Pro vs. Express?

I need to know whether or not to get Pro or Express. I've heard that it doesn't include multi-camera editing capabilities. What is the disadvantage to this? And can you all name any other shortcomings it may have compared to Pro? I'm obviously doing research on it right now but I'd like some input from the forum-goers. Thanks.

He didn't say whether he had bought the MBP exclusively for video editing or not.
If he was REALLY serious wouldn't he get a Mac Pro?
We need to know more about Du-Cator's previous experience and future ambitions.
I am glad I didn't get FCP because I only use a tiny fraction of what FCE has to offer. In fact my film-making has almost dropped to zero. I am not unique in this and know of many others with a similar story to tell.
I have Premiere 6.5 which is even closer to FCP's capabilities but never even touch it now.
I believe that except for a few professionals with very specific needs, FCE has more than enough capabilities to satisfy most editors. I have a number of friends with the latest top of the range Macs (plural) and FC Studio and they admit it is really overkill and they just wanted to get rid of some money.

  • Transferring footage from Sony V1U to Final Pro Cut Express...HELP!!

    Hi Guys,
I have been trying to transfer my footage from my V1U to my IMAC for days and am getting no where. At first I thought it was because Imovie didn't work with my V1U. So I went out and bought Final Pro Cut express today. I still CAN'T transfer my footage.
BTW, I am using a firewire 800 and my MAC is only a week old.
Does anyone have any advice on how to do this? I am about to pull my hair out.
    Thanks!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
HDV is not captured like DV.
It's a must to use the correct setup in easy setup dialog to fit your shooted material on tape.
Here's the trail to follow if you want to edit in HD (by the way I use a SONY FX1 that can shoot in HD mode or standard definition DV- mode: wide or standard screen).
    On my FX1
-find the camera menu and set the recording format to HDV (it sould be 1080i60 as it's the HDV format used by this model).
-Set the output format to automatic or 1080i60 (this is the type of signal that will be outputed by your camcorder upon capture via firewire).
-turn off you camcorder and mac.
-Plug both devices with a firewire cable.
-turn on the FX1 AND the mac.
    -Start FCE HD
    In Final Cut Express HD
-Use "Easy Setup..." command in Final Cut express menu , select HD in format tab, 29.97 in rate tab and HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. Click "Setup" button.
-From this point, any new sequences and capture session will occur in Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (the format used to edit in HDV).
-Use command-8 to open the capture window. HDV is captured via a simple dialog. There are no capture settings or log clips info.
-Start your camcorder in *VCR mode*(the play button on camcorder or on remote) and click the capture now button into FCE HD.
NOTES: there is no sound from your MAC upon capturing. There is a lag time between what is played on your cam and what you can see on your mac screen, so use the camcorder screen to monitor the content.
-Hit the "ESC" key when you want to stop the capturing process.
Once the esc key is pressed, your mac will continue to process the captured material and the capture window should close.
That's the way to capture HDV material into FCE HD.

  • How to set output 1 and 2 and master in pro logic express when mixing

what is the recommended procedure for setting the levels of output 1 and 2 fader and the master fain pro logic express when mixing? I'm used to just one master fader with my Mackie board.  Is there anything in the manual?

i'm planning to buy a pair.. but i'm not sure if it will fit....
one end plugs into the motherboard.. the other end goes into the vid card
but the question is does it fit the Mac Pro pci express power socket?
and the other end of it does it fit any standard pc vid card? or is it also smaller?
as i plan to buy this for my Mac Pro so i can power up the 8800 gtx
    thanks!

"Connecting the range extender to an Ethernet network so that the range extender could act as a wireless access point instead of a range extender."
Yes, I am essentially using it as an access point for the Mac Pro (attaching a simple ethernet cord in the back, it will automatically get a handshake with the network), and a wireless extender for my P.C. laptop and Power Mac G4.
If this doesnt work, I'm gonna move my cable modem and wireless router to my office (and attach Mac Pro directly to modem or router).
I dont want to have to buy a new Apple Router when I have a perfectly good D-link system going. It currently works with my roomates Powerbook and Airport Express Sation (air tunes), as we got it working last night. If all else fails, I wait till the new express card comes out and get it installed at my local store.

