Println and printf

What is difference between
System.out.println() and System.out.printf() methods?

printf is formatted printing with a format argument (with or without locale), along the lines of the C standard library's well-known and appreciated printf feature, in Java since 1.5, println is printing with new line, in Java since "ever".

    Sir,
    i wana know the diff between System.out.println() and println plz help in this regard. how they work in jsp .
    thanks

    Hi
    System.out.println is a method of PrintStream in IO which is used to print the output on console in java progs.Here in jsp ,the o/p is printed on server's console window.But out.println is totally different as, out is implicit object derived from JspWriter and is used sly to PrinWriter 's object is used in servlets.It's work is to write upon Browser.
    System.out.println() is normally used in jsp for debugging purposes only.

  • What is the difference between System.out.println() and System.out.print()?

    Hi everyone,
    I am only a new comer and know very little about Java. I will appreciate a lot if anyone teaches me what the difference between two method println and print is? Thank you so much.

    The PrintStream class defines a number of print() methods that ... print
    things. System.out is a commonly used PrintStream.
    The difference between the print(...) and println(...) methods is that the
    second one prints a new line at the end. What it actually prints varies
    from system to system: sometimes it will output a '\n' sometimes not.
    There is a system property called line.separator that determines
    how a new line is output.

  • Difference between System.out.println() and out.println()

    Hi,
    In JSP we want to write the JNLP file contents to a ouput stream using "out.printl()".
    The content of the JNLP file i am having in a String.
    The "System.out.println()" is printing the correct JNLP file contents but "out.println()" writing wrong contents which are taken from Server JNLP file.
    How to solve this problem?
    Please guide me in this.
    Thanks and Regards:
    Dheeraj

    Where is the "System.out.println()" running from? I don't think your problem has anything to do with the difference between System.out.println and out.println. Both methods print what is passed to them. It sounds like you are printing two different files because you are running in two different environments.
    JSPs run on a server and only have access to files on the server or on a network the server is on. If you are trying to print a file on a user's system, JSP can't do it.

  • System.out.println and Network Adapter problem

    Hello,
    I am encountering a 2 strange problems. I have 2 oracle application server instances, one dev and one production.
    The first problem is when I type System.out.println in the JSP's i am able to see the output in both \opmn\logs\oc4jinstance. But the System.out.println in the java classes or bean show up only in development logs but not in production box.
    Is there a setting I am missing here?
    The second problem is on our development machine the application works fine, but as soon as we deploy the application on production I encounter:
    could not open new connection: Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
    I have a class called DBUtils, which uses a 3rd party library to get connections from the connection pool as below. Using JSP I call the getConnection(). On my dev Oracle Application Server Instance it works fine, but on production I get the error. Can it be there is a setting that I am missing on the production box?
    When I use a JSP and connect to the database without using the DBUtil class. I can connect to the database fine. Also using the DBUtil class with production oracle IP address on the development machine lets me connect with no problem, but production machine does not let me.
    public class DBUtils {
    static ConnectionPoolBean pool;
    static {
    System.out.println("DBUtils() - before connection pool bean");
    pool = new ConnectionPoolBean();
    pool.setDriverClassName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    pool.setdbURL("jdbc:oracle:thin:@IPADDRESS:PORT:SID");
    pool.setUser("USERNAME");
    pool.setPassword("PASSWORD");
    pool.setInitialConnections(1);
    pool.setIncrement(1);
    pool.setSoftMaxConnections(40);
    public static Connection getConnection() throws SQLException {
    System.out.println("Getting Oracle Connection");
    return pool.getConnection();
    public static void returnConnection(Connection conn) throws SQLException {
    System.out.println("Returning Connection");
    pool.returnConnection(conn);
    Thanks for your help in advance.

  • What is the different  between System.out.println and out.print

    we move a project , jsp form to servlet to mysql db
    suddenly we get Chinese input problem
    on meantime only Thing I know is
    if( chineseName!=null) {
                           chineseName= new String( chineseName.getBytes("ISO-8859-1"),"UTF-8");
                         out.print(chineseName); //display Chinese
                          System.out.println("Hello1"+chineseName ); // display unread symbol
                 }I don't know why when we insert the value into db by StudentInsert(university_ID, surName, english_Name, chineseName, Address)
    the db get the value from System.out.println
    what setting decide my out put through System.out.println

    Thank you for the reply!
    after two days of search and guess.... I found out
    for Web application , which under glassfish , you need to put your jsp page under WEB-INF,
    other wise the server jsp turn your Chinese character that come from jsp request form to UTF8 symbol.
    not ideal how to change the configuration in glassfish yet!

