Probably the FAQ of the week, but....

Something that's been irking me for a while.
Windows Vista, about 3GB RAM, about 300GB of HD (at least half free), AMD dual core chip at about 2ghz. (SP1)
When I'm veiwing a PDF (free Version of Adobe 8), and do a "Save", a default directory pops up.
If I don't choose to use that one, and type something like "C:\temp\sheepdip.pdf", I get an error message about illegal characters in the file name. While I'm typing that, I see the insides of the directory I've named, showing me other files with similar names, as it should.
I have to go to the top of the box and select the directory I want, with the mouse, and then open that director FIRST, before clicking "Save" with just the file name on the file name line.
This is contrary to usual Windows "Save As" handling, and it always upsets me because I have to first mouse around to get to the directory, and then re-type (or edit) the file name line, after I've already typed a complete file name and path....
Any ideas?

Dunno....
I click on the little disket, and directly get a dialog that wants a file name on the bottom, and has the usual Windows Vista style "pick a directory" on top.
Normal Windows behavior lets you type a fully qualified path name into the file name box, and runs with it. This one doesn't.... You have to pick a directory (folder) up on top, and then just put a file name on the bottom.
While the dialog is letting you type in a fully qualified path, it scrolls around inside the directory you've typed. I'm guessing that the dialog's output is being error-checked without reference to possible path names, rather than parsing out stuff like that first....

    Had the same problem and the same message --  was suddenly unable to access icloud apps on my pc, also using Windows 7 and Internet Explorer. After several days of pulling my hair out, decided to try a different browser and was able to get in by using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.  Hope this helps.

    You probably already know this, but I was thinking that if your new to
    java (as I once was) you might have missed this. after you compile your
    program: javac myprog.java and get the classfile myprog.class when you go
    to run your program you need only specify the object that contains the main
    method: java myprog instead of: java myprog.class
    if you specify the whole file name and not just the class name you will
    also get the NoClassDefFoundError.

  • I lost all my contacts for the FOURTH time this week, but they're still there in "Messages." Help please I'm tired of going to Verizon to get it fixed.

    Please help. I recently went into my phone to find out that when I open contacts, there's none there. I've even checked the "Groups" tab and under the heading "On my iPhone" there is nothing there.
    The weird thing is, when I go into messages, they're all still there along with their names, but they're not in the contacts.
    I'm getting really aggrivated. Please help me.

    Check your email account. see if they are their, You can then import them on your DAV card, The best thing to is add them to icoud then they will be safe.
    Apple support can talk you through it.

    is it possible to make a copy of the FAQs module? I need to have FAQs in different languages.
    I can add event, photo, news ands media modules but not a new FAQs module.
    I also found that you can add a category and display the FAQs with the filter: cr or individual filter. But where do I add the category name to filter on?

    Quick solution: the ID is used for the category name, so I need to do a time consuming process to find the id.

    I'm currently dealing with this issue myself, except that my rMBP has NO articles in the reading list.  It's a brand new rMBP too, purchased just this week, with the 2.6 Ghz Processor & 16GB of RAM.
    Let's see what we can find.  I may just take it back to the Apple Store.

  • I had Microsoft Office installed in my Macbook Air by one of the technicians in the store, it was working fine the first week but after that it started popping a notice saying it cannot verify my suscription online and now I cannot open any documents?

    I just bought a Macbook Air almost a month now. When I bought it, the technician installed Microsoft Office 365 as they were having a promotion at the time. However after a week of using it, it started popping up a notice saying that it cannot verify Microsoft Office. I still managed to open the word document but as of today, it will not open. I took it to the Mac store last week, and they said that there was nothing wrong with it and they could not figure out any problem.
    I don't know what to do and I am in desperate need of help. I cannot open my documents at all and I have my research paper that I need to finish writing. This is very disappointing and extremely stressful for me. If anyone has any suggestions of how this can be fixed, please let me know. I do not want to lose my hard work =(

    Microsoft Office 365 is a subscription - based service. You have to pay for it... and keep paying for it... and paying for it... as in 365 days a year... or lose your hard work.
    Office Home Premium is a mere $10 a month, but a convenient annual subscription is only $100 a year. This is a substantial discount to Microsoft's Office 365 business products ($150 / employee / year).
    Such a deal! Are you not absolutely thrilled?

