  • Why does the window freeze sometimes, and why can't I log on to my e-mail?

When I get my window and click on to Firefox, the comcastwidow opens. I then want to go to my e-mail. I click several times and nothing happens. Then I try to close the window, thinking I will start over, but the window freezes. There is no reaction to my clicking to close. Everything is frozen.

Well it works for me,  am using the Firefox browser, there are issue with IE at the moment.

  • Why does my 4S stay warm and display very high usage?

I have an iPhone 4S and the battery life is unbelievably poor. Sitting in my pocket on standby it drains 7-10% per hour. However, if I go to settings > general > usage it shows a very high amount of usage - say 40 minutes usage for every 1 hour standby. On top of this the phone is almost always warm to the touch. Obviously it's not meant to be this way.
I have tried restoring to factory settings. I have tried recovery/dfu restoring. Even with adding no data or apps to the basic restore, I'm still seeing the same strange usage and battery drain.
On top of this I've also installed iOS 5.0.1 betas 1 and 2. Again I saw no improvement.
Any ideas on what further I can try? I'd really love to be able to get through a day without having to constantly have the phone on charge.

Just in case anyone comes here wondering about the answer to my issues. I got the phone replaced and the replacement has much better battery life with the exact same software, so I'm guessing that I just had a defective phone.
It's weird though as all the signs pointed to it being a software issue. Oh well, it's not like I hadn't tried everything, so I just got it replaced (gotta love that customer service). It was interesting watching the Genius say stuff like "ah but you can fix the battery life problem by turning off X..." [goes through settings] "oh, you already have that turned off"
The usage numbers still seem a bit high on the new one, but on day 1 it's managed 14h27m standby, 4h24m usage (real usage is more like 2h) and it's on 33% battery remaining at nearly midnight. That's just about acceptable, and an upgrade to 5.0.1 should get it running even better I presume. The old phone would probably have died a good few hours ago, so this one is about twice as good.

  • When I turn my ipod on why does the screen stay blank and then turn itself off?

When I turn my ipod on the normal start up screen appears with the apple logo in the middle, but then after a few seconds the screen goes blank and it turns itself off. It was working fine the other day. I even charged it overnight to make sure that it wasnt because it was out of battery. I dont know what to do, it has over 600 songs on it and around 300 photos, I know that the memory isnt full because I checked the other day and it said I had around 1GB left. I cant do anything on at all because the screen just goes blank and then turns itself off. Please help, thank you

Well, I strongly suspect that a gig isn't quite enough "extra" storage to allow operation.
However, first, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Why does my Mac stay on the white screen when I turn it on?

Why does my Mac stay on white screen when I turn it on?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 4
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 5
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 6.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 6
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 7
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 8
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 9
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 10
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Why does long list of files and subfolders scroll to top of finder window when a folder midway or down the list is opened?

I am not sure how long ago this first occured, but when I upgraded to OS 10.8, I was hoping this would correct itself.  Now I am not sure if it is a bug or just the way Finder works.  When I have a Finder window with many files and folders, and I open a folder > midway through the list while previous files and/or folders have already scroll off the top of the window, the window scrolls up to the beginning of the list and I need to scoll back down to wee what is in the folder.
I thought the finder window stayed steady and the folder openned revealing its contents without the finder window scrolling.  The only work around I have found for this is to always double-click a folder open, so it is the new Finder window.
    Problem or not?
    Thanks,
    Ray

About the only thing I can say is to keep going to Verizon, or calling customer service to get them to look at the issues. I talked to 1 rep that told me to dial either 4# symbols, or 4* symbols (Can't remember which it was) after I got the VM message but did not have the phone ring, so it would mark my account record and they could search and troubleshoot the issue.
As far as your upgrade, I think you have done the right thing so far, and that is signing up on this forum, that way you can look at the different phone forums and see what issues that people are having. Talking to people that have the phone is a great way to find out what the issues are. Verizon Sales reps will only sell you the latest and greatest, or if there is something that they are being told to push to get out of stock.
Going with an iPhone is ok, just make sure it is correct for you, because like you said earlier, once it is done, it is done and you are stuck with it for 2 years. I had a friend who made a knee-jerk reaction to a bad phone, and did the same thing. They regretted it after 6 months. I am not saying the iPhone will be bad for you, just make sure you do your homework.

  • Why does my screen turn blue and freeze every time i try to plug in my 'mini display to hdmi' cable into my thunderbolt port in order to use an external monitor?

why does my screen turn blue and freeze every time i try to plug in my 'mini display to hdmi' cable into my thunderbolt port in order to use an external monitor? it only works if i turn the computer on with it already plugged in.

Do you have gfxCardStatus installed?  Is your monitor set to "Integrated" or "Discrete".  You want it set to Discrete to drive the external HDMI display.
Try resetting the PRAM and SMC
    <About NVRAM and PRAM>
<Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)>
Are you sure you have a good miniDisplayPort to HDMI cable?
Do you have another HDMI display you can test against (your neighbor's HDMI capable TV).
Do you have friend that can test the cable using their Mac and maybe their TV or a monitor that has HDMI input.

Look under system preferences on the mac at what is be controlled?  Look at Mail, Contacts, Calendars.  How many accounts are managing contacts?  Just the cloud? the cloud and gmail? or cloud, gmail, yahoo, and exchange?  If you have more than one contact account, then you will have different contact lists, if John Smith shows up in more than one of your contact lists, you will have multiple entries.
Pick a contact list that is your master, (I use iCloud), only turn on contact syncing for it.  The same for your phone.  Spend some time on the iCloud webset (www.icloud.com) and work on your contact list there.  Clean it up, remove duplicates, etc...Changes will auto sync back to all your devices.  Life gets much simplier.
Just remember, if you sync different contacts lists and a large number of people appear in your different lists, then they will appear as duplicates.
