Problem booting Drive and DVD

I think I really screwed up my computer and hopefully someone can help.
Unfortunately, I installed Tiger on a 10gb drive. Once I tried installing the updates, I ran out of disk space. I think I tried this twice and then I got the "Disk is full" message. The last thing I remember is having about 2-300mb left on the drive. Once I restarted, the Apple logo comes up then the Mac OS X loading screen. It goes all the way to the end and just hangs there. I left it alone for at least 30 minutes and nothing happened. Then I tried to boot from the DVD-Rom drive, but it won't work now. I don't know if it is broken or what. It worked fine before.
Anyways, I tried booting in safeboot, etc.. Didn't work. Tried firewire to another computer. Didn't work. The only thing I was able to get to work (i think) was single-user mode, which checked the drive and said it was o.k.
What can I do to either wipe the drive and reinstall or boot the drive? I cannot use my DVD drive now for some reason nor access the drive. Everything worked fine until I took up too much space trying to install the software update.
Thanks for any help and/or suggestions.
G4 gray tower 450mhz with additional 450mhz installed   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   3 internal drives: 2-10gb, 1-40gb

Buy some drives. Buy a nice FW400 from OWC. Pick up a FW800 PCI card while at it ($49).
Use Apple Disk Utility Restore; or SuperDuper; or Carbon Copy Cloner to copy volumes to another disk drive.
Wow! a 10GB drive still working - and in use. They are very slow esp when compared to today. Get a 120GB internal drive, and maybe 160GB for FW (no limit, unlike internal ATA).
YOu could also pick up a Pioneer DVD 111D ($42).
Never let a drive get beyond 85% used, always leave 4GB free as a minimum!
YOu need to repair the drive. but you also need to use a new drive and/or your other drives. And put a system on a NEW drive, don't do anything with what you have. Maybe use Disk Warrior. You could try to use Single User Mode to run FSCK from the command line - hold down the CMD + s on startup and follow the directions on the screen to run FSCK.
/sbin/fsck -fy
to repair the boot drive.
If the directory was corrupt (you said it was not) that CAN prevent booting from even a CD/DVD.
And you don't have OS X on FW drive you have?

  • Hard drive and dvd are not recognized in the setup menu, what could be wrong?

The hard drive and dvd drive are not recognized on the setup menu for my Pavilion a4316f desktop computer.  Could it be a failure of the controller?  Can a PCI controller be used to replace the mother board controller?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The Recovery process would erase you hard drive, and attempt to install a fresh OS. Decidely a bad choice if you wanted to save your data files. The Recovery sets are "tattoo" with the BIOS hardwafre configuration. It will not, IMHO, recognize the PCI Sata card.
You mentioned the Recovery program on the hard drive actually requested the installer of the controller (PCI card). Try running from that.

  • No bootable device --- insert boot drive and press any key?

A while back I tried installing windows 7 on the iMac which is now running on Mountain Lion. Installing windows wouldn't work. I tried every possible option and tried so many times to get it to work but it wouldn't. Now I have another issue. I went to disk utility and have erased the partition that was created. Except everytime that I boot up my iMac, it tells me
No bootable device --- insert boot drive and press any key?
I have no idea how to get rid of that. I have to always hold down option so that I can choose my apple partition. I was reading online and people say that there is a problem with the Hard Drive, that Master Boot Record is currupt. How do I fix that? Would I need a new harddrive? I dont care if I have to loose all my files, except I dont want to beleive that the only way to fix it is to reinstall Mountain Lion, because in the process of trying to install Windows 7 I reinstalled Mountain Lion like 3 times... So doubt that reinstalling Mountain Lion would fix this issue. Is something wrong with my Hard Drive and is there a away to fix it?

  • Creating a Boot drive and a data drives

I have just installed a new 750 GB hard drive into a PowerMac G5, it had a 160 GB drive already, and I left that in there. I would like to use the older smaller drive as the boot drive, and the newer bigger one as the user data drive.
How do I go about doing it to minimize problems? I can clone the older drive onto the newer one, using disk utility. Once I do that, then what? Please give me some detailed steps.
Where do I divide things up, put system and applications on the boot drive, and users on the data drive? What about Library? What about things like etc, tmp, and var? Will I have problems cloning users? Please help

