Problem attaching physical drive to hyper-v
I am running Hyper-V 2012 Core with several vms. I want to attach a physical drive to one of the VMs. It is a 500 GB NTFS basic, not dynamic, drive. It is not part of a RAID, though it is attached to a hot swappable RAID card. In Hyper-V I can see the
drive and can cd through it's folders. I opened diskpart and selected the drive and made it offline. I ran a select disk to verify that it was offline. Then I went to our 2k8 R2 box which we use to manage our hyper-v servers and selected this server. I opened
the existing VM, which is running 2k8 R2 as well, and tried to add the physical drive via settings but the option is grayed out in both IDE and SCSI, I have tried with the VM both on and off. I have tried rebooting the Hyper-V server but I still receive the
same results, the dropdown to select a physical drive remains grayed out. What am I missing?
Hi, can you run server manager to connect to your core server and run disk manager to check the status of the disk.
what do you mean by I can see the drive in "hyper-v" ?
as long as the disk is initialized, and offline, and basic , it should be available to select .
take alook at these articles they may help :

Problem attaching USB drive to my TC
Hello all, I have tried searching all over the place and I can't seem to find anything that is helping me.
I have a 2TB USB drive that I recently attached to my MBP, formatted it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then proceeded to copy about 1TB of data to it. All is working great when it is attached to directly to my laptop but when I connect it to the USB port on my TC to try and use it as an additional network file system the TC flashes orange and tells me the "Disk needs repair". I put it back on my MBP and it still works fine.
Am I missing something here? I should be able to do this right?
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.thxceej, welcome to the discussion area!
Suggest that you connect the drive directly to your MBP, then open
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Click to select your drive on the left and then click Repair Disk at the lower right of the window and let the process run. It may take 30-60 minutes depending on how much data you have on the disk.
When the disk has been repaired, power down the complete network...all devices. Connect the drive back to the USB port on the Time Capsule. Then start the modem first, then your router, then devices one at a time until everything is powered back up.
See if that helps. -
Problem attaching our driver to our new device
Hello,
We have a driver for Solaris Sparc 9, 10, 11. It supports various
PCI and PCI express devices of ours with different PCI ID values.
When we are installing the driver, we do
add_drv -m "* 0666 root sys" -i '"pci1234,5678" "pci1357,2468"' mydriver
I have changed the device ID values and driver name to protect the innocent.
This has always worked just fine. Recently we added another device with
another PCI ID very similar to another on the list. Unfortunately,
attach never gets called for the devices of this type. Attach will get
called for devices of the other type if they are present. I know whether
it is being called due to logging being done right at the beginning
of our attach function.
So I am trying to figure out why this is happening.
All the correct entries are in /etc/driver_aliases.
prtconf -v shows "(driver not attached)" next to the ID of the device.
prtconf -D shows "(driver name: mydriver)" next to the ID of the device.
Thanks,
NathanI managed to figure out what our driver issue was, having to do with an error occurring in our probe function for the new device. So I no longer need any assistance with this issue. Thanks.

SQL Server 2012 Physical vs. Hyper-V Same Query Different Results
I have a database that is on physical hardware (16 CPU's, 32GB Ram).
I have a copy of the database that was attached to a virtual Hyper-V server (16 CPU's, 32GB Ram).
Both Servers and SQL Servers are identical OS=2008R2 Standard, SQL Server 2012R2 Standard same patch level SP1 CU8.
Same query run on both servers return same data set, but the time is much different 26 Sec on Physical, 5 minutes on virtual.
Statistics are identical on both databases, query execution plane is identical on both queries.
Indices are identical on both databases.
When I use set statistics IO, I get different results between the two servers.
One table in particular (366k rows) on physical shows logical reads of 15400, on Hyper-V reports logical reads of 418,000,000 that is four hundred eighteen million for the same table.
When the query is run on the physical it uses no CPU, when run on the Hyper-V it takes 100% of all 16 processors.
I have experimented with Maxdop and it does exactly what it should by limiting processors but it doesn't fix the issue.A massive difference in logical reads usually hints at differences in the query plan.
When you compare query plans, it is essential that you look at actual query plans.
Please note that if your server / Hyper-V supports parallelism (which is almost always nowadays), then you are likely to have two query plans: a parallel and a serial query plan. Of course the actual query plan will make clear which one is used in which
case.
To say this again, this is by far the most likely reason for your problem.
There are other (unlikely) reasons that could be the case here:
runaway parallel threads or other bugs in the optimizer or engine. Make sure you have installed the latest service pack
Maybe the slow server (Hyper-V) has extreme fragmentation in the relevant tables
As mentioned by Erland, you have much much more information about the query and query plan than we do. You already know whether or not parallelism is used, how many threads are being used in it, if you have no, one or several Loop Joins in the query (my
bet is on at least one, possibly more), etc. etc.
With the limited information you can share (or choose to share), involving PSS is probably your best course of action.

