Pro Rez v HDV ....Am I missing something.......
I am trying to find the best workflow for editing HDV filmed from my Sony HC7....
i have captured using HDV codec (firewire) and Apple Pro rez (Hq) via Blackmagic....
The Apple pro Rez is 10x the file size and doesnt seem to be any better quality....
I am monitoring via a SD Sony monitor (via the Blackmagic intensity pro)....
When will I see the benifits of Apple pro rez???
I have my 1st big job editing a commercial release for my band ,that was shot on Sony HDV..
i am looking for the best quality result DVD...any thoughts..

The obvious is render times. ProRes will render faster and it doesn't have to "conform". You can just capture native HDV and select it's sequence settings to RENDER to ProRes which will result in no quality loos and will render 40% faster just by doing so. The render files will be large.
The plus is an all "i" frame format instead of a CPU hogging format like HDV. It's lossless, and will also convert to MPEG faster because it's an all i frame format. You'd have to render everything to get to this nirvana... If you start with ProRes, you don't have to render it all to be ProRes because it already is.

I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there. Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing something?

That means you imported one Library to another.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
So the reason you're seeing small photos is because you're seeing the iPhoto thumbnails from the back up library.
So, what to do?
Do you still have the back up? If so, trash this bunged up library and restore from the back up again. HOw to restore will depend entirely on how you made the back up, but no version of restoring includes importing the library.

I have just tried to connect my Mac book pro to an LG Plasma TV via an iWires Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. All I get on my TV is the Mac wallpaper and nothing else. I am missing something really silly, could anyone help please.
Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire. -
I just got a MBP Retina. At it's highest resolution, everything is tiny. The only way to get things to a readable size is to lower the rez, but that defeats the purpose of having it. Am I missing something?
It doesn't defeat the purpose to lower the resolution. When you choose the size you can read, the extra pixels are used to make the text and graphics more detailed, closer to the high print resolution humans have been accustomed to reading on paper for hundreds of years. That is the difference compared to the coarse screen resolution of a conventional (non-Retina) screen.

My MacBook Pro has an SDXC card slot. I insert a SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo into slot but nothing happens and I can't find anything through finder or in utilities. Am I missing something or is it a faulty reader?
The SD card slot ois for SD cards not Memory Sticks. hat is why nothing is happening. you will need a Memory stick reader that connects to one of the USB ports.

Exporting HDV to Std Def - h.264 or Pro rez?
Can do the 'share' option but the idvd menus are far superior. So exporting thru QT (not QT conversion), which would yield the better results h.264 or Pro rez 422? And will set the idvd prefs to Best Performance.
Export to QuickTime using Current Settings (same as your Timeline) and Self Contained.
iDVD will recompress to MPEG 2 -the basis of a DVD Video disc.
Exporting to H.264 means that your video will be compressed twice. This is bad.

FRUSTRATED:Simple Tasks - Am I missing something or does iTunes fall short?
So last night I became VERY frustrated because I attempted the SIMPLE TASK OF COPYING MP3 files to a flash card and ran into SEVERAL snags...
I wanted to copy just my MP3 files (not AAC) and ran into the following snags:
1) I COULD NOT FIND ANY WAY to burn songs or play list to ANYTHING other than CDs and I had way more data to transfer than would fit on a CD. Isn't there ANY WAY to copy songs to a flash drive?
2) I couldn't find a way to select Full Album from the album list. I just wanted to view "Album View" as to choose from artists and pick an ENTIRE album skip a few pick a few more ENTIRE ALBUMS, skip a few, etc. I could not find a way to select an ENTIRE album from the Album List without selecting EACH song INDIVIDUALLY. It IS the ALBUM LIST chy can't you select an entire ALBUM? Am I missing something?
3) Then when I tediously selected about 40 albums (song by tedious song) it wouldn't copy them over. Apparently it was too much data to handle. So I had to reselect albums in groups of 10 (song by tedious song). Is it true iTunes can't handle more than a few MB of data at a time?
4) After this tedious FLASH card backup I synced my iPod and low and behold I couldn't sort by GROUP which is how I classified all my music since A) every time I set a custom GENRE and tags, it would default back to the often WRONG GENREs that Apple had assigned after "GETTING TRACK INFO or ALBUM ARTWORK." Isn't there any way to sort by GROUPS on the iPod? Is there any way to assign CUSTOM GENRES and not have them go back to the default and often wrong default settings that iTunes assigned?
i think those were ALL SIMPLE TASKS that iTunes SHOULD have been able to accomplish quite easily. But apparently not! If I am missing something, please enlighten me.
Bonus questions...
Why does iTunes break up some albums into a few songs at a time and not others? I can't get them back together unless I select COMPILATION, which it might not necessarily qualify as?
Half of my CDs I copied over to iTunes sound great on the computer but tinny and play through the right speaker only. What settings should I use, because the default ones don't sound good.
Why does iTunes keep CONSTANTLY interrupting/stalling my computing when it is just copying CDs. I thought the whole point of selecting COPY CD and EJECT in the preferences was to eliminate this. [I'm running on a brand new MacBook Pro with MAXIMUM memory available]
The icing on the cake is that I couldn't finay ANY MANUALS for iTunes on the APPLE.COM site and only incredibly rudimentary video tutorials that cover little. I also have the official Apple book on iTunes whih doesn't cover ANY of these topics

Just find the tracks in iTunes, mount the flash drive, and drag the tracks from the iTunes window to the flash drive. Or find them in the iTunes Music folder and drag them to the flash drive.

