Pro Tools or Logic

I'm not writing this thread to start a war, its just that I'm having a very hard time deciding between Pro Tools or Logic. I would eventually like to use both, but I can only afford to go with one right now and I really only want to focus my attention on one at this time as well.
Overall, I am really leaning towards Logic with a MOTU interface. However, the more I read the Pro Tools Vs. Logic debate, the more I start to question what to go with. I read so many posts with people bashing Pro Tools, but most people I know use it, most pro studios use it, and most musicians I've researched use it. Logic, on the other hand, seems like a complete package, made more for the creative side of composing/songwriting. I can get an awesome studio set with Logic/MOTU for MUCH less $$ than a Pro tools rig.
However, it seems like going the Pro Tools LE route, Digi 002, (which Is all I can afford at this point), I will be compromising quality overall. The only reason I can see going with Pro Tools is because so many people use it and it would be easy to transfer files with other Pro Tools users. Other than that, I really would like to take the Logic route.
For the record, I play guitar and bass and use drum machines. I would like to start getting more familar with midi and Logic seems like a good program for that.
What do you all think. This decision is really driving me crazy. Thanks.

Jack,
I am a composer who has used Pro Tools since it came out over a decade ago. I have had all kinds of systems, as Digi changed over the years.
I finally ran out of money when HD came out. I could not afford to upgrade my Mix system, yet I wanted to use the most current version of the program, which Mix no longer supported. So I sold it, and got LE and an 002R. I have used this system for over a year. I have done national commercials with it and it has paid for itself many times.
I use a lot of stereo samples. That eats up tracks. The 32 track limit in LE, and the instability of virtual instrument plug ins in LE made me start thinking about Logic. It wasn't the converters in the 002R....they are terrible and you must buy something like an Apogee Mini Me and then it sounds great going in.
But it was a little over a week ago that I bought Logic 7.2. Yesterday, I had a song with 58 tracks playing back just fine on my G5. The virtual instruments work great too. It is a much harder program to use than Pro Tools, but it is much richer and deeper. There are frustrating things about it that make you scratch your head, but these are minor compared to what it gives back to you.
Unless you have over 10 grand to get a REAL Pro Tools system, and then face the fact that it will be replaced by something else in a couple years that will require you to sink thousands more into it, get Logic and take on the learning curve. Pro Tools is best for cutting audio, not dealing with midi and composers. And, I think now that Apple owns it, it will only get better, and probably easier, to work with. Buying into Digi, remember, is buying into a hardware company. They want people to get a "taste" of Pro Tools with LE, and then move up to to HD. They don't understand that most people, with the power of computers today, ain't moving up to a 10 grand system when they can do almost all of that in Logic, or even Digital Performer, Nuendo, etc.
Keep saying this to yourself...."Digidesign is a hardware company. They want and need me to buy HARDWARE to remain in existence. Hardware....hardware...money...more money.

  • Time to switch from Pro Tools to Logic?

The more I work with Final Cut X the more I don't like the Pro Tools interface. I'm repeatedly finding myself automatically using the Final Cut keyboard shortcuts for navigation, and of course they don't work. Is the Logic interface more similar to that of Final Cut X?

Hey I am have just made the switch from Pro Tools to Logic and was hoping if someone could take the time to help me out with a couple questions! Thanks for you patience
    1) For some reason Kore and Motu Symphonic Orchestra aren't showing up in my instruments. When I click and hold the track where I can insert the instrument there is no Motu folder. There is a native instruments folder but kore isn't in there. I've checked both 32bit and 64bit floders for both. How do I get them to show up?
Logic only eats AudioUnits. Are you sure you have the AU versions installed?
    2) When I import an Audio File into a logic session i'm getting "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI. Sample Rate 23938 recognized.Check conflict between Logic Pro and external device" When I playback the imported audio file it sounds terrible it sounds like it plays back at half speed with lots and lots of artifacts. My session setup is at 48K but and so was the audio going in. I wasn't sure what to check for when it was referring to "check conflict between LP and Extern Device"
Check the Audio MIDI Setup utility or the audio interface's own tool and change clock from back and forth from and to what it should be.

  • Pro Tools an Logic at once!

