Pro Photographers Speak Up

I'm developing a new set of templates geared toward professional photographers. Right now I have six sets of page templates (yes, 6 x 7 pages = 42 different page types) that cover two different, but similar styles.
What I want to know from the professionals (who are trying to use iWeb in part for their sites) is, what kinds of pages do you want or need for your business or galleries?
I have many of the obvious pages you'd want, including all the standard iWeb page types, but not being a pro myself, I'm not entirely familiar with the kinds of pages you want and need. iWeb is still very limited in terms of what the pages CAN do, but I can certainly build foundations for things like SimpleViewer, WordPress and other widget integratons.
If you're a professional - meaning you make money by being a photographer, please let me know if you're trying to use iWeb and what kinds of page types you'd want to see.
You can email me off-line if you'd prefer: support att 11mystics dt com

Suzanne,
I am not a pro per se although I do sell some of my work. I just created an iWeb site because it was a lot easier to do what I wanted in terms of display than any other solution (without a big expense and learning curve). See address below.
The pros I know of who put up web site are of three types (I know there are lots of different aspects of photography, but for web sites I think these are the three most common) - event photographers, commercial photographers and fine art photographers. All three, it seems to me, have different needs (I am sure that I will be corrected by someone).
Event photographers can now use the web to show, often by password, the entire available image collection for an event and then take orders for individual prints or for an album. There are already a number of services that do this that these folks subscribe to.
Commercial photographers need to demonstrate their talents. iWeb currently comes closest, I think, to meeting their needs, but the standard slideshow is not sufficient. And, in my opinion, the need for differentiation is hard to achieve in iWeb. That is where your talents may come to the fore.
Fine Art photographers need a way to display their talents, too, but they must be able to create a sale online. The number of sizes, matte combinations and framing choices can be a challenge in that area.
Then, of course, there are the passionate "advanced" amateurs like me who are looking for really good templates to show our portfolios.
Hope these brief descriptions are helpful.

I wonder how pro photographers use aperture?I shoot raw and my harddrive is alreay full.I'm not able to import new pictures. I don't know what to do. I created a vault. My plan was to create a vault(put all my master files into an external harddrive) and then delete all my projects in my mac pro's harddrive. Is it the correct way to do it ? What should I do if I have thousands of raw files ? How should my workflow be? Can I use an external HD and use aperture through the vault, without keeping the master files on my computer's hard drive?? Or should I shoot raw+jpeg and store raw files in an external backup harddrive and import only jpegs into my aperture library?

There's a bit to learn.  It will slowly make sense.
Aperture is an empty field.  You're given a tractor and a whole bunch of attachments. What you grow, how, and where, is entirely up to you.
Vaults are for back-up and only for back-up.  They have nothing to do with storing your working files.
When your Library outgrows your system drive (and for good performance, you should leave c. 20% of every drive empty), it's time to convert some of your image's Masters from Managed to Referenced.  ("Managed" and "Referenced" refer to Masters, not to Libraries.)
There are hundreds of posts in the forum, and several pages in the User Manual on using Masters.
Many people run Aperture with the Library on their system disk, and most (or all) of their images' Masters on external FW drives.  This is a good set-up.  Note that you will likely have to take steps to back-up the data on your external drives.
If you do the above, there should be no reason to delete any Projects.
The choice of RAW or RAW+JPEG or JPEG depends on the kind of work you are doing.  I capture RAW only -- but I don't do any commercial shoots.  Pros on deadlines report that the RAW+JPEG works well for them.  Capture JPEG if it saves you time.  IMHO, there is not a good reason to shoot JPEG to save space (space is cheap; time expensive).
Short-term solution: buy and use a FW800 external 1 TB drive, formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and using Aperture relocate the Masters of all images older than 30 days to that drive.  (Be sure to change your back-up strategy to include this new drive; you may need a second new drive.)
This general post of mine might help you understand more about Aperture.

  • Macbook Pro (2011) speaker balance keeps resetting to the left

I recently notice that whenever I reboot/startup my macbook pro, the speaker balance keeps defaulting halfway to the left. I never notice it much except when I'm listening to songs that have some part only playing in one side. I just find it odd that during startup it defaults to be halfway to the left, and I'm wondering if there's a setting somewhere that I missed that can make it the default preference.

