Printing to Video Problems

When I try to print to video, the deck records and I see what I'm trying to record on my computer monitor. But in playback all I get is a black screen with no audio. Is there some A/V setting that needs to be adjusted?

#8 External Monitor Viewing.
Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Print to Video problem

Hi. I'm trying to back up a large amount of raw footage by using the File/Print To Video option to record onto MiniDV tapes. I'm using a MacBook Pro, FCP 6.0.6 and a Sony HDV Handicam as the recording deck. When I've tried to Print to Video, the footage displays on my monitor, but not in the display LCD panel of the video camera. After rewind and playback, nothing has been recorded. I went through the forum to read up on similar problems and think the issue might be that I can't get FCP to give me any Video Playback options under File/Audio/Video Settings/Summary/Video Playback: I'm defaulting to "None" and only "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview" options are available. I've tried rebooting several times, switching between a Sony iLink S400 cable and a generic Firewire, but no luck.
I don't know if it matters, but the original footage is stored on an external drive. It wasn't shot on this handicam. When I logged and transfered a small clip of this footage into a new test project, I allow FCP to match my sequence settings to the clip settings, resulting in a Sequence/Sequence Settings Panel with the following:
    Frame Size: 960x720 HD (960x720) (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720)
    Field Dominance: None
    Editinng Timebase: 23.98
    QuickTime Video Settings
    Compressor: DVDPRO HD 720p60
    Audio Settings
    Rate: 48kHz
    Depth: 16-bit
    Config: Channel Grouped
Thanks for any help you can give me. I need a reliable way to archive a ton of footage like this, so any alternative ideas would also be appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Rick

OK...now keep that in mind. HDV camera. Print to video is the solution...BUT...
    Frame Size: 960x720 HD (960x720) (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720)

DVCPRO HD! That is NOT HDV. You cannot PRINT TO VIDEO via firewire a format that is NOT HDV. Not possible. Not unless you convert it TO HDV. But then you are taking a nice 100mbps, intra-frame (individual frame) 720p 23.98 footage and convert it to 1080i 29.97 Log GOP format. It will not be close to what your original footage looks like.
If you insist on archiving to HDV, then you need an HD Capture card (one that cross converts 720p to 1080i, BTW), and high end HDV deck with SDI imputs. But then you are changing HD formats.
Nope...wanna keep the same format? Then rent a DVCPRO HD deck. Know though, that when you output you won't be running at 23.98 anymore...it will be converted to 720p 59.94, as that is the format that the tape records. And you can't remove the pulldown, as outputting to tape from FCP doesn't include any 23.98 pulldown flags.
This is P2, right? Keep and archive the ORIGINAL P2 card dumps to bare SATA drives, or firewire drives. Or invest in an LTO tape archiving.
HDV is not an archiving/mastering format. It is acquisition only.

  • HDV Print to Video Problem

One of my clients is having a problem trying the Print to Video an HDV sequence.
The workflow is to capture their HDV clips as DVCPRO HD via an Aja Kona LHe, edit in DVCPRO HD, then send the project to another facility that has an HDCAM deck for mastering to tape. However, for their first edit, they've created the pilot show, and they want to use it to get more program sponsors. Their only option is to use their Sony HMV-M25U HDV deck and an HD monitor to show the pilot to prospective sponsors.
To do that, they now have to output the pilot show to HDV. They've copied the DVCPRO HD sequence into an HDV timeline and rendered and conformed it. But when they go to Print to Video, they get this error message:
"Unable to perform print to video operation for HDV as
RT Extreme is not supported. Improved CPU Speed
and/or RAM needed to enable RT Extreme and HDV print
    to video."
They have a Quad 3GHz MacPro with 4GB RAM, and the Scratch Disk is a 2-way RAID stripe using two of their four internal SATA drives striped together. The boot volume is on a separate drive.
They are using Mac OS X v10.4.8, QT 7.1.3, and FCP 5.1.4.
I don't have an HDV deck to try to duplicate their situation, so I need your help. If you've done HDV and experienced this error message, what is the solution?
They also have received these error messages:
"The sequence is not compatible w/HDV print to video."
"Incompatible settings. You may have attempted to
output a clip w/compression settings that do not match
the current output settings. Try nesting the clip in
    a sequence w/the correct settings."
Both those messages would seem to indicate their setting are messed up.
They are 1,000 miles from me, so I can't see their FCP and deck settings. They swear that the sequence is an HDV 1080i60 sequence and that the deck is set to record HDV.
    HELP.