You need something like StarWind Tape Redirector that "iSCSI-izes" hardware attached to host. So you'll be able to connect with iSCSI initiator from inside a VM running on this host, some other host or even other physical machine (as long as it
has iSCSI connectivity), see:
StarWind Tape Redirector
http://www.starwindsoftware.com/download-starwind-tape-redirector
So at the end of the day you'll have something like on the picture below:
Good news: this software offering is 100% free so you don't need to pay anything to anybody :)
Hope this helped!
StarWind Virtual SAN clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts. -
How to find out web-inf path from the physical drive?
How to find out web-inf path from the physical drive?
I have some user profiles in web-inf directory.SO I want to know the path from root directory like
d:/program files/allaire/jrun/appname/web-inf/profiles/username like that.
Presently I am able to get the path upto the application directory and from that I am concatinationg web-inf/profiles/username .
But it is giving problems when it is deployed under unix or linux.Because web-inf there it treats as WEB_INF
SO I want to get the path of web-inf directory with out hard coding.
ThankuString path = application.getRealPath("/WEB-INF/profiles/username");
Note sure why you need this, but you don't need the real path to read the file - you can get an InputStream using the relative path. See ServletContext getResource() and getResourceAsStream(). -
Hello,
Im using Photoshop CC and when it starts up it sometimes gives me this error message:
'Problem with display driver and has temporary disabled enhancements which use graphics hardware.'
What does this mean?
Then it tells me to download the latstest software and gives me a link to an Adobe site that tells me nothing about a sollution.