You do not need to clone to the new drive, unless you want to be able to startup from it.
Just use Disk Utility. Select the new drive in the Disk Utility sidebar. If you just want one partition on the drive, you can use the Erase tab to format it. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format type. If you want to partition it and format it, use the Partition tab. One possibility is to create two partition, with one partition being about the size of the 160GB startup drive. You can then periodically clone your regular startup drive to that smaller partition to have a bootable backup (very useful for trouble-shooting). The second partition can be the rest of the space. How you partition the drive is up to you...
You should keep your system and library files on the startup drive. You should generally keep your application files on your startup drive, in the Application folder. You may also want to keep all of default first level folders in your Home (user) folder on the startup drive. These are the folders like Documents, Music, Movies, etc. that are created during the OS installation.
Inside these user folders, I have moved my large folders (such as +iTunes Music+ at <home>/Music/iTunes/) to my second drive. Then I create an alias named exactly like the moved folder, and put it back in the original location. When iTunes is started, it should act like the folder was still on startup drive in the default location. Alternately, you can move the folder and tell iTunes where the new location is in its preferences, but I like using the default settings when possible.
You should be able to take similar actions to put your iPhoto library folder and others on your second drive. If you have sub-folders in your documents folder, you can also alias them to folders on your second drive. Essentially, most of your user-created data can be on the second drive, but it will look like a default setup in Finder and to the system.
There are more technical things you can do, such as move your entire user folder to the second drive. You can look at those possibilities as well...

  • How to use ssd as boot drive and hdd as storage on a macbook pro 13

Does anyone know how to use SSD as boot drive and have HDD in optical bay as storage on a Macbook pro 13. I mean in that both drives work as one . by formatting using mac software . I would like to run all programs and OS but would love to have my downloads and useless data on run on my 1tb 5400rpm hdd without me have to manual send it there..

Each drive mounts as a separate volume. There is no convenient way to make them look like one contiguous volume.*
Franky, with an hdd and a ssd I would recommend you put your home dir on the hdd and leave the ssd for the OS and your key applications.  It's relatively easy to do and I think better than moving only portions of your stuff.

I wondered if anybody could send me in the right direction with this...
I have got the A55M-E33 motherboard and try to connect my old hard-drive and DVD drive (both IDE) to the motherboard using IDE to SATA converters. The BIOS detects both drives, however I don't think I got the right BIOS settings to accommodate the way the drives should be addressed. Has somebody used this kind of setup and would kindly share their experience please?

  • My external drive and DVD/CD devices are missing from my sidebar

The other day, my external Time Machine drive and DVD disappeared from my Sidebar. Time Machine still sees the drive and writes to it routinely. DVDs and CDs can be written to but do not show when done. They can be ejected with the keyboard button but since there is no Icon, they cant't be checked on this coomputer.
I've double checked the Finder Preferences, etc. but nothing has brought them back.

Go to the Finder Menu... Finder... Preferences... Sidebar... turn them on from there.

      Windows XP

Happens, its a commonly documented error with Windows and alot of burning software installed on one machine.
Your going to have to work thru this article to resolve it. Now it is going to be in the registry to fix it. Which is pretty indepth. The document works tho. Used to work for a company that wrote burning software and we did this on a hourly basis. If your not comfortable, your going to need to find someone who is experenced in the registry.

  • Problem booting from external DVD drive on Lenovo S10e

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new Lenovo S10e ideapad, a few weeks prior to that I purchased an external DVD rewriter drive manufactured by LG, the drive works perfectly on every computer I try with the exception of the Lenovo ideapad S10e.
The thing is that the drive is being recognized and installed by the Windows XP Home Edition the S10e came with but when I try to boot a bootable CD using then drive on the S10e ideapad I almost alwasy fail to do so.
I set the S10e BIOS to have the USB CDROM as first boot device, in addition I used the F12 key to use the boot menu to choose the boot device, in 9 out 0f 10 atempts my external drive will not show in the boot menu and when choosing the enter setup option I see that the BIOS do not list it as the USB CDROM, instead it says "USB CDROM:" rather than have the drive name after it.
In the 1 time out of 10 it does work the BIOS seem to be identifying the drive and it shows in the boot menu, however I cannot work with it for a more than 1 minute without it stopped being recognized again.
The problem seems very strange to me as the drive works under the windows operating system and do not have any problem whatsoever on other computers, I have tested the external drive on my PC, another Mini Laptop from LG and a GIGABYTE Laptop (Normal one), all of which had no problems recognizing the external drive and booting from it.
I will really appreciate if I can get some help with the problem.
    Thanks.

