Problem backing up library to DVD - disk not recognised

Hi all,
I have just tried to back up my iTunes library (approx. 7000 songs) to Sony DVD-R (for General Version 2.1 / 16X-Speed DVD-R Revision 6.0, 7 DVDs in total).
There didn't seem to be any problem with the burning process - I am using an HP Pavilion laptop (bought in 2005) with DVD R/RW.
When the backup was complete, I tried inserting the first DVD to check it had worked - however, nothing was recognised by iTunes (latest version - 7.3.2) and when I looked at the disc in Windows Explorer it appeared to be empty.
However, there was no indication when I was burning the files that there was a problem - it seemed to work perfectly.
Should I try a different brand of DVD? I tried to burn some pictures to the same kind of disk, through Windows XP, and it did not work, so it may well be that the brand of DVD is not compatible with my laptop.
I am also considering backing up using an external hard drive - is this a reliable method? Is it just a case of copying my iTunes folder over to the external drive?
Also, would it be a good idea to copy to an external drive in stages, to avoid corrupting files, or could I do it in one single step?
There is no problem with my laptop (yet!), but I am keen to back this library up as I know how quickly things can change with computers!
Many thanks for any help.

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

For some reason OS X disks (whatever edition or flavors) that are supplied with Apple products only seem to contain a limited knowledge of available hard drives on the market at the time of thier publishing. This (rather opportunistically) creates a "Best Before" stale-OS X-software-copy situation where upgrading to or replacing a defective internal SATA hard drive with a newer, better or larger one is a largely hit and miss affair.
If you buy the latest and greatest disk drive available for any older Mac you are likely to run into unresolvable problems making a clean re-install of your own, old edition or flavor of OS X onto any newer or larger hard drive since the OEM (gray) "OS X Install Disks" that Apple supply with retail products seem to contain only time-sensitive lists/mapings of then-known target drives that the Drive Management Tool in the then-published old "Installer Software" will support.
Presumably new (colorful "X") retail versions of OS X (10.whatever.whatever) also contain time-limited Installers with limited knowledge of and adaptability to/compatability with a limited number of old hard drives then kicking-around on the market.
This is especially a problem nowadays since the countless "puny old" hard drives that have been on the market are largely obsolete in a few months time, as manufacturers continue to produce larger and cheaper units, discontinuing older puny products... So if your drive fails you need an exact old (or similar familial) replacement drive for your "backup copy of OS X" to do a fresh, clean OS X re-install. Otherwise you need to purchase a new retail version of OS X, since yours is now effectively obsolete. Purchasing an old, puny drive to re-install your version.flavor of OS X to avoid buying a new version of OS X is a rather false economy.
If you still have a working old hard drive with your old polluted 10.version.flavor of OS X still working on it you apparently must clone it with Time Machine or the newest version of Disk Utility (disk image copying) to most newer, larger drives, and a clean reinstall to such new hard drives is not possible.

Restore back up of my iPhone-password not recognised. After restore, itunes can not restore because it says the password is incorrect. But I can sign into my apple account with the password.  My iPhone is now set to factory settings as a new phone, what can i do to access the back up from my phone before I reset it.

That does happen.  It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system.  If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.

  • How Do I Solve this Problem when Copying Library from Backup Disks?

I recently had a pc problem that resulted in the repair company having to back up my hard drive (which included my I Tunes Library) onto DVDs.
When trying to upload the ITunes library from the DVD to my new computer (after downloading I Tunes software), about half of my library uploaded fine.
The other half is indicated in my new I Tunes library, but when I click on it it says that such songs "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
When I attempt to locate it, I cannot find it on the disk. But it must be there, I am guessing, because it loaded, albeit in the inaccessible form, into the new I Tunes library?
When I open the disk in my D drive, I cannot find the songs that will not open; it appears that the people who backed it up, only made it through the "Ds". But again, that is inconsistent with the fact that the inaccessible songs' titles were uploaded to the new I Tunes library.
I am totally stumped. Is there any way to fix this? I am faced with losing half my library.

CAn anyone tell me how to get out of this iphone recovery? thanks!!

