Private browsing, google history

Heres a good question that i can not find an anwser too, using safri on the ipad when I have private browsing on, why do web sites or searches still show up in googles history even tho i am not logged in?

Private Browsing just means that when you close Safari, the app will not remember the webpages you visited. Individual websites may still keep track. Private Browsing does not stop Google from tracking you.

Restore History after Crash while using Private Browsing?
I always find this great site w/ info I needed; then "POOF" it's gone...
Backtracking your steps does not always work either...

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.

  • How do I disable the ability for private browsing/clear history?

I do not want my children to have the ability to use private browsing or clear their history. I want it saved so I can view it, but I don't want them to be able to prevent that. What can I do?

    iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1
Turning on Safari private mode in settings -> switch to Safari -> Enter a google search -> Turn private mode off -> Search is still in history!!
This is *NOT* private. If this is a bug is anyone else experiencing it?
    Apple please fix!!

Try using a different browser such as Firefox.

From the Firefox menu bar click Firefox / Preferences then select the Privacy tab.

  • I want to remove the Private Browsing function as a Parental Control step. How?

I don't want my child hiding things from me. How do I block or remove the Private Browsing functionality?

You wouldn't be able to do it as long as the user has access to [[Profile folder]], lack of which makes Firefox not able to work - the user would be able to delete any data. Even prior to private browsing feature, history was clear-able in ''Tools'' - '' Clear recent history'' window.
To have more control, you can block some websites/ports in the router or firewall, the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4351/ FoxFilter] add-on can be helpful (but again, the users can simply un-install it).

  • Questions on privacy and safari, browser history; top sites; private browsi

In one thread someone suggested that those concerned about the privacy of their web browsing and its history try Private Browsing. What are the consequences of Private Browsing? Does Private Browsing interfere with some of the web page features or javascript from working when I'm trying to access a page that has java or Flash? Will my bank's website load ok etc? I guess I was a little worried it would stop the showing of the last page visited and if so then hopefully that won't stop some sites from functioning.
Is Private Browsing the best way to go all around for those concerned about privacy loss in Safari or does it not really help much? I wonder why it isn't the default.
I want to be able to use my browser to access sites that don't load well when I use Firefox with NoScript, such as bank sites, but I do not want my browsing history to stay in view constantly, and I'm also upset at seeing it want to "learn" my browsing habits and try to suggest sites for me without my setting it to do this.
For this reason I will be setting Firefox or any other browser I feel is more private than Safari, possibly Camino, to be my default browser. I will probably only be using Safari when a site won't work without it, same as when I used to settle for Internet Explorer on my windows computer when Firefox didn't work.
I'm also concerned that I can't get that Google search bar out of my browser. I don't want Google keeping tabs of every site I visit. I'm not sure if Google has access to tracking every place I go if I never put any text into the Google search bar or how far into bed with Google Apple has now gone but I'm afraid of the privacy invasion possibilities.
Perhaps Google gets no info if I do not type anything into the google search bar. I wish I could drag it off the menu bar however. (If I want to go to google, I know how to type google.com for crying out loud).
I hope Apple will hold the line on its partners re: privacy in products like iPhone and Safari that work with its partners regardless of their tendencies to disrespect privacy.
Does anyone know if the fact that this Safari software wants to learn what my favorite sites are affects outside parties including Apple, Google, and/or others possibly getting access to info on my browsing habits?
If i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
Does hitting RESET clear things out in this regard? I'd like to use these tools if I could be sure that using Safari doesn't turn the computer into a spyware tool for outside entities, commercial interests and governmental interests to mine data from.

