Private/vars/folder errors...

I am having issues now publishing my site using rapid weaver. I am getting an error message that it could not create folder/private/vars/folders.... This morning when I restarted my computer I got a similar error that Dropbox couldn't start, similar error, stating its a permissions error. Any help would be apprecitated.

I'd argue that it doesn't go far enough: generally, you don't want to have methods exposing the data either. Objects aren't supposed to exchange data, they're supposed to provide services for each other, operating on their own data.
Of course in the real world, you have to exchange data sometimes. But you should try to avoid it.
So I say, that order of decreasing preference:
- Favor local variables over fields. Limit their scope within the methods as much as possible.
- Keep all fields private.
- Do not write methods that expose fields.
- When you write methods that expose fields, favor package-private over protected, and favor protected over public.
- When you write methods that expose fields, write getters but not setters.
Those last two rules are a tie, IMO.
This is a rule of thumb that I believe to be helpful in writing maintainable and more bug-resistant code.

  • Private/var folder (5.66GB) on my desktop; can I delete it?

It got there as I was copying ApplicationSupport/CrashReporter, Logs/DiagnosticReports from the root Library, and Application Support/CrashReporter, Application Support/Rapport/User/Logs from the Home/User/(Me)  Library folder. The invisible private/var folder appeared as I was dragging copies of these to the desktop.
I emailed these to Trusteer for troubleshooting, because of Rapport conflict prblms with other Safari extentions (see other discussions on this).
The prblm is I now can't remember where this private/var folder came from, and I'm afraid I might have dragged the original rather than a copy, and I don't want to trash it until I'm sure.
My MacBk Pro has been booting up and acting normally since this folder is on the desktop, so I guess this is a good sign. My understanding is that a folder/file on the desktop is inactive anyway.
Can I trash it w/o consequences????

    Thnx baltwo, did that, got:
    Charless-MacBook-Pro:~ ChasM$ chflags hidden /private
    chflags: /private: Permission denied
    Charless-MacBook-Pro:~ ChasM$
This despite that I'm logged in as Administrator, and that I added "Administrator" and "Me" to Terminal Permissions Read/Write priveleges; "System" already had Read/Write.
By the way, I assume that when it works, this is supposed to make my invisible Private folder visible??
Also, I tried typing in these commands rather than pasting - same result

  • A private var folder is taking up all of my startup disk space and I can't delete it.

    HI,
My startup disk usage jumped to full quite unexpectedly. On running 'daisy disk' I can see that most of the space has been taken up with files marked as:
Disks and folders/macintosh hd/private/var/vm followed by a whole lot of 'swap file' extensions (34.3 GB in total)
    and
    folders/macintosh hd/private/var/db
What are these large files, and how do I delete them?  Daisy disk says that they are required by OsX- but they weren't there before-
    Alison

Shutdown the computer. Wait 30 seconds then restart. See if anything has changed. The swap files should be deleted. The main reason you may have such large swap is because you are running out of memory from trying to run to many applications concurrently.
Do not do anything with the /private/var/db file. The system needs that file.
There are many things that can take up space on a hard drive:
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • System won't boot after accidentally deleting /private/var/folder

My Macbook Air is running OS 10.9 Mavericks, and I accidentally deleted the /var folder after seeing it taking lots of GB's from my storage.
Safari, Mail and a lot of applications f'ed up itself, like safari saying it couldn't connect to the folder.
I tried to put those folders back, and it gave me an Unauthorized Caller alert. I tried doing it again, and the folders froze, but I can still move my mouse. I restarted my computer by holding power 7 seconds, and tried to restart.
Somehow, I saw the grey Apple logo startup screen, heard that startup chime, and 10 seconds later, it shut down. I tried doing it again many times, but to no avail.

