Probably a stupid question- deleting music

I know there is probably a very simple answer to this question but I can't figure it out.
When trying to delete a song from my music library in iTunes I get a warning saying that the song will also be removed from any device that syncs with this itunes library. How do I delete from library (to free up computer space) but not have it deleted off iPhone when I sync.
thanks

Make sure you have a backup on some sort of alternative/removable medium (CD/DVD, external hard drive, etc.) of any content you've purchased from the iTunes Store or that would otherwise be difficult to replace before you delete it from iTunes. Otherwise, should something require you to restore your iPhone, as is necessary on some occasions, you'll lose everything you only had on your iPhone.
Regards.

  • Probably a stupid question

just got a macbook pro and want to be able to use the webcam to chat with my hubby on his PC when he is out of town on business. he does NOT have a webcam so we need to know what kind he can get that will allow us to talk and see each other. i know this is probably a stupid question but we are new at this.....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bevs
Any PC webcam that is compatible with your hubby's PC system, (Windows?) OS, and chat software will work. Best suggestions will come from the "Help" pages for his chat applications software.
For you to be able to video chat with your hubby, it is important that you choose applications software that offers "cross-platform" (Mac to PC) video chat capability. There are several choices available, but Skype probably currently offers the best balance between ease of use and reliability in free cross-platform video apps.
Whichever apps (and camera) you and hubby choose, everything must be compatible with your respective computers and operating systems. I mention this because your posted system info shows macbookpro   Mac OS X (10.0.x). Mac OS X (10.0.x) is now five major upgrades old. No MacBook Pros shipped with Mac OS X (10.0.x), so I expect that your system info just needs to be updated. However, if I am wrong, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS to use Skype, because Skype's System Requirements show you must use Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later. I do not know any video chat apps that work with Mac OS X (10.0.x).
In order to use Skype, both you and your hubby will need to download and install your respective versions of the Skype software. Skype offers free AV connections between computers (although its website seems to concentrate on its for-fee telephone connection service,) it is easy for most users to configure and set up, and it offers cross-platform audio with its video chat. (Not all video chat apps offer simultaneous audio.)
Your iSight will work with Skype, as will most PC webcams for your hubby. For more information now, or for help if you encounter problems using Skype later, Skype offers comprehensive support that includes a dedicated Skype Forum as well as technical support directly from Skype in addition to its online FAQ and Knowledge-base.
If you decide to go with Skype, your hubby can get Skype-specific suggestions for PC webcams here.
Please let us know if you need any other info before you can mark your question "Answered." We will be happy to try to offer more focused suggestions for your specific questions.

  • This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

Actually, another person on the "more like this" had the right answer. It meant I had a notification for an invite that I needed to respond to.
Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

  • Probably a stupid question about cropping a video..

OK, so I shot an interview with a black background and once I went to edit it, I noticed a red object in the far right corner. Is there a way I can add black over this object or crop it out? I know this is a stupid question, but I'm new to video and editing in general so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

There are several ways to accomplish what you want.
KGCW has talked about the Crop Effect.
Depending on exactly where the object is, and whether the camera was locked down, it might be possible to duplicate your Clip, place it above your initial Clip, then offset it a bit (Motion>Position), with the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position, and then apply the Garbage Matte to that offset duplicate, effectively Cropping out everything, but a small "patch" from the existing background. Note: if the edges of that Garbage Matte are too hard for you, you could create a soft-edged Track Matte, and use that to hold out the rest of the offset duplicate.
Another method, and depending on where, and how large the offending item is, would be to go to the Fixed Effect>Motion, and use Motion>Scale to increase the size of the Clip (do not do too much Scale, or quality will suffer). You might also need to do a bit of Motion>Position, to get that red object behind the Video's Frame Size. This will effectively Crop the object.
    Good luck,

  • Probably a stupid question about upgrades...