  • Problems restoring IPhoto Library after hard disk crash

I had a terminal hard disk crash a couple of months ago. The drive was replaced and new (well older) OS was installed. I have since updated to the current versions of the OS and Iphoto to iPhoto'09. My Documents and Pictures folders had been backed-up separately using Apple's Backup 3. My Documents folder was restored flawlessly, but I have been unable to restore my Pictures folder.
I spent some time with MobleMe support and we were unable to resolve the problem. My iPhoto library was backed-up on 2 occasions: the first was a FullBackup and the second an IncrementalBackup. When I run restore I get the following message:
"Begin restore at 2008-12-02 20:06:45 -0330 An internal application error has occurred. The disk archive could not be attached. End restore at 2008-12-02 20:06:49 -0330"
The MobleMe assistant thought it may have something to do with my user name changing when the new OS was installed. We played with this for a while but got no joy.
MobleMe next suggested that I do a manual restore:
"At this point, it sounds like you will need to try to manually restore it. These errors, such as "An internal application error has occurred. The disk archive could not be attached," can occur if one of the increments in a backup has become damaged and cannot be opened. Here are instructions for manually restoring files:"
Using these instructions they provided I have been able to access most of my photos, but I have not rebuilt my iPhoto Library yet. I have read most of the related posts on this form and there are some helpful tips. The problem I have is that I'm not certain how to bring the pictures back into iPhoto while maintaining some of the organization. My photos are spread across 7 IncrementalBackup files (packages?). Within each of these packages there is an Originals folder. Within the original folders there are several subfolders, and some of these subfolders occur across 2 or more of the Incrementalbackup packages. For example Originals:2005 subfolder occurs in 6 of the 7 backup files.
    Finally my questions:
    1) I'm still hopeful that I might be able to restore from the backup.
    2) If not, I need to know how to recompile the the Originals subfolder system so I can maintain some the the organization, and then how I reipmort back into iPhoto'09
    Thanks
    Scott

That Library is gone. What you need to do now is start over with a new Library.
There is no way to restore your Albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc. This is a completely new beginning.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' .
From each of the Originals folders in each of the Back Up packages drag the folders of images to the iPhoto Window. Iphoto will import them and make Event folders from them. It will ask you do you want to import duplicates. Say no.
Only import from the Originals folders. Otherwise you will get massive duplication.

  • Backing up data to DVD disks?

    Hi,
I'd like to create an external backup of the most important data on my computer (in addition to the Time Machine backup that I keep on an external hard drive), and I'm not sure what would be the best way to go about this. Is there a way to easily burn large folders (including, but not limited to, my music archive) to DVD disks? I can locate individual folders in the Finder and go to "Burn to Disk.." in the File menu, but there are a few problems with this method, as far as I can see:
    1) space on the DVD is used inefficiently if the files are much less than the 4.7 GB capacity of the DVD disk, unless I manually find other files to fill the available space. However, this manual method is tedious and leads to a disorganized backup if I need to recover data later.
    2) folders larger than 4.7 GB can't be burned to disk unless I manually partition them, another possible but annoying workaround.
    3) when I've tried burning disks using this method in the past, I've met two technical failures. Sometimes, I get an error stating that there is not enough space on the (blank) DVD disk to burn the folder, even when I've reduced the size of the contents to 4.3 or so GB. Other times, the disk will begin to burn but then fail immediately after startup with an unspecified error.
Any advice on a better method for external backup would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Retrospect can do everything you want. It will create incremental backups on multisession DVDs. Files larger than 4.7GB will automatically span more than one DVD. It will continuously append new data to the same DVD disc until it is full, and then prompt you to insert a new DVD. Dozens of sessions written to the same disc are possible. It is quite cool.
Downside: It's expensive (about $100 IIRC) and you will rip out most of your trying to figure out how to configure it to do what you want.
Personally, I'd forget DVDs as a backup media. External hard drives are now cheap enough and easier to deal with that it's just not worth it to bother with DVDs anymore.

  • Original DVD drive not recognised

My macmini (1.83Ghz) suddenly stopped recognising its own DVD drive. No mods done to the mac mini but suddenly it does not recognise the drive. there is a movie DVD in it, which spins from time to time (for example when rebooting the mac mini or waking from sleep) but system profiler does not see a DVD drive (when i click on disc burning it shows 'No disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on.' this is annoying since i cannot remove the dvd that is there nor play it.
did anyone ever come across this? what can be done to fix it? how to eject the disc manually to see if it's the disc which is the issue?

i did that. the mini took a long time to start but still not dvd drive on the system profiler. i don't know if related but on starting up, it also behaves funnily. after the grey apple screen with a spinning wheel below, i get a blue screen and it seems that nothing happens for ever. the only way to get back into the mini is to set it to sleep (pushing the power button does that) then waking it up. i then get a started up mini but it does not respond to mouse action (although the arrow moves, the click don't seem to have an effect and the keyboard is unresponsive (both are bluetooth). after a while though (around 2 min) they both operate correctly which is how i reply to you. this has been the case ever since the dvd drive disapeared so the two problems appear linked. the mini is running snow leoppard.
    please help me - thanks.

    Can anybody help please?
My CD ROM / DVD Drive has failed. I have tried troubleshooting etc but to no avail. The computer does not recognise I have a cd rom / dvd drive as it says it is not recognised by the registry?