OK, I have discovered the problem, and it's a doozy.
Her HDV sequence was set for 1280 X 1080, HDV 1080 Compressor, rather than 1440 X 1080. We have no clue how that happened, but it did.
Here's what I had her do last night when she was creating it: She changed the Easy Setup to HDV 1080i60, then created a new sequence. Then she went to the original DVCPRO HD sequence and did a Command-C to copy, then back to the new HDV 1080i60 sequence and Command-V to paste.
This morning, after I discovered the 1280 problem, I did the exact same steps and the new sequence was 1440 X 1080 HDV. I called her and had her do the exact same thing again, and now that new sequence is 1440 X 1080 HDV.
She is now rendering and conforming. I had her make sure ALL of the render bars were checked in Sequence > Render All, and that she chose Both audio and video. This should do it.
Now, the really tough part. I've got to re-read the thread and choose only two Helpful posts. Why can't we have as many as we need??????

  • Final Cut HD-Print to video problem

Hello brainy people and Help! I am experiencing problems with the Print to Video function. The mac switches the machine on and puts the canon into REC mode, the tape goes round and it records. However on playback there is no image. I have tried tweaking the settings in the dialogue boxes to no avail. I also have another XM2 camera and firewire cable, the results are the same.

What drives are you using? How's the camera connected? What version of FCE? What version of QuickTime?

  • FCE2 print to video problem-no signal

I have a very simple 1 minute video from timeline I'd like to export to VHS for presentation, I tried many different permutations, and discovered along the way that Easy Setup must be config'ed for DV-Firewire but to the best that I can tell, I am unable to print to video. I have a 1 minute timline, firewire to a Formac converter box as a bridge and Composite cables set to OUT and IN to my VCR. No signal gets through. Initially FCE kept telling me the VCR was "write protected" even tough the tapes were not. I deselected "Automatically Start Recording" and at first it played complete with sound, but switching to Firewire setting, sound is silent, but I still see the video playback. (But switching back to Real Time in the top left of timeline, I got my sound back.) But later, after Easy Setup to Firewire Basic (or should that be DV Converter? I tried both to no avail), I simply get a "blue screen" on VHS when attempting to Print to Video. I will have to come up with an alternate solution for now.
I wonder if the difficulty is simply the VCR channel? I know the Line 1 + 2 on my other VCR and even tried connecting there, but nothing. The current VHS deck has "no channels" set as it's a standalone box used only for video capturing (the other direction).
I SUCCEEDED months ago but that was with a Sony Handycam. I'm trying to remember if I ever succeeded with this configuration. If anyone can assist, appreciated. The key question is: What settings should there be, and what should I be looking for? I do have the FCE manual and reading that is very basic.

I have to go further, but yes! I needed that prodding to confirm that there's nothing functionally wrong with the FCE setup. I connected the composite to my big tv stretching waay across, and it PLAYED the timeline in TV's INPUT 3, and I have 2 VCRs connected there, but figuring out how to get the VCRs to see the signal I have to work on. This has to do with LINE IMHO, there's one VCR that "understands" line even tho all 3 are same Panasonic brand.. (!?!) this is on a big JVC. I will now attempt to hook up the composite directly to the one VCR and select "Line" channel and then crossed fingers that it sees the firewire. When using Input 3 on TV, it starts out as PINK screen.

