Pro Mac Pro Tip for Lion Users

Been frustrated with your Mac Pro since upgrading to Lion?  Maybe I can help.
I’ve spent the last few months just hating OS X Lion. I thought Apple should have given it a better nickname, like “System Hang” or “Patience is a Virtue.” I spent more time starring at the dreaded spinning beach ball of death than I did getting work done. Where I once kept open as many browser windows and tabs as I liked, I began closing everything I didn’t absolutely need right then. Aperture 3, which I adore, had become impossible to use.
Things had gotten so frustrating, I was seriously thinking about doing a clean system install — something I used to have to do every 6-12 months with Windows, and was one of the reasons I made the switch.
But there were other things I could do to speed things up, and here they are in no particular order:
• Replace system HDD with a super fast SSD. But that’s expensive, and a hassle. First you have to clone your existing system on it, and all four of my drive bays are full. So I’d have to put the SSD in a FireWire-freindly enclosure, clone it the slow way, then swap it in for the HDD.
• Put in a faster video card. This seemed the least-likely to do any good, and I’m not exactly taxing the card this machine shipped with more than two years ago.
• New CPU. I could install a non-sanctioned EFI update, and swap out my quad-core Xeon for something sexier. But not only is that expensive, it also voids my warranty.
• More memory! This is usually the go-to upgrade. It’s easy. It isn’t very expensive. And even if it doesn’t do a whole lot, you know you want it anyway.
Now, this Xeon processor has three memory channels, but the motherboard has four memory slots. If you fill all four, your memory takes a speed hit — but you can fit in more memory. If you use just three matched memory sticks, the processor can take full advantage of its memory architecture.
When I bought this box, I also picked up four 2GB memory sticks. I figured I could try it both ways: 3 sticks for 6GB of faster access or all 4 for 8GB of restricted access. Under previous versions of OS X — Leopard and Snow Leopard — things ran faster and smoother with the full 8GB.
Well let me tell you: Lion does not like slow memory. Not one bit.
Yesterday I ditched all four 2GB sticks and replaced them with three 4GB sticks. The 50% increase in memory space is a nice bit of room for Lion to run around in, but I’m wagering that leaving that fourth slot unfilled was what really did the trick. Because let me tell you, right now this Lion roars. All the bad things I said about Lion? I take them all back. And if you’re a frustrated Mac Pro/Lion user, heed my advice.
At this very moment, I’m looking at email, 40 or 50 browser tabs in six windows, my calendar and iTunes blown up to full screen, ripping a Blu-Ray and crunching it down to 720p at 30fps, sorting through more than 2,000 RAW images in Aperture, doodling around with three different Pages documents, and two Christmas shopping spreadsheets — all strewn across nine virtual desktops, while in the background iTunes is serving up two video streams to Apple TVs upstairs and Time Machine is cranking away to keep my data safe.
My Mac is a Mac again.

Hi ...
Avoid MacKeeper. Results of an ASC forum search for MacKeeper >  Community Search: Apple Support  Comments are discouraging for the most part. You don't need third party utlities installed to take care of your Mac. For the most part they do more harm than good.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Disabling the Lion "resume" feature may help.
Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
You can use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk and reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • Latest update 3.3 only for lion users? total mess

apple did a major step to indicate that aperture is no app for "pro"users. If it should be that it should support not only the latest system version!
latest update 3.3 only for lion users? total mess.
I will look for another solution. Sad.

    Hi,
I was wondering if somebody could give me some guidance please?
I bought an N73 in September after much research and a lot of deliberating, I decided to purchase one (via O2 in England) even though i had heard lots of unhappy people claiming the phone had ruined their life etc due to its software faults.
I haven't updated my phone yet since buying it mainly due to being put off by the number of NEW problems the updates can cause.
I dont have any major problems with my phone, its got a bit slower with time and the camera isnt very quick when uploading and sometimes switches off (but i think its to do with the slide mechanism on the back), anyway i would be grateful if you would give me your honest opinion as to whether i should upgrade to the latest firmware or not!
    Many Thanks

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • IMessage don't send sms anymore in MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and iPad.

My MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and iPad don't send sms anymore. They say that the address isn't registered in iMessage. It has worked fine until a couple of days ago.

    Hi,
Messages and particularly the iMessages account now has a range of "Known Issues"
First there were these four FaceTime, Game Center, Messages: Troubleshooting sign in issues - Apple Support
Then there was this 5th one
This is obviously before the Account seems to be logged in and can only be Fixed by contact Support (you may have to bump to Level 2  people)
Then there is the issue you have. (I call it Issue 6).
The App and the Account seem to be logged in.  (you can only tell if you are not if it fails)
In this case it works on iOS devices, sometimes other Macs if you have them but not on this computer.
It is related to the Apple ID and the Mac (even if you create another Mac User and set up Messages there the issue continues).
Deleting the Keychain Item (IDS: AppleID-Auth Token) seems not to help. It is not recreated until you can log in fully/properly.
On the basis that Issue 5 exists and proves you can have an issue with the ID at the Server and it will only effect one Mac then the presumption can be that this issue is very similar.
    That means contacting Apple Support.
Level One responders are Script led and will try to fit you into either Software or Hardware issues.
If you cannot convince them it is an Account Issue (free to fix) then ask to speak to a Level 2 person.
You may still have issue convincing them as well but they do tend to be more flexible and it really does not take them long to look and check.

  • Adobe Reader Pro 9 requires password for every user after seciurity updates?

Everytime I installe any Adobe Reader Pro seciurity updates like 9.4.3 and 9.4.4 on our Macs 10.6.6 and 10.6.7,
I had to input admin password for every user as reader is stoppng on install updates screen,
We have some hotmacs that are shared so it's a bit of a pain. Users don't have admin acess
to be able to install software on them.
    How do I resolve this?
Here's what I tried. None of these things resolved the problem for me.
    Repair disk permissions.
    Restart the Mac.
    Repair Adobe installation

Hi Sorry, the product in qusitons is Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.4.4 and 9.3.4 updates.
If you launch Acrobat Pro as the admin user, then authorise when requested, does that fix the problem for all users?
Or does this happen every time, for each user?
It does prompt for password for every user, thefore my flustration we have multiple editors using a Hotmac.
And we have to enter the password at least one time for every user after stupid seciurity update.
Presumably, Acrobat is trying to write to a location that Standard users don't have permission for.
Standard users don't have admin access to Mac but still I find adobe behevior very annoying.
I think this is normal enterpirse practise.
What happens if you allow write access to the Acrobat application folder and subcontents? Make sure you know what you're doing and how to restore it.
Would try this but still I would expect adobe to fix it updates.
    Thanks,

  • Mac Book Pro/Mac Pro fire wire saga

    Hi,
My husband and I are long time Mac users. Recently we decided to take the plunge and update to the new Mac Pro w/intell chip and the Mac Book Pro. The Big machine is now on it's way back to China due to numerous issues that all the techs in the kingdom could not solve, one issue being the non reponsive fire wire port. The Mac book Pro works Fine exept for IT"S fire wire port. No, It's not dirty. My device works in our older Macs. After 158 minutes on the phone with a tech (We tried everything) He put us on hold to get a case number. Another 40 minutes went by and he never got back on. Now we must repeat this agony one more day!!! Has anyone else had these problems? Were these new machines released to soon? Does anyone check them before they are sent out?

    Today is Aug. 24th.
my husband and I spoke to Apple this morning after last nights marathon phone call. The nice tech sent us to an Apple store to have them run a test on the fire wire port on the MBP . It is broken. He gave us a case number. Now the second machine is on it's way back to China........ I pray the next macines we get work! Believe me this time we will be sure to "Kick the tires" before we install more pricy software.
JUst a word to aanyony lokking to buy one, service is great, but, the loss of time in a small business is killer.