    I already watched and read every tutorial out there regarding this topic and even tried the adobe chat support, but the guy on the other end of the line disconnected me…, probably he didn't understand what i wanted from him because english is not my native language, so a will try to be very, very clear about this one..
    please note, that i am new to muse, this is my first project ever.
    my idea is as following:
    when the customer comes to our companies site, he just sees our logo on a white Background. the logo consists of, say, four elements. when the customer scrolls down, the logo starts to disassamble: first the first part of the logo flies out the left side of the site, then the second part of the logo vanishes down, then the third part of the logo flies to the right, then the fourth part of the logo flies to the top and out of the customers view. given what i have seen, it is possible to do that….
    so…..
    now i have the four parts of my logo imported as png files into muse and assembled them in design view to build our companies logo. I select every one of the four parts and go into the scroll effects tab left beside the layers tab. first i enter the same values for every one of the four parts: initial motion: 0x and 0x again for the left and right motion; key position ( t-handle) : 0px; final motion: 0x and 0x again for the left and right value.
    now i hit "preview".: the logo is "pinned" at the correct position, i can scroll but the logo stays where it is. so far so good….
    now i select all the four elements again and go to the scroll effecs tab. at "final motion", i click the down arrows and enter 1x. I hit Preview…
    when i am scrolling down the WHOLE logo goes down…. so far so good.
    NOW i want the first part of the logo to go down, THEN the second part to go left, THEN the third part to go up, THEN the fourth part to go right.
    so i select ONLY the first part, go to the scroll motion tab, at "final motion" i click the left arrows, then i enter 1x.( the up-down value, i set to 0 again).. i hit Preview…
    the first part of the logo goes left as soon as i start scrolling, the other three parts still go down at the same time…
    NOW i want the second part of the logo to start moving, when the first part has left the scene, not at the same time as the first part.
    SO I SELECT THE SECOND PART AND DRAG ITS T-HANDLE (KEY POSITION) DOWN TO, LETS SAY, 200PX. SO IT STARTS MOVING ONLY AFTER THE CUSTOMER HAS REACHED THAT POINT, RIGHT?
    BUT WHEN I PREVIEW THAT ****, THE LOGO IS NOT TOGETHER ANYMORE, THE SECOND PART IS FLOATING ANYWHERE ELSE BUT WHERE IT SHOULD BE…..WTFF????
    short: when i move the t handle, the initial position of the object changes. thats what i said to the adobe employee, but he said, that thats the expected behavior….
    but if thats so, how can i have my four parts correctly together, so they form my logo, but with different t handles, so that they all start to move at different times??
    Pleeease help me, i am dying of frustration here…..:( that behavior cant be right, right?

    But i really wonder how you did that. did you always switch between design view and preview view, then change the key position for 2px then switch back, to align the four letters? because i imagine that can get really frustrating, if you have a logo consisting of 58 parts instead of 4!:)

  • I've cleared almost 30 gig off of my hard drive in the past 2 weeks, and it will temporarily show that in the Get Info box.  But hours later, I am still getting a disk full error and all of the memory has disappeared.

    Step 1
    Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
    Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
    Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
    According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
    To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
    You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
    Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
    Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
    ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
    Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
    Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
    When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
    Why it's like that I don't think that Apple have said (these are user-to-user forums). If you haven't downloaded it on your iPad then have you checked to see if you can download it on your computer's iTunes (Store > Check For Available Downloads menu option) or Apple TV ?
    If it doesn't show on either of them then you can try contacting iTunes Support and see if they will let you download it on a different computer/device or refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
    If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
