Printing using parallels desktop

hi. i have a photo printer, fujifilm QS-7. unfortunately it is ONLY compatible with windows xp, even though the driver for it has installed on my mac and shows as active.
i have come to a work around where i have installed xp using parallels and it works great if i print from xp.
however, i would like to know if i could click print on my mac and it would automatically print using xp, saving me time going into xp itself ad clicking print???

Hi Ian,
Apple BootCamp allows you to install Windows on its own partition on your internal harddisk.
It does not allow installation of Windows on external HDs.
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
BootCamp lets you run Windows natively (using the real hardware) whereas Parallels virtualizes certain hardware parts (like Ethernet controller, graphics card, etc.).
Therefor BootCamp Windows is always faster than a Parallels Windows and so better suited for Games or 3D-CAD software.
Depending on your Windows usage, you might not even feel the speed difference.
Downside of BootCamp is that you have to reboot your Mac to use Windows whereas with Parallels you can run it alongside OSX.
While the Parallels application has to reside on your internal harddisk, you can point the WIndows VM to reside on your external harddisk.

  • Windows XP iTunes won't launch (using Parallels Desktop 4.0)

After installing latest version it won't launch at all.
I get an alert with a red cross that says:
"The itunes application could not be opened. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation"
I am using Parallels Desktop 4.0, with Windows XP SP2.
I've uninstalled all iTunes files, and reinstalled. Still nothing.
Before the update, iTunes would launch, but it said that the library couldn't be used because of access privileges.
    Someone please help...

I get the error message "itunes.exe has caused errors in windows. Error log created. Windows will now close." I've tried fixing iTunes using the "repair" option in itunes.exe, uninstalling and reinstalling both QuickTime and iTunes, and am now out of options.

  • Can 2 gb ram on 2.4GHz  run windows 7 using parallell desktop

If I buy the new 13 inches 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM, is it enough to run Windows seven using Parallel Desktop or should I have 4GB of RAM?
    Thank you

When running a virtual machine such as Parallel you'd be better off running as much memory in the Book that you can afford. 4GB should be enough but 2GB you may find a little troublesome.
Also look into Sun's "Virual Box" it is a free VM. Not as many bells and whistles as Parallels but work very well.

  • Macbook lag when using Parallel Desktop

I always use Parallel Desktop since when college portal website only can be accessed by Internet Explorer, so I installed Windows Xp. The thing is it really uses a lot my RAM memory, only 20 MB of Ram is free. In Parallel Desktop configuration, I have changed the RAM slot for virtual machine, I just allocated 1064 MB Ram, and it ticked for " the best performance" or in other words I let the processor to do the adjust automatically so my Macbook can run at its best performance. I have also changed the processor in virtual machine to 2(dual-core) but still my macbook lags when I run Parallel Desktop. My HDD is 160GB and I have occupied more than of it, like 60 GB left. I have a lot of vital programs so I wonder if this thing is a major cause of this lagging problem. Any advice what should I do to speed up my macbook performance back?

If you want your Mac to run better, turn Parallels down to 1 core and bump the ram down to 512Mb. Having the RAM up high and the cores up high will allow Parallels to grab more of the resources, thus slowing down the whole computer. Limit parallels to less, you shouldn't give it 50% or more of your machine unless all you do is Window stuff.
Check your graphics config too, if your not playing games in Parallels, turn off 3D graphics and only give it 16 or 32Mb VRAM.

  • Cannot see html pages LOCALLY STORED on Mac drive, using Parallels Desktop?

Using Parallels Desktop running Windows XP, I cannot use Safari 3 to view HTML files stored on my Mac - no matter how I try!
If I locate the file within Windows Explorer and I right-click and choose "Open With > Safari Web Browser" Safari will open, but it will only open a blank window and nothing loads (the Status Bar remains blank).
If I open Safari and choose "Open File..." and navigate to the file on my Mac and click "Open" I get an error message which states:
Safari can’t open the page “file://.PSF/Macintosh%20HD/..."
    etc.
Note that the URL it is trying to open begins with:
    “file://.PSF/"
whereas doing the same thing from within Internet Explorer shows the URL to begin with:
    "\\.PSF\"
without the "file" part. Also notice the BACKslashes, rather than FORWARDslashes.
Lastly, trying to open a blank Safari window and drag-and-drop the HTML file from Windows Explorer directly into the Safari window results in exactly the same problem.
Note that ALL 3 of the above-mentioned methods DO work in Internet Explorer.
Finally, even copying-and-pasting the local URL that DOES work in IE into Safari's Address Bar doesn't work either. The problem this time is that not only does Safari turn all the backslashes into forwardslashes, but it also adds "http:" to the beginning of the URL, when it was not in the originally-copied link, which began with "\\.PSF\".

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply - but you're really really not paying attention to what I'm saying...
I AM giving Safari the full pathname, but when using Parallels Desktop, this full pathname begins with "\\.PSF\". That's how it starts. Nothing else before the two backslashes, OK. That's how it works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop. That's how it works in Windows Explorer when using Parallels Desktop.
I have given Safari the full pathname in FOUR different ways, as I mentioned in my original post: right-click, open with / file>open / drag-and-drop / copy-paste-URL.
With regards to my particular issue, I'm not concerned about how it works when using Windows running natively on a "proper" Windows PC. I am concerned about how it works when using Parallels Desktop.
If you really want to know the full URL (not that it matters one jot) of an example file that I can open with Internet Explorer, but not with Safari, here's the URL of the file I was originally trying to test:
    \\.PSF\Macintosh%20HD\Work\Downie\Website\HTML\index.html
That's it. Everything is there. I have not left off anything at the beginning of that URL.
That's how it works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop. OK, re-read that. It works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop.
When I copy that URL exactly as it is, and paste it into Safari and hit return, Safari automatically converts it to:
    http://.psf/Macintosh%20HD/Work/Downie/Website/HTML/index.html
Note how it has altered it in several respects:
    - It has added "http:" to the beginning of the URL.
    - It has turned the original "PSF" into a lower-case "psf".
    - It has turned all the backslashes into forwardslashes.
I try manually deleting and altering the relevant parts and hitting return again, but Safari just goes back to the "wrong URL".
When you say "the only prefix for local files is file://" you are obviously not familiar with how Parallels Desktop works with and reads "local files".
Remember what I said earlier about how you're not REALLY looking at LOCAL files, because TRUE local files would be on the Windows section of the drive, and I am trying to look at files on the Mac part of the drive.
I'll repeat what I said earlier:
If you are not testing this from within Parallels Desktop like I am, and where I am having the problems, then your words here are not of much use, because you cannot experience what I am experiencing. You cannot comment on the experience on how this works from within Parallels Desktop if you do not have Parallels Desktop and have not experienced it yourself.

