Pro Tools with my iMac

Hey,
I'm having some worrying troubles with my iMac. I'm running the audio program Pro Tools with it but the iMac is seriously underpeforming. It is claiming to have not enough CPU power for playback with little to no real time plug-ins being used, even if I have the hardware buffer size set to maximum. This is a problem that has been gradually getting worse and more obvious over the last few months. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! Need my studio back!!
Thom

Thanks Miriam,
That's not really the problem though. As I said in my first message this is a problem that has been getting worse. when I first bought my iMac Pro Tools ran fine on it, with the ability to run many real time plug-ins simultaneously, and now it sometimes struggles to playback a single track with either one or no plug-ins. As I said my iMac is seriously underperforming. Would anyone suggest re-installing my OS to try to get back to the computers original level of processing power?

  • How can I use Pro Tools with Fire Wire interface and Fire Wire external HD

If Mac Book Pro has only one Fire Wire jack and I want to use Pro Tools with an M Audio 1814 Firewire interface and an external Fire Wire HD how do I get around the fact that the Mac Book Pro has only one fire wire jack?
Pro Tools says that they DO NOT recommend using USB 2 Hard Drives as recording drives.
If I plug my External HD into the back of the 1814 it is way too slow to use, plus, I don't know why, Pro Tools is telling me that my External HD is "not a valid audio volume". It is a MAC OS Extended (Journaled) external Firewire HD (G-TECH G-DRIVE)
    Stuck...

You could consider getting a firewire hub or get an expresscard 34 adapter with a firewire port.
I personally use a Belkin Expresscard adapter that gives me an extra firewire port as well as two extra USB 2.0 ports.
    Good luck.

  • Anyone use Pro Tools with OS 10.5 G4?

Is there a better music forum? First post -- just back to Mac... Thanks to all

    The developers have forums here:
    http://www.avid.com/US/support/find-support/category/forums
There are plenty of music folk (including me sometimes) who hang out around here in the GarageBand and Logic Pro forums (click the "Discussions" link in "Apple.com > Support > Discussions" above), but that's not going to be a lot of help with Pro Tools, I imagine.

  • GB vs. Pro Tools With Mbox or Apogee Duet 2 and Neumann TLM 102

Any guidance on this is greatly appreciated....I am VO artists really being forced into home recording.  Can not do a USB Mic into the MBP as the sound is not professional enough.  But I do use GB. Based on that, and the fact I only record my voice, I have a series of questions
First question: I'm thinking of getting Apogee Duet 2 as opposed to an Mbox.  Any opinion? The Mbox comes with Pro Tools
Second question: Is Pro Tools better software than GB?  Remember this is for voice-over work.
Third question: Has anyone out there used either the Apogee Duet 2 or Mbox with a Neumann TLM 102 mic? Do you hear a difference between Apogee Duet 2 and Mbox with the Neumann?
Forth question: If you were in my shoes, and just wanted a super duper VO sound, should I be looking at something other than mBox and Apogee?
Again, to be clear: I'm not recording instruments, so I don't need a lot of bells and whistles...just great, and I mean great sound quality...
    Thanks so much
Oh....real important...running OS 10.7.4 if that affects the above... I alos know 10.7.4 is getting upgraded ( spoke to Apple) because of the QT Pro 7 problems, amongst others

Go with the Duet 2, no question.  You'll hear the difference...
Pro Tools and GarageBand are both great apps, its really a question of what your'e trying to do with it.  Unless there's anything you're trying to do but can't do in GarageBand, there's no real advantage to Pro Tools for what you're doing.
Apogee has always been a "no bells and whistles" company - it simply works and sounds great.
    Hope this helps!

  • Comparing MacBook Pro screen with Intel iMac

I'm wondering if anyone here that has a MacBook Pro has had a chance to compare its quality to another mac's screen. I've been working on trying to colour-calibrate my MacBook Pro using SuperCal, and I've noticed that the colour on the MacBook Pro is nowhere near as nice as on the intel iMac.
Obviously expecting a laptop screen to look as good as the larger iMacs is a bit much, but I was still very surprised at the difference in quality.
    Anyone else noticed this?

The MacBook Pro screen is not as bright or vibrant as any plug-in type LCD I've compared it to.
However, it is much nicer than any of my previous laptops (including an Aluminum Powerbook G4). It is significantly brighter, with somewhat better color.
It would be nice if the laptop had a better backlight that could turn on when plugged in, but that's probably up there with my wish for a 2nd processor that would turn on during plug-in as well...
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Why can't I get Pro Tools LE to create a session on my new iMac?