  • Problem with Print to Video in FCP 6.0

In the past I have been able to print to video with FCP 5, now not working with FCP 6. My Sony HVR A1U is seen by FCP, I can log & capture no problem. When I go to print to video, the sequence does not show up on my camera LCD and I cannot capture it. I have checked the system profiler and under firewire the camera is listed. In the print to video window I have checked Automatically Start Recording, but this has no effect.
    Thank you for your advice

Just curious. How do you get your computer too see the HVR. I am using I movie HD and it does not see anything. Is there a camera setup procedure? I looked at the vague manual which was no help.
    Thanks in Advance

  • Sony Z1 Print to video HDV problems

I researched several post on this topic and still can't get this to work. Here's my situation. I have imported and edited my HDV footage in the HDV easy set up in FCP 5. I now want to record this HDV sequence (in HDV format) back to a Sony Master tape using my Z1. I am working in a PAL environment and have dbl checked all my settings on the camera and within FCP and I still can't get the video to output. I just get a blue screen on my camera monitor. Can the Sony Z1 even record back to tape in HDV format? When I have the IN/OUT Rec setting set to HDV, REC MODE is greyed out. Only when I have this set to DV or Auto is the REC MODE open to changes. I have my camera set to VCR and the settings are these on the camera:
IN/OUT Rec: VCR HDV/DV is set to HDV (Thats what I want to record in, yes?)
    REC MODE: Greyed out
    Component is 1080i (Pal)
    iLink is set to off
A/V to D/V Out is off
Final Cut Pro settings: (Audio Video Settings)
Summary Tab: Sequence Preset is: HDV-1080i50
    Capture Preset is HDV
    Device Control: Sony Firewire
    AV Device Tab:
    Playback Output Video: NONE
    Audio: Default
"Different Output for Edit to tape/print to video" Certain settings are greyed out. On this it depends on what my camera is set to in the IN/OUT Rec setting.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Been trying to get this to work for days.

  • Unable to recognize deck when printing to video (fcp 6.0.5)

I am driving myself absolutely crazy trying to figure this one out. I found a previous thread discussing the same problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8602649) but nothing has worked.
My footage was shot using a Sony HVR-V1U. I captured using the ProRes 422 codec. My audio video settings are set with the following...
    sequence preset: Apple Pro Res 422 1440 x 1080 60i 48khz
capture preset: Apple Pro Res 422
device control preset: sony firewire hdv
When click on the A/V tab, different output for edit to tape/print to video is selected:
    video: [Missing] HDV 1440 x 1080 60i
    audio: default
Im not sure why the missing is there. My firewire port is working and i can capture without a problem.
I've tried trashing the prefs and am at a loss. This problem may have an easy solution and really hope someone can help!
    Thanks!

Sorry to say, these days that machine is marginal, and HDV is processor intensive. I hate that darned codec already.
Just for laughs, capture one clip as prores and see if you can recreate the behaviour. It might behoove you to re-ingest your footage if you haven't gotten too far along.

  • Print to Video Does not Work

I am running Final Cut pro 5. I am trying to send my time line to a mindv deck using print to video. I have a monitor hooked up to the deck to watch what is being recorded. I set my in and out points in the time line and and select print to video from the menu. I do not have any of the boxes checked, because i have black and color bars already in my time line. I select in/out and hit ok. The screen goes black and my video shows up in the middle playing, but nothing shows up on my monitor and when i watch the tape that i am recording to, there is nothing on there as well. The device control is working, because I can capture footage off of the deck, but it seems to not be getting a signal when I am trying to print to tape. I have also tried edit to tape, and I press record on the deck after setting up the sequence and then I play the sequence, and nothing is still recorded onto the tape. For both edit to tape and print to tape, everything is working, but nothing is being recorded onto the tape. I have also tried hooking up my sony camera to be used to record, but that doesn't work either. Any help would be great thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Make sure the deck has it's input selection set to firewire for starters...
I'm not clear if this is part of the problem, but FCP 5.0.4 will run better in Tiger.
But if you can see external video, you should also be able to print to video or edit to tape... if you can't then keep troubleshooting your Firewire connection... got a different cable to try? Can you capture video OK?

  • Print to video HDV not working

I'm having problems with printing my HDV project to the camera.
On a DV project it works, but when I open my HDV project I cannot choose any external video options,
I can log and capture, but not the other way.
I read that the edit to tape function does not work in HDV, but printing to video should.
    Just don't know how
    Maybe someone can help me
    Thank you!