  • Question: pthread_cancel() and printf()

    Hello!
    First of all, sorry for my English, I'm not an English native speaker.
    I know, that printf() function uses write() function. "man cancellation" says that write() function is a cancellation point. But when I call pthread_cancel() for my thread, which calls printf() in infinite cycle, it doesn't cancel! It means there are no cancellation points in printf(). But how is it possible? write() is a cancellation point, printf() uses write() and there are no cancellation points in printf()... I'm confused...
    Could anybody please explain to me what the matter is?

  • System.out.println and EJBs

    Hi,
    I'm trying to develop an application that has 2 main components:
    1) A stateless session EJB, which is called by the container timer service periodically and makes some DB uptades.
    2) A servlet which basically calls the create method in the EJB.
    I've implemented a prototype of the app and the servlet code looks like this:
    try {
    Context context = new InitialContext();
    MyClassLocalHome home = (MyClassLocalHome)PortableRemoteObject.narrow(
                   context.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/MyClass"),
              MyClassLocalHome.class);
    System.out.println("Narrowed");
    MyClassLocal timer;
    // create a new instance
    timer = home.create();
    System.out.println("Created!");
    In the ejbCreate() in MyClass callback, all I have is a System.out.println("ejbCreate() called") to show the method was called.
    My problem is the even though the servlet code runs without errors and I can see the output in the application server's SystemOut.log, I can't find "ejbCreate() called" message. Am I looking in the wrong place? Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks in advance.
    Pedro

    Hi Pedro,
    You're not necessarily doing something wrong. Where are you actually invoking a business method on the Stateless Session bean? In the Stateless Session Bean lifecycle, the actual bean instance creation is not required to be linked to the Home.create() call. That's because Stateless Session bean instances have no client-specific state. The container can delay the bean instance creation until an actual business method is called. Only then would the bean instance's ejbCreate method be called.

  • System.out.println and OAS

    Hello All,
    I have few System.out.println statements in my J2EE application which is running on OAS. I'm not sure where it is writing. I couldn't find anything in the server.log. Really appreciate any ideas.
    Thanks

    I know this is a couple of months old but it's a useful tip for anyone else having the same problem.
    You can't see the System.out.println statements in any logs through the administration web pages of the OAS. You have to go through the filesystem, which is annoying and in my opinion a massive error by Oracle. But never mind.
    The filepath is:
    %ORACLE_HOME%/opmn/logs/default_group~***~default_group~1.log
    replace *** with the name of your oc4j instance

  • WinDbg and .printf and floating-numbers

    It seems that a floating-number is not correctly displayed in WinDbg using the ".printf" command.
    Simple example: Variable "double d = 2.3";
    Output this variable in WinDbg always gives "0.00000"
    Here is the comand I used:
    .printf "%f",@@c++(d)
    Also using the (correct 64-Bit) command has the same effect:
    .printf "%lf",@@c++(d)
    If I use the "integer" formatting then at least the first part of the number is displayed:
    .printf "%d",@@c++(d)
    I have tried several different WInDbg versions... it seems thet it does not work... it always outputs zero...
    Any solution to this????
    Jochen Kalmbach (MVP VC++)

    I realize this was asked awhile ago but just saw it while looking for something else. I found through some experimentation that this seems to work for double:
    .printf "%lf", qwo(@@(&d))
    I'm not sure if something similar works for 32-bit float or not. I'm also not sure why it doesn't just work with the simpler syntax in the original post... maybe a bug?
    Hope this helps,
    Jon

  • System.out.println and log file

              I am developing jsp on BEA Weblogic 613 on Solaris.
              What if i run the following statement
              System.out.println("Hello world");
              I understand that Hello World will be printed to the server console. I do not
              have access to this console. Is there any log file or temporary log file it gets
              sent to? If not, is there anyway to redirect output from the console to someplace
              else?
              Thanks!

    You can redirect console output for stdout on Solaris like so:
              java weblogic.Server > consoleoutput.txt
              then in a terminal window you can see whats going on with
              tail -f consoleoutput.txt

  • Bug on terminal when using C's scanf and printf?

    Hi, I'm studying C and C++ and i used to compile my files on linux and use the terminal to work with the standard i/o, but now I'm using emacs on mac and using the same method for the standard i/o (terminal), but i noticed that 'long double' values for example, are (apparently) too big for the terminal (i guess) and it can't handle the size of the output generated by my program. I Know my question might be a bit confusing but i've had a hard time looking for related topics.
    Does anybody know what can i do?
    Thanks.