    Summary
I can't get Pro Tools LE to open a session on my brand new iMac.
    Detail
Pro Tools launches but when I go to create a session it seizes up, the beach ball spins and I have to Force Quit and send yet another note to the Apple teacher. It does this without fail. I've tried to rectify this by saving to different locations and different external hard drives. The problem remains the same.
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, stripping the computer of anything that says "digidesign," etc... it doesn't work.
I am using the same Pro Tools with the same OS and the same Digidesign hardware on a MacBook Pro without a problem. Go figure.

    _The Pro Tools LE Software_
    Pro Tools LE 8.0.3
I know what you're thinking... Snow Leopard is the problem. Right?
But the MacBook Pro has proven that theory wrong. The marriage between SL and LE8 on that notebook works fine.
As for LE on the iMac... At first it was 8.0.1 but now it is 8.0.3.
I upgraded to the supposedly Snow Leopard compatible Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 (pre-release) thinking that just maybe SL and LE8 weren't having as much fun together in the iMac bed as they were in the MacBook Pro. The result was identical -- stuck in Nowheresville.
I've been to the Digidesign discussion boards and the best I've been told so far is that my 3 day old iMac is a dud. On the other hand, away from Digidesign intoxication, some of the pros in the biz around town have said it's probably Pro Tools. Pro Tools they say is, at best, troublesome.
I'm planning on bailing out of Pro Tools altogether eventually and moving to an Apogee Duet with Nuendo 4 as I'm annoyed that I spend more time as an amateur paint-by-numbers technician than actually doing the job I'm paid to do. I'm also unhappy with expensive upgrades, lost paid for plugins due to upgrades and being railroaded into buying Avid gear only as demanded by the software.
But, in the meantime... I'm stuck with it. My own suspicions are that the cause of my troubles is the external hard drive and the FW400>FW800 conversion configuration but I'm not about to blow a few hundred bucks for a new hard drive based on a hunch that may not work. Your thoughts?
Any suggestions other than anything that involves screwdrivers and a cavalier mindset with the just out of the box hardware by a complete novice such as I are most welcome.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    I have the same problem.
First I tried PT8LE 8.0 - didn't even start, afterwards i tried 8.0.3pr (1.25GB) - the same result. Now I downloaded the 8.0.3 normal (1.6GB) and it starts, but after I get to open/create new session dialogue box it just gives me the beach ball of death...
When I force quit PT it won't even start again and gets stuck at loading plugins (and there are just the bundeled one, no third party - it's a clean install of the whole machine).
I too have a week old 27" imac i5 with 10.6.2. On my old 24" with 10.6.1 it's runnig smoothly.
My external drives were off during this so I guess it's not a thing of the FireWire ports.
So I guess it's nothing positive or helpful, but You're not alone with this

  • I bought Logic Studio from a pawn shop with Pro Tools and an iLok. It didn't include the serial numbers, which I thought were on the iLok. Is their any way to us this as an upgrade from like eBay?

Can I buy a used version of Pro Tools with the serial numbers from eBay, then istall Pro Tools and Logic I bought from a pawn shop using them as an upgrade?

If it sounds fishy, it probably is. Serial numbers from eBay typically don't work, because they are stolen, reused, etc. Logic Pro has nothing to do with iLok. And Apples doesn't offer cross-grades or upgrades anymore. If you want their software you go to the Mac App Store application and buy it. That's the only way.

You did not remove your Windows partition correctly. You need to remove it using Boot Camp Assistant. If you cannot then you will need to repartition the entire drive back to a single partition/volume.

  • Pro Tools Bench Test

I am looking into buying a new intel core 2 duo iMac. I need to decide between the 20" and the 24" models.
My main reason for getting a Mac is to use Pro Tools M-Powered for recording.
    Option 1:
iMac 20" with 2GB ram and 2.16GHz processor and firewire 400
    Option 2:
iMac 24" with 2GB ram and 2.16GHz processor and firewire 800.
Either computer I will upgrade the ram to 2GB. I am not overly concerned with the screen size and would be perfectly satisfied with 20".
I need to know if anyone has used Pro Tools with around 32 tracks of playback and/or recording with "plugins galore". How valuable would the firewire 800 be? I would only use it for the console with has FW800. Would FW400 suffice? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Go to this link and post that question. You will
have a screaming system with the new intel macs.
Or post it right here like you did. I have a 20" Intel iMac and I use Pro-Tools and it works fine and it's quicker than it was on my G5. Bad news is if you haven't upgraded to Pro Tools 7 you will have to or it will crash your system. In fact you upgrade to 7 and before you open that install the 7.1 patch for Intel Macs. Good luck.