Turn on the Browser view; View menu -> Show Browser. The you can just click on an artist and then click on the album.

Make sure that the album titles are exactly the same. Even an extra space will make it a separate album to iTunes.

I am trying to get photos off of my airport time capsule back up onto my new macbook pro. I followed the above instructions and after I choose the library I want to upgrade and hit continue it wants to open my iPhoto to convert, when I click yes it just gives me the original message and sends me back to this page. Am I missing something?
Is your Time Capsule being used for your TimeMachine back up? Or is it simply being used as an external hard drive?
To use a TimeMachine back up you must first restore it

I have a maxtor sata drive. When I try to use maxblast 3, their partitioning and format program, I can't customize the partition size.
If you are familiar with this app, when I try to set the size, I can't move the slide to increase the size beyond 0.
It is seeing the drive, this is in the windows part of this app. Also, bios is seeing the drive.
I've tried to boot from the cd & floppy and they both hang at where it says that the cd player program is installed.
I have downloaded new programs from maxtor's site, still no luck.
Anyone have this problem, or can tell me what I am missing?
ThanksYes, you have missed something you missed reading the users manual. It's called Logic Pro 7. It came with your Logic Pro 7 software. None of the GM
instruments will work unless you set them up. If you don't want to set anything up then delete all the GM tracks and load a synth into an audio instrument

I have been a Creative fan for a long time, and my latest Creative purchase is a Zen V Plus 8Gb. And very nice it is too. However, what's going on with the software ? I don't get it, my MP3 player software (MediaSource 5) can't RIP in MP3 format, just WMA ? It's got a nice link undeath that says if you want MP3 click here to buy it for an extra $0. I'm stunned, having just paid ?50 for?an MP3?player, not a Windows Media Player. I know it's all kind of similar, but the bottom line is my music collection is MP3, I have MP3 Tag Editors I like, etc, and older devices that don't play WMA. The other annoying thing with the software, MediaSource 5, is that it installs along side MediaSource 3 rather than upgrade it. I have a Creative Audigy ZS Pro with Creative Gigaworks 7. Speakers on my PC which seems to needs MediaSource 3 for the SB Remote control to work, and to adjust sound/speaker settings. Using the creative Software Autoupdate tells me I need to keep and update both MediaSource 3 & 5 on my PC to use both my creative products. I'm not sure who's co-ordinting the creative software/hardware products but right now it seems to me to be a disasterous mess, which is especially anonying as I chose my Creative MP3 player so that I had just software suite for managing my music collection. Two things I hate about Safari 6 - or am I missing something?
I work on the Web on desktop Mac Pros and Safari is my favorite browser for any number of reasons.
But two "improvements" are particularly frustrating:
1) Opt+Com+U
Now it opens some small box at the bottom of the window — is there a way to get the old behavior back where it opens a new window and I can easily enlarge the box to inspect the source code?
2) Safari> Empty Cache (where'd it go?)
Yikes, now I need to go into Preferences> Privacy and clear out All Cookies and Data to empty my Cache?
Or am I missing something, how do I simply clear my cache to ensure my pages completely refresh?
I use these features many times a day in a fast paced work environment and the "improvements" seem counter intuitive...Yes. Click the overlapping rectangle icon to the right of the close box (let me know if you need a screenshot). This segregates the debug console into its own window. To undo it click the same icon - its appearance changes to another sort of rectangle but you'll figure it out.
For some reason Apple thought it was better to obscure the Empty Caches option in the Develop menu, which you must enable in Safari Preferences > Advanced. Keyboard shortcut ⌘ option E
All its previous functions remain, they're just in different places. -
Am I missing something about font management in OS X?

I figure I must be missing something ... all I want is for my fonts (managed using FontAgent Pro) to appear as families within apps - just like Type Reunion made them do in OS 9.
But for some reason I can't seem to achieve this ... surely it's possible.
You know the deal - scroll down the font list in any app, see the name of the family you want with a sub menu showing the styles available in that family.
Any ideas?