  • When i try to print from Parallels Desktop to my mac printer, it cannot convert the prescript file.  what should i do?

i use Quickbooks accounting for windows and when i bought my new mac i had to buy parallels desktop so that i could continue to use my accounting software.  it has been working since then and i dont know what happened, but now when i print something i get a message saying that states "Unable to Convert The ProScript File".
    Help Please!!!

    i need this fixed a.s.a.p!!!!

I don't have Parallels; I use Fusion. And in Fusion you have the option to use the installed printer is OS X to print. I have seen printing from Windows 7 to the Mac printer result in errors and there is a chance you are having the same issue.
If Parallels has the same facility where you can use the Mac's printer then I would suggest that you install a Windows driver for your printer in Parallels and not use the Mac printer. This should stop the conversion error you are getting.

  • Using Parallels Desktop 6 With Snow Leopard?

I believe that Parallels Desktop 6 will enable me to use Windows apps on my iMac.
However, I am clueless as to how the process works.
Do I simply install PD6 in order to use Windows apps or do I need to install a Windows operating system as well?
If this latter is the case, how on earth do I go about it without wiping off my OS X?
Any advice and help would be welcome.

  • I can't use Parallels Desktop after I installed Lion

Every time I try to start Parallels Desktop I get an error message about "no driver found" and "start your mac again".

    Thank's for the response.
I'm running version 5 of Parallels and that's obvious causing the problem. I will upgrade to version 7 and see if that solves the problem.
    Thanks,

  • Best Way to full a harddisk -- Use Parallels DeskTop Compress Funktion

    Hello
I recognised an idiot function in Parallels. Use Parallels Compresser.
I want to save some harddisk Space. My Parallels drive contains only 8 Gb out of 35Gb. So I want to reduced it. The free size of my Mac drive was 17Gb.
First I decide to use the defragmentation function of Windows XP. Result: My free size of my Mac drive was only 11Gb.
Then I decide to use the Parallels Compress Function. First it complains that it cann't run because it contains a snapshot. So I decide to delete the Snapshot with the SnapShot-Manager. Result: My free size of my Mac drive was only 9 Gb.
After all I am still not able to use the Compress Function, but I lost a total of 7Gb of my Harddisk
A great job done by Parallels Software International Inc.
Is their a way to solve this real problem?
    Regards
    Gérard

You should be talking to Parallels Software. These are user to user forums for Apple products.

  • I need to use my iMac to run some Windows software and was thinking of using Parallels Desktop 9 to help with this. Do you still have to partition your drive with Parallels and does this leave you open to viruses?

I need to use my iMac to run some Windows software not available for Mac and was thinking of obtaining Parrallels Desktop 9 to help with this. If I use Parrallels do you still have to partitian your drive and does this leave you open to viruses?

You do not have to partition your drive - Parallels creates a disk image which contains your Windows installation. You do have to exercise anti-virus measures in the Windows partition, although such malware cannot affect the Mac filesystem.

  • Can't use parallels desktop ver.7 after installed OS X Mountain Lion

    Dear All
Everyone has solution to fix this issue ? I can't use the parallets desktop ver.7 after installed os x mountain lion.
    Please advice.
    Thanks & regards

    Hi,
Make sure you have the most current build of Parallels 7 - it works well fro me, and the other poster, so unless you have some lind of issue internally, it should work for you.
Try doing a repair permissions from Disk Utility. I needed to do that to get Quicken Essentials to work.

  • Using Parallels Desktop for Mac

I have a Mac 10.5.8. I also am running Leopard. I want to be able to run Windows XP. I'm scared of getting a virus using Windows. So my question is this. Can I partition off space on my Mac, using Windows with Parallel 5? So if i get a virus that I can't get rid of, I can just rid myself of the partition. Is this possible?
    Thank You!

Windows viruses will affect Windows, not the Mac. Parallels creates a pseudo-disk by creating a sparsebundle disc image. The disc image is independent of OS X in the sense that a virus infecting the Windows system on the disc image cannot migrate to the Mac anymore than it could if you had a separate PC.
That said you can use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition on your hard drive then install Windows on that partition. You can then create a Parallels virtual machine that uses the Windows installation on the Boot Camp partition.
For clarification 10.5.8 is a version of Leopard, not a Mac model.

  • Can't print using Parallels. please help

I have my iMac on 10.4.11 running parallels.
I cant add my home printer. When it gets to the BROWSE FOR PRINTER dialog box, there is no printer available.
I have done all the necessary steps to prepare my MAC and VMachine for sharing (all the steps layed out in the Parallels Knowledge Base).
    any thoughts? thanks!

Since Parallels is not an Apple product, you'll probably want to post your question over on Parallels own discussion forums, as they've obviously more geared toward your issue rather than an Apple forum.