I'm doing a pretty crazy thing I've never heard of before: Logic and Pro Tools on one computer at the same time. Here's how:
    Pro Tools M-Powered 7 and Logic 7 both using M-audio 1814
SPDIF in and out connected to each other
2 midi interfaces plugged into each other
    Logic slaving to Pro Tools
I route the output of logic to the spif and then make the Input on pro tools spdif.
This is totally working and I can't believe it. Now I can use the creation power of Logic with the audio editing power of Pro Tools and not have to do any crazy things to transfer from one to the other! I'm stoked out of my mind!

    Hi Redisred,
Great!!, now I believe you'll want this free little app called "Desktop Manager", since your screen will be cluttered with lots of open windows.
    http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/screenshots.php
Click the download tab to d/l it.
I've tried it and it works very nice. It's so easy to switch between the desktop. And it's free...

  • Pro-tools and Logic

I am looking into getting an Audio Interface. Everybody suggest that i get an Mbox and get into the world of pro-tools because this is the Industry Standard. Logic Pro 7 is my one and only DAW. Still a beginner on this but i am starting to get filmmakers asking for my help.
I am starting to do film music and video/tv jingles. I am sure it's inevitably on some projects that i will mix my own compositions and sound design some indie films. Will M-box 2 work with Logic? Is it inevitable i learn Pro tools as well and do all the mixing here? Thanks

Thanks guys. I think i fairly know logic now and so
do you think it will be easier to learn pro-tools?
It's a different animal. Don't worry about how hard or easy it will be to learn. If you want to learn it, you'll learn it.
iScwartz, very good point... I assume you do
everything in Logic? Also what interface do you use?
Thing is, i only have a G5 imac. So PCI is not for me
at the moment... any suggestions though?
The problem with FW-based interfaces is that some of them suffer from random recording delay offsets (every time you turn on your computer, the offset changes). Do some research here (and elsewhere) to find out which FW-based interfaces do not suffer from this. I'm sure someone will chime in with some info for you.

  • Pro Tools to Logic Pro Learning Curve?

I currently use Pro Tools LE 8.0.1 with the original MBox but am about to upgrade my interface and know I have many options.  I've been told that I'd get more bang for the buck by getting whichever interface I want and going with Logic Pro instead of PT.  From a financial standpoint, that makes sense, since I've seen PT 10 selling for something like $500 or $600.  For those of you who've gone from PT to Logic, was it a huge learning curve?  Do you prefer it?  I do voiceover and simple songwriting "scratch" demos, and that's all - no finals for music and only occasionally, for voiceover.  I honestly don't need anything with a million bells and whistles, but want more than Garage Band.  What's your take on this?
    Thanks,
    Annie

The thing that I advise you is to approach to Logic with the "logic of Logic".
Do not make the mistake of trying to do the same things you did on ProTools at the same way you do on ProTools.
Logic is a bomb, deserves to be interpreted in the right way. Once done, you never go back.
    Learning curve depend from this.

  • Running Pro Tools and Logic Simultaneously

I've been using Logic and Pro Tools together for a while now. I pretty much only use Logic as a Virtual Synth Rack and records the audio into Pro Tools. I use the CoreAudio of my computer with Logic and plug the output of my computer right into the Digi003 rack that I use for Pro Tools. Recently I started running into an issue where I can't use Pro Tools with any other audio/soft synth program. When I do the secondary program starts to make noise as if a MIDI note is being sent to it. It only happens when I have Pro Tools open. It happens when I open Logic, Garagband, MainStage, and any Standalone VSTs. It's frustrating because I'm not able to use Logic the way I used to. Whatever patch I have open, Pro Tools will force it to start playing a low pitch drone which I haven'tbeen able to stop.
I'm currently using Pro Tools LE 8.0.4 and Logic Pro 9.1.5

Logic makes this easy with a command under the File menu to export regions as files (works with midi tracks, too) and another one to export all tracks as audio files (or similar - not at my Mac now).
Once exported, they're easy to import into Protools. This is easier than OMF, but probably not as complete. At least you don't have to buy Digitranslator to do it this way.

  • Pro Tools sees Logic BWF Timestamp as "Out of Range"

Does anyone know why the timestamps of BWFs bounced from Logic 7 are showing up as "Out of Range" when trying to spot them in Pro Tools??
This has really screwed me over.
    Thanks!

PS -- not all of them. About half. I'm not bouncing them, so I can't say for sure that some circumstance is not changing for the various bounces . . .