So here's my problem. I'm using intel iMac and yesterday my Mac didn't boot( grey screen etc). I thought that it was because I used force shutdown. I used (option-cmd-r-p) to reset and after that, Mac booted up into some kind of "first time startup screen"... So I used installation DVD and restored my previous backup of the system by using the TM. After that the Mac booted and now all I get is folder with a question mark? Now what....?
your profile suggests that you are running Tiger. if that is so, you shouldn't even be able to use time machine (introduced with Leo).
    can you please clarify ...

  • Deleted private/var/db folder.... Can't boot

Hi, first I know that what I did was stupid but I didnt know what I was doing.. and I still don’t know what are the consequences.
In order to save space on my MBP 2011 Snow Leopard, I deleted private/var/db folder, yes the whole folder to the trashbin and then I emptied it. Files that were in use weren´t deleted.
So I rebooted and the screen is stuck on apple logo with the turning wheel and safe boot start normally but end up with the turning wheel too.
How can I put fix this issue?
Can I recover the files deleted ? Or at least put back the files that are still in the trash bin ?
    Thank you for any help.

If they borrow a disc it's possible to replace just the deleted directory using Pacifist:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1.          In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b.          or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3.          In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4.          On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5.          Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6.          Click “close”. Go to step 7.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks - System errors popping up in /private/var/tmp ... Help!!

    Hi there,
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, and installed my standard software, I'm getting some odd behaviour.
Every so often (no discernable pattern so far) my Finder pops up with a new window in /private/var/tmp.  There is a huge system stacktrace printed out in a file with the following format: "
    sysdiagnose_2013.10.30_19-53-16-MDT_9956.tar.gz
There are a ton of files in there, so I have no idea how to figure out what is crashing and causing it. I get no "system crash message" to go along with it.

  • Hard Drive filling up: SubmitDiagInfo, /private/var & log issues

This topic is part question, part help for people I've seen having a similar problem in other threads. My issue is different enough from the other issues, that I wanted to post it as a separate topic.
I've had about 24GB of available space for weeks now. I haven't downloaded any large files recently, nor created any myself.
Suddenly I noticed the hard drive space decreasing. I went from 24GB, to 19GB, to 10GB, then 8, 5, 1.5... next thing I knew, it said I had 260MB available. This was within maybe two days, with a big ramp-down within a couple of hours this morning, while I was on a train, and not even connected to a network.
I started getting error messages saying my hard drive was full; then, I got errors saying I didn't have enough application memory, and applications were being paused, and I would have to force quit them. Within about 5 minutes, I dropped from 1.5GB to 260MB.
Thinking back, the last week or so, I remembered that sometimes when I came into my office in the morning, my Mac would be awake (I usually sleep it at the end of the day, and an error message would be displayed saying SubmitDiagInfo had crashed. I thought this might have something to do with it.
I did some detective work in these forums. I checked Activity Monitor and the Console. Sure enough, SubmitDiagInfo was taking up a bunch of CPU time.
The Console revealed I had a lot of Diagnostic Logs. I tried deleting them with the Console's Clear button, but it didn't seem to do anything. I checked with OmniDiskSweep, and sure enough, I had over 20GB of log files.
At this point, my hard drive was so full, I had to force quit OmniDiskSweep. I used the Go To Folder command and entered /private/var/log - The Diagnostic Logs folder was nearly 20GB. I deleted it and emptied the trash immediately.
I looked at the /private/var/vm folder and noticed it was also very large (10GB), but I had read elsewhere not to mess with this folder.
From the console, I quit SubmitDiagInfo.
I check my hard drive, and I'm suddenly back to 24GB free space.
When I look again at /private/var/vm, and sure enough it is 5GB smaller.
This is weird stuff, and I hope this description helps anyone else having this problem.
What's interesting is, because the /private folder is invisible, you can't use it to calculate your disk space usage. For example, the folders on my drive had the following space usage:
    62.46GB34.53GB+22.96GB+4.78GB4.02GB = 128.75GB (plus a few "small" folders with maybe 300MB)
Since the drive showed 159GB total space available, I couldn't figure out where the other 30GB was.
Once I found /private/log, I could see it had 19.29GB:
62.4634.53+22.96+4.78+4.0219.29 = 148.04 - ah, this makes more sense, but I'm still missing 10GB! So, I look at /private/vm, and boom, there is the extra 10.6GB hiding. All 159GB present and accounted for.
The question I have is, of course, can anyone explain why this is happening, so I can prevent it from happening again?
I hope someone finds this helpful.

