Probably stupid Referenced Files Question

Hi,
I just copied my 120 gigs of referenced files onto a larger hard drive. What do I need to do to have Aperture be able to find them? I did a bit of fiddling around but am a little afraid to proceed without advice.
Many Thanks!
Lisa

Many Thanks Paul,
I am still having a problem though. I did as you said and the reconnect options are greyed out. My set up is that I have 2 lacie drives daisy chained to my laptop. Both drives are visible in the referenced files dialog box. I still have all the referenced files on my 120GB drive and also have the same files copied over to the 320GB drive. I tried selecting as you said....the file appears in the bottom dialog box but only as an icon whereas I get a thumbnail in the top. And the option to reconnect or reconnect all is greyed out.
If you have any ideas what I'm doing wrong I'd be very grateful!
Thanks! Lisa

  • Locate Referenced Files question...

    Could someone help me sort this one out?
    I have a total of 8407 images currently in Aperture (all referenced).
    After I select all the images and then open Locate Refenced Files... it shows me that all iamges are online and there is a 0 under "Not Found" column. Sounds OK, but the problem is in this window it tells me that I only have 8396 images. All in the correct place.
    How is it that I have a difference of 11 images? What do I look for or how do I solve this discrepancy?
    Thank you,
    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,
    Images are never "referenced".  Every Image has an Original.  Each Original is either Managed or Referenced.  Images may share an Original (for instance, multiple Versions from the same Original).
    How did you come up with 8407?
    How did you "select all the images"?
    Have you checked for rejected Images?
    Have you allowed for some Originals to be assigned to more than one Image?

  • (Probably) Stupid Copy/Paste Question

    Hello, and thank you in advance for your help. This is my first day on the PowerBook Pro. I was previously on a PowerBook G3.
    I'm having strange issue: Copying and pasting works fine...exept when copying and pasting from a website onto an HTML editor (like Composer or NVU).
    It's very strange. It worked fine on my PowerBook, but now when I go to paste nothing happens. I've tried to find some setting that may have changed but haven't found anything. I'm completely stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    It doesn't seem to matter what the site is. I've tried copying from different sites onto different HTML editors. I copy (via command C, or edit copy, or control click) and try to paste it into Composer nothing happens. If I paste it onto any regular text editor (MS Word, Stickies, etc) it pastes without a problem. For some reason I'm only having the problem when I paste into an HTML editor.
    Very strange, no?? Perhaps there's an issue with copying something formatted? I created a hyperlink in Word and tried to copy/paste it into Composer and wasn't able to do it. Is there a setting for copying formatted text that needs to be turned on or something?
    Thanks again for any help you could give!

  • Question about how javac finds referenced files.

    Hi
    I am just beginning to learn Java and have got some questions related to packages.
    I have two classes:
    MyClass.java
    package pkg;
    public class MyClass {
         public void prn(int x){
         System.out.println("Integer: "+x);
    Test.java
    import pkg.*;
    public class Test{
         public static void main(String[] args){
              MyClass obj=new MyClass();
              obj.prn(2);
    Directory structure
    /root/ jprog/MyClass.java
    /root/ jprog/Test.java
    Executing the following sequence of commands gives me:
    # ls
    MyClass.java Test.java
    # javac -d . MyClass.java
    # ls
    MyClass.java Test.java pkg/
    # cd pkg
    # ls
    MyClass.class -----compiles.
    # cd ..
    # javac Test.java
    Test.java:5: cannot access MyClass
    bad class file: ./MyClass.java
    file does not contain class MyClass
    Please remove or make sure it appears in the correct subdirectory of the classpath.
    MyClass obj=new MyClass();
    ^
    1 error
    Now after reading another thread on this forum I came to know that the compiler finds the
    MyClass.java in the wrong package. Using verbose option with javac shows this.
    So I move it to some other directory and everything works.
    # mv MyClass.java /root
    # ls
    Test.java pkg/
    # javac Test.java
    # java Test
    Integer: 2
    Now the question begins:
    Suppose we go back to how the files were arranged before I moved the MyClass.java file and
    I change the Test.java file by adding
    package pkg2;
    statement to it.
    Now everything compiles
    # ls
    MyClass.java Test.java ---I have deleted pkg and .class files
    # cat Test.java
    package pkg2;
    import pkg.*;
    public class Test{
    public static void main(String[] args){
    MyClass obj=new MyClass();
    obj.prn(2);
    # cat MyClass.java
    package pkg;
    public class MyClass {
    public void prn(int x){
    System.out.println("Integer: "+x);
    # javac -d . MyClass.java
    # javac -d . Test.java
    # ls
    MyClass.java Test.java pkg/ pkg2/
    # java pkg2.Test
    Integer: 2
    Why isn't the MyClass.java file causing any problems now?
    Using the verbose option with javac shows that the compiler goes straight for the pkg/MyClass.class.
    My readings of Core Java Horstmann tell me that the compiler always looks in the current directory. javac documentation also doesn't help. I know that the documentation recommends that the source file locations should match the package statements.
    I'm just trying to learn how javac finds referenced files.
    Any help??
    Thanks a load in advance.