I tried system recovery but it will not let me recover to a previous date.
I cannot use my recovery disc because the computer does not recognise the drive. A catch 22 situation.
Can anyone offer any advice other than throw it out of the window?

    HI Paul,
I think your first priority will be to remove the virus from your notebook. The following link contains details of the virus :-
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.desktophijack.html
Is you CD-ROM shown in the BIOS ? If so then set it to be the first selectable boot device and you should then be able to load your recovery disk and reboot from it.

  • Erratic behaviour by internal DVD-writer (not recognising discs)

    Hi,
Earlier today I went to burn a 2 small Word files to a blank CD-RW, and ever since my iMac's internal DVD/CD-writer has been playing up.
When it went to burn the disc, it got stuck in the preparing phase (with the moving diagonal slashes progress bar), after a long while of this I tried to cancel the burn. Unfortunately the system wouldn't respond to the cancel button being clicked so I had to Force Quit the Finder.
    Following this I was then unable to get the system to eject the disc so that I could try again. Eventually resetting the computer seemed to solve this. But ever since then the computer has been behaving erratically, including;
    - not recognising (and so ejecting) previously recognised burnt CD-RWs,
    - not recognising the original blank CD-RW,
    - not recognising other blank CD-RWs,
    - rejecting multiple blank CD-RWs in a row as faulty discs,
    - getting stuck in the burning process preparations.. again! (when it did for once actually recognise a blank disc),
    - and not recognising multiple movie DVDs.
I did in the end get it recognise some movie DVDs again in the end, but aside from that it's still misbehaving.
I've reset the machine multiple time, both due to problem, and simply to try to see if that'll fix it. I've also zapped the PRAM, checked the System Profiler to ensure the drive is fully recognised by the machine/OS, I've also tried leaving the machine to cool for 10 minutes, and checked the CD and DVD preferences panel. I don't have a Drive cleaner disc yet, but then the shops are closed now so I wouldn't be able to get one till tomorrow.
Until today it's worked hitch free (aside from rejecting a few particular 'Movie DVDs' (of the correct region) for no apparent reason). I've previously been able to burn all sorts of files on to DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs, without a problem. And it's hapily read all sort of different discs with different media on them.
    Thanks
    Jessika

I would just get it repaired.

  • DVD-R not recognised

Finally I get to test out iDVD on my eMac and burn some home vids and the blessed thing just keeps spitting out the DVD-Rs. No rhyme nor reason - any ideas?
The DVDs I'm using are fine when I am not using iDVD so I don't understand.
It's all 'Apple Greek' to me
    AT

The MacOSX Forums are saying this:
    1. Delete your iDVD plist (preference) file com.apple.iDVD.plist (the actual folder location has changed over time - but look for the file by name)
    2. Make sure you have lots of free space (20GB recommended) on the startup drive.
    3. Try using "Save as Disk Image", this burns to hard drive rather than the DVD disk. If that works, then burn the image with Disk Utility onto the DVD. This makes duplicate burning even faster and does not waste a DVD
To Burn a disk image to a DVD using Disk Utility (OS 10.3.x):
3a. Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
3b. Drag the disk image you created from iDVD to use to the Disk Utility window if the disk image doesn't appear in the list.
3c. Select the disk image (in Disk Utility) and click Burn.
3d. Insert a CD or DVD disc into the optical drive of your computer and follow the prompts.
    4. Several people recommended changing type of DVD disk. Different brands and even different speeds (use 4x disks if the burner is a 4x burner)

  • DVD Device not recognised as a DVD Device

    Hi,
I am having a very annoying problem.
Since installing arch (quite a while ago) I have not been able to use my DVD device for DVDs.  It is recognised as a CD-ROM only, whereas it is really a DVD reader / CD burner (not dvd burner).  I have been able to use this for reading dvds on windows, then when i used to be on ubuntu.  Arch doesn't see it properly.
When Arch loads, i notice Universal CD Device Driver or something, version 3.20, is loaded for hdc (my device).  I think it is not recognised properly.
I have tried manually mounting different devices, checked dmesg for any changes between reading a dvd and reading a cd (no new lines in dmesg when a dvd has been inserted).  It is really, really strange and I do not know what to do.
Can someone please help me?  I can download the drivers for my device (windows tho) if that helps.
Any response is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

yes I have that, no difference.  I think it is a problem with the firmware that is flashed onto the device itself, or something like that.  is there a way to flash firmwares in linux?  all the toshiba firmware installation things, or the rpc1.org stuff are all for windows.  how can i do it?
or, if there is a way, i'd like to reset to the original firmware, is there any possibility of that?

This sounds like a dirty laser lengs did you try to clean that off and see if can read again? Otherwise if you clean it and still does the problem would mean the drive is failing to read the Optical media.