Thanks... that is helpful. I have Carbon Copy Cloner, not
Super Duper, so I will keep that solution in mind.
Do not, repeat do not, clone your current suspect hard drive
to your CCC backup. That would defeat the purpose of having
a good backup. I don't know if you can boot from you CCC
backup. That would be a good test. I was able to boot from
my SuperDuper backup and notice normal hard drive space.
In the meantime, I ran the extended system test, and the
    computer passed.
Mine with the growing hard drive passed every test I had plus
the test Apple recommended. They were quick place the blame
on a Virtual Windows XP Pro. I do not thing that was the
problem. My normal Macintosh HD is usually about 52 GB
and it was showing 110 GB used and I never could figure out
what was hogging the hard drive.
    Good luck!

  • /private/var/tmp has gone missing!  ***?!?!?!?

Please, I need help on this one. I had an iBook G4 crash on me, then get as far as the white Apple screen with pinwheel before freezing. I tried running Disk Utility off of an OS X install disk, and it found no volume structure errors. However, when I tried repairing permissions on it, Disk Utility was reporting that the directory /private/var/tmp has gone missing, and it could not repair permissions.
What gives? How can the whole directory get fried? How can I replace it? I've already tried doing an archive and install, but the OS X installed won't let me do an archive and install, probably because this folder is missing.
    Can anyone help?

Get Prosoft Data Rescue to recover the data to an external hard disk. Shut down the computer, disconnect the drive any other third party peripherals and then next after that do an erase and install of the operating system. You will probably want to use a CD burner to burn off less frequently used data on occasion at least a couple times so that your hard drive does not fill up with unessential stuff. Some more tips on backing up are on this page:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html

  • Private/var/log/asl files are huge: weird iTunes stuff

    Hi all,
I am running ancient OS 10.5.8 on my ancient MacBook.   I noticed some rather large log files in private/var/log/asl eating up HDD space, and wanted to delete them, but I scanned through them first to see if I could get an idea of what was going on.

This happened over and over again.  Anyone have any idea what is going on here?  iTunes is 10.6 if that matters.

I think the following will do the trick for you (from http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329979-263.html?tag=mfiredir):
Fix: Restart log managers after removing asl data
Open the Terminal application and enter the following two commands to stop the log managers:
    sudo launchctl stop com.apple.syslogd
    sudo launchctl stop com.apple.aslmanager
Then create a folder on your desktop called "temp" (to store the moved "data store" files), and enter the following command in the Terminal to move the "ASL" data to the new temporary folder:
    sudo mv /var/log/asl/* ~/Desktop/temp/
Finally, restart the "syslogd" process with the following command (the aslmanager will be started when needed by syslogd, so it doesnt need to be manually restarted):
    sudo launchctl start com.apple.syslogd

  • Can publish to a folder; error messages to mobile me?  why?

I've had lots of problems documented all over these boards this weekend.
Where I'm at now is that I have imovie 09 and I've published my entire set to a folder. When I view the site from that folder it works just fine.
When I go to publish this site (that worked just fine in 08) it takes a long time to create all the pages (my domain site was just over 3g) and then goes to publish and I eventually get an error message. I've tried removing the pages that are referenced then it moves on to another page the next time I try it. I've pasted a sample below.
Any ideas here? If it works from the folder, and I've never had any issues with mobile me and uploading in the past, what do I do from here?
An error occurred while publishing file “/private/var/folders/uD/uDnOLB5IEkGuvPfGSseTk++TI/TemporaryItems/com.apple.iWeb129_TEMP_255219680_5/sites/Site/Photo_Albums/Pages/Isaac_Plays_Guitarfiles/Media/AZ150001/web.jpg”. Try publishing again later.