  • 10.4.11 Pro Tools Compatability

As i was installing 10.4.11 through software update an error occoured in the update. I then had to do an archive install. Once installed i ran the 10.4.11 combo update. Everything is working fine except Pro Tools. Everytime i try to launch the application i get the "black screen of death". I have tried uninstalling and re installing pro tools with no luck. I have also verified my HD, along with running the pre binding script application. Do i have to go back to 10.4.9? to reinstall pro tools, and if so is the only way of doing this by archive and installing off my original install disc? I am desperate as this is my lively hood and projects are due!

    Hi Thomas,
I'm not a pro tools user but I have been perusing the digidesign site and was wondering if you had tried downloading and running the OS X Prebinding script? According to digidesign:
"Although Mac OS X 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 have not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, the only known issue at this time has to do with Pro Tools failure to launch in some cases due to improper prebinding. In many cases, downloading and running the Mac OS X Prebinding Script from PACE may resolve the issues described above"
Check out this link, it might be of help: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=54&langid=100&categoryid=35&itemid=229 04

  • Logic 7.1 and Pro Tools...a few questions...

    Hi everyone,
I just have a couple of questions regarding Logic and Pro Tools. My employer has commissioned me to upgrade his studio from Logic 5.0 (mac os version) to the latest version, which is now 7.1.1 (but we may stick with 7.1 just till I'm sure it won't mess up his setup). I thought I'd post just to get a bit of clarification.
Here are the details of his main theatre studio:
    Pro Tools 6.4.1
    2 x Digidesign 888 I/O Interface
    OS X Panther 10.3.5
    Dual 1.25 GHz G4
    1 Gig DDR SDRAM
I've read and seen a lot of posts regarding big problems running Logic and certain configurations of Pro Tools in conjunction, however until now this has not been a concern for me as my studio is purely based off of core audio Logic 7.1 and Reason 3.03. So here are the main questions I have:
    1. How much is the upgrade going to be? Is is just the standard upgrade or is he going to get shafted and have to buy the whole program again (NOTE: he does have the dongle and all the necessary paperwork from Logic 5.0 mac version)
    2. Are there known problems with the configuration that I've outlined above, I really don't want to suggest he go ahead and a) upgrade b) buy the the program again if he must, if there is going to be a problem, he predominantly works in Pro Tools and Logic will just be available as an added selling point to his studio, and composition ablity.
Any information about this or clarification would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance,
    Graham Campbell
PS - if you need more info to answer don't hesiate to ask.

    Hi Justin,
thanks for the advice/info...I got the quote for the upgrade it'll be 435 Canadian after tax (Just curious if we order the upgrade will it upgrade to 7.1? or do we need to get that seperate, I was confused by your wording).
As for the setup my employer hasn't used Logic at all in a professional setting. He had 5.0 Platinum in case any of his clients needed it however that hasn't been the case, he said it was working fine though. As for Pro Tools, his setup the one I mentioned above, has been rock solid all the way up to 10.3.9 (which he has on two of his other editing sweets). So hopefully that will be the case for Logic as well. I've told him that I think he'll need to address the RAM issue as I'm sure he'll be suprise how quick Sculpture etc eat up the RAM.
My main concern was wether running Logic not using the 'built in audio' driver but rather say the Pro Tools interface would be incompatible, hope that makes sense I haven't done any Pro Tools with Logic set ups before so the wording may wrong. Thanks for the reply though, cheers,
    Graham

