(Probably) A stupid playback question:

I've recently (after purchasing a new PC) cleaned up my external HDs, and put my music collection onto iTunes, for use as a "media" player. I've had iTunes for many years, so, excuse me if this sounds remedial (I just cant figure it out):
Why can't I play an "unchecked" record (consecutive songs) without it "skipping" to a "checked" album? I have 1250 albums that arent going to fit on my iPod, but...I'd like to be able to play strictly on my PC.
Someone please tell me I'm just an idiot and that there is a way around this.

Spaceman, the answer is to use iTunes and your iPod as designed. You're asking "Why can't I stop my car with the steering wheel?" Unchecking songs was not meant to be the primary way to keep songs from going to your iPod. Creating playlists IS the way to manage what goes there and there are plenty of excellent built-in tools that will help you do this. It sounds like in unchecking songs you didn't want to go to the iPod, you've already chosen the manually manage your music method. So create a playlist and manually drag your iPod albums into it.
If there's a criteria that you can let iTunes do this for you automatically, create a smart playlist that will automatically grab the songs you're interested in. Personally, I created a smart playlist of songs that haven't played in six months. Songs that play rotate out and songs I haven't heard in a while automatically rotate in. Use your imagination!

  • Probably a stupid Newb question....chkconfig

    Hi all,
This is a very nice distro, especially if you wanted to learn linux, not just use it with a pretty GUI, and it has met ( sometimes exceeded ) my expectations.
The searching the forums, using google extensively, the wiki have made the experience most worthwhile.  The first distro was mandrake, which lasted about 1 month because I could not learn anything with it.  Anyway on to the question at hand.
What is the Arch linux equivalent of chkconfig?  Or does one have to download the package itself via pacman?
The reason I ask is that I would like to turn off all unneeded services ( I am a bit of a security hound, at least with a windows box ).   The Linux box will just be a workstation for myself, to do email, web surfing, maybe some online buying and eventually development.   No remote access to the machine is needed for myself ( as it is off, when I am not using it ).
Hopefully, I phrased the question correctly!
    Thanks,
    BobL

Thanks for the follow up Phrakture.   However, I did not quite follow when you said that chkconfig is a wrapper for make calls.   I thought it merely listed running services.   I did check on the make command and I cannot find how chkconfig even relates to what you mentioned.   Then again the article was mentioned in the context of a RedHat article.  So perhaps I am switching terms between different distrubutions....probably not a good idea.
I do know what "wrapping" is...with the programming background I have, I just didn't follow your context.
oh, crap - I mixed it up with checkinstall... my fault

  • Probably a stupid display question

I shoot with a canon xh-a1 edit with a mbp 15". What im wondering is if I wanted to edit on a bigger screen then my laptop and do some coloring, would it be stupid to think that using a lcd tv as a display would work? The reason I ask is I could go the apple display route for 1500 or I could take advantage of the extremely low tv prices get an 28" hdtv for 800? I know i'm missing something what would be wrong with going that way? Also I am not a professional and its not for broadcast just for dvd and maybe eventually blueray.

What you need is the Matrox MXO and Dell 2408 monitor (Apple Cinema Displays being discontinued). This gives you the option of both having a larger display for when you edit, and a color accurate monitor for viewing your footage and color correction..

  • Probably a Stupid Newbie Question, but....

Picked up a 8300 series Curve a couple of weeks ago.  Had it synched with my Outlook on my pc.  About a week ago the synch stopped working and I noticed that when the phone was plugged into the USB cord the little charger symbol would only stay lit up for about 7 seconds before disappearing.  On the Desktop Manager screen its says "Device Connected: (PIN): None"  Thinking it was perhaps a faulty USB cord (after unplugging and restarting it several times) I bought a new USB Cord, and now the charger symbol won't even light up and it remains "Device Connected: (PIN): None"
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?
    Thanks

First off, I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Desktop Manager.

