1200 @ (hostname) @ (hostname)
Selecting the first, it displays "Gathering printer information..." for a few minutes, then strikes out, suggesting Generic PostScript Printer rather than the correct driver. Whether I stick with that or select the correct driver manually and then try to print, it hangs on 'Copying print data..." (in the print queue).
Selecting the second, it gathers printer information only for a second or two before settling on Generic PostScript Printer. If I stick with Generic PostScript Printer, it hangs on 'Connected to printer...' but if I select the correct driver, it hangs on 'Copying print data...' again.

  • Print to USB printer connected to  Airport Express using AirPrint?

Is there a way to print from iPad to a printer connected via USB cable to Airport Express? When i try to print from Safari using th print function, it is unable to find any printers

A printer connected via USB to an AirPort Express is not supported by iOS printing. That is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
But there are other solutions, unsupported by Apple, that should work if you don't mind having a Mac turned on to share your printer. You can take a look at FingerPrint, Printopia, and AirPrint Activator.

  • CUPS not recognizing Epson USB-Printer

I'm trying to get an Epson Stylus Office Box BX300F to work with Arch x86_64.
I have followed the CUPS wiki page closely and have installed everything it told me to.
When i connected to http://localhost:631/admin and clicked 'add printer' the USB printer was not listed. dmesg however showed me that the printer is at least recognized to some extent:
[ 2295.813154] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device number 6 using ehci_hcd
    [ 2295.951540] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 6 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04B8 pid 0x0848
[ 2297.177498] usb 2-1: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'usb' sets config #1
I tried blacklisting usblp, but then, after rebooting, it got not recognized at all, so i undid that.
Then i found the printer in the openprint db (link), found the driver that is listed as working perfectly there in the AUR (link) and installed that package. But it doesn't seem to help at all, CUPS still doesn't list any USB printer. I've included the full section of /var/log/cups/error_log with loglevel=debug, hope it helps. Any suggestions on how i can get the printer working are greatly appreciated.

I have gotten around to give this printer another try and when i connected it and read through /var/log/cups/error_log i noticed 2 lines close to the end that seem to be the problem:
    D [24/Aug/2011:12:42:23 +0200] [CGI] libusb couldn't open USB device /dev/bus/usb/002/006: Permission denied.
D [24/Aug/2011:12:42:23 +0200] [CGI] libusb requires write access to USB device nodes.
i checked the permissions, but they seem to be allright:
    $ ls -l /dev/bus/usb/002/006
    crw-rw-r--+ 1 root scanner 189, 133 24. Aug 12:42 /dev/bus/usb/002/006
    $ id
    ...,7(lp),10(wheel),96(scanner),97(camera)
here is the complete part of error_log from connecting the printer:

i found a related thread ( https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=110477 ) but that deals with digital cameras, so it doesn't really help me. Other forum threads i found about libusb permission errors were mostly people that forgot to add themselves to lp and the like. Does anyone know why i get the permission errors and how i can fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Hp cp1160 deskjet printer won't print from Mac OS 9

    Hello,
I am running OS 9.2.2 on my Mac and I can't seem to print to my HP CP1160 inkjet printer.
It is connected using USB. My other USB devices work fine. In fact in the Apple System profiler, I can see the CP1160 printer listed as being connected and it also appears in the chooser. So it appears to be OK. Unfortunately however, it does not print.
I am using the correct driver for OS9. It is called: "hp deskjet v5.4" installed by the "OS 8-9.x-Classic installer".
Now when I go to print it does not print and the file sent to the printer appears in the print spool window for just a few seconds and then disappears.
    Then this error message appears:
document "nameofdocument" failed to print on the printer "cp1160" because of an error. -28
followed by the choices: cancel job, hold job or try again
And when using the test feature of the hp inkjet utility this error message appears:
"There was a communication error, make sure the printer is connected and turned on."
    Why will it not print?
What should be my next troubleshooting step?
    Thank you for any suggestions,
PS It is interesting to note that this printer works fine in OS10.1 on the same computer and it also works with OS 10.4 on another computer. The computer that has this print problem has both OS 10.1 and OS 9 on it. It prints fine from OS 10.1 but not from 9. I installed the appropriate driver for OS 10.1 and it works fine and I installed the appropriate driver for OS9 and it is this OS9 driver that does not seem to want to enable the printer to print. Thank you for any suggestions.
    Specs:
Computer model: 233 MHz G3 beige with ratoc USB/firewire card.
    OS: 9.2.2.

I tried all of these suggestions but none were successful. I suppose my third party card (Ratoc USB/Firewire card) is just not compatible with my printer. Thats too bad. I guess the only way I can print with this printer is to boot up in OSX. That works. I wish I could print from OS9 too however. Thanks again Kenichi for your good suggestions It was a good try.
For the record, here were the extensions I disabled (and re-booted after disabling each one at a time):
    Desktop Printer Spooler
    Desktop Print Monitor
    Print Monitor
    Printing Lib
    Printer Share
    USB Printer Sharing
    Desktop Printer Menu
    color SW 1500
    color SW 2500
    color SW Pro
    CSW 6000 series
    Imagewriter
    Laserwriter 300/LS
    Laserwriter 8
therefore these extensions do not conflict with my cp1160 - it must be something else - perhaps my third party USB card (Ratoc USB/Firewire card).

    Thank you for the answer.
USB printer is connected locally to the workstation. Print serwer
installed on LAN serwer. I`d like to install iPrint locally on the
workstation but I don`t know which version to choose. I can print only
without loggin on to Novell Netware. When I log on to LAN printer doesn`t
    respond and I can`t print.

  • Print with airport express from ipad

I have airport express and i will print with my ipad, but it doesn`t work. Can you help me?

ipad cannot print to USB printer. It has to be airprint.
There is a way around it. Use a printer app like Printopia on the iMac to handle the airprint protocols.
There are several apps available and I don't use it so do a quick google for reviews of the best.

  • WDS with Win 7, 10.6 and USB printer

I've tried many times to get this to work.
Here's the setup I want to happen:
Westell 7500 as the DSL router hub.
Apple Airport Extreme working as a WDS.
    USB printer plugged into Airport.
Win 7 desktop wired with ethernet to airport.
Win 7 and Apple laptops print to USB printer.
    Here is what doesn't work:
    Mac wireless computers cannot print.
Win 7 Desktop cannot connect to internet.
Win 7 so far unable to print.
AIrport is b/g, Westell is also b/g. UPNP is enabled in Westell.
    Win7 64, 10.4.11, and 10.6.3.
Win 7 has the Airport Utility on it.

i think i figured out a solution. i downloaded the mac osx 10.6.8 combination update and installed it. the devices now work perfectly. i am wondering if there was some corrupt code or something somewhere. i would have liked a precise solution but atleast this will work for whomever finds this post. thank you for your reply.