    Hello r:
If you think Safari, Firefox, or anything else will mask your browsing habits from someone who really wants to know, you are not being realistic.
I tend to discount justifications of privacy encroachments I sometimes encounter to the effect of "snooping is done by certain commercial and governmental parties as the way things 'just are', so shut up and don't worry". Customers who do not air their concerns and questions cannot have any expectation that the developer will be aware of their concern if they sit mute.
I sometimes pay for additional software to protect my privacy. I also use Firefox with Noscript and adblocking third party software rather than just sit with what the big corporations leave me with; there is a third party program for Safari I tried called PithHelmet for example, but then it seemed to not be loaded with the new Safari update and its developer dud not provide me any communication (although I got help here on how to find the program so I could remove it); so I may not use Safari as much compared to whatever browser I find has better privacy and security measures.
If you go to the Safari help menu and enter +"private browsing,"+ you will find a complete description of what that function does for you. In answer to one of your questions, it is not a default because one loses a good deal of functionality. I would be most perturbed if that was made the default.
Ok, I will try to learn the functionalities lost, thanks.
You can set the history to be deleted after one day (or longer). If you are concerned, it is quite easy to clear history before you sign off.<</div>
I've been using RESET to clear my history in the past; I assume it still works although Reset doesn't seem to permanently make certain cookies with future expiration dates go away permanently, which I find come back later even without my visiting a site for weeks and this was happening in the previous version of Safari too.
You can remove the Google search box (or anything else) from the menu bar. Right click on it. One option is +"remove item."+
That doesn't work in terms of just removing the Google search bar at the top right, I see.
I did not want to lose my blank for typing a URL; I only want the thing out to the right that says Google on it, which seems to use Google's search engine to go away. I certainly hope that every time I type a URL into the blank at the left top (which is not the part over to the top right that says Google and a magnifying glass) that I'm not having Google track my URLs I visit like they would if I put a search term into the blank at the top right, but maybe it does since the two are forcibly linked.
I guess I'd have to try Command L - Open Location in the Find menu if I want to try to go to a URL without using the URL blank at the top left I normally type in. I would only want to go to that trouble if typing in the top left blank for URLs results in Google tracking my URL visits like they certainly would if I typed in the top right google tool bar and hopefully Open Location does not result in the same issue.
if i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
I seriously doubt that Apple (or anyone else) is "reporting" anything about you to anyone. As you are no doubt aware, most web sites store cookies on your system when you visit that site. The information stored varies, but you can, of course, block cookies if you wish.
I have the ability to block cookies, and I use Noscript a lot too with Firefox (although that set up does not always work with a few webpages here and there, so sometimes I have to use Safari or Camino). I use Safari less and less because there is no Noscript type of third party software for it. The only time I feel I have no choice but to use Safari on my Mac is when I go to my Mobileme account.
My concern is of Top Sites "learning" my favorite sites and displaying to me the names of a lot of suggested URLs, as to who else is receiving that data; hopefully no one. Maybe I'll get to where i find info explaining that Apple and Google aren't collecting data about my "top sites" if I use that feature.
It's just that there has been an increasing amount of privacy intrusion in the commercial realm combined with a corporate arrogance in terms treating consumers as though there is no need to make any assurances or explanations to consumers to help them trust the privacy. Instead we get browbeaten by various parties about how stupid or obvious we are if we ask a question to remind the corporation it's an issue to those of us who want to feel comfortable with the privacy of the software we use.
I'll try to use the Feedback form to ask as well.
At the risk of stating the obvious, it is quite easy to find out all sorts of information about an individual if one is interested. If you are really concerned, I suggest you severely limit your use of the Internet.
I may well limit my use of the internet if what you say is true that there is no way to do any reading on the internet without being spied on by commercial and governmental interests.
    thanks

    Question
When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. When I swap to private browsing firefox allows me to anter the website address directly into the location bar - but this is a slow [prcess to swap back and forth - also by dint of using private browsing I loose my website information.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Is there a way to look at history IF it is done on private browsing?

Here is my dilemma...In point blank terms, My partner has an IPAD 3...and has a serious problem looking at ****..and then clearing his history... I have gone into Safari,-advanced-web data and found all the websites that are visited.  After confronting the jerk, I KNOW now that he is either deleting each **** website manually OR private browsing them.  I have already disabled safari, but that doesn't work because by doing that one cannot even get on Yahoo!! So I am sick of the promises that he isn't not looking...I just need to know if he is lying..which my gut tells me, if you want something bad enough, you will find a way...
My gut also tells me, that there is got to be a way for me to check...I need step by step instructions from anyone who has figured out all aspects of an IPAD 3..
--I want to know how to "see" what he has privately browsed
--I want to know how to "see" what he has deleted
--I  want to know if being his IPhone 5s and Ipad 3 are synced, is what I have found on the Iphone (**** sites) but they are NOT on the Ipad, so does that mean he browsed privately, but forgot to click on "private" on the Iphone?
--I also want to know if I synced both of our IPads, will what he looks at thru safari privately or not show up on my IPad Air? (most likely not, but I need to ask)
I do not want to put ssome secret "app", in this day and age, there has got to be ins and outs of finding out deleted and private history..I just need the steps from step 1, real simple like so I can understand and do them...
I would so appreciate anyones help...this is twisting my gut in a knot...and its affecting all things...what I hate more than a partner looking at ****, is the LIE..I just need to know so I can be at peace...Thanks to all in advance...