  • Probably a stupid question

just got a macbook pro and want to be able to use the webcam to chat with my hubby on his PC when he is out of town on business. he does NOT have a webcam so we need to know what kind he can get that will allow us to talk and see each other. i know this is probably a stupid question but we are new at this.....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bevs
Any PC webcam that is compatible with your hubby's PC system, (Windows?) OS, and chat software will work. Best suggestions will come from the "Help" pages for his chat applications software.
For you to be able to video chat with your hubby, it is important that you choose applications software that offers "cross-platform" (Mac to PC) video chat capability. There are several choices available, but Skype probably currently offers the best balance between ease of use and reliability in free cross-platform video apps.
Whichever apps (and camera) you and hubby choose, everything must be compatible with your respective computers and operating systems. I mention this because your posted system info shows macbookpro   Mac OS X (10.0.x). Mac OS X (10.0.x) is now five major upgrades old. No MacBook Pros shipped with Mac OS X (10.0.x), so I expect that your system info just needs to be updated. However, if I am wrong, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS to use Skype, because Skype's System Requirements show you must use Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later. I do not know any video chat apps that work with Mac OS X (10.0.x).
In order to use Skype, both you and your hubby will need to download and install your respective versions of the Skype software. Skype offers free AV connections between computers (although its website seems to concentrate on its for-fee telephone connection service,) it is easy for most users to configure and set up, and it offers cross-platform audio with its video chat. (Not all video chat apps offer simultaneous audio.)
Your iSight will work with Skype, as will most PC webcams for your hubby. For more information now, or for help if you encounter problems using Skype later, Skype offers comprehensive support that includes a dedicated Skype Forum as well as technical support directly from Skype in addition to its online FAQ and Knowledge-base.
If you decide to go with Skype, your hubby can get Skype-specific suggestions for PC webcams here.
Please let us know if you need any other info before you can mark your question "Answered." We will be happy to try to offer more focused suggestions for your specific questions.

  • This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

Actually, another person on the "more like this" had the right answer. It meant I had a notification for an invite that I needed to respond to.
Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

  • Probably a stupid question, but how do I use an app on my Mac

Like the heading states ....probably a really dumb question.
Can I launch an app on my MacBook Pro.  No problems usings apps on my iPhone or iPad.  I just can figure out how to launch an app on my computer!
    Thanks,
    jns999

It will probably never change, at least not based on Apple's comments on the issue of iOS and OS X convergence to date, though of course none of us can say with any certainty.
    Regards.

  • Help with probably a stupid question...

I'm using CS3 and I'm applying a feathered edge to a photo using the refine edges command. The only thing I can't for the life of me figure out, is how to get the now white border to be transparent, so that when it's placed into my InDesign document (overlayed onto another photo) the underlaying photo isn't blocked by the white box. Sorry for the probably very basic use question, but any help would be appreciated...
    ~ Vince

Make the background layer a normal layer (rename it) and delete the white part that you want to be transparent.
Edit: You need to save it as a .PSD

  • Probably a stupid question about cropping a video..

OK, so I shot an interview with a black background and once I went to edit it, I noticed a red object in the far right corner. Is there a way I can add black over this object or crop it out? I know this is a stupid question, but I'm new to video and editing in general so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

There are several ways to accomplish what you want.
KGCW has talked about the Crop Effect.
Depending on exactly where the object is, and whether the camera was locked down, it might be possible to duplicate your Clip, place it above your initial Clip, then offset it a bit (Motion>Position), with the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position, and then apply the Garbage Matte to that offset duplicate, effectively Cropping out everything, but a small "patch" from the existing background. Note: if the edges of that Garbage Matte are too hard for you, you could create a soft-edged Track Matte, and use that to hold out the rest of the offset duplicate.
Another method, and depending on where, and how large the offending item is, would be to go to the Fixed Effect>Motion, and use Motion>Scale to increase the size of the Clip (do not do too much Scale, or quality will suffer). You might also need to do a bit of Motion>Position, to get that red object behind the Video's Frame Size. This will effectively Crop the object.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Probably a stupid question about upgrades...

