Probably a stupid question but here goes....

Hello all,
Interested in Airport Time Capsule for backing up my iMac and MacBook and MacBook Pro. Can this product replace the current wireless router? As in I currently have an orange livebox for my broadband and can I get rid of this and use this as my dial up box?
Thanks!

The Airport Time Capsule does function as a wireless router.
However, the Airport Time Capsule does NOT have a built in DSL modem.
Your Orange Livebox does have a built in DSL modem.
Therefore - no - you cannot replace your Orange Livebox with an Airport Time Capsule. What you can do is cable the Airport Time Capsule to the ethernet port on your Orange LiveBox.

Actually, another person on the "more like this" had the right answer. It meant I had a notification for an invite that I needed to respond to.
Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

  • Probably a stupid question, but humor me.

My MacBook Pro is currently on its way here, and odd little questions keep popping into my head. The latest of which being: Should I worry about the MagSafe magnets messing with my Nano? When using my iBook, I tend to keep my iPod on the left side of the computer and...well, I should think that Apple would have enough foresight to make sure it wouldn't do anything to iPods, but I'd just like to be sure. Anyone?

Ok, so about your iPod nano: in the user's guide of the MBP, it warns users to keep their iPods away from the magsafe magnets for the reason that magnetic media (i.e. credit cards and larger iPods) can be erased or damaged by magnets. As for your iPod nano, I'm pretty sure that the nano and shuffle run off of flash memory instead of an internal hard drive like the larger iPods and flash memory can't be damaged by magnetism. Besides this, (yours is after all a nano and not a shuffle) you will not be plugging your iPod directly into the USB port right beside the MagSafe outlet - there will be the cord distancing it from it and also, the MagSafe's magnetic field is only about a half an inch from the magnet. Hope hope this answers your question.

  • Probably a stupid question, but how do I use an app on my Mac

Like the heading states ....probably a really dumb question.
Can I launch an app on my MacBook Pro.  No problems usings apps on my iPhone or iPad.  I just can figure out how to launch an app on my computer!
    Thanks,

It will probably never change, at least not based on Apple's comments on the issue of iOS and OS X convergence to date, though of course none of us can say with any certainty.
    Regards.

  • Probably a stupid question but ....

I applied 10.6.5 from Software Update. All seems fine.
It seems many prefer to apply the combo update.
Is there any reason for me to reapply 10.6.5 from the combo package?

Not unless you think something might be amiss. Some people prefer it to doing incrementals or do it as a prophylactic. The standalone updater contains stuff to bring the previous version (e.g., 10.6.4) up-to-date with the next version (10/6/5). The COMBO update includes everything to bring the original (10.6.0) to 10.6.5. It doesn't hurt anything, but does take some time. Your choice. In either case, ensure that your run the Software Update and repair permissions, afterwards.

  • Probably a stupid question but how do I designate a default location where documents are stored?

Ideally, I'd like the default to be the last location I saved a file.  I hate starting at the top of the file structure every time!

I went from Album 2 on XP (Organizer was Album before it was bundled with PSE Editor starting with v3) to PSE5 on Vista.  All of my photos were on an external drive so it was quite simple.
I copied the catalogs folder onto the harddrive of my Vista machine.  Plugged in the ehd.  Installed PSE5 and from within PSE5 opened the old Album 2 catalog which automatically converted it to a PSE5 catalog (and saved a copy of the old original catalog file).  The only problem I recall is that my categories lost their icons (except for the defaults) and those needed to be reassigned.
The reason I did not use the backup and replace method was that the XP machine was overheating and all I wanted to risk was making a copy of the catalog folder before sending it to the shop.  (I always intend to have current backups but rarely actually do.)
Having my photos on the ehd eliminated the path problem.  Since yours are in your My Photos folder this isn't the solution for you unless you were planning to move the photos to an ehd anyway.

  • Not sure if I have already posted this question, but here goes.. Wondering why photos taken with my IPhone 5c no longer show up on my IPAD .. Still coming across on IMac .. Settings on IPAD seem to be set correctly .. Any help will be appreciated .. Thank

on all the devices involved, settings, photos and camera - make sure photo stream is on, and make sure you are on the same cloud account, with photos in the clound settings on.  you might want to toggle those setting off then back on, in a attempt to reset the condition.

  • Probably a stupid question, but I don't know the answer to updating Mail.

I'm running Mail Version 2.0 (727/752.2). I see others who are running v. 2.2. Are there any differences?
My software update says I'm running the latest software. What's up with this?

The latest version of Mail for a PPC Mac is 2.1 and 2.2 is for an Intel Mac.
I suggest downloading the appropriate 10.4.8 Combo Update for your Mac (PPC or Intel) and re-installing 10.4.8.

  • HT204053 Naive question I know but here goes. One apple ID, multiple apple IOS devices (touch/pad/phone). Books purchased via Kindle sync to ALL devices via iCloud. How can I stop this? I want to separate each of the family's reading prefernces from the d

    Naive question but here goes.
As a family we have one Apple ID. All devices are synced via my PC and backed up to it rather than to iCloud.
Books purchased via Kindle App appear on all the devices within the "cloud" option. How do I separate each reader's prefernce to their own device? I want to make sure that the younger one's dont have access to anything unsuitable.
    Thanks.

