Probably a simple newbie question...

Hi. I'm teaching myself DVD SP (4.2) by putting together a very simple project but am stumped on what's probably an obvious solution.
I have as my first play a quick slideshow with an accompanying music track. It automatically goes into my main Menu as its End Jump. I'd like that music track to continue on uninterrupted into the Menu. How do I do that? Right now it cuts out as it goes into the Menu.

Make the slideshow in the other apps or you can change the slideshow to a track (make sure to make a copy it is only one way conversion) then bring that into a track (or add the other elements to the end of the converted slideshow) and use buttons over video to make a "menu"
Often you can make the similar slideshow quickly in iMovie or iPhoto if needed then bring that into FInal Cut (or AE) to finish the rest of the movie

Probably a simple networking question (newbie here)

Hi everyone,
When I installed Solaris 10 inside of a VMWare Workstation vm, I got to the portion of the network configuration where it asked about LDAP or DNS or NFS, and I chose "None" because my setup is not a member of a domain. Now, when I go online, I have no Internet connection.
I have the interface listed in ifconfig -a and it has an IP address of 192.168.0.4 issued by DHCP. Everything is right, except there is no Default Gateway listed, nor does it have my DNS servers listed.
How would I go about setting these in Solaris? I'm not entirely familiar with vi or edit, so a step-by-step will be nice.
I should note, that I'm able to access my Windows Workgroup computer (the physical host) and copy files from it. I just don't have any Internet access. Also, the IP for my physical computer (the Windows share) is my DNS IP, although that shouldn't matter.

First of all, in /etc/hosts file ;
the first line indicates loopback address(IP) & the second line indicates the IP of the your machine followed by the hostname ( which is "unknown in your case as you have not assigned any hostname). The commented line in second line tells that , the IP is assigned by a dhcp-server.
you can assign router IP in a file called "/etc/defaultrouter".you only have to give the IP address of the router in this file.To make this as default router address for you system , you have reboot the system.
You can change your hostname from "unknown" by issuing this command :
#setuname -n XYZ
(where XYZ is the new hostname)
you can also check the changed hostname by doing this ;
#uname -n

Probably a stupid Newb question....chkconfig

Hi all,
This is a very nice distro, especially if you wanted to learn linux, not just use it with a pretty GUI, and it has met ( sometimes exceeded ) my expectations.
The searching the forums, using google extensively, the wiki have made the experience most worthwhile. The first distro was mandrake, which lasted about 1 month because I could not learn anything with it. Anyway on to the question at hand.
What is the Arch linux equivalent of chkconfig? Or does one have to download the package itself via pacman?
The reason I ask is that I would like to turn off all unneeded services ( I am a bit of a security hound, at least with a windows box ). The Linux box will just be a workstation for myself, to do email, web surfing, maybe some online buying and eventually development. No remote access to the machine is needed for myself ( as it is off, when I am not using it ).
Hopefully, I phrased the question correctly!

2 simple newbie questions!

1. Is there any way to make a class execute another class's method every x minutes (say 5)? like an external signal that every 5 minutes executes "regelsysteem.genereerOverzicht()"
2. i would like to retrieve the system's current time and date (in string format), how could i do this?

Probably a Stupid Newbie Question, but....

Picked up a 8300 series Curve a couple of weeks ago. Had it synched with my Outlook on my pc. About a week ago the synch stopped working and I noticed that when the phone was plugged into the USB cord the little charger symbol would only stay lit up for about 7 seconds before disappearing. On the Desktop Manager screen its says "Device Connected: (PIN): None" Thinking it was perhaps a faulty USB cord (after unplugging and restarting it several times) I bought a new USB Cord, and now the charger symbol won't even light up and it remains "Device Connected: (PIN): None"
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

Hopefully simple newbie question

Hi, I just started using NetBeans 5.5 and Java in general.
I have a created a .jar stand alone program that works fine. I created it from a general project in NetBeans.
I would now like to "deploy" this program via the web somehow so other people can use it. I'm not sure the easiest way to do this (aside form a straight link to a .jar file in a web page).
I saw something about JNLP files, which I don't know much about , but when I looked in the NetBeans help it seemed to suggest that I could right click on my project to have an option to build a JNLP file, but that option doesn't exist (I think I figured out that it had something to do with it only working for module suites possibly, but I don't know what that is at this stage).
So, if JNLP is the easiest way, what is the simplest way for me to create a JNLP that will work? The information on how to do this was a bit confusing for me.
Would trying to turn it into an applet be easier? That seems to involve a lot of recoding since it is currently stand alone.

Simple newbie question about arrays..

Hello all,
I have two arrays declared like so below the class header:
String Players[];
String Final[];
I have a method like the following:
public String[] CollectPlayers() {
Players[0] = new String(txtPlayer1.getString());
return Players;
I am calling this method like so
Final = CollectPlayers();
Basically not working, giving nullpointerexception, but I feel that I am fundamentally not understanding something, so here is what I want...
A method that returns an array and (ideally) use this method directly in creating a ChoiceGroup, like this...
optBull = new ChoiceGroup("Bully", ChoiceGroup.EXCLUSIVE, CollectPlayers(), arrImage);
Is this possible? Any ideas?

A few points:
- You almost never need to call new String(String).
- You may want to create an ArrayList (dynamic array) and then call toArray(new Players[0]) if you need it to be a fixed array.
e.g.