    I know that the
    documentation recommends that the source file
    locations should match the package statements.This is not merely a recommendation, it is a requirement.
    Both javac and java find classes by traversing the classpath. The classpath should contain directories (or jar files) that correspond to the top of a (part of the) package hierarchy.
    For example, if the Java code for your class is in a file C:\src\pkg\MyClass.java, and MyClass.java declares the class to be in package pkg, the classpath should contain C:\src. Classes are then found by transforming their package declaration into a directory structure.
    Please note that javac works on files, not classes. Therefore it is necessary to specify the full filenames of the files you want to compile, even if you have specified the classpath. By default, javac will put compiled class files in the same location as their sources, so the classpath for the java command should also contain C:\src.
    The exception to the rule is when all classes for the program are in the default package (i.e., they do NOT contain a package statement). In that case, it is possible for javac (and I believe java as well) to find all classes in the current directory, so it will "just work".
    You can specify the classpath using the -cp parameter to both javac and java.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I know if the image is a master or a referenced file?

    I imported images into Aperture, and am now not sure whether to delete the originals (that were already on my hard drive in a photos folder).
    How can I tell, after having imported them, whether the images in Aperture are referenced or master?
    I'm just scared of deleting the original folder (the outside aperture one!)
    Thanks!
    Hannah

    Not really...
    That merely shows you the master image with no adjustments applied - I think the question was how to tell the difference between masters that are referenced vs. managed - the answer to that question is that you can either use one of the functions under the file menu to consolidate the images into the library as managed masters (not available if images in the current selection are already managed) or use manage referenced files to take a look at the location on disk (not available for managed masters).
    The other thing that you can do is do a search based on file status (add a search element to the search HUD)
    more info here;

    There are probably some useful info regarding searching near the end of the article.

  • Managed or Referenced files?

    I'm using Aperture 1.5.6 for a year and although pretty familiar I still have a few questions about managed vs referenced files and they are:
    1) Are all Aperture features available to both managed & referenced files. i.e., metadata, keywords etc. etc.?
    2) If I choose to change referenced files to managed from my hard drives into the Aperture Library are those files duplicated or now only in the Aperture library?
    Thanks

    Despite this quote from page 140 of the User Manual,
    "Choose whether you want the image files moved or copied to a new location by clicking the 'Move files' or 'Copy files' button".
    If you choose to store them in their current location, they are neither moved nor copied.
    If you choose to have them stored in the Aperture Library or elsewhere they are copied.
    This is probably a good thing because, no matter what you do, it keeps your iPhoto Library intact.