  • Easiest way of bringing audio files from pro tools to logic w/o using omf

I have a session recorded in pro tools that I am trying to get in logic so I can mix, since logic has way more plug-ins than pro tools but when I import the audio files they all start at 1. I need the files to show up where they were recorded at in pro tools. I tried putting these files in the audio bin first and bringing to the arraange but they still started at 1. Can I get logic to this? if not does anyone know a work around?

You need to consolidate the files in Pro Tools first, so they are all starting from the same point.
From within Pro Tools... select al the regions in Pro Tools, (make sure all tracks are selected) ,place the curser at the end of the song, hold down the shift key, and hit return. This will select the whole session, form bar 1, beat 1.
At this point, if there are tracks with many edits, I will first duplicate them (option/shift/3). These duplicated tracks are then pre-selected for you, and you can go ahead and consolidate them to a folder of your choosing by hitting command/shift/K.
Then open a new Logic song, and add these files to the audio bin. Place them on the arrange page, all starting from bar 1, beat 1, and they'll all play in perfect sync.
I do this frequently, btw, and it works 100% of the time, with absolutely no problems.

  • NEED HELP TRANSFERING FROM PRO TOOLS TO LOGIC!!!!!!!

Hey this is my first post, so hello to everyone on the boards. My question is that I am going into the studio to record live drums this weekend in a studio using pro tools, however i'm doing everything else at home, so i was wondering if anyone knows how i can transfer the audio files from pro tools on one computer to logic on mine. Also, please let me know if it works the other way as well, because i'm going back in to record vocals in the studio. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! THANKS!!!!!

Best way to do this is to "consolidate" the files in PT so that they all start on bar 1, beat 1. Once you do this you can be assured that all files are aligned to start at the same point. Copy the files over to your Logic compute, drag them all into Logic's arrange window and then slide them all to 1 1 1 1. You're good to go.

  • Pro Tools to Logic Pro 8

Hi. I have Pro Tools session in ProTools 6.4.1 and just bought Logic Pro 8. The session in PT was completed (mix, fades, edits) and I want to import the whole session including tracks into Logic. When I did my first attempt, I had to import each track by itself and then try to re-allign/arrange the song. Second and many attempts after, I imported the whole song but it came across as one track. Is there a way to import the whole session in its correct sequence, and track order without having to redo? Iam not so concerend about effects but would like the structure to have the same integrity as when in PT. I am new to Logic and producing my own music so any help would be great. Nothing like trying to piece together 27 tracks all over again. Ahhhhh!

    Hi,
I do this regularly. Here's the catch:
IF you want to keep ALL your automation moves, and EQ / effects / etc... on each track as it was in ProTools, then you have to bounce each track individually. The only thing to remember to TURN OFF is global effects like reverbs / delays / etc... which you used on busses. These you'll hopefully replicate in Logic after the move. Or you can even bounce the effects-only as well.
IF you ONLY want the raw tracks, then the best thing to do is to consolidate each track into a new audio file, making sure that you consolidate ALL OF THEM with the same exact start point. Then import into Logic, line them up to the same start point, and Bob's your uncle.
There are two formats that Logic recognizes for importing sessions from other DAW : OMF (ProTools uses this) and AAF (Final Cut Pro uses this)
    BUT:
They are not 100% bulletproof. So that's why I gave you a detailed way of doing this. It's more work, but it GUARANTEES that when you open the song in Logic, you're not left wondering about any missing pieces.
    Cheers

  • Logic 7.1 and Pro Tools...a few questions...

    Hi everyone,
I just have a couple of questions regarding Logic and Pro Tools. My employer has commissioned me to upgrade his studio from Logic 5.0 (mac os version) to the latest version, which is now 7.1.1 (but we may stick with 7.1 just till I'm sure it won't mess up his setup). I thought I'd post just to get a bit of clarification.
Here are the details of his main theatre studio:
    Pro Tools 6.4.1
    2 x Digidesign 888 I/O Interface
    OS X Panther 10.3.5
    Dual 1.25 GHz G4
    1 Gig DDR SDRAM
I've read and seen a lot of posts regarding big problems running Logic and certain configurations of Pro Tools in conjunction, however until now this has not been a concern for me as my studio is purely based off of core audio Logic 7.1 and Reason 3.03. So here are the main questions I have:
    1. How much is the upgrade going to be? Is is just the standard upgrade or is he going to get shafted and have to buy the whole program again (NOTE: he does have the dongle and all the necessary paperwork from Logic 5.0 mac version)
    2. Are there known problems with the configuration that I've outlined above, I really don't want to suggest he go ahead and a) upgrade b) buy the the program again if he must, if there is going to be a problem, he predominantly works in Pro Tools and Logic will just be available as an added selling point to his studio, and composition ablity.
Any information about this or clarification would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance,
    Graham Campbell
PS - if you need more info to answer don't hesiate to ask.