Simple Newbie Question Re: Tutorial

Hi,
In the tutorial I click on a clip in FCP, send it to Motion to edit, and even before I start editing, I preview it back FCP and the video is squished. The clip went from 16x9 to 4x3. Even when I follow exact instructions it does the same thing. What can I do?

Newb Question for burning DVD/CDs

I have an external DVD writer on my iMac.
I got the thing last month and an completely new to Apple (sorta)
Now how do I make a data CD and DVD?
On Winblows XP all I need to do is select the files, right click and click on SEND FILES TO CD for making data CDs.
However for DVD I need 3rd party software.
Will iDVD do the trick?

I was just reading abotu burning CD on another site. It mentions about what you said, drag the files to the CD.
However I am reading in my profiler that burning is NOT supported by OS X on this CD/DVD writer.
Will Patchburn or any other software overcome this?

Dumb newbie question -- shell vrs linux console

This is probably a dumb newbie question, but what is the difference between the shell screen and the linux console screen? I used another system before Arch and I believe there was only the shell screen! Does it matter which one is used? Thanks -- Larry

The console is the 2D text rendering thing. The shell is Bash, just a program that handles your input and has the console as output.
If on the other hand you mean the console at startup, and you call that the console while you call xterm, etc. shells then the answer is different. It's just a matter of configuration if you automatically start X or not. A lot people use gdm or kdm to get a graphical login screen after bootup, others just type "startx" in the console when they want to start X.
You can switch to the console with Ctrl+Alt+Fn where n is a number between 1 and 6. You can switch between consoles with Alt+Fn, X is on the last console, so to go back to X do Alt+F7.

If you are using Address Book, open it, create a new Group, select all you contacts by click the top one while holding down the shift key and then select the last one. Drag the contacts to the group, then send an e-mail to the group.

Probably a simple SQL Query - Newbie

I want to select entries from a table that has 2 columns where the first column value is contained within the 2 column....Does that make sense?
The first is a varchar that contains a value for a customer. The second is a varchar that contains a a textual description of a problem the customer has. My problem is that I only want to select the entries in the table where the second column contains a description that includes the first column value.
eg. I want to select rows that have the following condition:
column1 has value of "customer1"
column2 has a value of "an error was reported by customer1 on service blah"
but not these
column1 has value of "customer1"
column2 has a value of "an error was reported by customer2 on service blah"
This is probably a simple question but I've spent time looking at how to do it and can't seem to manage...any help would be appreciated....Thanks

I've never used the CONTAINS operator before. I compared the use in this situation to the other methods and found the others to be FAR less resource intensive, despite working on unindexed columns, as I demonstrate below.
It would seem that CONTAINS is unsuited to this type of simple query. Can you shed any light on this, from the perspective of somebody who has used it before? Is this type of performance penalty normal? If so, it could seem that CONTAINS is fairly useless next to LIKE.

Newbie question. coldFusion w/ Flex 2 tutorial

Hello.
I am very new to F2 and CF. Fairly proficient at Flash, DW,
css, html, etc. I have purchased and worked through a couple really
great F2 and CF books. I am able to construct some good basic stuff
with either. But am not really finding a tutorial or book that is
exclusively committed just to the subject of to using CF with Flex
2. There always seems to be a just a cursory mention, or a
brush-by, but not much more than that. I get it: if you got this
far, you probably arlready know everything about the two and
shouldn't need such.
If you could point me to a couple good references, I'd be
very appreciative. I'm looking for a good step-by-step, just on
this subject.

Immediately, I am just trying to create a simple method of
add/edit/delete records to tables from forms that I could access
remotely with Flex 2. I just assumed that CF would be the best
method, both being Macradobe products. If I am wrong about that, so
be it. Utlimately, I would like to print specific "quotes" relative
to specific customers and products to .pdf. This is for my own
personal use (as an insurance broker). Not commercial. Nor is
anyone paying me to develop this.
Maybe a better newbie question would be: what would be the
preferred method to add/edit/delete records, remotely, from a Flex
2 application for later printing to .pdf based on various selection
criteria? I have figured out how to do this on my own stand-alone
machine. Now I want to be able to do it remotely from anywhere.
I'm
not looking for instruction from anyone here, just direction
to your favorite learning tools so that I can dig in and learn.
I bought the books you recommended (adding to my own Library
of Congress).

Newbie question about loading servlets on tomcat

I have what is probably a very basic question about loading simple servlets on to tomcat to test its installation. I have followed instructions from numerous tutorials to the letter but still I can't get it to work.
I have installed tomcat on win2k in c:\tomcat. I set up the jdk, environment vars (JAVA_HOME, CATALINA_HOME, TOMCAT_HOME) which all point at the correct dirs. I can compile a servlet without errors. I can also place a test jsp and html file into the root directory and they both work fine.
However, now I am trying a test servlet and no matter what I do it gives me a 404. I have a servlet class file called "HelloServlet.class" which I placed into the %install_dir%\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes directory. I try to reference it using this url:
http://localhost/servlet/HelloServlet
Tomcat is configured to use port 80 and has been restarted after adding the servlet class file. Does anyone have a clue why this is not working for me?

You have to add in the web.xml file that it is in the WEB-INF dir, the information about your servlet. An example:
