Pro vs Air for high school?

Hi, I'm currently in year 10 and my new school has a 'bring your Own device' program. Im considering the MacBook Pro or Air but am undecided. I like the fact th air is light, as I will have to carry it around. I also need a long battery life, for school. I want to be able to do my research and school work and well as social things like Facebook and music etc. I'm leaning more to the air but the more I read around the more confused I get. I would like to be able to use it until I finish school, maybe even into university years. Any advice on which to choose would be muchly appreciated!

either one is fine for high school.  it's a personal preference at this point.  however, if you have some idea what you would like to major in when you go to college/university-then which one you chose may make a difference.  For example, a base model Air would be fine for an English major, but a base model Air would be inappropriate for someone majoring in Architecture or Engineering.

  • MacBook Pro or MacBook Air for high school?

I will be going into high school in september and i am looking into getting a MacBook. I would use it for school work as well as music, games, and programs like GarageBand. What would you recommend for me: 13" MacBook Pro or 13" MacBook Air?

If you need to have an optical drive, the base model 13" MacBook Pro is a fairly good product. Weighs a little more than the retina, costs less, and maybe less a theft magnet than the Air or MB/Pro + Retina. With an education discount or a special deals Apple refurbished store (online) price break, you could get the extended AppleCare plan to add a few years support and service coverage. With a discount of $250. that'd cover it.
    {On the other hand, if you wanted to be on a real budget, a repaired restored older MacBook core2duo with some kind of real guarantee could cost you under $400. at a company such as wegenermedia.com}
About RAM and upgrades, be sure the model you get either has plenty of RAM or is one you can add quality RAM to once you buy it. You can look into the download database from Mactracker.ca to see specs for most Macs. Keep in mind the limits suggested on RAM for an OS X are often minimal, considering applications you may also run can double the demand. And Mavericks OS X likes RAM and plenty of hard drive capacity. An older Mac that may not have Mavericks, may do better without it. Snow Leopard 10.6.8 does rather well, and depending on other demands, Lion, Mt Lion, etc do OK, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook or iPad for High School?

I can't decide whether to get a macbook air or iPad for high school. (Sorry I didn't know what 'community' to put this in)

If you have a full computer at home you can use, then an iPad would probably be a great adjunct; highly portable, fine for taking notes, doing email, doing research on the web, etc. If you don't have a computer at home now, then I'd recommend a MacBook, either the Air or the Pro. An iPad is a fine device but there are many things you can do on a full computer that you can't do, or can't do efficiently, on an iPad.
    Regards.

What iPad is best for high school?
Reqirements: Not Allowed iPad Mini must be full sized, 4th Gen or air, runs IOS 7 apps (Compatible with IOS 7) Fast internet browsing.
    What Sized GB is recomended?
P.S Mac 1 Site is a place for purchasing, wollongong.  http://www.mac1.com.au/
    Thankyou, Domi24

What type of school are you going for; what are the requirements you are going to be allowed to run. How long are you keeping the iPad?
If it's light use and only for research purposes, a low GB would be fine
If you plan to use it to store content and school related infomation a 32 may be needed
If you need to create videos; or store larger files 64GB
128? That's heavy use....Need more details on WHAT YOU need.

  • Discount for High school students

I think it's really cool that college students get discount for spotify but it would be great if high school students could get the same thing , it would be amazing to being playing music wherever we want for a low price and since I find spotify better than pandora. $5 is extremely affordable for high school students and a lot would sign up for that price if that was an option

I am 17 and currently attending highschool as a senior.
I agree 100% $9.99 per month is kind of steep when you have a $9.10 /h job and paying for gas/insurance/food/housing/etc... I don't have anything handed to me at all. Sure my parent's will buy me a see's candy once in a while, but I am paying for most of my things now. My job pays for ~~ 90% - 95% of my necesities. that would leave me short.
    Here is a pitch:
Mind of a teenager ~ 10 dollars per month would add up to 120$ per year I use this.... that's a problem.
    -after the fact-
Mind of a teenager ~ $5 per month!! omg that's only $60 per year! sure I'll pay for that.
Honestly I would garentee you my 5$ per month if I had access to premium. $10 is just too much.
I can tell you that I know many highschoolers who would agree with my point and say that the sales would be exponential.
    talking business:
I would expect (based on comments and suggestions from friends and information of who I know as a highschool would also subscribe) expecting 30,000 highschoolers per small state and 50,000 highschoolers per large state.
currently to me it seems only 5,000 or 10,000 highschoolers per state own spotify. (most people lie about information on "free sites")

  • Promotion for high school students?

Is there any promotion or sale for High School students? How does it work? Thanks.

The back to school promotion is for college students or teachers of any grade.  The easiest way of thinking about it is that you have to be 18 to take part in pretty much any sort of sales promotion.  That rules out most high school students.

  • Macbook pro or macbook air 13" for high school?

Hi, I'm entering high school in the fall and I'm saving up for a macbook. I want to get the air, but I'm not sure if the pro is better. All the other websites say it depends on what you're using it for. I'll be using it for basic stuff (Facebook, gmail, homework, movies, iTunes). I went to the Apple store to try them out and I like the air because its super light and the battery lasts really long so I can take it to school if I need it and when I travel. I'll be getting a external hard drive anyway so storage isn't a problem. Also, I can rip my dvds so no superdrive isn't a problem either. I want it to last all through high school and the pro seems more durable and not easily damaged. I'm really leaning towards air and I just wanna make sure its the right choice. Thanks!

It really is a matter of choice . Some food for thought though . The macbook air was designed with students in mind and in some ways is more rugged than the pro . The air using an SSD and not a conventional hard drive can survive knocks that would scramble the drive on a pro . Any notebook by its very nature is exposed to the possibility of dammage that would never affect a desktop . I own both a 13 " pro (2011) and an 11 " air and if I take one with me its the air , the pro sits on my desk .

Both a Mac or a PC can be reliable.  I have a 6 year old PC laptop.

    either one fits this criteria.

And anoher question does Apple give the student discounts to high school/college students just at the beggining of the school year and how do the discounts work?
All year round.  I went into the Apple store and showed them my college ID and got the discount on the spot.

  • MBA or MBP 13" for high school

    Hi Everyone.
Am looking to buy a new laptop to use for Grade 8 and university. Have no clue to go Macbook Pro or Macbook Air. Please Help. I'd use it mostly for pages, keynote, mail and browsing. I also may need to do ocassional short video editing or iphoto stuff. I currently have iPod Touch and may get iPad 2. I take to school, friends houses for projects and stuff. I'm looking at both models in 13" entry. The $1299 Air 13" 128GB flashdrive OR the $1249 Pro 13" 500GB hardrive. I will be using laptop till high school graduation, if durability is a factor.
Please let me know what to do.

The MacBook Air 13 inch has enough storage space for a student. 128GB is plenty as long as you don't start building a movie collection.
    The Pro:
    - Faster processor, slower storage
    - Its upgradable so that you can expand when you need to, in case you do want to start a movie collection
    - It should be more durable, but its also heavier, so I don't know how its gonna survive drops. It will definitely survive gettings sat on by your future girlfriend better than the air. Especially if she's... fat.
    The Air:
    - Slower processor, much faster storage
    - Its so much lighter, so light, so thin, so easy to carry around
    - It comes with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB Storage. Thats plenty of ram, but the storage is border line
    - Higher resolution display
    - Fits easily in your bag
    - Nothing else good to mention but I'm trying!
    Bottom Line:
    - The Pro will run more intensive apps, like full on games!
    - The Air will open apps faster, like iPhoto, iTunes and your mail! (but forget about games)
    - Get the Air. If you're a student like me and want to carry it everywhere and not break your back, you'll want the Air. I could forget it home and I wouldn't know because I can't tell the difference in weight when its in my bag or when its not. It takes very little space too so cramming more books in there is not a problem.
    - You also get many compliments

  • Which is better iPad or Mac for high school students?

I just took SHSAT and my mother promise me that I will get one that I wish if I get in. I did not want to waste that wish and use it on others wastable stuff. So I was thinking that Apple device would make great studying for me in High School. I have iMac but Macbook air is portable and ipad is portable. Both of them are really good. I don't know what to choose. If you can't decide as well, please suggest what should I get. And Please do not tell me I won't go in to spealized high school because I already have a lot of stress.

MacBook Air is the best of both worlds.
The instant on and fast response of an iPad, but has the full size keyboard, full OS X and expandablity of a Mac computer.
The MacBook Air is almost as light as an iPad, but is much more flexible.

  • Help! I need a recommedation for a Mac Book Pro or Air for a singer-songwriter who needs to burn CDs and makes 30 minute to hour-long recordings. Thanks!

I am a hypnotherapist and singer-songwriter who purchased Pro Tools and took a brief class, but I'm not an engineer and it is over my head. I am looking at purchasing a Mac Book Pro or Air to dumb down to a Garageband app in order to keep production moving while I learn Pro Tools.
Can anyone recommend which laptop to get? I now have a Dell Studio XPS with Pro Tools on it. Just need to keep my clients happy, and I make recordings that are 30 minutes to an hour long for them, then burn CD's and/or make mp3s that I email to them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Many thanks!

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.

  • Backpack for High School

I am entering high school this september, and I was hoping that someone could recommend a good backpack. I am looking for one that looks good,  has a compartment for my Macbook Pro I recently purchased as I plan on using it in school, has plenty of room for carrying textbooks and notebooks.
    Thanks for any help!