And to answer the tecnical aspects of your post in detail:
--I want to know how to "see" what he has privately browsed
    You can't.
-I want to know how to "see" what he has deleted.
    You can't.
--I  want to know if being his IPhone 5s and Ipad 3 are synced, is what I have found on the Iphone (**** sites) but they are NOT on the Ipad, so does that mean he browsed privately, but forgot to click on "private" on the Iphone?   --
What is browsed on one device has nothing to do with what is browsed on any other device. If you see something in a browser history in the iPhone, then either he didn't click "private" or didn't clear the history on that device.
I also want to know if I synced both of our IPads, will what he looks at thru safari privately or not show up on my IPad Air? (most likely not, but I need to ask)
No. Again, browser history is not synced to other devices.
If he's surfing and either using Private Browsing or clearing the history, then there's no way you can see what sites he's visited. You'll just have to decide how to deal with that from there.
    Regards.

  • After upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, Firefox lost all my stored passwords, never asks to save them, even though I've checked box for saving them, have made sure history is not cleared, and am not in Private Browsing.

In Windows 7, Firefox 8.0 does not ask to save passwords, and does not save, them, even though I checked the box to save passwords. I have confirmed that clearing history is not on and that I am not in Private Browsing. This is so frustrating, it almost makes me want to go back to Vista. I have looked at all the suggestions to fix the problem in "Help" and have followed the suggestions, and none of them help.

I have the TX2 1012NR and its can upgrade just fine!  Here is a few recommendations "only if u have the HP Upgrade program disks"
If you have them you can install a clean copy and delete everything... Do not use the use me first disk included because it prompts you to install an older BIOS....  Just use the windows 7 upgrade disk and start the process.  The clean install clears your entire drive but does not void your warranty!   When you use the use me first disk after the install it actually loads everything else needed to get you up in running.  The touchscreen driver and the HP Mediasmart programs will have to be downloaded from the HP support site.  Once again its recommended that if there were any programs installed delete them do not try to update them!  This causes issues and countless errors.  Specifically with touchscreen drivers etc uninstall them before installing the ones from HP support.  I found this was not the easy way to do it but the best way...  I also recommend that when doing any sort of BIOS update that you remove your Battery and leave it connected to a power cord only!  Last but not least if you really mess up and its under warranty... Send it to HP they will set it back up to factory defaults under Windows Vista with the more up to date BIOS installed.  I hope my information helps! Sure you might loose some programs but in the end your computer runs faster and smoother because all the programs installed are made for Windows 7....  Also they did release the Touch Pack for download from the Microsoft website here is a link telling more about the features and benefits and how to get it as it is a totally free download...

  • How can I stop Private Browsing from retaining history of websites visited?

Whenever I go into "Private Browsing" and start to type in - www, a history of websites visited comes up. I thought that in Private Browsing, history was not retained!

<u>New</u> history is not kept, but existing history from normal mode is still there and can be accessed if you are in [[Private Browsing]] mode.<br />
If you want to prevent that then you need to clear the history after you enter ''Private Browsing'' mode.

  • Why is Private Browsing better than just clearing History daily?

I heard that you should do your online banking and other financial activities in Private Browsing mode. I always clear history when I turn off the computer anyway. And getting the Private Browsing to accept my previously bookmarked locations has been unsuccessful. I can re-bookmark from Private Browsing, of course. But I just wondered if this is really necessary, or more for folks with computers on networks, or shared computers?
You may not get at my computer--troubleshooting information. I'm using Windows 7 operating system and the latest version of Mozilla Firefox.

You aren't on the latest version of Firefox, please update to Firefox 22 [[Update Firefox to the latest version]] (you are on Firefox 21).
There is no real difference between using Private Browsing and clearing your history everyday, it's just personal preference around workflows.

  • I cant delete history or select private browsing on ipad air i0S 7.1.2

I Noticed that i cannot clear my history nor can i select private browsing after updating ipad air to 7.1.2 OS.
anyone else have this issue and if so can you help me out
    thanks

Assuming that you know how to do both things and the iPad is not cooperating for some reason, close Safari completely and reset your iPad.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If you don't know how to select Private Browsing, simply begin typing in the Safari URL field and you will see the word Private above the keyboard in the lower left part of the screen. Tap that to turn on Private Browsing.