  • SWF File question...PLEASE HELP

    I've been asked to edit a Flash web site. The page they want
    me to edit has a form on it, but they only have the .swf file. I've
    opened it in Flash and am able to make the required changes, but
    they thing I wanted to know is will the form be affected if I then
    re export it as a .swf file or will it still work as it did before?
    Thanks for your help,
    Lucy

    Lucy4,
    > The HTML file is for a seperate form on the site.
    Okay. Sometimes people provide two versions ... a "jazzy"
    Flash version
    and a "plain vanilla" HTML version. If that form is a
    different one
    altogether, then the variables required by form-mail.pl might
    have nothing
    to do with the variables required by the script to which your
    SWF must
    submit. Until we know how form-mail.pl works, we simply don't
    know what to
    send to it.
    It *might* be the case that form-mail.pl was written to
    receive *any*
    variables. You won't know until you try. Send whatever
    variables you like
    and see what comes out at the other end (whoever it is that
    receives the
    email sent by the Perl script).
    Then again, it might be the case that form-mail.pl requires
    a certain
    set of variables. If those variables are different from the
    ones you showed
    me in that HTML form, you'll have to find out what those
    variables are.
    That only makes sense, right?
    > So does that mean then that I don't need to add any
    > additional code to the HTML page that the Flash
    > form will be on?
    An HTML page *could* have both an HTML form and a Flash
    form, by why
    would a developer do that? It would confuse people ... you
    can already hear
    them asking, "Which form should I fill out?" When a developer
    produces two
    versions, they're both completely separate. Some developers
    like to provide
    site visitors with a Flash version of the site and a
    non-Flash version of
    the site -- but they're never provided side-by-side on the
    same HTML page.
    Your Flash form has nothing to do with existing HTML on the
    page --
    other than the <object> and <embed> tags
    necessary to embed the SWF in the
    document. There shouldn't be a form on the SWF's HTML page at
    all.
    > Also I've added the following code to the submit button
    > on the Flash file, but am not sure if it will work okay:
    >
    > on (release) {
    > if (!realname.length) {
    > EmailStatus = "Please Enter your name before Sending";
    > }
    This code might work and it might not. Without know what
    it's supposed
    to do, I can't answer the question.
    First, you're checking of an
    object, realname, has a length property greater than zero.
    The way this is
    written, you're coincidentally checking of the realname
    object has a length
    property at all. My question to you is, what sort of object
    is realname?
    Is it a String? Is it an Array?
    My guess is that it's a String (after all the String class
    does define a
    String.length property), but if so, where is this string
    coming from? Does
    realname represent an input text field somewhere in your SWF?
    If so, you
    should probably be referencing that text field's
    TextField.text property.
    In other words, you presumably have an input text field in
    your movie, and
    that text field's instance name is realname. Since realname
    is an instance
    of the TextField class, you'll use the TextField.text
    property to retrieve
    the text inside that text field. And since TextField.text
    returns a string,
    you can use the expression realname.text in place of your
    string in the
    expression myString.length. Combined, that would be ...
    if (realname.text.length == 0)
    ... or ...
    if (!realname.text.length)
    Does that make sense to you? If it doesn't, that's fine, but
    it means
    you need to familiarize yourself with what it means to use
    objects in
    ActionScript.
    The next part ...
    EmailStatus = "Please Enter your name before Sending";
    ... might mean something, too. But I have no idea what
    EmailStatus is. Is
    that a variable you'll be using later? There is no
    EmailStatus entry in the
    ActionScript Language Reference, so this must be something
    you've defined or
    written somewhere. Without that description from you, I have
    no way of
    telling you what EmailStatus is for -- or, for example, if it
    can be set to
    a String, as you've done here.
    > loadVariablesNum ("snowMailPHP.php", "0", "Post");
    > EmailStatus = "Sending...";
    Now, this part may be fine. I don't know what
    snowMail.PHP.php is.
    Presumably, it's a form handler. If so, it's either a form
    handler that can
    handle exactly the variables you'll be sending or any
    variables at all.
    Your second parameter, "0", is incorrect. That needs to be a
    Number, not a
    String (see the loadVariablesNum entry of the ActionScript
    Language
    Reference for details).