  • MacBook Pro & Mac Pro Both Upgraded to Leopard, All is OK So Far

I thought I would chime in with my experience in upgrading my MacBook Pro last night & My Mac Pro this morning. I made sure that I had 3 valid back ups of my Mac Pro data beforehand with my last back up yesterday morning. I also made sure that all my software was updated & checked for Apple updates as well. When I updated my MacBook Pro, I let the system validate the DVD and did an upgrade (not clean install or archive & install. The entire process (install DVD check & upgrade) took about 2 hours. I got the blue screen when it rebooted after teh install. Thanks to the posts I had seen on this board, I knew that I might get teh Apple BSOD for awhile . About 10 minutes later, my screen came up & I was able to access my wireless network no sweat. All my apps worked fine. This morning I upgraded my Mac Pro. Since I knew that the install DVD was good, I skipped the install DVD check. Initially it came back & said that the install would take about 1 hour and 29 minutes, but it only took about 45 minutes. This time I only got the blue screen for about 2 minutes, then my screen came up. I also installed the optional apps and the HP printer drivers on the install DVD for both my systems. The only issue I had was with my external Bose desktop speakers for my Mac Pro--they would not work, only the internal speaker was working. I rebooted, shut down & waited then brought my Mac Pro up, unplugged & replugged in the speakers but all for naught. I finally called Applecare and then after about 10 minutes on hold, the external speakers began working. I rebooted a couple of times, and it seems as though it took Leopard awhile to figure out that the speakers were there. My external Western Digital My Book USB external hard drive hung off my Mac Pro was recognized w/o a problem, and my first Time Machine back up is chugging away right now. I made sure to exclude my external hard drive from being backed up. I have successfully synched my iPhone and iPod Classic and printed to my HP 2600n printer. I feel that my apps launch and shut down more quickly under Leopard, and I really like the interface, the preview icons, and especially the dock (but then I am a sucker for eye candy). I have not yet tested Spaces. So far I am very happy with Leopard. As always, YMMV (your milage may vary). Good luck, Amy (sorry for he one long run on paragraph, but the last few times I posted in paragraphs, part of my post did not get posted.)

My only beef is with Migration Assistant. It gets to the last "minute" and just sits there.
Anyway, I'm loving 10.5 to the max !!

  • Is mountain lion free for lion users

is mountain lion free for lion users

Keep in mind, as soon as that's offered, if it is offered, that's the time buy from a store a Lion installed Mac.  That way, in event you have Lion compatible software which hasn't been tested with Mountain Lion, at least you'll have the option to stick with Lion until Mountain Lion is ready for you.  So keep your eye on http://www.apple.com/pr and http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ once summer begins.  Apple has offered up to date programs for a long time, typically up to three weeks prior to the release date, and given you a chance to know when the release date is.  If you order online though, and they are out of stock, you may be stuck with a Mountain Lion only compatible machine.  An authorized Apple retailer should be able to carry at least some models through http://www.apple.com/buy/ so check their stock at that time for what you desire.

  • Any word yet if Apple will be making a Mac Box Set for Lion?

It seems like they would since they no longer stock the Mac Box Set for Snow Leopard. I need the box set in order to reset my iMac to factory settings and no longer have the original discs. I tried getting replacements through Apple and they said I would have to purchase all the software separatly. I wish Apple would come out with the Lion box set already. I'm trying to avoid purchasing the Snow Leopard, iLife and etc, etc and then a week later a Lion Box Set comes out. I wonder if Lion discs will come out once they reveal the iPhone 5? Thanks!

The short of it is that, until Apple officially announces something, we don't know.
Keep in mind, though- Apple is moving away from physical media, especially disc-based.  Lion is only available by download or USB drive.
We don't know if Apple will ever release a Lion "Box set" with iLife, or by what media/method.  We just don't know.
