/private/var/tmp running full with cache

We're importing a lot of JPEG and Photoshop pictures and in a big job the folder /var/tmp (locally on the FCServer, who is also the only Compressor) is running full with cache files.
A lot of these:

As you can see, big files.. So big that the last 2 days my server startup HD filled almost full (1 GB left).
So it looks like FCServer is not cleaning up after his self. Can I do something about this? At least change the max caches size?
Thanks

Hi,
It was a corrupted PSD, one file corrupt all the other ones after that one also failed.... we removed the corrupt one and 'Analyze' all the other ones.
Problem solved??

  • /private/var/tmp has gone missing!  ***?!?!?!?

Please, I need help on this one. I had an iBook G4 crash on me, then get as far as the white Apple screen with pinwheel before freezing. I tried running Disk Utility off of an OS X install disk, and it found no volume structure errors. However, when I tried repairing permissions on it, Disk Utility was reporting that the directory /private/var/tmp has gone missing, and it could not repair permissions.
What gives? How can the whole directory get fried? How can I replace it? I've already tried doing an archive and install, but the OS X installed won't let me do an archive and install, probably because this folder is missing.
    Can anyone help?

Get Prosoft Data Rescue to recover the data to an external hard disk. Shut down the computer, disconnect the drive any other third party peripherals and then next after that do an erase and install of the operating system. You will probably want to use a CD burner to burn off less frequently used data on occasion at least a couple times so that your hard drive does not fill up with unessential stuff. Some more tips on backing up are on this page:

  • Upgraded to Mavericks - System errors popping up in /private/var/tmp ... Help!!

    Hi there,
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, and installed my standard software, I'm getting some odd behaviour.
Every so often (no discernable pattern so far) my Finder pops up with a new window in /private/var/tmp.  There is a huge system stacktrace printed out in a file with the following format: "
    sysdiagnose_2013.10.30_19-53-16-MDT_9956.tar.gz
There are a ton of files in there, so I have no idea how to figure out what is crashing and causing it. I get no "system crash message" to go along with it.

  • Sandbox deny file-read-metadata /private/var/tmp

    Hi,
    I have Berkeley DB 5.2.28.
And I tried to use Berkeley DB on iOS 4.3.
    I wrote;
    printf (stderr, "db open - 1");
    ret = dbenv.open(strDBdir,
    DB_CREATE |
    DB_INIT_LOCK |
    DB_INIT_LOG |
    DB_INIT_MPOOL |
    DB_INIT_TXN |
    DB_THREAD |
    DB_RECOVER,
    S_IRUSR | S_IWUSR);
    printf (stderr, "db open - 2");
    I runned this app on iPod 4 (iOS 4.3), and then in xCode's Organizer found a message: "sandbox[363] <Notice>: myapp(362) deny file-read-metadata /private/var/tmp", between "db open - 1" and "db open - 2".
    How to resolve it?
    Please, help me.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
I assume you have correctly followed and built BDB 5.2.28 for Apple iOS by following the guide for Building Berkeley DB for UNIX/POSIX and the notes specific to Apple iOS (iPhone OS).
    The error message you reported:
sandbox[363] <Notice>: myapp(362) deny file-read-metadata /private/var/tmpis not an error from the BDB layer, but rather from the OS layer. It could point to insufficient privileges or rights (to write in that /private/var/tmp directory) or maybe a profile / access control list that is not configured correctly to allow the user you're running under to read metadata and data for a file; for example, make sure you have something like this in your sandbox profile:
    (allow file-write* file-read-data file-read-metadata
      (regex "^/path_to_BDB_environment__strDBdir")
      (regex "^(/private)?/var/tmp/")
(regex "^(/private)?/tmp/"))If this does not help then I suggest you post on the Apple discussion forums.
    Regards,
    Andrei

  • Just swept my disk.. what can i delete?? (PRIVATE VAR?)

my private-var-vm is 3.0gb full... what is it, can i delete it?

    what is it
    Virtual memory swapfiles.
    can i delete it?
No. Don't delete anything in /private/ except for the content of /private/tmp/ or /private/var/tmp/. If you want to delete files to make more space available, look at /Library/Printers/ and run Monolingual.

  • Star Up Disk "full" problems...Which private/var files can I delete?

I have been having issues with my start up disk being full.
To the point where I could not copy to my clipboard as I had ZERO space left, programmes were shutting down etc.
I couldn't even delete the few pics I had as I couldn't open my Kodak software.
I have uploaded the photos now and deleted them, I have copied all the files I can to sticks, there is basically nothing I have added on the computer, yet I still have only under 700 MB of space on my HD.
I have downloaded and run Omni Disk...it is telling me I have 130GB of "private/var" files.
I know I cannot just go around deleting things, so need to know what I can and cant delete if possible?
I really need to sort this problem out!
I also need to know how to fix this problem from happening again - is this a log problem or what exactly?
Thanks for your help in advance!

