Printing with Airport off?

Is this normal? Or does turning Airport off only deactivate reception of wireless signals? Or do signals sent to the Extreme for printing not use Airport?

Some questions that might help people give you useful advice:
- Is your printer connected to an AirPort base station?
- When you say "AirPort off", do you mean that (1) your AirPort base station is powered off, (2) your computer's AirPort circuitry is off, (3) that you've disabled wireless operation of your AirPort base station, or (4) something else?
- How does your computer communicate with your AirPort base station, by Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.

    Cisco vpn client..

I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

i have an imac g4 purchased Dec 2003 runnung OS 10.5.8.  It runs fine with airport off, but when I turn airport on it freezes with the black page,  "restart by holding power key . . ."  I swapped the airport extreme card with the one in my ibook G4 (purchased same date and running same OS).  No change in operation.
I am running wifi from verizon.  Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location.  Ibook running fine, desktop freezes.  If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked.  How do I fine the culprit?

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

  • Can't print with Airport Extreme

I am having trouble printing with Airport Extreme.
My printer is connected to the AE but every time I try to print I get a printer offline message.
I have tried in the past to print wirelessly but have given up.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro so I thought I would give it another go.
    Thank you.

Not very much to go on here but I'll give it a stab.
Go to the Airport Utility program located in Applications/Utilities folder.
Run this and select "manual setup" for your AE displayed on the left.
Hit the Printers icon on the top. Your shared printer should be displayed here. If it's not, then ensure it's powered on, good usb connection etc.
After this shows a usb printer connected then go to System Preferences>Print & Fax. You'll see printers you have setup before on the left. A green icon usually means they are available. If print doesn't work to the desired printer the best thing to do is remove the previous definitions by highlighting the printer and hitting the "-" icon.
Now hit the "+" sign and define the shared printer. It should be listed in the resulting "add Printer" dialog. Highlight, change any naming info and click "add".
Printer should now be available. I'm assuming a supported printer that have the device drivers loaded on your system.
    That's all I got.

  • Little Snitch sends outgoing requests with Airport off

Noob, just downloaded Little Snitch on MBP, getting familiar with background processes and shell scripts. Let x = variables.
LS is showing my mDNSResponder sending out a 225.etc request after I turn Airport off. No other machines on network are runing.
When I DLed Little Snitch and began running it, neither configd nor SystemUIServer were on the LS register. After restart, both showed up and have been sitting contentedly.
When Airport is on, Finder via nmblookup is sending a request to [x].255 about every minute that I have Safari open. When I turn Airport off, then back on, and I'm running LS, Safari to verisign connection shows up and configd connection shows up at ff[x:xx].
My concerns: Former employer is after my intellectual property. I had MBP connected on a daily basis to WiFi and certain sharing elements on with firewall off (stupid, I know, but I didn't know nad hadn't thought about it, and co. in question was pretty technologically dinosauric). Connected to same network by ethernet occasionally, and installed by disk a Windows partition and Open Office by disk given by employers' IT staff.
What's the possibility that a keystroke logger was put on my machine by an Admin of network I connected to, and is there any way to detect and disable said keylogger? Also, is there any way--outside of reverse-lookup, SPAM blacklisting sites--to check destinations of remote connections my comp might be making to an external server?

FWIW, mDNSResponder is the process responsible for [Bonjour|http://developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/faq.html], Apple's name for its implementation of the popular zero-configuration networking technology. (That's what allows your Mac to discover & use network printers, local servers, etc.) And as mentioned [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789], it is also used in Snow Leopard for unicast DNS resolution; without it, that OS cannot resolve hostnames like www.apple.com.
Likewise, [nmblookup|http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Referen ce/ManPages/man1/nmblookup.1.html] is the process that supports the OS X implementation of [Samba|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_(software)], which allows file & printer sharing between Windows & UNIX type OS's.
[configd|http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ ManPages/man8/configd.8.html] is an essential process that among many other things supplies the dynamic network port configurations that support the above & many other network processes.
So it is perfectly normal for these processes to periodically generate outbound network activity & by itself that does not mean a key logger is installed in your system.

  • Print with Airport Express

I've just buyed a new printer (HP Laserjet Pro 300 Color m351a) and installed new HP drivers in my Macbook Pro (with OSX 10.9 Mavericks) and when I connect the USB cable to the Airport Express (first model) to use it wireless I'm not able to see her in printer menu.
When I connect the printer directly to the Mac works fine
    Can anybody help me?

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the  AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at this iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link. If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if your printer is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • HP Deskjet F380 problem printing with airport extreme

Have tried everything under the sun from the apple and HP support websites and cannot get my printer to work wirelessly. When I try to add my printer, I get error message "-9672". Any other suggestions. Already spent 90 minutes on HP support and they gave me "their best effort", meaning they didn't think they could really help with outside products. Thanks.

Hello jds17. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations.
Take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
o 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.

  • Can't print with airport usb connection only

i have spent the last 3 days searching for help to fix my problem - PLEASE HELP!!!
    using:
    imac osx 10.6.8
    canon image class mf8350cdn
    airport extreme base station
I cannot seem to print wirelessly with my imac using just the USB connection on the airport router.  I can print with the printer locally when it's "hardwired" directly to a usb on the back of the imac.  I can print if i connect a cat5 network cable from the printer to the airport. i can print wirelessly with a PC when the printer is connected with a usb to the airport.  i just can't do this with my imac via the usb connection on the router.  my error message is a Canon CMFP Printer Driver telling me printer is not responding - check the power.....try sending again.
I believe i have tried everything!!!  While i am newer to mac and not the greatest at networking, i have manipulated every setting to match up with all of the online help i can get (trying to not have to send this question!!) and no luck.
i have deleted printers and jobs, reinstalled everything, i changed the cable, downloaded the latest drivers from canon and apple, i updated the firmware on the printer. i even reinstalled my osx and confirmed all is updated on my imac.
i don't want to scan or fax this way - so that is not my issue -- it's just plain old printing using that usb port.
i need all of my other ports on the airport for other things, so i cannot sacrific this one for printing - i just want to use the usb as my printer connection to print with all of the machines i have.
hope my question makes sense and that someone will take the time to give a reply.
    thanks!!
p.s. the closest discussion that matches my issue seems to be this one:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12367897#12367897
but, i still can't seem to get there..........

The most comprehensive set of troubleshooting instructions for printing problems involving Airport printers is found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107418
It is possible your printer simply cannot be made to work in this manner, and is more often than not a problem with multifunction printers.

  • HP PSC 1410 not printing with Airport Express

I have just purchased this printer. I'm running Tiger on a Powerbook G4.
When I set up the printer with a direct USB connection to my computer, the printer is added with the driver "HP All-in-One 3.0.1" automatically chosen. It works just fine.
When I plug in the printer to my Airport Express, the same All-in-One driver is automatically offered. I chose it, and the printer is added to my list of printers no problem. However, it just won't print. It tries to start the print job, and then the printer icon bounces in the dock with a big red exclamation mark. I try to click on start print job, and the same thing happens - it tries to start the job, but then just stops and the exclamation mark appears.
Does anyone know what might be wrong?
    Thanks
    Theresa

The PSC 1410 is not on the list of known compatible printers found at http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html - which may very well explain the problem.

  • HP printing with AirPort Extreme

I have a imac with Intel, OSX 10.6.  I am using a HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One printer, and have been for a few years and it has worked extremely well.  Earlier this year my old airport extreme went bad and I purchased the latest one.  It has the latest updates available.  When I got the new Airport Extreme the directions said to plug the printer via USB cable into the Airport.  I have been through the system preferences, deleted and added the printer, went through the manual set-up for the Airport Extreme, rebooted everything and it will NOT print.  The Airport Utilities recognizes the printer and it tries to print and stops giving me a message of "Printer Paused", or printer offline.  When I hit "resume", the printer cycles a bit and them goes to "Printer Paused" again.  Everything worked great until I purchased the new Airport Extreme.
The printer works excellent when plugged into the back of my imac, however, it does not make my wife happy because she can't print from her laptop.  My Son brought a friend home with him for the weekend that is a Software Engineer.  He downloaded software and drivers and installed them and he could not get it to print with the USB cable plugged into the Airport either.  He worked with it for 4 hours.  The HP printer just will not communicate with the Airport.  I have also been getting a message this evening that one of my ink cartridges has expired.  I can shake it and it appears to be almost full.  I opened a new one and get the same message that it is expired.  I have had the new one for several months though because I hate running out of ink.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I am not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to setting this stuff up.  I was hooking the printer up to the Airport Extreme because the set-up instructions said to.  When the software engineer was here, he could not get the wireless on the printer to find the Airport Extreme.  The kid is pretty sharp but was under a lot of pressure to get done so that he and my Son could get on the road.  He wasn't expecting to get into the hassles of setting this up.
This is probably mostly because of the name I have given to the Extreme being too long and not remembering, or KNOWING anything about this.  I have given the Extreme one name and the network another.  I don't know where the set-up instructions are and he was trying to guess.  I just tried doing as you said to make the printer wireless but failed for the same reasons he did.  I got a message to go back and check the set-up.  I am not sure what I am supposed to check for.   I guess I will have to change some of the set-up information on the router as far as naming the router and network.
When I got this pinter I did not have v.10.6 on the imac at the time.  However, when I downloaded the software from HP, it was for 10.6 and 10.7.   I just a few minutes ago got the printer to work with the USB cable plugged into the computer, actually a USB hub.  Just a few minutes after i got the printer working by hooking it to the USB hub, a software update popped up for a HP printer update.  For a bit of information, I have had problems with concentration since several war injuries in Viet Nam and I get lost easily.  I don't mean to use this as an excuse, just explaining that I will be a bit slow following you.  I was a Senior Radio Repairman and Communications Chief in the Army and head of the Crypto Center.  Now I feel like a lost ball in high weeds.  I can still work things out by reasoning to an extent, but sometimes it is very frustrating, so I ask that you bear with me.

  • Printing with Border off centre

When i try to print a 4x6 print with a border the print module is putting the following minimum margins: L 0.35 R 0.32 T 0.28 B 0.53 so the rpint is off centre. I can't make these any smaller and making them all 0.53 looks to big. Any ideas it doesn't put the image centrally?
I tried resizing the image in PSE5 editor to exacly 4x6 but made no difference.

I tried borderless and it does set the margins to zero. However when I put in 0.2 cm and print it doesn't come out quite right. Looks fine on the LR preview. Cell dimension in LR are correct at 14.84x9.76 but actual print is 14.6 x 9.8 and sightly off centre (L 0.15 R 0.25).
This is much better than I was getting as had a look in the Canon print properties and under Page Layout in the Borderless section there is a slider "Amount of Extension". I set this to the left so the minimum and got a big improvement.
That's close enough to be usable at least tks Jao

  • Printing with Airport Express: never compeletes

    Hi,
I have an HP Deskjet 5740 connected over my Airport Express.
Printing works fine except for one very annoying issue: after the job is done the task is still in the printer's queue, and the activity light on the printer does not stop blinking.
When you look at the printer window under XP, it shows a weird "pages" count, like 4/1 when printing one single page.
In order to print something else you need to cancel the job manually from the printer tray.
    Can somebody please help me?
    Thank you

I am having the exact same problem with Airport Extreme.
Hp 6540 printer talks perfectly to iBook but has this problem from Dell desktop.
Hp support neither Mac or Windows could offer any help.

  • Problem printing with airport

    Hi there!
I've got two Mac's at home and Airport Express for the Airtunes and Internet access working as my family network. Decided to buy a printer two days ago and start using it across my airport usb hub but it's not working well.
Though some times it print out without problems, several times it start printing to stop in the middle pausing the printer without notification. Afterward I push start again it cancel the job and stop printing, so I had to uninstall the software and reinstall it several times.
    But that it's annoying.
I thought the printer machine was not working well but I've printed it using the usb connection directly to any of my Mac's and haven't had problems doing it that way.
The printer it's a easy one, for house use more exactly HP DeskJet 2660.
Is there any body who can help me solving out this issue?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Print with airport express from ipad

I have airport express and i will print with my ipad, but it doesn`t work. Can you help me?

ipad cannot print to USB printer. It has to be airprint.
There is a way around it. Use a printer app like Printopia on the iMac to handle the airprint protocols.
There are several apps available and I don't use it so do a quick google for reviews of the best.

  • Printing with airport

I can't print to my new HP printer thru the airport express. Printer works fine hard wired to USB port on MacBook. MacBook sees the printer thru the airport but will not print. I have downloaded all firmaware updates, and I think I have done what I have to do with the Airport Admin Utility and Print/Fax preferences. Airport works fine with www work??????
    MACBOOK   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try to plug in the printer to the usb on the express and then pull the power adaapter from the printer for a minute and then plug it back in.
next shut your computer clear off and then restart it after a minute or so.
Then come back and tell us if that worked.
This is a reset of the printer and the computer.