Are you using an external display?
Along with others, I have the same issue on a MBP 2011 when using the 27" Cinema Display:

  • New mid 09 macbook pro weak speaker problem

    I just got a mid 09 macbook pro 15''.
and notice the full volume on the speaker is just about 60-70%
of the late 08 macbook pro when turn to full 100%.
    anyone notice this?
not sure is this a defect or apple did something to the mid 09 model
maybe add an internal speaker limiter/compressor?

How would this affect the warranty? Obviously I'm not trying to insert a hardware compressor/limiter, just route the signal on the audio output bus through a plugin (or some piece of software) before it gets to the internal speakers, or any other output device for that matter. Would this really affect the warranty?

  • Logic Pro X speaker emulation / vintage sound?

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use iZotope's "Vinyl" plug-in with the new Logic Pro X.  If this is not able to be used, is there another free plug that does a similar lo-fi/speaker emulation that anyone may know of?  Thank you in advance!

Yep, Ed's right, you can use those (impulse Responses) via Space Designer...

  • MacBook Pro Right Speaker Stopped Working

    Hi,
I've had a 15.4" 2.4 Ghz MacBook Pro for about three weeks now, and I've been loving it. Everything's great, especially after switching from a 3.5 year old dell. About 3 days ago though, I was listening to music, and paused it when I went to grab a snack. I came back about 10 min. later and found that my right speaker was not working. No sound whatsoever. My left speaker is perfectly fine, no problems with that. I tested everything. I played with speaker balance, I changed and unchanged audio midi setup preferences, restarted, everything. Once when I restarted the speakers were fine, even the right one. But when I started playing music, I heard the right speaker die. I don't know what's wrong.
I plan on taking it to the Apple Store, but I just want to know whether something like this has happened to anyone else, and whether there's some sort of solution to this.
I have the AppleCare Protection plan, and am still under the 90 day warranty, so I think I should be fine. Thanks!

An intermittent problem like this sounds like a hardware failure to me. Could be a loose wire inside or a poor solder joint. Either way, taking it in to Apple is the right call.

  • Satellite Pro T110 - speaker volume problem

How do I increase the volume of the speakers in my T110?
Ive read other forums that suggest thats just the way it is but that cant be right - its impossible to hear on max.
My partner has a Toshiba NB300 (much smaller) but the speaker volume is much better.
Is it a common problem with T110 buyers?
    Is there a fix PLEASE?

    Hi buddy,
I never saw any other forums where people talk about low volume on Satellite T110 I also have this model and the sound volume is ok for this small and ultra portable notebook.
I think you want to increase the volume when watching movies or listen music, right?
Well, in this case I would recommend using VLC media player. In my opinion its the best freeware player and using it you can improve volume compared to Windows media player.
Have a look on Google to find it. Its freeware tool so I dont think its a problem to find. ;)

  • Macbook pro 13 Speaker problem

When I listen to music in Mono, it’s supposed to be that the speakers sound exactly the same from both channels. But when I move the balance of the speakers in System Preferences, the left speaker sounds very distorted and muffled and in the right speaker sounds good with a lot of bass. The guitars sound awful in the left channel . there is a problem with my Macbook? or is supposed to sound like that? i just bought it. its a 2012  model without retina display.
    Thank you!

Both speakers should work equally well.  I would exchange it for another one if you just bought it.

  • MacBook Pro External Speaker Hum With External Display

When I plug my MacBook Pro into a set of external speakers, I get a loud-to-deafening hum depending on the volume that the speakers are set to. However, this only happens if I have an external monitor plugged in. I unplugged the macbook, and this did not stop the hum, and I turned off the extra display and this did not stop the hum, neither did actually unplugging it from its power source, the only thing that stops it is taking the vga cord out of the displayport to vga adapter.
Any ideas as to why this hum happens? It's not always just a static hum either, occasionally there are crackles, like from a record or something.

thinking that you are using a stereo cable 1/8" to 1/8" there can be a few explanations to that .. one the cable could damaged internally mixing audio signals .. or it can be that the wiring diagram is a bit off ( the jack has 3 connectors on it ) ..or the input you use on your speakers were not meant for a stereo cable .. the jack input you use on your speakers could be damaged ..or that hole you plug them in was not an input at all
Now that you are over the problem .. These don't really matter much ..
    Take care

  • Pro Photographers-recommendation

I have a question for the photography pros out there. Which macbook do you use, or recommend? I have a one year old 20" iMac, with Aperture, but it seems having a macbook would be really an asset for a photography business.
    Thanks!