    Hi, Limeslice
just to make sure that there is not a dum mistake: did you empty the trash?.
    Other:
Disk space consumers are typically large photo libraries, music and video files.
back them up, then delete them, and don't forget to empty the trash.
    To find large directories :
open Terminal (under applications/utilities), then type "du -d 1 -h" (without quotation marks). this gives a list. for example, it says " 25G ./Pictures", it means that the Picture directory has 25 GB. you can then refine and ask for deeper levels, by typing "du -d 2 -h" or "du -d 3 -h".
Try to find out in this way. if this doesn't give you the correct hint, please, report back, there might be more complex problems.
    Success, Thomas

  • Private/tmp file filled with random folders

Several times in the past few months I have had the Private/tmp file filled with random folders taken off of my HD. I can easily find them with Whatsize but they are always in the Private/tmp file. This, of course brings my startup disc up with the usual warning "Startup disc is full.
I have looked on console and the only thing that looks suspicious is the following entry:
Sep 22 12:35:34 <user>-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[934]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 935 PPID 1 pickup
This entry occurs continuously throughout the log.
I use both Super duper and Time Machine to back up my systems HD and my Docs HD.
Any help on this. I have used Apples since 1982 and this is a first.
    Thanks

    Thanks Red Menace.
I am aware of the regular tmp files, but what I am talking about is over 500GB of random files from my hard disk put into the private/tmp folder. It is not the normal machine operation.
Further investigation indicates it might be Super Duper, but I can not find an exact duplicate of my problem

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected?

  • Fans running on full with almost no load

I've noticed in the last month or so that my (now out-of-warranty) MacBook's fans have been running at top speed a LOT. Previously only processor-intensive apps would cause my MacBook to howl, stuff like Visual Hub and Handbrake, or decompression apps, but now even simple stuff (say, playing iTunes and running Firefox with a few tabs open) seems to warrant the fans on full.
For reference, I use my MacBook (99.9% of the time) on an iCurve (which is supposed to help keep the system cool, isn't it?) with an external monitor. iTunes is usually open, as are Firefox and Transmission, and occasionally Unison. I did a full backup, reformatted the hard drive and a fresh install of the OS last week hopeful that this might help, but it didn't. If anything, the noise has gotten worse. I never had any problems like these with my old iBook G4, I've got to say.
Short of getting in there and cutting the fans' wires how can I control the noise? It's really aggravating. Am I looking at an impending hardware failure?

Open *Activity Monitor* and check *All Processes* in the CPU window and see if there is anything in the background causing this.

  • Private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss

The folder 'private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss' is referenced quite a bit on Google regarding a common privileges warning that occurs for many people. Yet nothing that touches on what the files in this folder do.
What is the function of this RSS folder in OSX?
    Thank you.

My final question has been asked dozens of times, yet I've yet to find an answer that satisfies my curiosity.
    The common permissions error:
    "Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x ."
occurs for many. The popular opinion is that this is harmless and should be ignored. Fine, yet I'm still wondering why and how it happens so much.
The change from drwxr-xr-x to drwxrwxr-x reflects a group write privilege that does not exist in it's default state.
Why and how does this happen?

    Scroto,
You may not actually have a bad processor. On the Dual G5's it's not uncommon after a few years for dust and corrosion to build up between the processors and their sockets. You can fairly easily remove the processors and clean the connections yourself if you're at all handy. Basically, snap off the heatsink covers, loosen a few screws and the processor and heatsink come out as a unit.
Clean the contacts on the processors (carefully). And clean the sockets. Be sure to put the same processor in the same place or you'll have issues.
I used 90% isopropol alcohol to clean mine last year. Let it air dry and blew both the socket and the cpu off after with canned air. That done, I reinstalled the processors, buckled everything up and no more "bad" processor... The machine worked perfectly from then on and I assume it still does today. Don't know, someone stole it last month:(...

    Hello all,
    I have the enxt problem:
    - I execute vi <file_name> and i receive the next error:
"/var/tmp/ExsXa4cE" No such file or directory
I changed the permissions to /var/tmp and /tmp
I recreate the ln of /usr/tmp
And I continue receiving the same error
    Some one can help me?
    Thanks in advanced

Hi, What is the permissions on /tmp. vi editor opens up file in a buffer which uses /tmp/.
check the persmissions on /tmp and also /tmp is a world-writeable, sticky bit directory.
