I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

I had this problem, and found that changing the name of my Time Capsule's hard drive fixed it.
You'll need to use Airport Utility to connect to your Time Capsule.  My Time Capsule drive was named "Time Capsule HD." I renamed it to "Data," and that fixed the problem.

Please help! Got myself a timecapsule a few months back. I just use it to back up my mac, and also have a wireless printer connected. I have a Macbook Pro (Mac OS X 10.7.3). When I first got my Time Capsule it backed up flawlessly, but in the last few months has started showing the message above. So now it wont back up at all.
Have done probably 2 system updates during this time, and even a firmware update a few days ago for the timecapsule. This recent firmware update seem to fix it for a day, but now the problem is back!!! Even Mac support wasnt able to help last time I called.

    Any new info on this?
I had the exact same problem and went crazy and spent a hecka lot of time trying to deal with my brand new 2TB Time Capsule and almost brand new MacBook Pro.  Then I thought I fixed it...and I tried SO MANY things, I don't really know what did it...except taking out any apostrophe's in names of stuff that Apple puts in there...BUT...now it's back.

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Select the System keychain in the list of keychains in the sidebar of the window. If you don't see the list, click the down-arrow icon below the sidebar.
Then select Passwords in the Category list at lower left. Click the Kind heading in the list of keychain items to arrange it by Kind.
Locate the AirPort Disk Password with the name of your Time Capsule. Double-click the item and check the box marked Show Password in the inspector window that opens. You'll be prompted for the administrator login password. Make a note of the AirPort password, then close the inspector window and delete the item.
Also delete any other AirPort DIsk Password items for that same Time Capsule, which may have had a different name in the past.
Quit Keychain Access and try again to back up.

  • HT3275 Backup error w/ Time Capsule -- .sparsebundle could not be accessed (error -1)

I have been using Time Machine on a Time Capsule to back up my 2 MacBook Pros.  Recently, the one running Lion started giving me this error: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/<computername>.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

  • Mac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

I recently installed my time capsule to back up 2 imacs and 2 macbook pros it was running fine until i restarted my imac and then i get a message.(Mac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).) and I would have to reset my time capsule and then go into my air port utility and set it up all over again I am getting really sick of having to redo my time capsule every time . does anyone have any solutions??

I'm having the exact same problem. As my iTunes library was getting too large, I needed to transfer these files to another hardrive. Since doing this, I'm getting the following error message. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/MacBook.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1). I've also recently updated the firmware to my Time Capsule and now having problems with accessing my wi-fi connection. My fix is having to reset my TC, then setup via AirPort to get the connection. Has anyone else in the community experienced this and know a solution? Thanks : )

  • How to solve: The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/IP's Mac mini.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

    Hi,
    Please help!
I set up my time capsule yesterday, and it worked perfectly initially.  However, after I used the same time capsule HDD as network file sharing with my MacBook Pro and two other PCs, than the hourly backup failed and gave the following error message.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/IP’s Mac mini.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
Please help telling me what to do to restore the backup function.
    ipmt

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.