I've had a similar issue with X61 and the external DVD drive from Lenovo.
In my case, it was the power issue. On the back of the drive, there is a small table says that the drive needs a 3.0A 5V power input. One USB 2.0 port can only provide 0.5A. I don't know if the drive has any special, low power mode, but I suspect that even if it has, 0.5A is still not enough to fully power it. I've checked the current with the multimeter, and at peak times, the drive draws 550mA. Even then, it makes a stuttering sound for a few seconds, before finally spinning the DVD disk. I've also noticed that the DVD works most of the times when it's connected to the left USB port. That may be because of how the laptop's internal power circuicity is laid out (+separate USB host controller for each 'side' of the laptop). Another thing that seems to help is to disable all 5V driven devices that the laptop uses: the wifi card, bluetooth, any additional devices connected to the USB bus / to the ethernet port / SD card port (I'm not actually sure which of the devices are 5V and which are 3.3V, but the best option is to disable all of them), maybe even remove the battery (if it's charging). Finally, the DVD drive works better if the laptop was turned on and runnig for some time, rather than it being turned on "a minute before". Also, in the BIOS, there is a setting that changes the speed of the DVD drive, but switching it to "low" didn't seem to affect the external drive (at least not before Windows boots up).

  • Problems booting from OSX DVD and External FW HDD

I've been trying recently to take a Dual-Bay Firewire Harddrive unit running a Oxford Semiconductor OXFW911 Chipset. I have two 250GB Hard drives and on one of these I have it Partitioned into 3 partitions. One is my Scratch Partition, one is the Restore of a DVD Install Disc and the last is a "Pre-Installed" version of OSX. I want to be able to boot from the Install DVD partition and the "Pre-Installed" Partition. I have successfully Imaged the Install DVD Partition and was able to boot from that partition once to install OSX on a computer without a DVD drive.
Problem now is that I can't boot from the partition, or I should say, I select it from the Sys Prefs and it will pass the grey screen to a the blue background and just get hung up. It never displays the dialog to select a language to begin the install.
I also can not boot from the Install DVD. It will show up in the Startup Disk in Sys Prefs but always ends up hanging.
I've tried booting using "Option" and it displays my Internal HD and then two icons for the Install DVD Partition on the External FW Drive. Neither one allows for me boot up.
Any ideas for what I may be missing?
    Thanks,
    Russ

It appears that if the Partition with OSX was installed from anything besides the Restore Disc, the Powerbook won't boot to it.
I think this is ridiculous, and if I've went wrong somewhere, someone please correct me.
    Thanks.

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.

Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.

  • How can i restore from Recovery Disk if my notebook's hard drive and dvd drives are dead.

Hi. Good day. My hard drive just crashed and im trying to restore from my restore disks. Unfortunately, my dvd is dead too. I copied the recovery disks to a new hard drive and tried booting from a flash drive but the noteebook is still giving me the SMART hd error message. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
If you have, or can borrow an external CD/DVD drive it would be worth trying this although I'm not certain your notebook will support booting from a drive connected via USB.
Another option may be to see if you can find a second hand optical drive on somewhere like Ebay - the drives compatible with your notebook can be found on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.  It may even be worth removing a re-seating your existing drive just in case this helps as described in this section.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager?  If it does, right click it and select Properties.  Select the driver tab and see if there is an error code in the status box.

  • I have one 120GB SSD and one 1TB SSHD, how do do I make one of them my boot drive and the other my data drive?

I'm currently upgrading my mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13", I've purchased some new RAM and also a 120GB SSD and a 1TB SSHD (Hybrid SSD and HD) with the intention of using an OWC data doubler to get rid of my dvd drive and place the SSD drive there instead. So after I've placed everything into the Mac, how do I make the SSD my boot drive with the OS on it and everything, and the SSHD where all my data (music, photos etc) are stored?

Youll need to CLONE your internal HD to your target (temporarily) external drive.
    1. grab carbon copy cloner or (my fave) superDuper CLONE app.
    2. attach target clone drive via USB in an enclosure or HD dock. Firstly format the target (external new) HD in disk utility in “Mac OS extended journaled”
    3. clone internal HD to target HD (external)   [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
    5. open bottom (see videos on ifixit or youtube on same) and remove old, install new.

    Done
(FIRST TIME after installing,  boot will be SLOW,...normal and ignore that).
    Clone APPS
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

  • No power to hard drive and DVD player

I got a G4 1.67ghz PowerBook of eBay. It powers on with out any problems and goes to the flashing question mark. So I put in a new known good hard drive and tried putting in the 10.5 install disk but the DVD player wouldn't take it. So I hooked an external DVD player and restarted. When I got to Disk Utility it only shows the external player. No hard drive and no internal DVD player. I can't hear the hard drive spinning in the PowerBook.
What would cause the PowerBook to work perfectly otherwise but no power getting to the hard drive and internal DVD player?

I found out what the problem was! I put the hard drive into an external enclosure to see if Disk Utility would see it. when I did that the DVD drive showed up in Disk Utility. So I looked at the hard drive and found it had a jumper on it setting it for Cable Select. I pulled off the jumper and the hard drive showed up in Disk Utility! Why having the jumper on it would make both the hard drive and the DVD drive not show up in Disk Utility I have no idea.