    Thanks BobHarris for your reply, I think i might have found the problem, the values i was working with are 64-bit and the terminal is a 32-bit application, so, basically the terminal can't handle it and that's what's been giving me trouble, now, my question should change, How can i get a 64-bit Terminal?
    (I know that in some linux distributions you can do that).
    thank you.

  • Trying to pass arguments into a method call and failing

    Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to programming, and newer to Java. I'm currently working on a project that pulls fields from a database based on a name, and I'm having some trouble getting the connection string set up.
    Statically defined, the database connects and the program logic that follows works just fine. The problem is that to future-proof this application, I need to pass the database URL, port, db instance, username, and password into the program as arguments from the batch file that will then be scheduled to run the program on a job-by-job basis.
    Product Version: NetBeans IDE 6.1 (Build 200805300101)
    Java: 1.6.0_06; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 10.0-b22
    System: Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb)
    Userdir: C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxxxxxxx.SPROPANE\.netbeans\6.1
    Here's my current working source (with the network addresses obfuscated):
    package processsqrjob;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.Date;
    public class Main {
         * @param args jobname, jobparameters, HYPusername, HYPpassword, HYPservername, HYPport, oracleDBURL, oracleport (default 1512), SID (dbb?), oracleusername, oraclepass
         * @throws exeption
        // jobname [0], jobparams[1], hypusername [2], hyppassword [3], hypservername [4], hypport[5], oracledburl[6], oracleport[7], sid[8], oracleusername[9], oraclepass[10]
        public static void main(String[] args) throws SQLException
            DriverManager.registerDriver (new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
            Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@oracleserver.local.intranet.com:1521:dbname", "username", "pass");
            Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
            Date date = new Date(); //get the system date for output to both the error log and the DB's lastrun field
            System.out.println(date); //print the date out to the console
            System.out.println(args[0]); //print the job name to the console
            String sourcefolder=""; //we're going to load the job source folder into this variable based on the job's name
            String destfolder="";//same with this variable, except it's going to get the destination folder
            try {
                ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM myschema.jobs WHERE NAME =\'"+args[0]+"\'");
                while ( rs.next() ) {
                    sourcefolder = rs.getString("sourcefolder");
                    destfolder = rs.getString("destfolder");
                stmt.executeQuery("UPDATE myschema.jobs SET lastrun ='"+date+"' WHERE name ='"+args[0]+"'");//put this after hyp code
    //            System.out.println(sourcefolder);
    //            System.out.println(destfolder);
    //            System.out.println(description);
                stmt.close(); //close up the socket to prevent leaks
            }catch(SQLException ex){
                System.err.println("SQLException: " + ex.getMessage());
                logError(args[0], ex.getMessage());
    }That works, and it connects to the database and everything. But when I pass the variables in from the project properties run settings, I get the following exception:

    Perhaps it's the way I'm escaping the quotation marks, but I put that same line inside a System.out.println() and it output it exactly as I had typed it in statically before, so I don't know what it could be.
    I would really appreciate any advice. I think you're mixing up SQL and Java. The Java method expects the user name and password as separate parameters, not encoded in one String. So you shouldn't be concatenating args[9] and args[10] at all, they should remain as separate parameters.
    The call should be:DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + args[6] + ":"+ args[7] + ":" + args[8], args[9], args[10]);
                                                     parameter 1                                  2         3

  • Avoiding html codes and javascript codes in servlets

    Are there ways to avoid long html codes using out.println() and also javascript codes in servlets? Can I make a jsp and include that file somehow in the servlet and do the processing. Can I get reference to the fields or components declared in the jsp and also do conditional flow based on the buttons present in that jsp.
    Is it possible to include javascript files and instead call that javascript file and also the particular function in that file?
    Please also mention disadvantages if any.

    Javascript is for the client ONLY. Even if you could find a way to use it on the server side, DON'T.
    In my opinion, you should have ZERO logic (except for validation via JavaScript) in your JSP. Have a Servlet do all logic/business rules. The Servlet will create one or more Java Beans that hold ALL dynamic content for a page. Use the Servlets RequestDispatcher to forward the request to the JSP upon completion. The JSP should do nothing more than grab these beans (from the HttpSession object) and fill in the dynamic parts of the page.
    By doing it this way, you seperate the logic and presentation. You can add different 'flavors' (WML, XML) by simplying creating a new JSP page that looks for the same Java Beans, but has different template text.