I originally bought Adobe CS3 Web Premium and upgraded to CS5.5 Design Premium last year.  I'm wondering if I upgrade, will my price be based on the CS3 license or the CS5.5 upgrade...?
I'm guessing it will be based on CS5.5, but I want to make sure.
    -A. Ka

    There are no stupid questions!
Regardless of whether you got to CS5.5 via upgrading to it or by originally licensing CS5.5 is irrelevant in terms of the upgrade price to CS6 as well as the media you use for the upgrade.

  • Probably a stupid question revisited...

I asked yesterday about downloading the ipod update on a friends computer and then transferring it to mine because she has cable and I have dial up service.
Now I have another question. Is there any way I can just download the update on her computer and take my flash drive and put the update on my flash drive and take that home and put the file on my computer that way? My friend doesn't have an ipod so I really don't want to have to put itunes on her computer. All I want is to download the update file and that is it. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm not really computer savvy about these things.
    Thanks in advance.
      Windows XP

You can just download the iPod updater and update your iPod then just delete the program. You only need to install the updater not iTunes for you to download it.

  • Help with probably a stupid question...

I'm using CS3 and I'm applying a feathered edge to a photo using the refine edges command. The only thing I can't for the life of me figure out, is how to get the now white border to be transparent, so that when it's placed into my InDesign document (overlayed onto another photo) the underlaying photo isn't blocked by the white box. Sorry for the probably very basic use question, but any help would be appreciated...
    ~ Vince

Make the background layer a normal layer (rename it) and delete the white part that you want to be transparent.
Edit: You need to save it as a .PSD

  • Probably a stupid question, but how do I use an app on my Mac

Like the heading states ....probably a really dumb question.
Can I launch an app on my MacBook Pro.  No problems usings apps on my iPhone or iPad.  I just can figure out how to launch an app on my computer!
    Thanks,
    jns999

It will probably never change, at least not based on Apple's comments on the issue of iOS and OS X convergence to date, though of course none of us can say with any certainty.
    Regards.

  • Probably a stupid question, but humor me.

My MacBook Pro is currently on its way here, and odd little questions keep popping into my head. The latest of which being: Should I worry about the MagSafe magnets messing with my Nano? When using my iBook, I tend to keep my iPod on the left side of the computer and...well, I should think that Apple would have enough foresight to make sure it wouldn't do anything to iPods, but I'd just like to be sure. Anyone?

Ok, so about your iPod nano: in the user's guide of the MBP, it warns users to keep their iPods away from the magsafe magnets for the reason that magnetic media (i.e. credit cards and larger iPods) can be erased or damaged by magnets. As for your iPod nano, I'm pretty sure that the nano and shuffle run off of flash memory instead of an internal hard drive like the larger iPods and flash memory can't be damaged by magnetism. Besides this, (yours is after all a nano and not a shuffle) you will not be plugging your iPod directly into the USB port right beside the MagSafe outlet - there will be the cord distancing it from it and also, the MagSafe's magnetic field is only about a half an inch from the magnet. Hope hope this answers your question.

  • Probably a stupid question - what does '256' mean in response to a command

    Hi,
I.m just learning PHP (I mean at the very beginning). The tutorial I'm following was running through how to start and stop the apache server via terminal.
When I entered the commands, I received the following error"
/usr/sbin/apachectl: line 82: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument
    So I poked around and found out that I needed to modify the apachectl script to remove "ulimit -S -n `ulimit -H -n`" from the line ULIMITMAXFILES="ulimit -S -n `ulimit -H -n`"
So created a backup, opened nano and modifed the script. So far so good. So I went to try the command again and....
    sudo apachectl graceful
    256
Can someone please enlighten this poor beginner as to what I've done?
    Many thanks