If it's a sony camera involved, select the "Easy Setup" that matches the sequence setting... like 1080i for example, and see if this doesn't clear things up. Make sure the camera is in VTR mode as well. If it's not a Sony camera check the settings it uses here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php

  • Unable to print to video, out to Sony V1U

Wedding video shot with Sony V1U, HDV 1080i 16x9. Imported into FCEHD3.5, using easy set up hdv 1080 AIC. total movie length 100minutes. Edited fine. Exported as a QT movie self contained to desk top, no problem. Then attempted to export from the time line the entire sequence. The FCE is pretty easy to export from and set the sony v1u to HDV import with both auto and HDV settings. It is in VTR mode. I checked the render again and it was complete. saved the project. Closed FCEHD. connected fire wire from cam to computer and powered up cam with what appear to be the correct setting according to the manual. Opened FCEHD and project. Rechecked render, resaved project and chose print to video. Went through the next screen as I normally do and have tried with both automatic record start and manual record start. Clicked start and the computer does its job and the video starts but the camera does not appear to ever be controlled by the computer. I let it run for about 30 minutes to see if it needed time to change from Mpeg2 back to HDV. Maybe I did not wait long enough for the number crunching before I gave up.
Question 1: What am I doing wrong.
I tried to export a SD movie and it worked fine.
I tried to send it to IDVD from the QTmovie.fcp file on the desk top but it immediately shuts down IDVD. I tried to import into ImovieHD and it gave me a QT error. I thought maybe imovie had a time limit so I re-exported the movie in to sections as FCP and then dragged and dropped into imovie and it worked. The resolution is much worse in imovie as compared to the great video in FCEHD.
Question 2: Am I losing quality as I move from HDV to FCEHD ( I would assume so as it is going to Mpeg2), and even more when I go then from FCEHD to imovie.
Question 3: When I print to tape from fce back to my original hdv setting it should convert back to hdv correct?
    Any advide would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Steve

    Purchased IDVD8 and problem solved

  • Having trouble with audio edit to tape, print to video ok

Hi all, please go easy on me, this is my first post.
I am having difficulty getting audio on to tape via 'edit to tape'.
The hardware is blackmagic decklink extreme, feeding component video and analoge audio to a UVW-1800P.
I can do a print to video on a crash record and the audio works that way, but edit to tape does not.
I have tried both deck link and built in audio in the audio settings and the FCP a/v settings, seperate and ganged output settings, I have set the insert settings to 2 channel Sony, reloaded the decklink drivers.
The irritating thing is the audio is there whilst cutting, but as soon as I try edit to tape there is complete silence. The important thing is that it worked a few weeks back but does not now, it must be a setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I had this same problem and this resolved it for me:
-Go to your "Settings" icon and click on the "General" tab.
-About 2/3 way down the page you will see "Use side switch to:" - make sure "mute" is checked rather than "lock rotation."
-Then make sure the side switch, located next to the volume toggle switch on the side of your ipad, is moved to the right (no red dot showing).
My audio worked fine in embedded videos after I did those two things.  Hope it works for you.

  • Print To Video HDV dropping out

When I try to print to video from the computer to a Sony HDV 1080i deck it goes and conforms all the video then I start the process and it works fine until a certain spot and will go to black then back on again etc.
I've tried this a few times and at the same spot will get the problem so I checked to make sure it wasn't the tape, I threw away the rendered files and re-rendered them again. I even saved the project to a quicktime movie which played back looks fine. I tried to use the quicktime file and it stops at the same place everytime.
    Any suggestions?
I even went and rendered all of my sequences, mixed down the audio etc.
    thanks in advance!
Just recently went from FCP 5.1.2 to 5.1.4 I did another project last week and the print to video worked out fine I was wondering if this was a bug in 5.1.4?
    Using FCP 5.1.4