Disk Utility 13 problem with USB drives
There appears to be a problem with Disk Utility 13 (part of OS X 10.9). At least, so far as I can tell, everything traces back to this app, or possibly OS X 10.9 itself.
I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to OS X 10.9 (reformatted hard drive, installed system from scratch, updated with all the latest Apple updates). I pre-checked all my third party software to make sure it was 10.9 compatible before installing it after the system cleanup, so everything I’m running supposedly has been approved as safe for 10.9. But I’m seeing a problem formatting USB drives that I do not encounter when running under 10.8.
I have a Seagate STAA500101 (“FreeAgent GoFlex”) drive connected via Seagate’s USB3 adapter that I’ve used for some time as a Time Machine backup. Post-overhaul, I decided to erase the backup and start fresh. When I attempt to format it (single GUID partition) with Disk Utility, I see the following messages go by:
Formatting disk1s2 as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with name Untitled 1
Could not mount disk1s2 with name (null) after erase
Then there’s a pause, and the format appears to conclude fine. But if I run a “Verify Disk” immediately, I get this:
Verifying partition map for “Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Media”
Checking prerequisites
Checking the partition list
Checking for an EFI system partition
Checking the EFI system partition’s size
Checking the EFI system partition’s file system
Checking all HFS data partition loader spaces
Volume on disk1s2 has 0 bytes of trailing loader space and it needs 134217728 bytes
Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting
Error: Partition map needs repair because a data partition needs loader space.
As the drive has just been formatted, that seemed odd. I took it over to another Mac still running 10.8.5 and formatted it there — it worked just fine. Verified just fine. Took the drive back to my MacBook Air and tried to verify the disk — same failure.
I wanted to rule out bad media, so I took a Lexar 16GB USB flash drive and tried to format it with Disk Utility 13 — got the same problem.
The only success I’ve had formatting USB drives under 10.9 is to boot up into OS X Recovery. Disk Utility there formatted my Seagate drive without an error. But once I booted back into normal 10.9 operating mode, the drive once again fails to verify; it makes me leery about using it as a Time Machine backup.
I suppose it’s possible there could be some background component like Sophos causing problems when formatting drives, but if I format a drive via OS X Recovery or another Mac under 10.8, that wouldn’t explain why the drives fail to verify.
Anyone got any other observations on this issue?Problem resolved. I'm posting this note for anyone else who might run into this situation and come across this discussion.
It actually did turn out to be Sophos -- Cloud, that is. I'd been using Sophos' free Mac antivirus software on a variety of systems but forgot that I was now testing out Sophos Cloud on my own MacBook, which is their new endpoint solution, and supposed to be compatible with OS X 10.9 (although the Mac version is listed as "beta") Sophos Cloud includes a new feature called Device Control which allows you to create a company-wide policy to control access to hardware such as USB drives, optical drives, etc. But apparently it's still pretty buggy. I had my Device Control configured with the default setting of "monitor but do not block" but it was most definitely gumming up the system. With Sophos Cloud installed, here's what happens if I try to run "Verify Disk" on any attached drive. Note on the left side how "disk2s2" shows as a sub-volume for each hard drive.
So if I uninstall Sophos Cloud, reboot and rescan, here's what I get:
Works fine. Note that the "disk2s2" subvolumes are also gone. This is the way Disk Utility also appears on a 10.8 or 10.9 system, even if you have the standard free Sophos for Mac software installed. It's only Sophos Cloud that's not playing nice. It also appears to have stopped me from being able to play DVDs from an attached Apple USB SuperDrive -- that problem was likewise solved by removing Sophos Cloud. -
Disk Utility partitions wrong physical drive?
I have two firewire drives... one is daisy-chained to the other. Let's call the one attached directly to my iMac as DiskOne and the drive that's plugged into DiskOne we'll call DiskTwo.
So, I was resizing partitions on DiskTwo using the Disk Utility in Leopard 10.5.2. It's pretty obvious in the interface what physical drive you're on. The resizing of DiskTwo went fine. Looks great.
Afterwards, I then realized that DiskOne had been repartitioned as well. Yikes! 28,000 photos and my iTunes library gone. Poof!
Like I said, the interface in Disk Utility is very clear... I never took action on DiskOne... and yet it's now "empty".
Lesson Learned: Only have one physical drive plugged in/turned on when repartitioning.
I'm optimistic that professional disk recovery will be able to get my files back for me. Didn't use secure erase, nor has anything been written to that drive since.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this? And if you've "accidentally" partitioned a drive, is there a Apple or third party utility you'd recommend to get those files back?
Thanks!unfortunately, the nature of this kind of thing is that all directories, file names, and other descriptive info are all gone.
Even if I find my iPhoto library files, they'll be useless as they contain pointers to images files that no longer reside in original directories with their original names.
A data recovery tool just finds every file it can, names it something generic and unique, and in this case, throws all .JPGs in one folder, all .MP4s in another, etc.
Not fun... and reiterates the fact that you really can never be too careful even keeping multiple backups... because even though there's a very high probability that even though all 28,000 photos were found in this case, I'll likely never be whole again b/c I'm gonna hafta sift thru 100,000 recovered .JPGs to attempt to find them. And that's not including the whole out-of-whack iPhoto database that describes files in locations that no longer exist and cannot be recreated. -
Ogre 3D 'glGetString' Problem, May Be Driver Issue
Hello!
I'm relatively new to Arch Linux, all I did till now was install it and get X running with the 'awesome' window manager. I must say, I like it, especially pacman, AUR and ABS.
I'm a hobbyist programmer and I generally write graphics applications (games) with Ogre 3D. I decided to get Ogre 3D and build it. I got the latest SVN HEAD, and built it, it built fine. However, when I run a sample, I get the following error (which occurs right when it tries to create the GLX subsystem):-
OgreGLSupport.cpp:57: virtual void Ogre::GLSupport::initialiseExtensions: Assertion `pcVer && "Problems getting GL version string using glGetString"' failed
I've run Ogre 3D applications both on Windows and Ubuntu on this very same laptop, so I don't think its a hardware issue. It may be a driver issue though. I have 'xf86-video-intel' installed, and hotplugging turned off with "AutoAddDevices" "False" in xorg.conf. 'lspci | grep VGA' gives:-
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
It is possible that it's an Ogre specific issue, but I still thought I'd mention it here because it could also have to do with drivers and other configuration stuff.
To check whether glGetString() works, I took the program from the second NeHe tutorial and modified it to spit out glGetString results, and it says "Vendor: Mesa Project, Renderer: Software Rasterizer, Version: 2.1 Mesa 7.2".
I've also run some other graphics applications (the Bullet physics engine (which I just built today) demos), and they run much slower than how they did on Windows and Ubuntu.
Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?
Thanks for your help!
Last edited by nikki (2009-01-06 12:41:27)Humnn... I don't know. How I "solved" it today: downgrade xorg-server to 1.5.3, catalyst to 9.4 and kernel to 2.6.28. Now I have my game working again. I think it was only a problem with the driver... I'll try to upgrade asap.