For a photo pro I would recommend getting a 2.4GHz model with 4GB RAM and the largest and fastest hard drive you can get your sticky fingers on.
As for the choice between a 17" and 15", that will come down to personal preference as weight and size are possible issues for you, however the high-res 17" could make for an excellent 20" iMac replacement although I'd try to have a look at one first to see if you're ok with the resolution.

also sometimes my phone's screen will go mental

  • Lightroom not a one-stop shop for Pro Photographers

The claim to fame purports to make this a one-stop processing shop for Photographers.
Most photographers prefer to send their post-processed files to the lab. And if they really know their stuff, they are probably profiling their images to the lab printers. This is where LR fails miserably.
To make my point, I will start off by explaining how RawShooter worked (RawShooter was purchased by Adobe and after major surgical procedure sold as Lightroom):
    For Rawshooter:
    1. Open the RAW file.
    2. Choose the profile of the printer I wish to use for the final output. This results in a significant color shift to the image as seen on the screen. After all, the benefit of the profile is to ensure that What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG).
    3. Make changes to the image so that the final output is to your liking. (remember, the RAW files themselves are never modified. All you do is create offset points and save that data seperately)
    4. Export to JPG
    5. Send image to the lab with an assurance that WYSIWYG.
    With Lightroom:
    1. Open the RAW file
    2. No ability to choose a printer profile.
    3. Make changes to the image with no idea how the final output is going to look. (remember, the RAW files themselves are never modified. All you do is create offset points and save that data seperately)
    4. Export to JPG
    5. Send image to lab with the hope you like what you get (HYLWYG)
So, LR cannot be a one-stop shop for processing and printing RAW files. Any one who understands the importance of printer profiles would demand a WYSIWYG image to which one can apply the changes.
Rawshooter was much better at this.

My chip was largely from the way the Pixmantec acquisition was handled. I think everyone felt that was a real issue. George and Tom (and probably others) started the turnaround with the announcement of the freebie for RSP users.
The other issue was that there really wasn't much for Windows users at the time (which was every RSP user). B3 came out and was pretty, umm..., in need of help. Then B4 came out and we started to see how fast the team was working. B4 was impressive from that standpoint, but a disaster in another way - it would only run for 5-10 minutes at a time before crashing for me. That was frustrating because I could see the improvements, but not use the tool. But the fact that we had started to see movement in a positive direction (instability not withstanding) started to turn attitudes around, at least for me.
Since I've been a tester I've seen more first hand how dedicated and hard working the team actually is. 1.0 was far from perfect, either from a QE standpoint or from a feature standpoint. But it's more movement. When you see two positive changes in a short time, you start to see a pattern.
I still see both detail and fundamental problems with LR. But now I'm just trying like crazy to help the team move forward, one little bit at a time, in what little way I can. Given the team's dedication, I have no doubt that we'll get "there" (wherever that is) as long as they get continued support from Adobe management.
I still think you jump on people too quickly, Jeff. I think you should give people one strike (like you did with me) instead of calling them out after the first one. Answer an overly-aggressive post with kindness. If you get more flames back, then that's different. But sometimes you get useful information instead. You never get that when you respond with flames! You're too darned useful for us little guys not to be getting the full benefit of your experience.

  • New MacBook Pro 15" Speaker Output Not as Good As My Silver Keyboard 15"

Just curious, why is the sound output worse quality and the total volume output significantly less than my three year old silver keyboard 15" MacBook Pro (mag adapter version)? The sound output is "tinny" sounding and ramped all the way up is not much sound output on computer speakers.

Probably because Apple recognizes that few users really want to listen to the built-in speakers at high volume, if at all. They sound terrible at all settings, but much worse when they're turned all the way up and distorting badly. If they got louder than they do, they'd sound worse still.
It's not possible to make tiny little speakers handle much power or deliver good full-spectrum sound, and the smaller and thinner MBPs get, the less room there is for speakers in them. Use headphones or good external speakers if you want enjoyable listening.