  • CC Illustrator asking for referenced files upon opening (DropBox)

    I locate my CC Illustrator file on DropBox.  All of the files it references are also on DropBox.   I work exclusively on the Illustrator file on DropBox (I never download it to my computer and work on it).  I do this so that my wife can also open this Illustator file (on DropBox) from her computer and work on it - again with all of the referenced files located on DropBox.  She never downloads the file to her computer.  I just want to be clear about that. : )
    PROBLEM:
    1) I work on Illustator file on my computer then close it.  My wife opens it on her computer.  Illustator shows dialog box "Can't find _____.png file"   Do you want to Replace, Ignore or Cancel.
    So we "reconnect" by hitting "Replace" finding the file on DropBox that my computer always referenced.   The Illustator file opens, everything is in its place.
    2) My wife makes no changes to the file.  tries to "Close" the file and it asks her to "Save As".
    QUESTIONS:
    1)  Why does my wife have to locate reference files when all of the work is done on DropBox and all of the refence file are located on DropBox?
    2) Why does she have to "Save As" and replace the main file (located and opened on DropBox) when she has made no changes to the file?
    If it helps any, you should know we share the exact same DropBox account (not just a shared folder) which is set up on her computer and on my computer.

    The only thing I can think of why centralizing the folder on DropBox isn't working is that the pictures being referenced when on my computer are probably listed in Illustrator as:
    DropBox/mycomputer/Macintosh HD/Users...etc.
    Whereas when my wife opens this illus. file on her computer, it wonders where "mycomputer" went to.  So, she relinks the pic files and now Illust. makes the new links as:
    DropBox/hercomputer/MacintoshHD/Users...etc.
    She makes changes while the file (and all pic files) are still located on DropBox.
    I then open the file located on DropBox and it says "Hey, man, where is the pic file listed now as "DropBox/hercomputer/Mac HD...".  I then have to relink and then the new reference is DropBox/mycomputer/MacHD..."
    Not sure if that's why but that's my guess.
    The Old Thread above wrote about an Absolute Path that Illy is using.
    Is that the official answer from the Adobe Illy team?  Is there a good reason for this?  How can multiple people work on a single file and ref files stored on a server and not have these pop-up, relinking dialogue boxes happen?

  • Aperture referencing files to time machine HD instead of from 'working' HD

    Every once in a while I will go into a project see the "broken link" icon on my previews. In Finder I check the location I have all my images stored (and initially referenced) on an external HD. They are there.
    I go to File>>Locate Referenced Files and see the referenced images have been changed to a location on my separate Time Machine external HD. I locate them and everything is fine but it's annoying.
    I don't not have Time Machine on automatic because I have a laptop and like to choose when it backs up. I've looked through other Time Machine/Aperture problems and couldn't find anything. Does any one know of a setting, advice, or have experienced this at all?
    Thanks.

    Thanks. Sorry, for the delay to answer your questions:
    I'm the only one managing the files, and it has happened quite a few times now. The files are in multiple projects ranging from recent imports to projects from a few years ago.
    I didn't need to use "File→Relocate Master ..." just the "File→Locate Referenced Files" because my masters are still intact on my working HD. It says that my previous location was on "Volumes/Time Machine/photography/...etc." when I always import masters to "Volumes/My book/photography/...etc"
    Does Aperture notice if I move master files because my thought is that Aperture is noticing my TM copying files to another HD and then referencing those instead of my original working HD I import to. Then, the next time I open Aperture it cannot reference the Time Machine files.
    Is it because I have TM (USB) backing up my internal HD and my external working HD (FW800)?