    Hi Justin,
thanks for the advice/info...I got the quote for the upgrade it'll be 435 Canadian after tax (Just curious if we order the upgrade will it upgrade to 7.1? or do we need to get that seperate, I was confused by your wording).
As for the setup my employer hasn't used Logic at all in a professional setting. He had 5.0 Platinum in case any of his clients needed it however that hasn't been the case, he said it was working fine though. As for Pro Tools, his setup the one I mentioned above, has been rock solid all the way up to 10.3.9 (which he has on two of his other editing sweets). So hopefully that will be the case for Logic as well. I've told him that I think he'll need to address the RAM issue as I'm sure he'll be suprise how quick Sculpture etc eat up the RAM.
My main concern was wether running Logic not using the 'built in audio' driver but rather say the Pro Tools interface would be incompatible, hope that makes sense I haven't done any Pro Tools with Logic set ups before so the wording may wrong. Thanks for the reply though, cheers,
    Graham

  • I bought Logic Studio from a pawn shop with Pro Tools and an iLok. It didn't include the serial numbers, which I thought were on the iLok. Is their any way to us this as an upgrade from like eBay?

Can I buy a used version of Pro Tools with the serial numbers from eBay, then istall Pro Tools and Logic I bought from a pawn shop using them as an upgrade?

If it sounds fishy, it probably is. Serial numbers from eBay typically don't work, because they are stolen, reused, etc. Logic Pro has nothing to do with iLok. And Apples doesn't offer cross-grades or upgrades anymore. If you want their software you go to the Mac App Store application and buy it. That's the only way.

  • How Do You Work Your Logic Files In Sonar and Pro-Tools?

Hey guys, it's my 1st post. I have a MB Pro and Logic Pro 8 and I'm going to be working in a studio that has Sonar and Pro-Tools in another room. I'm going to be doing my pre-production with my MB Pro and then do the mixing in Sonar because the acoustics is bad at home. How do I proceed thus? In what format do I save my Logic File in order to be opened in Sonar and Pro-Tools? Can Sonar read Logic files? Can Pro-Tools read Logic too?

Hi, if >download Additional Content< is still available, then select it and Logic will attempt to download everything needed. If there's no activity then you're done and if something went wrong, on your network for instance, you'll receive an alert stating otherwise I suppose.
    Have a nice day!

  • Logic with Pro Tools HD upgrade

    Hi -
We're using Logic 7.1.1 with a Pro Tools HD system. I'm not at the system right now, but it must be Pro Tools 6.9.x because the machine is running 10.4.5.
When we load large templates with lots of TDM tracks and inputs, Logic quits without any kind of message about 1/3 of the time. The whole machine crashes about every 10th relaunch of Logic. The problem is definitely related to large TDM setups.
My question is: can I expect more stable performance if I upgrade to Logic 7.2 and Pro Tools HD 7 ?
    Thanks for any input.

oh yes, on a new Mac Pro...surely, but what are your experiences with these combination?
I´m using 48 Channels I/O with many outboard equipment on a HD 3 Pro Tools DAE ,,, Logic 7 is running and the DAE maschine is working...:))) cool what?
now we must talk about "all native" to use Pro Tools Hardware and Logic 9 because the 2 "Legends" are not able to create a stabile contact since 2004 in DAE mode...
now I`m interested what user, who worked with logic in DAE Mode ....- whats the way?

  • Integrating my Logic tracks with Pro-Tools

I'm involved in arranging/producing a 12-song cd project...all my arrangements are in Logic 8, and they include several instances of EXS24 soft-synths. My small home-studio is not equipped for recording drums so we're going to track drums (& we'll track bass at same time) at a local pro studio which uses Pro-Tools...
...what is the best way to export my tempo-tracks, vocal-work-demos & soft-synth keybd parts to the studio's pro-tools files?...note that some of my tunes incorporate tempo changes.
And what is the best way to bring those drum & bass trax into my Logic?
    Thanks, Brian