Well, I can tell you that you won't find any improvement in Photoshop CS2. I haven't upgraded my other CS apps, but I'd be surprised if they were any different.
Whether or a program displays fonts by family group depends on how the app was written. I know what you mean about Type Reunion. That was a great little app that took care of the problem even if the applications you were using didn't themselves. You Control: Fonts is the only OS X app I've heard of that can do what you're looking for, but doesn't work for all programs. -
I purchased at the airport last week before a long haul flight the MagSafe Airline Adappter so I couod keep working on the MacBook Air without fear of the battery running out before I had completed the necessary work. The shop assistant assured me the kit worked on all planes but......the socket on the flight, both outbound and inbound, was the normal female 2 pin/3 pin socket that I used to use for my old thinkPad. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something obvious here

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I understand your point and have indeed separated them. Since sending the message I have visited the Apple Store to check the picture of the accessory in case I was missing something and I wonder if I am missing the 20mm adapter but, over and above that, I just dont see the right size/shape empower port socket in the plane seat, only the traditional 3 pin/2 pin sockets. I wonder if the salesman was selling me a pig in the poke because the Apple Store also says that it fits some commercial airlines whereas the salesman told me it worked in all flights. I suspect I will need to go to the airline companies direct to see which planes have this particualr Empower port. In the meantime I am tempted to ask for my money back. Geoff -
For the love of Jeebus, please tell me I am missing something with PP's janky audio workflow
OK, I've read the help docs, gone through the tutorials, watched the videos. Still I am not finding an efficient workflow for dealing with audio in PP. Let's face it, audio in 5.5 was completely baffling to us newbies jumping ship from FCP 7, and I thought the CS 6 update was going to simplify things. No dice. As I am a somewhat recent transplant, I am willing to admit that…. wait, nay, I'm HOPING that I am probably missing something here and that it's just stupid operator error. Fingers crossed.
Here's my situation. I am editing a documentary that has hundreds of hours of footage and thousands upon thousands of clips. We are working with three different kinds of audio: stereo, mono 1 & 2 (interviews with a lav mic on channel 1 and boom on channel 2) and mono (interview on channel 1 with lav microphone only). Here's my problems:
If I set the audio so that they're all stereo clips
Then I'm running into problems with the mono 1 & 2 tracks. Say the boom audio is better on the right channel, and I want to silence the left. I turn the left channel off. Then I want the boom audio to be on both channel's equally… well, I can't figure out a way to do that. In FCP, I would just put the pan to center, and the audio would play the right channel's audio on both channels equally. With PP, panning does nothing but adjust how much of the boom is heard, as opposed to how much the lav (now silent) is heard. I can't find a way to pan the boom to the center, so that it is heard equally on both channels.
If I set the audio so that they're all mono 1 & 2 clips
Doing this solves the boom/lav problem as listed above, as the mono tracks seem to center pan and play on both channels equally, so simply deleting the lav works well. However, now if I have a stereo song that I want to keyframe some fades in (say a music bed playing in the background that I want to fade lower when a person starts talking)… now I have to pen tool in keyframes for the left track AND the right track separately, try to get the fades to match on each track, then separately fade the audio back in for each track. So essentially I've DOUBLED my work for each of the tracks I've marked this way.
As a note, I love having found this out the hard way, after editing a 20 minutes interview into bits and pieces scattered across my timeline, and then finding out I should have set the audio to Mono 1 & 2. Easy enough, I thought, as I went back to the Project window, found the original clip, then went to modify the audio so it would work in my project. I got the extremely helpful message that "Any changes you have made to the number of clips or the type of those clips will not be reflected in the existing timelines. Do you want to continue?" YEAH! That's super. You might as well have put "Making this change now will do nothing to help you. You'll have to go back and edit everything again. Do you want to continue?" Great, Adobe, thanks. Bang up job there.
I was really happy about not having to transcode in PP like I used to have to do in FCP 7. That was until I realized how the audio worked, and for the latest scene of this documentary had to go through every clip/camera download to figure out how the audio had to be set-up before I could start editing. Transcoding a big job used to take me a day. Configuring the audio in PP for this one scene took two.
I would be the happiest person on the planet to find out that I've been wasting my time and that there is a simple solution for all of this. Hope someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for any help!I'm not suggesting any of this as a model, and your needs are different than mine.
1) Go to Preferences -> Audio. Under "Default Audio Tracks", Set "Mono Media: Mono". Set "Stereo Media: Mono" (Choices from the pull-down for both are Use File, Mono, Stereo, 5.1, Adaptive)
You can change these, but I don't. I am using both mono and stereo tracks. I set up a custom sequence with the particular combination of stereo and mono tracks I want.
2) Set audio for clips by selecting all clips and going to Modify Clip -> Audio Channels Tab. Under "Number of Audio Tracks" there should be a "1". Under Channel Format it should read "Stereo".
I am not sending the audio to anyone else to edit further. I am doing a final stereo mix. If camera one is set up to record 2 mikes as a stereo track, then I leave that unchanged and put it onto a stereo track. If camera two is set up to record one mike onto channel 1 as ambient sound and channel 2 is a mono feed from a sound board, then I modify those clips as Preset Mono, 2 audio tracks, Channel format Mono, and that puts the left source channel (or whichever I choose) onto Audio track 1, channel 1 (of one), and right source channel onto audio track 2, channel 1.
4) Delete all the existing audio tracks in the sequence and replace them all with mono tracks, so all tracks in the sequence are mono.
I modify the tracks while creating the sequence, and ultimately use a custom sequence.
Under my Effects Controls panel there is only Channel Volume, and nowhere to adjust the pan.
I'm using the mixer, not the effects control panel.