I originally bought Adobe CS3 Web Premium and upgraded to CS5.5 Design Premium last year.  I'm wondering if I upgrade, will my price be based on the CS3 license or the CS5.5 upgrade...?
I'm guessing it will be based on CS5.5, but I want to make sure.
    -A. Ka

    There are no stupid questions!
Regardless of whether you got to CS5.5 via upgrading to it or by originally licensing CS5.5 is irrelevant in terms of the upgrade price to CS6 as well as the media you use for the upgrade.

  • Probably a stupid question revisited...

I asked yesterday about downloading the ipod update on a friends computer and then transferring it to mine because she has cable and I have dial up service.
Now I have another question. Is there any way I can just download the update on her computer and take my flash drive and put the update on my flash drive and take that home and put the file on my computer that way? My friend doesn't have an ipod so I really don't want to have to put itunes on her computer. All I want is to download the update file and that is it. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm not really computer savvy about these things.
    Thanks in advance.
      Windows XP

You can just download the iPod updater and update your iPod then just delete the program. You only need to install the updater not iTunes for you to download it.

  • Probably a stupid question- deleting music

I know there is probably a very simple answer to this question but I can't figure it out.
When trying to delete a song from my music library in iTunes I get a warning saying that the song will also be removed from any device that syncs with this itunes library. How do I delete from library (to free up computer space) but not have it deleted off iPhone when I sync.
    thanks

Make sure you have a backup on some sort of alternative/removable medium (CD/DVD, external hard drive, etc.) of any content you've purchased from the iTunes Store or that would otherwise be difficult to replace before you delete it from iTunes. Otherwise, should something require you to restore your iPhone, as is necessary on some occasions, you'll lose everything you only had on your iPhone.
    Regards.

  • Probably the mother of all stupid display questions...

I just bought a Gateway 22" widescreen for my PowerMac. Max resolution is 1680 by 1050 which is the default the Mac set it to (DVI connection btw). I was messing around playing UT2004 with this new display. My question is this...would the display or increase in the resolution somehow AFFECT actual gameplay? Specifically I noticed that once in a while, my character will stop moving forward, I have to let off on the key and press it down again to get my character moving again. I only noticed this AFTER upgrading my display, I used to have a Samsung 17" LCD display. BTW, my keyboard is a MIcrosoft Wireless Mac desktop. Like I said, didn't have problems until the display was upgraded. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
Cliff Notes: upgraded display to 22" Widescreen, Graphics cart is a Radeon X800 XT, try to play UT2004, character stops moving forward intermittently. Didn't have problem before...any relation? Thanks.

There should only be issues if you have also increased the resolution in the game itself (because the graphics chip has to work harder). Are you able to check (or lower) the resolution within the game?

  • Probably a stupid question, but humor me.

My MacBook Pro is currently on its way here, and odd little questions keep popping into my head. The latest of which being: Should I worry about the MagSafe magnets messing with my Nano? When using my iBook, I tend to keep my iPod on the left side of the computer and...well, I should think that Apple would have enough foresight to make sure it wouldn't do anything to iPods, but I'd just like to be sure. Anyone?

Ok, so about your iPod nano: in the user's guide of the MBP, it warns users to keep their iPods away from the magsafe magnets for the reason that magnetic media (i.e. credit cards and larger iPods) can be erased or damaged by magnets. As for your iPod nano, I'm pretty sure that the nano and shuffle run off of flash memory instead of an internal hard drive like the larger iPods and flash memory can't be damaged by magnetism. Besides this, (yours is after all a nano and not a shuffle) you will not be plugging your iPod directly into the USB port right beside the MagSafe outlet - there will be the cord distancing it from it and also, the MagSafe's magnetic field is only about a half an inch from the magnet. Hope hope this answers your question.