You can have one AppleID for your purchases so that all teh devices can use all the apps without having to buy them again, and at the same time, have different iCloud accounts for each user so that their content is not intermingled with everyone else's.  You can even go so far as to have your iCloud Account enabled for "Find my iPhone" for each of the other devices allowing you to keep track of where tehy are when they get misplaced.
If you need/want, you can share iCloud Calendars between different iCloud accounts as well.  This is exactly what my wife & I have done.  We share calendars so I know when she has classes or dog competitions, and she can see my work schedule so she knows what nights I have to be in late, etc.

  • Probably a stupid question

just got a macbook pro and want to be able to use the webcam to chat with my hubby on his PC when he is out of town on business. he does NOT have a webcam so we need to know what kind he can get that will allow us to talk and see each other. i know this is probably a stupid question but we are new at this.....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bevs
Any PC webcam that is compatible with your hubby's PC system, (Windows?) OS, and chat software will work. Best suggestions will come from the "Help" pages for his chat applications software.
For you to be able to video chat with your hubby, it is important that you choose applications software that offers "cross-platform" (Mac to PC) video chat capability. There are several choices available, but Skype probably currently offers the best balance between ease of use and reliability in free cross-platform video apps.
Whichever apps (and camera) you and hubby choose, everything must be compatible with your respective computers and operating systems. I mention this because your posted system info shows macbookpro   Mac OS X (10.0.x). Mac OS X (10.0.x) is now five major upgrades old. No MacBook Pros shipped with Mac OS X (10.0.x), so I expect that your system info just needs to be updated. However, if I am wrong, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS to use Skype, because Skype's System Requirements show you must use Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later. I do not know any video chat apps that work with Mac OS X (10.0.x).
In order to use Skype, both you and your hubby will need to download and install your respective versions of the Skype software. Skype offers free AV connections between computers (although its website seems to concentrate on its for-fee telephone connection service,) it is easy for most users to configure and set up, and it offers cross-platform audio with its video chat. (Not all video chat apps offer simultaneous audio.)
Your iSight will work with Skype, as will most PC webcams for your hubby. For more information now, or for help if you encounter problems using Skype later, Skype offers comprehensive support that includes a dedicated Skype Forum as well as technical support directly from Skype in addition to its online FAQ and Knowledge-base.
If you decide to go with Skype, your hubby can get Skype-specific suggestions for PC webcams here.
Please let us know if you need any other info before you can mark your question "Answered." We will be happy to try to offer more focused suggestions for your specific questions.

  • Stupid Question, but.......

I run TM on three Macs (two iMacs and a MacBook Pro). I really do not know much about TM other than once set-up it runs pretty much on its own backing up the computers. Does it back everything up including iTunes? I know that this is probably a stupid question but if it does back up iTunes, is there a need to separately back up iTunes to DVDs/CDs or another external drive?
    Thanks!

    thebark4 wrote:

Definitely NOT a stupid question. And the answer is . . . it depends on how much risk you want to take. As great as locally-attached external drives and Time Capsules are, they may not protect you from fire, flood, theft, or direct lightning strike on your power lines. So if your music (or other data) is really important to you, and difficult, expensive, or impossible to replace, then yes, you need an off-site backup in addition to TM.
There are many ways to do this. Some folks alternate between a pair of portable externals with Time Machine, keeping one attached for a week or so, then swapping with the other in their safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc. (You do have to tell TM when you do this, and shouldn't go much longer than 7 days between swaps.)
Others copy their data to DVD/RW(s) periodically, and take them off-site.
Still others use a different app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to copy just their iTunes folder, and/or iMovie folder, etc., to a smaller portable external and take that off-site.
Still others, if their data isn't too large, store a copy online, either via a MobileMe subscription on their iDisk, or with a 3rd-party service like Mozy.
And there is an option within iTunes to do incremental backups to CDs/DVDs. I haven't used it, but it's been recommended here.
This may seem a bit like wearing a belt plus suspenders, but backups are one area where many of us have learned, often the hard way, that +Paranoia is Prudent!+

  • Using the Assets panel [was: The most basic stupid question on here]

I am very new to web design, self taught on sites like GoDaddy and Microsoft Office Live, but there's no access to root directory and adding affiliate banners won't work. So here I am. Problem #1 so far is how do I get stuff into my assets. I've messed around for a while w/ no success. It can't be that hard. Someone out there please give this "newbie" the instructions for getting text, images and stuff from my computer into the assets box on Dreamweaver. I'll have nightmares about "dreamweaver" till I get this figured out.  Thanks a million in advance for answering such a basic (almost stupid) question

There are no stupid questions around here, but a more descriptive subject heading would be appreciated in the future.  "Assets Question"

  • Stupid Question but need help

    Hey Guys
This is going to sound like a stupid question, but ive been wrecking my head now for about 2 hours on it, and cant find any help on the net.
Im looking to create an image to add to a j2me application. And basically it cant find the image.
The image is in my c:\images folder and its called pike.jpg, when i use the following the code it does not find the image
    image = Image.createImage("C:/images/pike.jpg");
    image = Image.createImage("C/images/pike.jpg");
    image = Image.createImage("C:/\images/pike.jpg");
image = Image.createImage("C:\\images/pike.jpg");Yet when i place it in my working directory and use
image = Image.createImage("/pike.jpg");It works fine, basically how do i point to the directory c:\images\pike.jpg in java
    Thanks

Thanks. Now that is clarified, I can see from the documentation:
The name parameter is a resource name as defined by Class.getResourceAsStream(name) . The rules for resolving resource names are defined in the Application Resource Files section of the java.lang package documentation.
So it's not a file name. The string you pass must be findable via the classpath.
So, if C:\images is included in your classpath (which you'll need to do for this example), then just use "/pike.jpg" and have that file live in the images directory only.