  • Sending Premiere Pro sequence to Pro Tools for automatic audio conforming

I’m looking to implement an online-offline workflow at my production company, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s feasible to send a sequence from Premiere Pro to Pro Tools with enough metadata to take advantage of Pro Tools’ automatic conforming feature.
Premiere Pro or Audition doesn't seem to have any kind of feature like this, so I’m turning to Pro Tools. Here’s a demonstration of the feature from Avid: http://youtu.be/Gz9e9LuIdXU
For color grading, we’re already sending XML from Premiere Pro into DaVinci Resolve, and DaVinci Resolve perfectly automatically conforms the offline proxies to online high-quality clips suitable for grading. I’m trying to accomplish the same thing with the audio clips to prepare a sequence for sound mixing. The offline proxies in a sequence contain only compressed stereo tracks, but online audio clips have all of the separate uncompressed tracks for each microphone.
My initial thought was that, before any offline editing occurs, I might, in the Premiere Pro Metadata panel, add the names of the sound rolls to all the offline proxies in the “Tape Name” field.
I’m wondering if that metadata for those clips in the Premiere Pro Project Panel are included in an EDL that would be exported out of Premiere Pro, so that Pro Tools would know how to correctly choose online audio clips.
I know EDLs contain timecode, and that seems like it would be sufficient for Pro Tools, if production only occurred within one day. However, if there are audio clips recorded on different days, at the same time of day, some audio clips in a sequence would have identical timecode, and Pro Tools wouldn’t know which clip to automatically conform. It seems like Pro Tools would choose which clip to conform by first looking at timecode, and then if there were multiple clips with the same timecode, it would resolve the conflict by identifying the specific sound roll. This is why it seems important to have the sound roll metadata included in the EDL out of Premiere Pro.
EdiLoad looks like software that might be able to batch update sound roll metadata for an EDL already exported out of Premiere, but I’m not sure.
    http://www.soundsinsync.com/products/ediload
Manually going through Pro Tools and assigning correct sound rolls in a picture-locked cut wouldn’t really be an improvement over manually conforming. If I have to go through a cut and locate online audio clips, I might as well just conform manually.
    So my questions are:
When exporting an EDL out of Premiere, does the EDL include “Tape Name” metadata for Pro Tools to read as a sound roll? If not, is there another format I could use that would make this round-trip feasible?
If not, does anyone have experience with EdiLoad? Would EdiLoad work to do what I'm trying to do?
Is there any other way to accomplish automatic conforming, or something else that I'm missing?
    -- Seth.

    See if this helps.

  • Pro Tools or Logic

I'm not writing this thread to start a war, its just that I'm having a very hard time deciding between Pro Tools or Logic. I would eventually like to use both, but I can only afford to go with one right now and I really only want to focus my attention on one at this time as well.
Overall, I am really leaning towards Logic with a MOTU interface. However, the more I read the Pro Tools Vs. Logic debate, the more I start to question what to go with. I read so many posts with people bashing Pro Tools, but most people I know use it, most pro studios use it, and most musicians I've researched use it. Logic, on the other hand, seems like a complete package, made more for the creative side of composing/songwriting. I can get an awesome studio set with Logic/MOTU for MUCH less $$ than a Pro tools rig.
However, it seems like going the Pro Tools LE route, Digi 002, (which Is all I can afford at this point), I will be compromising quality overall. The only reason I can see going with Pro Tools is because so many people use it and it would be easy to transfer files with other Pro Tools users. Other than that, I really would like to take the Logic route.
For the record, I play guitar and bass and use drum machines. I would like to start getting more familar with midi and Logic seems like a good program for that.
What do you all think. This decision is really driving me crazy. Thanks.

    Jack,
I am a composer who has used Pro Tools since it came out over a decade ago. I have had all kinds of systems, as Digi changed over the years.
I finally ran out of money when HD came out. I could not afford to upgrade my Mix system, yet I wanted to use the most current version of the program, which Mix no longer supported. So I sold it, and got LE and an 002R. I have used this system for over a year. I have done national commercials with it and it has paid for itself many times.
I use a lot of stereo samples. That eats up tracks. The 32 track limit in LE, and the instability of virtual instrument plug ins in LE made me start thinking about Logic. It wasn't the converters in the 002R....they are terrible and you must buy something like an Apogee Mini Me and then it sounds great going in.
But it was a little over a week ago that I bought Logic 7.2. Yesterday, I had a song with 58 tracks playing back just fine on my G5. The virtual instruments work great too. It is a much harder program to use than Pro Tools, but it is much richer and deeper. There are frustrating things about it that make you scratch your head, but these are minor compared to what it gives back to you.
Unless you have over 10 grand to get a REAL Pro Tools system, and then face the fact that it will be replaced by something else in a couple years that will require you to sink thousands more into it, get Logic and take on the learning curve. Pro Tools is best for cutting audio, not dealing with midi and composers. And, I think now that Apple owns it, it will only get better, and probably easier, to work with. Buying into Digi, remember, is buying into a hardware company. They want people to get a "taste" of Pro Tools with LE, and then move up to to HD. They don't understand that most people, with the power of computers today, ain't moving up to a 10 grand system when they can do almost all of that in Logic, or even Digital Performer, Nuendo, etc.
Keep saying this to yourself...."Digidesign is a hardware company. They want and need me to buy HARDWARE to remain in existence. Hardware....hardware...money...more money.
    Tom H
