Problem Accessing Hotmail

I've been encountering a strange problem with an ADSL connection .
The users are not able to log in to their Hotmail accounts.
The connection times out .
I cannot see any inbound connection dropped from the log , but I cannot excluded it .
How can we troubleshoot it ? is there any known issue ?

try lowering mtu settings to 1492. Alot of adsl routers sometime need this. WE have a sdsl customer at my work who had to do this to get to 3com.com and xircom.com hehe :P
SInce you did not say what kind of a router you are using i will also give you the info for changing in in the users machine as well.
1. You have to tweak the registry. Remember NTS has limited the MTU to 1454 while the PPPoE Maximum is 1492. Although this small increase will do you no good if you don't actually have an MTU greater or equal to 1454, it still widens your MTU's upper bound.
Go to Start/Run and type in "regedit" (no quotes), then click down through here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/
Services/Class/Net/000n/Ndi/params/MaxFrameSize/"max" ....
(Where "n" is a number, and the registry directory for your Network Telesystems PPPoE Adapter (NTSP3) adapter). It's the one with the actual MaxFrameSize string (this is not the one you edit). Now the thing that you want to modify is the "max" string in that 000n directory. Change that to 1492. Now re-boot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
(To be sure that you put the settings in the correct places, go Here and down-load some pictures of the registry):
~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Ok, now that the upper limit on your MTU is good, it's time to set it. Go to:
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Network
Network Telesystems Enternet PPPoE Adapter (NTSP3)
Click on the advanced tab
Do you see that thing called "MaxFrameSize"? Change that to 1492.
Now re-boot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For Win2K/XP users, this appears to be the proper place to set MTU:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000n
MaxFrameSize = "1486"
- where n = the key containing this entry:
DriverDisc = "Efficient Networks..."
1486 appears to be the maximum MTU settings for Win2K/XP using Enternet software. See this thread for more details.
  • Certificate authentication problem, accessing hotmail through safari
    When trying to access hotmail on my Mac I keep getting a invalid security certificate. eg: The certificate for accessing blu169.mail.live.com is not valid etc.... When I click on expand the certificate looks ok (it is mail.live.com signed by Verisign).
    I have checked the date and time are both correct and is set to auto. I have cleared cache and cookies with no change. It is isolated to the Mac, as I can still access the account from my iphone. It affects multiple accounts, as I cannot access using an alternate email address either.
    This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are several possible causes for it.
    Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
    Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
              Set date and time automatically
    if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
    Step 2
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Show Info
    from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
    Repeat with this line:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
    If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it by pressing command-V. Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 3
    Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
    In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
    In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain
    from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
    Open the View menu in the menu bar. If one of the items in the menu is
              Show Expired Certificates
    select it. Otherwise it will show
              Hide Expired Certificates
    which is what you want.
    From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu labeled
              Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    select
              no value specified
    Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings.
    Now open the same inspection window again, and select
              When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
    Save the change in the same way as before.
    Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.
    Step 4
    Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
    Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
              Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
    from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
              Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
    There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
    Step 6
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.
    Step 7
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open -e /etc/hosts
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1                              localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1                                        localhost
    fe80::1%lo0                    localhost
    If that's not what you see, post the contents of the window.
  • Safari Problem Accessing Hotmail
    Since Microsoft changed their hotmail accounts to Windows Live Hotmail I have been unable to access my email account consistently via Safari. Normally when I type in the correct web address the address just keeps going around in an infinite loop of different addresses without opening the page. The web address is correct because it works when I re-boot into windows. However, I don't want to have to do this every time I want to get to my email. I am using Safari 3.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.4.11. Does anyone else have this problem or am I the only mad one left with a hotmail email account???
    The only think I've done recently is install a different antivirus program and uninstall the old one which had expired. Not sure if this is linked to the problem...?
  • PowerMac 7300 Problems: Browser, Accessing Hotmail, Freezing
    We have an ancient PowerMac 7300, with a G3 500Mhz upgrade. I know that some people will tell us to simply get a new(er) computer, but that is not an option right now.
    We are having problems accessing many websites, including Hotmail, which we use a lot. We keep getting messages telling us that our web-browsers need to be upgraded. We use mostly Internet Explorer and Netscape.
    Are there any other browsers that might run better, and allow us access to more websites with fewer problems? I'm running System 9.1, with 200MB RAM. There are two internal HDs, the main one we use, with System 9.1, is a 40GB, the other HD is a 6GB, with System 8.6.
    This old beast still runs great, other than freezing frequently, especially when we try to access the Internet. Thanks for any suggestions.
    -- vja4Him *Mac Addict for Christ*
    I've also used the final version of Internet Explorer (5.1.7) for pre-OS X Macs, but it was last updated in 2002 - which makes it incompatible with some web sites. Additionally, Microsoft dropped support for it and pulled the download links from their web site. The first thing that you need to do is allocate more memory to it, because the default "Preferred" memory setting is ridiculously low. You should set it to at least 20-25 MBs as a comfortable amount, since you have enough System memory to be generous. With the program not running, click on its icon to highlight it and select "Get Info - Memory" from the File drop-down menu. Adjust the "Preferred" setting to an amount between 20480K and 25600K. This should prevent freezes and permit the program to run more smoothly, but it won't change the fact that it's an old browser with expired security certificates. Netscape Communicator is known to be a bloated alternative to IE. Others Forum regulars have posted their evaluations of the other browsing options available to pre-OS X users, but those programs are also succumbing to age and a lack of ongoing development.
  • Windows Live won't install on my mac.  Can't Access Hotmail.
    I have MSN as my home page and access my email there with a link to Hotmail. In the last few days, the site has been changed and now when I try to access Hotmail, I am redirected to a new window indicating that I need to subscribe to Windows Live. When I download the file, it disappears from my downloaded files and therfore I cannot install it. I can access my Hotmail through a regular PC and have not been asked on a PC to subscribe to Windows Live. So, it would seem the problems lies with the Macbook, but I'm not sure.
    Can anyone assist me?
    Thanks
    wait. i'm trying to download windows live and it won't even let me get to the web page, on safari or firefox.
  • Why can't I access hotmail anymore? It won't let me sign in.
    Hello,
    This morning when I checked my hotmail account twice using Firefox, I had to enter my ID and password (which I usually don't have to do because that info is automatically saved) both times. Then, this afternoon I could no longer sign in at all and received this message:
    The Windows Live Network is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons:
    * This site may be experiencing a problem
    * The site may not be a member of the Windows Live Network
    You can:
    * You can sign in or sign up at other sites on the Windows Live Network, or try again later at this site.
    I tried using Internet Explorer instead and I was able to access hotmail with no problem. How do I fix the problem with Firefox?
    Thanks!
    Maybe the parental control is activated for the guest account? Have a look in System Preferences -> Parental Control.
    Hello.
    It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
    Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
    If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
    If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.
    It happened suddenly. After that, I reset computer to an earlier date. Did not fix problem. I reloaded Internet explorer, Version 8. Did not fix problem. I can access Hotmail from another computer without problem. I think I changed something in tools that might have caused the problem. All fixes and virus checking are up to date.
    thank you for your response. I will try Snow Leopard this evening. Made some progress. Set up Entourage for mail and redirected Hotmail through it. It appeared to work. However, I have noticed that I cannot sent messages to any hotmail.co.uk or hotmail.com account. They remain in the Outbox and there is a message to say that the Hotmail server has failed. All messages to other providers are sent without any problem. Thank you and I will keep in touch. Helen
