Private Browsing & Cookies - Safari 3.0.4 on Leopard 10.5.1

FYI: turning on private browsing automatically changes the cookies security setting.
For example:
If cookies are set to 'never' and then private browsing is enabled; then cookies will change to 'only from sites you navigate to'.
If cookies are set to 'only from sites you navigate to' and private browsing is enabled; then cookies will change to 'never'.
When private browsing is disable the cookies setting changes back to the original setting.
I have confirmed this on two 10.5.1 systems.
This doesn't seem right. Private Browsing shouldn't be changing security sittings? I don't believe things worked this way on 10.4.x and Safari 2, someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I had this problem as well.
First: In Safari go into preferences and select the "security" tab. Uncheck "Enable Plug-ins"
This fixed a lot of bugs for me !
Second: If that worked than you just need to go to Hard Drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
There should be a folder there that is called "Disabled Plug-Ins" I just put all of the plug-ins in that folder, went back and rechecked " Enable Plug-Ins" in Safari preferences, and then one by one added plug-ins back out of the disabled folder while reloading a web page that caused problems before. After some trial & error I think I have a setup that works for now. Hope this helps!! Also as of now I have installed all software updates. My mac has been doing this for a while. Logging out & back in reset safari back to where it was useable.
I have not had problems with any other programs.

  • Why when using private browsing does Safari still remember websites visited?

Even when private browsing is selected on my MacBook and iPad2, websites visited are remembered and displayed in history.  Why is this?

    Hi Graham,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  Is it possible that you have some Safari windows open as private browsing, and others not?  See the overview of private browsing below (see the note I've highlighted in bold):
Safari 8 (Yosemite): Use Private Browsing windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19216
Use Private Browsing windows in Safari
When you use Private Browsing windows, Safari doesn’t save your browsing history, and it asks websites you visit not to track you.
    Use Private Browsing:
Choose File > New Private Window, or switch to a Safari window that’s already using Private Browsing. A window that’s using Private Browsing has a dark address and search field with white text.
When you use a Private Browsing window:
Each tab in the window is isolated from the others, so websites you view in one tab can’t track your browsing in other tabs.
Safari doesn’t remember the webpages you visit or your AutoFill information.
Safari doesn’t store your open webpages in iCloud, so they aren’t shown when you view all your open tabs from other devices.
Your recent searches aren’t included in the results list when you use the address and search field.
Items you download aren’t included in the downloads list. (The items do remain on your computer.
Safari doesn’t remember changes to your cookies or other website data. Safari also asks websites and others who provide those sites with content (including advertisers) not to keep track of your browsing, although it is up to the websites to honor this request.
Plug-ins that support Private Browsing stop storing cookies and other tracking information.
Websites can’t modify information stored on your device, so services normally available at such sites may work differently until you turn off Private Browsing.
Note:   None of the above applies in other Safari windows you may have open that don’t use Private Browsing.
    Stop using Private Browsing:
Close the Private Browsing window, switch to a different Safari window that isn’t using Private Browsing, or choose File > New Window to open a window that doesn’t use Private Browsing. To further enhance privacy:
Delete any items you downloaded while using Private Browsing windows.
Close any other Private Browsing windows that are still open, to prevent others from using the Back and Forward buttons to see pages you visited in them.
Besides using Private Browsing windows, you can manage cookies and data stored by all websites and have Safari ask all websites not to track you.
If you forget to use a Private Browsing window, you can clear your browsing history.

  • I have an iPhone 4s.  Ever since I updated to the 7.1 iOS, I am not able to find "Private Browsing" in safari.  Does anyone know where they moved this function to?

I used to see the "Private" in the bottom left cornor of the Bookmarks function when I would go to select a bookmark or retrace my history in Safari.  Now I cannot find it anymore.  I also am not able to "Clear" my safari history unless I go through several steps, instead of being able to just hit the "Clear" on the bottom right hand corner in Bookmarks, which is still there, but I cannot select it.  Is anyone else having this problem and does anyone know how to fix it?

    Hi Angela,
I have an iPhone 4 with 7.1, but I'm seeing the same Private indicator for both the Reading List and the Web page list.
When you say you have to go through several steps to clear your History, are you talking about doing it via Settings>Safari? If not, then that would at least be a fairly quick way to do it.
Since Private is not showing for you on either the Reading list or the Web page list, try a reset on your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, go back into Safari and see if anything has changed.
In the mean time, I'm going to continue to look around to see if there is something that controls that (like enable "Private Browsing"....or something along those lines). I'll post back if I find anything....
    Cheers,

  • Permanent private browsing in safari 6

Is it possible to permanently leave private browsing on in safari 6 in os x mountaion lion. i ask beacuase i know you can leave it on permanently in ios 6 until you manually turn it off. where as in os x it turns off when you quit the app. is there a way of making it stay on until you desire to turn it off in os x

I too would like to know how to do this.  I do not beleive it is possible the way that it is set up, but hopefully Apple can make the Private Bbrowsing feature stay on even after you close Safari just like t does in iOS 6/7.  The only real work-around for this is lie CT says, don't quit Safari.  The problem is that if you shutdown or restart it auto-turns off.

When private browsing is enabled in Safari, searches done with Siri still show up in the "recent searches" menu of the search box.
Is this a bug? Or is there a way to prevent "Siri searches" from showing up in the recent searches list?
This does not happen when I type my search, but sometimes it's quicker to search for something with Siri.