I have had this problem for close to a year. I have an Extreme base station, two Airport Express's and multiple G4 Mac's with up to date software. I have spent a huge amount of time trouble shooting, resetting, reapplying software and finally calling Applecare without any help. It would be great to get this problem solved.

  • Pro Logic Express

Just brought a new i7 imac.  Brought Pro Logic Express 7 online and now my computer will not allow the programme to open up?
Not too sure what to do.

    Hi,
    That's a bit of a disappointment...
From memory I think that Logic Express 7 was not compatible with Intel Macs...
Perhaps you can return it and get Logic Express 9...

  • How can I upgrade to Pro From Express

    Hi,
I currently have Logic Express 9.0.0 and would like to upgrade to Logic Pro (or Studio?). Can I simply download Pro and install it on top of Express? Is the price pro-rated?
    Thanks!

    There is no pro-rated price.
Logic has been reduced to $199 from the app store...... mainly so Apple can sell more hardware.
Next year they will be giving it away... (kidding, hopefully)
The main content, application and support files is a 2.5 GB download, the additional content, Jampacks, Loops, is many, many more GB than that.

  • Converting Final Cut Pro to Express

I had someone do a project for me using Final Cut Pro. Can I take that file and open it in Final Cut Express and do some of my own editing?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Final Cut Express can handle Final Cut pro 4 HD documents. I use all lessons included in "Apple Pro training Series- Final Cut Pro HD version 4" volume.
When FCE 2 came out, it was based on FCP 4 code, and many capabilities from this particular version of FCP were incude in FCE, we can call them "Twins".
Alas, FCE can handles only DV and HDV (Apple intermediate Codec), and not 24p.
You can double-click on a copy of your FCP document and see what will hapen, but if you do not have DV media on your mac, all clips will be disconnected from their source files, thus the editing will be impossible.
    Good luck.

  • Need Help for New Purchase - Macbook Pro 8gb & express slot

    Hello All,
I needed some advise or rather clarification on a new purchase of a Macbook Pro.
I became a bit disheartened ever since the new Macbook Pros replaced the express slot with the SD card reader.
I want a 15" Macbook Pro , with 8gb of expandable ram (Or at least have the option) , 512 video - graphics memory , & the express slot.
I DO NOT WANT the 17' because it becomes too bulky.
Here is what i was looking at: (15" macbook pro - 2.93ghz core 2 duo, 512 video, express slot, 4gb ram, etc) -$1,949 - Basically the model just prior to the new line with the express slot instead of the card reader.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0GR3LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
In this description , it states that the ram is limited to 4gb , but i find that hard to believe, seeing as how the previous model (early 2009) allowed for upto 8gb of ram i believe.
Secondly, the link below (toward the bottom) outlines that the Macbook Pro, depending on the processor (2.66 or above) , do allow for 8gb or ram.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro
I have gotten mixed information, and needed to clarify before i make this large investment.
Any advise that can be offered would be a big help.
    Thank you.
    -Parag

I saw your post and thought I could definitely help ya out on some of your questions.
First of all, yes - All the latest MBP's support up to 8GB RAM. (I'd recommend buying the RAM at "Other World Computing" as opposed to upgrading through Apple though. It's about 60% cheaper and is quite easy to install)
I find it very frustrating that the 13" & 15" MBP's no longer have a way to expand functionality via an Express-Card slot. There's really no work around on this other than going with the 17". However, I know how bulky that, and I love my 13" in comparison. The only other possibility would be to find a 15" from their previous series of MBP's (they come with only 4GB RAM, but actually will support up to 6GB).
I do love my new 13", and unless you definitely need the Express Card reader, I definitely reccommend the purchase. Good Luck!

  • MacBook Pro + Logic Express 7.1.1 = No Sound?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and transferred logic express 7.1.1 onto it from my PowerBook. Now it doesn't make sound, and, being more or less illiterate with the software, I have no idea how to fix it.
I've checked online, and there are no apparent updates available to me. One troubleshooting forum suggested that I get Logic Express 7.2.3, but as far as I can tell right now, that's not a possibility unless I want to spend significantly more money than this is worth.
So right now I have a 2-year old, $300 dollar program that I cannot use. Any suggestions?
    Thanks you for your time.