Can someone please enlighten this poor beginner as to what I've done?
Sure. You edited the file incorrectly (or, at least, pointlessly )
    modify the apachectl script to remove "ulimit -S -n `ulimit -H -n`" from the line ULIMITMAXFILES="ulimit -S -n `ulimit -H -n`"
    Well, sorta, kinda.
To understand what is happening now it's useful to understand what the original command did.
    ULIMITMAXFILES="ulimit -S -n `ulimit -H -n`"
    This command has three components:
    ULIMITMAXFILES=
    "ulimit -S -n "
    and
    `ulimit -H -n`
Note that the last component is surrounded by back ticks. This indicates that it's a subcommand that should be executed and the result of which inserted in its place.
So in effect, this line tells the shell to first go away and run `limit -H -n`.
This command determines the maximum limits available for a process and would normally return the string 'unlimited'.
This has the effect of turning the full line into:
    ULIMITMAXFILES="ulimit -S -n unlimited"
(since the subcommand has been executed and its result inserted in the command).
So now the shell can run the command 'ulimit -S -n unlimited', the result of which is stuffed into ULIMITMAXFILES
Your mistake is that you simply omitted the subcommand that determines the maximum process limit on this system so now the command looks like:
    ULIMITMAXFILES="ulimit -S -n"
which simply determines the current process limit (which is normally 256).
In other words, since you nixed the last parameter to the command you're now just asking it for the current limits (256) rather than setting a new limit value.
That's why you get '256' - it's what you asked for.
As for what to do about it? Well, nothing would be one option - it shouldn't prevent apache from running, you just get additional output when you run apachectl. If it bothers you, delete (or comment out) the entire line rather than just the subcommand. Unless I'm mistaken it's not going to make and significant difference to Apache's operation either way.

  • Probably a stupid question... so sorry in advance!

I'm planning to buy Photoshop CS3. If I decide to fork out for a Power Mac later in the year, how easy is it to move my Photoshop application from my old G5 to the new PowerMac? Will the licence still be valid? The may be obvious but I've never change computers before so sorry.
    Same question for Aperture 2.

Photoshop CS3 asks you to activate via internet, you can do this in up to two machines. Make sure to deactivate the software in your old machine before replacing it with the new one, or you'll have one of two activations lost.
Aperture doesn't use this kind of protection so no worries here.

  • Probably a stupid question . . . does the iPad come with iTunes preinstalled?

I'm in need ot a portable way to listen to podcasts and type some notes. Due to low vision I cannot use an ipod or iphone.  I have an imac at home.  Does the ipad come with itunes preinstalled, or would I haave to buy it separately.  I know I'd have to purchase another copy if pages, which I have on my imac.

Yes - but the iTunes that comes installed on the iPad is the iTunes Store where you purchase your media. The iPad comes with a preinstalled iPod App and that is where your music library resides and plays on the iPad - not in iTunes.
You don't have to buy either apps for the iPad.

  • Probably a stupid question, buuut

i recently got a new laptop so I downloaded itunes for it, and authorized the computer and clicked on transfer purchases to put it all in my library or w/e. problem..all the songs didn't transfer...like songs I've imported from my CDs and such. I always put my music isn't the purchased playlist, even if i got it off a CD or something...so I figured all the songs would transfer...but no such luck.
please tell me I'm just incompetent and there's a way to get all my songs in my library??

The transfer purchased music function is ONLY for your purchases from the store, it doesn't apply to the files ripped from your own CD's. The following link will tell you how to use your iPod to move to a new computer. There are several 3rd party apps that can do this for you, including iPodAgent for Windows, yamipod, & transpod.

  • Left arrow key -- probably a stupid question.

In some applications my left arrow key doesn't work. I've noticed it most in Word for mac, but I know it has happened elsewere, too. And in safari the left arrow key tabs often functions like tab. I'm new to Mac (and just getting used to fn + delete to delete forward). Is this another key combination thing I'm missing? I've discovered using Word that fn + <-- is "home," and that works just fine.
    Thanks!

I have this exact same problem. Has anyone found a fix. I called Apple Care and they said it was not a hardware problem, as this left arrow key problem only happens in Word. They also could not find a fix to the problem and, of course, referred me to Microsoft. I had already spoken with Microsoft and they, of course, referred me to Apple. I am desperately trying to a fix, as I use Word to write upwards of 100 page reports and not being able to use the left arrow key is a nightmare.
    Please someone help.
    Nancy