It looks like they are having problems with the Apple servers. Today when updating my blog, I got a message asking me if I wanted a MobileMe account. After some fiddling I got it to publish. It looks like this is a server thing. Just wait a bit and try again later. Don't change anything on your computer. We always suppose it is our own computer that is at fault, but quite often the Apple servers can't handle it.

  • Private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss

The folder 'private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss' is referenced quite a bit on Google regarding a common privileges warning that occurs for many people. Yet nothing that touches on what the files in this folder do.
What is the function of this RSS folder in OSX?
    Thank you.

My final question has been asked dozens of times, yet I've yet to find an answer that satisfies my curiosity.
    The common permissions error:
    "Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x ."
occurs for many. The popular opinion is that this is harmless and should be ignored. Fine, yet I'm still wondering why and how it happens so much.
The change from drwxr-xr-x to drwxrwxr-x reflects a group write privilege that does not exist in it's default state.
Why and how does this happen?

  • Accidentally deleted /var folder, now recovery utilities not responding to trackpad/keyboard!

So I did something completed stupid, and now have a big problem.
I accidentally deleted /var folder and emptied the trash!!
Now my MBP is stuck at the grey start up screen with the apple & spinng wheel and won't start up..
The weird thing is, now when I enter recovery utilities, everything displays fine except I cannot click anything! The mouse pointer moves but won't respond to clicks! Same with the return on keyboard. Arrow keys work to move among 4 options on os x utilities (time machine/ reinstall/ online help/ disk utility) but when I hit enter, no response! The trackpad & return key works fine up until the point where the mbp asks which language to run the recovery utilities.
All my data is backed up online, and now I just want to reinstall os x and start using my mbp again!
I tried reinstall with an installation disc by holding down 'c' on start, then I hear the installation dvd spinning for 3 seconds, then it would start ticking and won't do anything else for a few minutes until I force shutdown.
Please!!! Can anyone help me?? How can I reinstall os x??  I would really appreciate!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you in advance.
    -Michelle

I know it's late but maybe it will help other people.
I ran into the same issue and none of the solutions listed by apple helped.
I booted into single-user mode and I read the log in /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/private/var/log/system.log, it was full of errors like theses
    Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air locationd[352]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 454: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000sm00006d/C/ modes[2]=0700: No such file or directory
Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air.local locationd[352]: could not create persistent store directory (Input/output error)
    Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air locationd[352]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 454: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000sm00006d/C/ modes[2]=0700: No such file or directory
The system actually tried to create directories in /var/folders but the directory /var/folders did not exists, so I created it:
    Under single-user mode:
    mount -o update /
    cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/
    mkdir var/folders
    mkdir var/folders/zz
    reboot
And it booted just fine !

  • Missing Hard Drive Space/private root folder

    Hello Everyone!
I've been having a problem with my iMac. Something seems to be eating up my hard drive space. I downloaded Disk Inventory X, and discovered I have a 200GB private folder under the root user!?! I've read on the forum that I shouldn't delete this, but I obviously need to clean this out. Is that advisable, and if so how do I do that? Also, is there any reason why it's so large? I've also read on these forums it should only be around 5GB. I'm sure this folder is getting larger by the minute (2 hours ago I had 8GB, now I have 6GB) and I'm getting the notification every few days that I'm running out of hard drive space. Thanks in advance!

If the /private/var/log/ folder is taking up the space, put that path into the Finder's Go to Folder command in the Go menu and delete the logs, or open one and look for one or more lines repeated over and over.

  • How can I fix this permissions "Library/Printers-should be 80 group is 0. Permissions differ. And User differs on "private/var/db/displaypolicyd" should be 0; Group is 244?

How can I fix this on my 2014 iMac, please?
Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.
I run the "fix" and it seemingly does, but if I verify permissions again later it returns.
    Thank you!

It's not an error but an informative message that you can safely ignore. it's innocuous.