conforming and decoding the mpeg2 HDV stream seems to be the hardest thing for the computer to do. Enough RAM, and a beefy video card will help. I think it's a miracle every time I can get a batch of HDV clips to sucessfully capture. Cutting doesn't go too bad, but I have found outputting native HDV to be nearly impossible.
We had about 3 hours worth of 10-15 minute segments to output, and it took close to 3 weeks of constant effort, outputting one sequence at a time. It would black out, stop playing back, freeze up, put all kind of breaks in the timecode even if you pre-stripe the tape. And all the while it would never, ever alert or abort on dropped frames, timcode breaks, etc.
One of the big problems was rendered material. I used a page peel transition (I know, I know, it was a video cookbook, gimme a break) in the HDV segments. I took the time to set up each one with an image for the "back" of the page from the context of the segment. Rendered playback from the timeline looked fine, but as soon as I went to tape, the background of each peel would display whatever image I had most recently applied - all of them - but only on output. I wound up having to replace the backgound of each one one at a time, export each transition as a self-contained movie, bring it back in as clips and re-sync it with the surrounding media. Luckily there were only about 150 of them to do. All this I started doing after the first solid week of failed output attempts. Even then, any rendered material in my sequences would trigger the dreaded dropouts, freeze frames, skips, and substituted rendered material. So after another couple days of attempts, I wound up exporting self-contained movies of every minute of my output, re-editing them back into sequences, and so finally I was able to output to tape in 10-minute chunks, and it only took 5 or 10 tries for each one. The only reason I really needed to go to tape in the first place was because I found impossible to transcode the HDV to SD mpeg for DVD without field artifacts, and abysmally unacceptible quality. So I recaptured the HDV as DV using the deck's downconvert, which seemed to be the only thing it could do well.
I believe that a faster computer with more RAM and a better video card would have made a big difference. Newer versions of FCP have probably solved a lot of the issues I had with the rendered material. Even so, there are aspects of the long-GOP, mpeg-2 stream aspects of HDV and the way that it negatively affects timecode, deck control, and capture and output, that make the format my last choice for professional editing.
For your situation, I'd recommend exporting a self-contained movie, maybe even try AIC, although it'll have to reconform back down to HDV for FW HDV output. Try all your various Mac voodoo steps before starting output - trash prefs, repair permissions, power-cycle everything. You can borrow my feathered headdress and tortoise-shell rattle if you want.
Sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer for you...

  • Print to Video - not working as expected

I'm trying to the Print to Video command to record my project on DV tape.
I'm using firewire for computer to camera connection. My MAC firewire port is configured for my camera model - SONY DRV-TRV-900.
My Sequence and Capture presets are the same: DV NTSC 48kHz. (My Capture preset summary shows that it is for DRV-TRV-900).
My Device Control preset is: Firewire NTSC.
Video Playback is: Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480).
    Audio Playback is: Firewire DV.
When I select -Print to Video- my camera does go from STANDBY to REC and the timecode starts rolling. But when the image appears on my computer monitor it is not being recorded onto the DV tape.
In troubleshooting I did put my camera into VTR and then I was able to play the video from my project out to the camera LCD screen.
    Appreciate any replies.

Thanks for this info. I had tried Edit to Tape before and had some degree of Device Control but the actual video was not being recorded to tape although the camera indicated it was recoding.
This is pretty much the same situation if I use Print to Video.
IN and OUT points are marked... and with both PTV and ETT I've configured to try both of the settings to record from - In to OUT- and -Entire Media-.
Note that in the FCP 5 manual it says "FCP cannot record to your camcorder when it is set to CAMERA Mode" and "Make sure your video equipment is connected to your computer, turned on and set to VCR, sometimes labeled as VTR."
So I've tried this setup on my camera and also have tried the CAMERA mode. Whether the camera is set to CAMERA mode or VTR the problem is the same...no video being recorded to the DV tape.
    Is my explanation here clear?
    Thanks
    Jim

  • Can Print to Video HDV sequence

Hello, I am trying to export an HDV sequence to a miniDV tape for broadcast. I am using a Sony GV-HD700 tape deck. I am using Print to Video and it just wont work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I am having this same problem, and need help urgently. Does anyone know how to resolve this? I can control the deck through FCP and the FireWire cable, and can even initiate automatic recording from FCP, but once it starts playing the content the deck freezes and does not actually record anything.