Attaching USB drive causes EX4 to become unresponsive.
Hello, I have tried to setup a usb to nas backup a few times and keep having the same problem. Upon attaching the 4TB usb drive (usb 3.0) to the back of the EX4 the NAS becomes unresponsive. I can no longer access it from the dashboard or the my cloud app on a mobile device. The app says it is offline. The ex4 is on but no drives are spinning. The usb drive is spinning however.
Once, I was able to see the EX4 and the attached USB drive in my file explorer. It showed the USB drive as a share. It said something like "Share 2_1." However the internal folders were not visible. Then the EX4 froze and went unresponsive - which caused me to try and manually shut it down. It did not power down and after making sure no data was being transferred I had to pull the power (as recommended on this forum).
Once I was able to get as far as setup up a USB to NAS backup on the dashboard. I set up the source and destination folders, etc. upon saving the job the EX4 is inaccessible, while the USB drive spins.
What's going on? Is it taking a long time to index the attached drive? Is it not compatible with the USB drive (seagate 4tb external NTFS USB 3.0)?
Any insight or advice would be great. Thanks!By default the EX4 will scan the attached USB share for media. This process takes all the CPU of the EX4 for long periods of time, and can also lead tot he creation of numerous metadata directories in your attached drive. You should turn this off. In addition, if you use the USB drive for backups, the DEFAULT option for the EX4 is to commence backups when the drive is connected. This setting can be turned off in the GUI setup for the backup jobs. In addiiton, in my experience, NTFS drives take more overhead than EXT formatted drives.

Multiple Physical Drives in PC
I have a Windows 8.1 PC that I have used with 3 physical drives installed (80GB for OS, 1TB for storage, 40GB for other stuff). They are all SATA drives. My MOBO supports 6 SATA connections. I tried to add two more SATA drives to the PC (250GB and 500GB),
but Windows would only recognize 4 at a time in explorer and comp management.
Is this a limitation of Windows 8.1? Or am I looking in the wrong place for the problem? (MOBO BIOS)
I've searched Bing several times with different queries looking for this answer, but I never found it. Sorry if this is a repeated question.Jasotastic1,
If you have 6 SATA connections then as long as you have room in your computer's case and a power supply sufficient to power each device, then 6 SATA devices should be no problem.
Most of the time, your BIOS will detect any new drives
that you install but sometimes you'll need to manually go into the BIOS to make sure everything is showing up properly. If the BIOS shows that each drive is available but you still cannot see them in Windows, check Disk Management and make sure that
they are formatted properly as well as assigned a drive letter.
Hope this helps!

My ipod nano has been working fine for at least three years. All of a sudden I get two messages. First, "there is a problem with this drive, scan and fix it".
And, an Ipod has been detected but can't be identified properly. It's a 6th generation nano and I have Windows 8. Any thoughts?Hello, oakbay.

I've had this for sometime and this laptop for about 1 year. Never saw this before, but haven't tryed to line up with ITunes for a while. I get a notice from windows that there is a problem with the drive and it asks it i want to fix it. Nothing happens if i try, so I have not persued that avenue. ITunes says a IPod is detected but the identification cannot be verified. Whats up with that?