  • Deleting referenced files in Aperture 3

    With version 3, I'm trying Aperture for the first time and have a deletion question.
    I've imported both ways:
    1) "in the Aperture Library", and
    2) "in their current location"
    My question concerns method 2, aka Referenced Files.
    Is there an option that can be set so the referenced file will be moved to the OS X trash when the Aperture trash is emptied? In other words, method 2 behaving the same as method 1.
    Thanks,
    Al

    I haven't done it with Aperture 3 (I moved back to managed files) but in general with referenced files it behaves the same as option 1, except it asks you "Do you want to move referenced files to the trash?" and if you say yes then it deletes them.
    Have you tried it?

  • Finding referenced files

    I am unable to get my referenced files to re-link to the original RAW file on my external hard drive. I have gone through many post and have experience relocating referenced files which works great when you can actually get to that screen. I have tried all the repairs in the repair menu with no luck. I click on the preview of the picture and select "locate referenced files" and I get "No referenced Files". If I go to File>Locate Referenced files I get "Unavailable original files cannot be relocated". I seem to be stuck in a error loop and I'm not sure why it won't me just redirect it to the correct file? I know I can reimport but I don't want to loose all the adjustments I've made to various pictures. I know the files are on my hard drive. It's also very strange because it magiaclly happened to library's that have worked fine in the past and that I haven't touched in some time. I keep my pictures on an external hard drive and have the latest updates of Aperture and OS.

    Are the files in question really referenced files and not managed?
    I click on the preview of the picture and select "locate referenced files" and I get "No referenced Files".
    That error message usually will appear, when you try to locate a referenced file for managed files.
    If I go to File>Locate Referenced files I get "Unavailable original files cannot be relocated".
    And that error message will occur, when you use the command "File > Relocate Original", not when you try to use the command "locate referenced Files".
    From the symptoms you describe, I suspect that the files in question might be managed files, but Aperture has lost the connection to these managed files. Unfortunately, Aperture has no tools to fix broken references to managed files, because that is not supposed to happen.
    Check,if you can find the originals in question inside the Aperture library. Ctrl-click the APerture library, select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu, and then browse the "Masters" folder, if your missing originals are inside. The originals are filed by the dates of the import session.

  • Vault in 1.5 - a copy of your "referenced files"?

    In 1.5, as I understand it, your image files don't have to be in your Library, they can be stored where you like.
    In that case, when you make a backup via Vault, does it include copies of your images, or just the metadata describing where they are?

    Very easy to find out for yourself - go to make a new
    Vault and you will get a warning message saying that
    there are referenced files which will not be
    included, and that you will have to back them up
    yourself.
    True - except I haven't got Aperture yet - my question was part of my evaluation process If I still need to back up stuff myself that's a negative mark !

  • Purpose of creating a vault when using referenced files

    I have a laptop with a limited size SSD and recenlty installed Aperture to manage my collection of images and video clips (from camera so short). My assets are currently on DVD's and so have referenced these DVD's within Aperature. My long range plan is to copy these DVD's to external drives so that one drive can be at home and the other at work for backup purposes.
    My question pertains to the purpose of the vault when media is being referenced. Does the vault back up thumbnails, previews (1280/1280 at 6/med) and metadata...etc? Although most of my media (all but my current Project) is referenced my library file is currently 12GB. I have 13,426 photos/video being referenced on DVD with the current project being referenced with a folder on my laptop's drive. The idea was to monitor the size of the folder of the curren project so as to move to DVD when the size approches 4GB.
    I noticed with off-line referenced files that you can not do much with the previews. I figured that with the preview being 1280x1280 one could use the Email function, share...etc. Other than of course previewing and slideshows is there a reason that previews can not be smaller the 1280x ?
    Thanks for your time, someone....

    I would recommend at least making your previews the resolution of your main display so that you can see the images full-screen when your referenced files are not connected (btw, the resolution of your display will have an asterisk beside it in the preview size drop-down box).
    I have my preview size set to 1920 (or maybe even the size up from that -- I can't remember for sure) so that I can easily create slideshows for my HDTV if I want. But here's the catch, I also chose to disable previews for new projects in the Aperture preferences, and also turned off "maintain previews" for all projects in the library. I only create previews for my "better" images. The reason for this is that I'm still very much an amateur photographer who relies on taking multiple shots, stacking them, and then rating and selecting favourites for sharing and personal use. I didn't want my hard drive filling up with thousands of previews that will never be used for anything.
    Food for thought!