I think that you should read some Logc manuals or make a search here for "no sound"......
But to obtain the best from your mac, as noeqplease states, upgrade to 8.
    cheers

  • Pro to Express

If I edit movies on Final Cut Pro at the mac lab in my school and want to edit it on my macbook using Final Cut Express, would I be able to do this?

You can export a version 2 XML file of your project from FCP and drag that into the FCE browser to load it. It will work for most things. I would not use this as a regular routine. The FCE project will open in FCP without problem.

  • ATV2 + iPhone 4 + MacBook Pro + Airport Express

    Hi,
I have ATV2, an iPhone 4 (iOS 4.2.1), a MacBook Pro and Airport Express. I have no internet access (dsl or the like) at home.
How can I connect my iPhone 4 to ATV2 and stream videos etc. using Air Play? Do I have to set up a home network first (using my MacBook and Airport Express), and if yes how I can I do that without having internet access?
Please help, I am getting desparate...
    Thank you, Nick

You don't need an internet connection to create a wifi network using your AirPort Express and the AirPort Utility (Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility). Once it's setup, devices that have joined that network will see each other and work with AirPlay but won't be able to access the internet, at least not through wifi.

  • Pro V Express?

Is Logic Pro worth the extra 500 quid.

Michael, this is very helpful but to help me make my
mind up could you answer this question.
Is the difference between Garageband and Logic
Express the same as Logic Express and Logic Pro.
    Dora.
Logic Express is a BIG jump up from GB.
Don't get me wrong; you can produce some excellent stuff with Logic Express. No question. And it IS worth its (VERY) low price. There are huge differences between LE and GB, and I would definitely go with LE if you are serious about making good music. You'll run into the 'wall' with GB a lot quicker than with LE.
    BUT....
your question was about LE compared to LP. THERE'S the real issue. Logic Pro is a great DAW; easily the most full featured (although with the release of Live 6, Sonar 6, Cubase 4, DP 5, etc), it's getting a little behind. Apple is not being forthright with users; it says "Logic Pro has 64 busses while Logic Express has 8 (actually its 12)". Well, that's true; except, busses don't behave the same way in LE as they do in LP (go to the link I posted for a detailed rant!). WHY would Apple do this? The effects/instruments that come with LP used to sell for over $1000 ALONE (that's why so many Logic Platinum 6 users were annoyed when Apple simply bundled the whole thing without any notice). That is enough to justify the cost difference between LE and LP.
The fact is, LE is ONLY designed to get people to buy LP; that is the only explanation for its crippled design. LE is great, and much better than GB, but it, too, has walls, and you will hit them faster than you think, based on Apple's specs alone.

  • Logic Pro from express

No instrument tracks show up when loading logic pro and I can't see the virtual instruments that you get with the package, this is rather frustrating.

You mentioned that you were using Express. Then you should know
how to change any track into a Inst track. Also Express and Pro have
templates that include Inst tracks, dont you use them? If you are using a
custom template why didn't you put Inst tracks into it? Now what I suspect
(by the wording of your post) is that you aren't loading a virtual instrument
into the Inst track, could I be getting warm? If this is the case, then you need to look at the Getting Started with Logic guide that came with the program.

  • Difference Between Pro and Express 8

So I've been using my brother's Logic Pro but he's decided to start recording again so it's a hassle as when he wants to record I can't, so obviously I will have to buy some software ASAP.
But I've been using Pro and it costs £280 or so for the studio package. Is express the same without the jam packs and such? Basically I use the drums/percussion and bass guitars (until I can buy one) but no other instruments; I also use the plug in effects. Does it have all of this in express 8 as it would save me a shed load of money if I bought that.

You can find your answer in the old dirty way: comparing tech specs......
    http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/specs/
    http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/logicpro/specs.html
and don't forget that Logic Pro is part of Logic Studio.......
