Prob trying to backup iPhone
I have a problem with making a backup from an iPhone: the iPhone was activated about 3 months ago on my (Windows XP) laptop. Since then it was not hooked up to any pc anymore. It was only synced with our MS Exchange/AD.
Now the owner wants me to make a backup of his iPhone and to install the newest iPhone OS 3.1.2.
And here´s the problem: when I connect the iPhone with any(!) PC System, a dialogue appears, asking me if I want to setup the iPhone as a new iPhone or if I want to restore it from a backup. Its name, memory usage... are not recognized. It seems to have never been activated before.
If I connect any other iPhone, iTunes displays the iPhone´s Name etc. right away.
The iPhone that causes the trouble is of course not jailbreaked or anything like that.
The main problem now is, that if I set up the iPhone as a new iPhone, all personal data, like contacgroups, notes, assignments... are lost afaik - or am I wrong with this information?.
So how can I backup and upgrade this iPhone?
I´ve tried it on different Windows based systems always with the newest iTunes software available.

If it's in recovery mode, there is nothing left to back up. Anything that was on the phone is already gone.
You have no choice but to restore.

Anyone having their iTunes freeze whenever trying to "backup iPhone"?
I was having this problem earlier, as it would freeze about 1/3 of the way through the backup process. I kept looking for a solution but I couldn't find much. Finally, I deleted all of the apps on my phone and it worked like a charm. I hear that Facebook and ESPN Scorecenter sometimes cause this problem alone, so you might try deleting those 2 first if you don't want to delete all of them. Hope this helps!
Yes! My iPhone will not sync past the backup process. Appears to hang about 66-75% of the way through. I don't have Facebook or ESPN installed. Trying to see if I am just being impatient or if it is really hung... Actually after about 30 minutes of backing up the sync completed. May just take a long time since it was the first backup since upgrading to 3.0...

Trying to backup iPhone 4 but getting two bad options?
My friend's got an iPhone 4 w/ iOS 4.3 on it. He apparently never hooked it up to iTunes before (or if he did, it may have been once).
He wants to go out to get an iPhone 5 but we need to back it up first. However, when we plug in to my Mac and iTunes loads, it gives two options:
-> setting it up as a new phone, or
-> restoring from a previous back up.
option two is clearly a no-go as he doesn't want to lose years of data, photos, texts, etc.
however, from what I have read here:

it seems like option 1 will do what we need and only lose his music which he doesn't care.
that all being said, it's a scary option as losing his info is also a non-started.
Can anyone confirm that "setting it up as a new phone" will in fact not erase things but only rename it and re-activate it?

-- joshuaIt is not call "RESTORE" as new, it's called SetUp as new. That link about backing up is completely irrelevent. It has no option to back up. It's a phone that's been used to 2 years, works perfectly, but can not get to a typical backup screen and is stuck as listed above:

While trying to back-up iphone 4 itunes started an update...when i went back to check on back-up phone was in recovery mode says it has to be restored to its original setting by clincking Restore. This is a DRS phone & I must be able to back this phone up to synch with his new iphone 5. What can I do ?

Trying to backup iPhone 3GS to switch to 4S
I initially tried to transfer purchases and it kept freezing at the first app. So, I thought I would just go straight for the back up. The first part of the back up worked but then froze again, when it started trying to transfer apps.
I have the newest version of iTunes. The 3GS hasn't been updated to iOS5. I have shut down and restarted everything. Any idea what I should try next?Oh and it is freezing on Facebook. An app that is already in iTunes.

When you set up photo stream on a device that takes pictures, then only newly taken pictures go to photo stream, not older ones. To get them to photo stream, you must sync them to a computer and then on that computer (in iphone or Aperture if using a mac) copy the photos to the photo stream group.

My wife and I have iPhone 5. She has iPad ver 3, I have iPad ver 1. I set up iTunes on my PC w my iPad and iPhone and ICloud backup. I tried to backup my wife's iphone to the iCloud by hooking up to my PC. I checked the new iPhone box but it sync'd the phone to my accoount. How do I set up her iCloud account to backup her phone then sync w her iPad?
iTunes on your computer has nothing to do with an iCloud backup. If you wife's phone is backing up to your iCloud account it's because you are sharing the same account. Migrating her phone to a separate iCloud account will fix this.
If you want to mirate her iPad to a separate account, start by saving any photo stream photos that she wishes to keep on your iPad to her camera roll by opening the my photo stream album, tap Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account her iPad, not from iCloud. your devices will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPad. Then sign back in with a separate Apple ID to create her new account and choose Merge to upload the data to her account. Note: you can continue to share the same ID for iTunes, it does not need to be the same as the ID used for iCloud. -
I am trying to backup my iPhone but the email used for my Apple ID has been deactivated so I can no longer log into my account or back up my iPhone. How do I back it up otherwise? Or how do I change my email?

my iPhone was stolen. I just got a new one and am trying to backup my contacts and data from iCloud. How do you do that?
If your backup is in iCloud, and your new iPhone is already set up, go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, then go throught the setup screens on the iPhone and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts. (If it isn't set up yet, just choose this option when setting it up.)
Be sure your iPhone it connected to wifi and your charger while it is restoring the backup. -
i am on iTunes 11.4.04. My iphone iOs is 6.1.3 and has 14 GB. I am trying to backup on my iMac iOs 10.6.8 and it has 113 GB free, But I am getting error messgae that computer doesnt have enough free space
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues, contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network connectivity issues. -
i had a iphone 3gs on contract which ended so i upgraded to 4s. had the 3gs cleaned as a second phone for my partner. i then allowed the sync between the 2 so whatever was on mine would be on the other and vise versa. this meant the contacts was aswell so i deleted them not knowing they would be removed from both, i then tried a backup to icloud to restore the lost canotacts instead it seemed to clone my new 4s from my old 3gs and now the features on the 4s wont work. music and tunes have been lost along with all my messages
please help mePlug your phone into the wall charger for at least 30 minutes...make sure you have a sim card in the phone...then:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.
Make sure you have no anti-virus software running or any firewalls...turn all of that stuff off. -
I have recently done the update to my iphone and then tried to backup my iphone to itunes and an error meesage has occured and now my phone isn't responding to anything and is stating that it needs to be restored back to manufacturers settings, Can anyone help?