  • Delete Master and Referenced Files?

    Hi,
    Can master and referenced files be deleted in Aperture?
    Thanks,
    Barb

    Hi, barbfromedmonton,
    why do you ask? The answer depends on what you want to achieve. Are you new to Aperture? You will need a basic understanding of the image management of Aperture, as described in the Aperture 3 User Manual, see the chapter on importing images.
    In short, the master image files are very important to Aperture, and never should be deleted, unless you want to delete an image completely and to remove it from your database.
    For each image you import Aperture will store (or reference) the master image file. This file will be used, if you edit your image to derive and create new versions of the image. One master image file can be used together with many versions of the same image. These version are represented in a very compact and clever way: Aperture only stores the steps how to compute these versions from the master image files, and not the final image itself. In this way Aperture saves space, since the versions are not full duplicates of the original master files, and you can have many versions of the same image without much additional storage required.
    But a version without its master file cannot be exported in full resolution and cannot be edited. Without the master image files you will be left with previews in poor resolution.
    In Aperture it is pointless to ask about deleting master files. If you want to edit an image in your Aperture Library you need the master image file too; and if you don't want an image in your library any longer, then just delete all its versions and you will delete the master image file too (there are advanced options too).
    If the reason for question is, that your Aperture library is very large and you need to free space on your system drive, then post back and tell us what you want to achieve. Aperture offers the possibility to store the master image files outside the Aperture library as referenced masters, so that the library itself can be considerably smaller.

  • Change from managed to referenced files

    My hard drive is full, so I'd like to move all the managed master files in my Aperture 3 library off my internal hard drive onto an external 'photos' hard drive as referenced masters instead. Although I feel like I understand the general principles of what's involved, I have some specific questions I'm hoping some more experience A3 users can help with:
    What command in Aperture do I use to move all the managed master files in my Aperture 3 library off my internal hard drive onto an external one, converting them all to referenced masters? (I can only seem to find instructions for going the other way (consolidating referenced masters into the library) or for moving masters that are already referenced.)
    After all my master files are converted to referenced masters, if the referenced external hard drive is disconnected, will I still be able to make adjustments to the 'off-line' files using the previews stored in the library? (e.g.: adjust colours, crop)
    After all my master files are converted to referenced masters, if the referenced external hard drive is disconnected, will I still be able to edit the metadata for those off-line files using the previews stored in the library? (e.g.: change time, add keywords)
    Time Machine automatically back-up the referenced master files on the external 'photos' hard drive? (I understand that this would at the very minimum require that my Time Machine external back-up hard drive be big enough to back-up both my internal drive and my photos external drive -- which it is.)
    Regardless of the Time Machine answer in #4, if I duplicate the photo directory on my external 'photos' hard drive onto another external drive as a back-up, and then if the 'photos' hard drive fails, is it a simple process to get Aperture to point to the files on the back-up hard drive and use those instead?
    Thanks everyone!! I really look forward to your feedback.

    2. You won't be able to make adjustments to the files once the Hard Drive is disconnected ( the masters are offline). You can only rotate the images.
    3. Yes, you can make all sorts of metadata edits to off line masters as well as create albums, rate, etc.
    4. Yes it will. You need to deselect your External Hard Drive from the list of excluded files to Back Up from System Preferences, Time Machine, Options.
    5. The process to re link Aperture to your back up Masters on your 2nd Hard Drive is simple, but not automatic. Aperture keeps track of your Hard Drive on which masters are stored, so you'll need to use the Locate Referenced Files menu under File. Ideally, if you select the Library and use the Locate Refernced Files, you just point Aperture to the first file on the list and then select Reconnect All, but it can be time consuming depending on the size of your library.
